London 2012: Olympics used as fitness motivation for British women

LONDON Soon after a trio of chiseled men in army boots and fatigues hops out of two vans in Hyde Park, women of various ages and sizes gather around. Theyve turned out, along with a smattering of men, for a 9 a.m. workout with British Military Fitness, a company thats achieving on a micro-scale what the British government has pledged to do since being chosen in 2005 to host the 2012 Olympics.

The London Games are the first to have promised to inspire mass participation in sports as part of the legacy it leaves behind. That vow helped tip the scales when the International Olympic Committee awarded the Games to London over such contenders as Paris and Madrid.

Coverage of U.S. qualifying, plus Olympics-related features, photos, graphics and video.

As we watch 16-year-olds compete in the gymnastics events, even the 20-somethings among us look back regretfully and wonder if our glory days have passed. Here, we take a look at which sports skew young and which allow for more longevity.

But government officials have found that in a culture consumed by mens soccer, cricket and rugby, encouraging British women to get moving is especially difficult.

Just one in eight British women exercise regularly, compared to one in five men, according to Sport England, a government agency that invests money from Britains national lottery in grassroots initiatives aimed at adults. Among disadvantaged women, its one in 10.

Researchers have documented a myriad reasons why, both practical and cultural, including the perception among many British women that being active simply isnt attractive.

The United States has confronted similar issues but had greater success tackling them with the legislative stick known as Title IX, which since 1972 has mandated equal opportunity for girls and boys, young women and men, in schools receiving federal funds.

With no analogous law in Great Britain, funding and support for womens sports has suffered by comparison, says Sue Tibballs, chief executive of the Womens Sport and Fitness Foundation, the nations leading advocacy group for womens sports.

Fitness building for Suns

Guy McKenna believes Gold Coast's fitness levels are now finally up to scratch ahead of this weekend's clash with local rivals Brisbane.

The Suns breakthrough win over Richmond - sealed by Karmichael Hunt's after-the-siren kick for goal - came on the back of an impressive performance at home to reigning premiers Geelong the week before.

Although the expansion club fell by 14 points to the Cats, there were signs they were starting to put their woeful early season form behind them as they stayed in the game for longer periods.

Gold Coast parted ways with high performance manager Dean Robinson at the end of last season after he was poached by Essendon and have not looked the same side since.

The Suns have been notoriously unable to string two good games together, but are now on the brink of three if they can put in a strong showing against the Lions on Saturday.

Despite a poor third term against the Tigers in Cairns, McKenna said their first win in 12 months signaled they are now fit enough to be competitive.

"All of a sudden, we're fit," he said.

"Six or eight rounds ago, we couldn't tackle, we weren't strong at the footy and we were unfit.

"It's (not) surprising now the season goes on and all of a sudden we are."

McKenna said there was also change going on above the shoulders.

Fitness program reaches families

Angie Chandler, principal of Cedar Ridge Elementary School, does a workout during a session of the Step Into Fitness program on Thursday in the school gymnasium. Chandler said she lost 31 pounds since starting her regimen. I just followed the old advice of eat less, exercise more, she said.

By Catherine Martin

Sunday, July 15, 2012

Staff and parents at Cedar Ridge Elementary have found a new way to connect and get to know each other after school a fitness program held in the evenings in the school's gym.

The program, Step into Fitness, started at the school in January and was the brainchild of Principal Angie Chandler and her personal trainer, Logan McNeely, an MU student.

Chandler started training with McNeely after she had been going to a gym for a year and hadn't lost any weight. Once she started the sessions, which also offer information about healthy eating, Chandler saw the weight loss begin.

She's lost 31 pounds to date and decided to share that success.

"Teachers work really hard and don't have money to be able to afford someone to talk about fitness and nutrition," Chandler said.

Many parents faced that same problem, she said. As a solution, Chandler and McNeely decided to bring the program to parents and teachers at no cost.

Fitness camps support more park hours for Camarillo dogs

Mike DePonio stands sentinel most evenings at Mission Oaks Park inCamarillo.

He's there with Lucy, his small and shaggy black dog who spends the evening visiting with her friends. He smiles with satisfaction as more than 30 owners and their mutts show up for a romp on the grass and an evening ofconversation.

"What's happened is that we've created community. It's the people who make it go. We clean up after and look after our dogs," DePonio said. "We've been able to maintain a place for the dogs to be dogs and for people to cometogether."

DePonio is a founding member of Friends of Camarillo Dog Parks, a group that is responsible for working with the Pleasant Valley Recreation & Park District to create off-leash areas for Camarillo dogowners.

The group has raised about $22,000 in pursuit of its goal of $30,000 and is planning its latest fundraising effort, "Unleash Your Fitness," on Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays in Camarillo andVentura.

"Everything we do is cause-inspired," said Mark Ryan, owner of Element Fitness, who will host the fitness fundraising events. Half of the money raised will go the dog park group to help build a fenced-in area at Springville Park in the Spanish Hills neighborhood. "The basis of what Element Fitness does is to provide people with opportunities to get fit in a natural environment while giving back to the community they'rein."

Ryan has had fitness programs for a number of groups, including FOOD Share and the American HeartAssociation.

"This fitness program is actually for people and not for the dogs," said Ryan, himself an owner of fourdogs.

DePonio has earned the affectionate title of "pope of Mission Oaks," while Lucy has come to be known as "the queen," said Camarillo's Pleasant Valley Recreation & Park District deserves the credit for the creation of off-leashareas.

"Camarillo is a fairly small community, but we're basically looking at three dog parks, or areas where dogs can be off-leash, DePonio said. "That's in large part due to the PVRPD listening to what we have to say and working withus."
