Picard Center Analyzes Fitness and Academic Data on La. Students

Students with cardiovascular fitness tend to score higher on standardized academic tests, according to a recent health report released by the Picard Center for Child Development and Lifelong Learning at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The report notes that students with cardiovascular fitness may score up to 5% higher on standardized tests than children who are classified as unfit (average of 16 points higher in English Language Arts and average of 19 points higher in Math).

More than 100,000 schoolchildren from approximately 300 schools and 18 districts across Louisiana participated in health-related fitness assessments during the 2010-11 school year. (Of this sample, more than 78,000 records were used in the statewide fitness data analysis, and more than 19,000 student records were used in the fitness-academic data analysis.)

Students participated in five fitness subtests, each measuring a different quality of fitness, such as aerobic capacity, muscle strength, endurance, and flexibility. Additionally, Body Mass Index (BMI) data were gathered from students, which is a measurement of a student's weight in relation to their height and serves as an indicator of an individual's risk for certain chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and Type 2 diabetes.

In its analysis of cardiovascular fitness and academic performance, Picard researchers included students who completed a scored aerobic capacity assessment (ages 10 and above) and had LEAP or iLEAP scores (grades 3-9). This sample included more than 19,000 students.

Of this sample:

Students who passed the cardiovascular fitness assessment scored an average of 16 points higher on the 2011 English-Language (ELA) portion of the state standardized tests. (326 for students who passed cardio test vs. 310 for students who did not).

Students who passed the cardiovascular fitness assessment scored an average of 19 points higher on the 2011 Math portion of the state standardized tests. (334 for students who passed cardio test vs. 315 score for students who did not).

These findings are comparable to similar studies in other states, such as the Texas Youth Fitness Study and the California Physical Fitness Test.

"Based on these findings, the results suggest there are statistically significant differences in children who are aerobically fit and those who are not. This translates into real academic gains for students as well as potentially positive health outcomes," notes Dr. Holly Howat, co-principal investigator for Coordinated School Health.

"Fitness assessment is one part of many components of strategies to prevent childhood obesity in that it connects the schools' efforts with parental/community involvement. Teachers can assess their curriculum while parents are invited to learn more about their child's fitness in an effort to collectively prevent childhood obesity," said Dr. Joan Landry, physical health research project director.

Fitness Together – The “Neiman Marcus” of fitness: an elite, private training studio where members receive the VIP …

(From left to right) Scott Baumann, co-owner/trainer, Denise Rodriguez, Linda Dann, TJ Sabalka, trainer, and Elisa Seda, trainer.

At Fitness Together, you wont see photographs of the facilitys trainers or celebrities on the walls.

Too old? Too many injuries? I am 72 with 2 total knee replacements, 2 carpal tunnel surgeries, 1 hernia repair, plus overweight. Fitness Together knows my weak spots and adapt. They keep me safe and active. I have much more energy than I had before starting with FT, said client Linda Dann.

Its not about me or my trainers; its about our clients and the results we have helped them accomplish, said co-owner and manager Scott Baumann, who opened Fitness Together seven years ago with partner and Miami native, Eddie Rodriguez. Our goal is not to train celebrities, but to make each and every one of our clients feel like a celebrity. This is an elite facility where the average mom or businessman can train privately with their own personal trainer to achieve their fitness goals and have a great time doing it.

One of the most unique features about Fitness Together is that members work out under the direction of their own personal trainer in a fully equipped, private room. There are no crowds, no waiting for equipment and no need to feel embarrassed about just starting out.

Not everyone feels comfortable working out in a crowded, big box gym where theres a lot of chit chat, younger people and a social scene, said Rodriguez. Our clients want results, and they want an experienced and friendly trainer to help them.

At Fitness Together, Rodriguez and Baumann take pride in offering members the Neiman Marcus experience.

Its just like fashion, you can shop at TJ Maxx or you can shop at Neiman Marcus. We are the Neiman Marcus.

We hand our clients their water, get their towels and provide fresh fruit, said Baumann. I know each and every client by their first name. We even celebrate birthdays, as we cultivate a very family environment. Its important that we take time to show our members how valuable they are to us, and thats why they tend to stick around.

Although Baumann and Rodriguez have managed to maintain an intimate, small business atmosphere, their locations in South Miami and Coconut Grove are only two of the companys more than 400 facilities worldwide, making Fitness Together the largest private training organization in the world.

Garmin profit beats on fitness products sales

(Reuters) - Garmin Ltd's (GRMN) quarterly profit beat estimates as demand jumped for its outdoor and fitness GPS products and it posted a surprise increase in sales of its personal navigation devices.

Shares of the company rose 7 percent to a near-four-year high of $50.67 early on Wednesday morning on the Nasdaq. They were up 2 percent at $48.60 later in the morning.

Garmin has outperformed the broader Dow Jones US Technology Hardware & Equipment Index (.DJUSTQ) in the past year Garmin's stock rose 39 pct in that period while the index rose 22 pct.

Shares of the company's Dutch rival TomTom (TOM2.AS) fell 46 percent in that same period.

Revenue from Garmin's automotive/mobile business, traditionally known for its personal navigation devices (PND), rose 6 percent to $280 million as the company sold more units and grabbed market share from rivals.

While reporting fourth-quarter results in February, Garmin had said it expected PND revenue to fall 7 percent to 10 percent and unit deliveries to continue to decline in 2012.

PNDs, once a must-have gadget and Garmin's mainstay till a couple of years ago, has seen slowing demand as consumers switch to GPS-enabled smartphones that offer turn-by-turn navigation.

The drop in the popularity of PNDs forced Garmin to look for new areas of growth and focus on fitness products.

Gross margin rose 4 percentage points to 51 percent, largely aided by strong auto/mobile segment margin indicating improved PND pricing that offset a decline in margin at the marine segment.

The company also bundles its PNDs with its high-margin mapping services a strategy that is not expected to boost profit till the end of 2012 due to its deferred revenue model.

Fitness 24/7 – My Way

Fitness 24/7 - My Way

Trends affecting the fitness industry, and why gym junkies really go to the gym

New research shows that tough economic times and the 24/7 business cycle are impacting the fitness industry. Todays gym goers are opting for low frills operators, trading away high end service in favour of convenience, price and flexible contracts.

The independent Canstar Blue survey found there is now a place in the market for a different model of fitness club.

Top class equipment and facilities are important no matter where you work out, says Derek Bonnar, Canstar New Zealand National Manager, but gym goers are most satisfied with new low frills operator, Jetts.

Not everybody wants the high end, high cost, full service gym experience. The survey shows there is a distinct preference for fitness on my terms, whether thats measured by value for money, 24 hour access or flexible contracts. Our New Zealand gym survey respondents gave Jetts a five star rating for overall satisfaction, outranking other nationwide chains*, just as they did in Australia**.

Most kiwis are responding to the uncertain economy by being cautious about taking on debt, trying to save, and by trimming their expenses. At the same time, our expectations of service are expanding. People want to be able to go to the supermarket at midnight and to fill their car with petrol at 2am. These important trends are influencing the services that gyms offer and when and where people access fitness services, says Bonnar.

Bodies Beautiful, the Meat Market Myth and the Generation Gap

While todays gym goer is motivated to get fit, theyre not buying into the body beautiful ideal or the meat market myth.

Our respondents told us that going to the gym is a serious business, with 70% saying they felt guilty if they missed a workout. Theyre not there to socialise, or to meet someone. More than half work out on their own, says Bonnar.

Hackensack NJ - Fitness Technologies Inc. http://www.FitnessTechUSA.com, a leading provider of waterproof products, announced today the first line of full-day 8 hour Uwater Action Cameras and DX Extreme Dive Lights rated at 100 Meters underwater. Indestructible, scratch & impact proof, the DX Extreme Dive Lights are the most durable action gear in the industry.

To be introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), held in Las Vegas, January 10-13, 2012, by Fitness Technologies Booth #3018, the Uwater HD Action Cam line includes the patent pending UwaterHD3X all-metal extendable 100% waterproof camera rated at 30 Meters (no case needed), the UwaterHD55 camera with 60 Meter waterproof casing, and the UwaterHD77 all-weather camera. DX Dive Lights with First Internal Triple-Action Rotational Switching Design

Also at CES, Fitness Technologies will introduce their new patent pending UwaterDX Line of fully rechargeable Extreme Dive Lights with a 3/8" Polycarbonate luminous super bright lens at up to 2700 lumens for the darkest underwater excursions up to 100 Meters or for night-time outdoor use. The DX line of lights can be mounted to the Uwater action cams to illuminate underwater for scuba diving, boating, or other waterproof use. Featuring the first internal triple-action rotational switching design with no external parts, the DX line is unlike other brands that use magnetic switching which tend to rust in salt water over time. Employing an internal electronic cycle rotation switch for water-tight activation, the DX line is completely safe for life with no potential accidental activation or malfunctions.

The UwaterDX line also features Radial Heat Sink Technology, invented by aircraft engine manufacturers to remove the heat engines generate thus increasing its efficiencies. The DX line's Radial Heat Sink is so effective that it enables the powerful U.S. made CREE LED power source to operate not only in the water, but also outside water using air for cooling. In addition to about 17% output improvement, the DX Radial Heat Sink significantly increases operating life.

Fitness First In Better Shape After Debt Deal

Debt-laden Fitness First is set to confirm a deal that will ensure its survival but at significant cost to its private equity owner.

Under the agreement with lenders, it is understood that the global leisure chain's debts of more than 600m will be wiped out, leaving BC Partners with a much reduced holding.

Two funds, which had snapped up almost 80% of Fitness First's debt pile, will effectively take control of the business under the plan.

Oaktree and Marathon have reportedly agreed to inject 100m to help restore the company's fortunes and guarantee its immediate future.

However, a restructuring that could be demanded by the funds could result in some of its 140 UK gyms being closed and job losses among the 1,000 staff.

The Daily Telegraph reported that while Fitness First's chief executive Chris Stone had agreed a three month waiver agreement on its 18m quarterly rent bill, gym closures were more likely if lower terms could not be negotiated.

It also reported that a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) had not been ruled out as a potential move to eliminate heavy rent costs.

Fitness First, like many leisure companies, has been hurt by the squeeze on consumer spending of the past few years.

A third of properties in its UK portfolio are understood to be unprofitable.

It employs 13,000 staff at 430 gyms worldwide.
