Lifestyle Family Fitness members left without answers as LA Fitness takes over

One of the nation's largest fitness chains is about to gobble up one of Tampa Bay's most popular gyms: LA Fitness has reached a deal to acquire St. Petersburg-based Lifestyle Family Fitness.

The terms of the deal for the 33 Lifestyles locations in Florida were not disclosed, according to Club Industry, the trade publication that first reported the deal on Monday.

"The transaction is subject to various closing conditions," LA Fitness said in a statement to the magazine. "While the parties are hopeful that the transaction will be completed within the next several weeks, there can be no assurance as to when or whether a closing will occur."

Neither officials from LA Fitness nor Lifestyle returned repeated calls for comment from the Tampa Bay Times. Nor did the companies make any announcements on their respective websites or through social media.

That left Lifestyle's employees and patrons in Tampa Bay with plenty of questions and no answers: What will happen to their jobs, their memberships, their gyms?

"My wife is not happy," said retired U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Brian Potridge, 46, who hoped to find an open treadmill late Monday. He and his wife work out at the St. Petersburg Lifestyle at 5900 Fourth St. N.

"Her main reason for coming is the classes," Potridge said. "She's heard that LA Fitness doesn't have the same ones."

Indeed, Stuart Goldman, an industry analyst and managing editor of Club Industry, said that the two fitness chains are dissimilar: Lifestyle is known for bigger facilities that hold more fitness classes; LA Fitness is known for having smaller buildings with fewer offerings.

There's also bound to be confusion ahead for Lifestyle members. That's what happened to Bally Total Fitness members when LA Fitness acquired the chain last year. Bally members even filed suit in federal court claiming that LA Fitness would not honor their lifetime memberships.

"You have a lot of members wondering, 'Am I being transferred to the nearest LA Fitness? How are my rates going to change?' " Goldman said. "It's going to be a long process. I can see where a lot of members won't be happy."

Aurora Police revamp fitness tests for officers

AURORA A new physical fitness test used to screen Aurora Police candidates is based not on the number of timed sit-ups or push-ups a person can do, but on activities more closely related to actual police work.

In April, the Aurora Police Department suspended its fitness test after the Department of Justice requested five years of fitness entrance test results to see if the test discriminated against women.

The Aurora Civil Service Commission "made a change to substitute a job-function test that attempts to more closely mirror the types of physical activity associated with police work," city attorney Charlie Richardson said.

The new test, announced last week, will be used for the first time during the November police academy.

One part will be timed. A test monitor will tell a participant sitting in a patrol car to pursue a fictitious felony suspect on the run.

Within 60 seconds, the person must get out of the car, run a total course distance of about 130 yards and negotiate an obstacle course.

This includes crawling under a standard-size office table, climbing through a window and then running to a set of stairs.

After climbing the stairs, the participant must then identify the proper suspect from four targets, each numbered and dressed differently.

The participant also must move a dummy weighing about 150 pounds from a chair across a designated line 5 feet away.

The untimed part of the test requires climbing a 6-foot chain-link fence in a "slow and deliberate" manner.

Fitness classes that can rock your body

If the thought of another grueling boot camp class has you yawning and dragging your feet, why not try a workout that makes fitness feel like a party?

Whether you like to dance, spin or just channel your inner rock god or goddess, there's a class out there that will fit the bill, and still burn fat and build muscle.

The L.A. Times scoured Los Angeles gyms to come up with three total-body workout classes that bring the music and fun from the clubs into the studio. Think of these as alcohol-free happy hours or your time to release stress while keeping your fitness goals on track.

Prices vary, depending on whether you belong to the gym where the class is offered or buy packages of classes. Some sites offer discounts for the first class. Single classes cost around $20 to $25.

Buti Yoga

(Multiple locations. Classes can be found at http://www.butifitness.com.)

Buti Yoga, developed by yoga and fitness expert Bizzie Gold, is a sexy hybrid of Miami Booty Dance, yoga and CrossFit-type plyometric moves (explosive moves to build power).

Set to loud Afro-Brazilian funk, hip-hop and reggae music, Buti's intense 60- to 90-minute workouts will have you swiveling your hips during warrior one pose and shaking your bum during deep prayer squats.

The suggestive moves are enough to make some first-timers blush or giggle, but Gold believes that Buti's sexy stance is good at building self-esteem and body awareness.

Buti (pronounced booty, not beauty) also amps up the calorie burn. Plank jumping jacks, squats and mountain climbers keep your heart rate elevated between longer poses or vinyasa. And many classic static yoga moves, such as triangle pose, have been transformed into dynamic exercises to help participants stay in a cardio zone.

Fitness: Completing a triathlon Triathlon terms Local triathlons left in 2012

Cleo Battle is a runner. He feels somewhat comfortable on a bike. He doesn't consider himself a swimmer at all.

"I could swim to save my life, if I needed to," he said, with a broad grin.

But he has a goal to complete a triathlon, doing all three of those activities in one event, within the next 2 years.

Battle, 48, is a typical first-time triathlete. He's not proficient at all three of the sports, but he's willing to spend time training to achieve a goal.

He wants to complete a triathlon by the end of his 50th year, which is 2014.

"For me, it's a realistic goal," he said when I talked to him at his downtown offices. He is the vice president of sales and services at the Richmond Metropolitan Convention & Visitors Bureau.

He's giving himself some time to master the swimming portion of the event, planning to start with some lessons to learn correct form and then practice in the water.

Battle travels a lot with his job, so training will be sporadic, he said. That's why he's starting this year.

"When people set unrealistic goals, then they fail at it," he said. "I think you've got to have realistic goals."

He's pretty sure his first triathlon will be one categorized as a "sprint" triathlon, which is the shortest type and what appeals to most beginners. Often, a sprint triathlon is a 750-meter swim, a 12-mile bike ride and a 3.1-mile run.

Save or Splurge? How to Spend Smart on Fitness Gear

Has beach season reinvigorated your goal to get fit? Whether you're picking back up on your workout routine or trying out the latest fitness craze for the first time, keep in mind that committing to a regular workout regimen doesn't have to involve condemning your savings account with expensive fitness gear.

Like many other products on the market, some activewear is worth the extra buck, while consumers can find more value scaling back on certain brand name exercise items. Being wooed into flashy brand name clothing and accessories, especially if you're trying out a foreign workout style like yoga, for example, is understandable but expensive.

Instead, learn which fitness gear and apparel are worth your time and money, and where it's perfectly acceptable to substitute big-name brands for cheap workout clothes for women and men.

What to Know About Activewear

In addition to longevity and quality, buying activewear based on functionality is essential. This means that you should ideally turn to fabrics like polyester that absorb sweat away from the skin and, using capillary action, allows sweat to essentially evaporate on the exterior of the garmentthus, keeping you dry while you shed calories doing cardio.

While cotton apparel works well for everyday use due to its breathablity and lightweight features, it performs rather poorly as exercise clothing. The reason being cotton's absorbent nature; unlike the moisture wicking action of new workout clothing in today's market, cotton absorbs sweat during a workout, but retains that sweat in the fabric, causing t-shirts and fitness pants to feel heavy and wet against the body.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 84 percent of Americans ages 15 years old or older spend anywhere between 30 minutes to two hours exercising per workout session. So, selecting the best fitness gear can ensure that this valuable time is spent comfortably and distraction-free.

Fitness Gear 101: Save vs. Splurge

If you're ready to spend this summer catching up on lost time with a workout plan, you'll need appropriate fitness gear to hit the ground running. These activewear and accessories recommendations allow you to put in the work to stay fit, without putting up the costs of high-ticket items.

Fitness games revolutionize video gamer stereotype

To view our videos, you need to enable JavaScript. Learn how. install Adobe Flash 9 or above. Install now. Then come back here and refresh the page.

They have completely reversed the idea of a video gamer sitting hunched over on a couch for hours on end moving only his or her fingers. They are the fitness games, and there are lots and lots of them that bring the promise of a personal trainer type experience into your home for a full workout from your living room.

The latest digital version of the hot Colombian aerobic dance, Zumba, is Zumba Fitness Core.

It's the first and only fitness video game that's delivering choreography specifically for sculpting your abs and giving you a full body workout within the Zumba fitness program, said Liz Buckley from Majesco Entertainment.

And Nike, which is all over mobile phones with fitness apps, is now getting into the game with Nike+ Kinect. A workout program developers insist is tailored to you, assessing your progress every month, allows you to go head to head against others online in fitness challenges. It will even remind you via your mobile phone when it is time to workout.

This experience gives you access to the same assessment, training methods, and real-time feedback we give our elite athletes, said Stefan Olander from Nike. So following an assessment of your fitness and athleticism, you'll move straight in to the most personalized digital training experience in the world.

Nintendo is also coming out with a new version of Wii Fit for its WiiU called Wii Fit U. This one is called Hosedown, where the balance board acts as your hose and then the tablet is how you aim.

There are more than 20 new activities from Luge, from a game that challenges you to hold a gut busting plank position for as long as possible to a trampoline jump where what you see on the TV is a view from the ground. If you look at the WiiU tablet, you get a birds-eye view.

This one will also come with a portable fitness meter for inputting into the game any activity you do throughout the day away from the console.

Fort Collins Club Fitness Center Offers Relief To High Park Fire Victims, Northern Coloradans

FORT COLLINS, Colo., June 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --With the High Park Fire looming near, the Fort Collins Club fitness center is reaching out to fire victims and to northern Coloradans in general. Fort Collins Club let a local camp use its facilities after an evacuation, is hosting free Zumba class event for the Red Cross, and is reaching out to northern Coloradans for support online. Todd Heenan, Owner and General Manager of the Fort Collins Club, says, "Fort Collins Club is doing whatever we can to assist the victims of the High Park Fire and the Fort Collins community as a whole. Fort Collins is our namesake and we are always looking for ways to give back to the community that has given us so much."

The Fort Collins Club offered their facilities to 150 campers from the Sky Ranch Lutheran Camp a place to shower after they were evacuated from their camp on Tuesday, June 12, 2012. The camp was evacuated by fire officials when the High Park Fire was dangerously close to their main site 55 miles west of Fort Collins. After a long day of packing, evacuating and driving, the campers were very thankful for an opportunity to clean up. The campers have since been moved to another church camp in the area. They spent the night at Trinity Lutheran Church by Spring Canyon Park.

Spring Canyon Park will also be the location of Fort Collins Club's upcoming free Zumba class on June 20, 2012 from 6:30-8:30 pm. Those interested in participating should meet before the fitness programs scheduled start time at the Northwest Pavilion area. Donations are optional, but those who can give are encouraged to help with disaster relief for the High Park Fire, as well as countless crises around the world by making a donation to support the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. These monetary gifts enable Red Cross to provide shelter, food, emotional support and other assistance in response to disasters.

Fort Collins Club fitness center has also given thanks to those helping with the fire and promoted other charitable events, in addition to scheduled fitness programs, through their large Internet presence. With 1,100 Facebook followers, the health club posted information on their wall about the "9 Cares Colorado Shares" events this Saturday, June 16 at King Soopers locations in Fort Collins and Loveland in benefit of the Red Cross, Colorado Professional Fire Fighters Foundation and the Larimer County Food Bank. In addition, the health club has a blog that averages at 30 views a day where they have posted blogs that raise awareness about exercising safely in the currently poor air quality conditions outdoors.
