Fitness camps support more park hours for Camarillo dogs

Mike DePonio stands sentinel most evenings at Mission Oaks Park inCamarillo.

He's there with Lucy, his small and shaggy black dog who spends the evening visiting with her friends. He smiles with satisfaction as more than 30 owners and their mutts show up for a romp on the grass and an evening ofconversation.

"What's happened is that we've created community. It's the people who make it go. We clean up after and look after our dogs," DePonio said. "We've been able to maintain a place for the dogs to be dogs and for people to cometogether."

DePonio is a founding member of Friends of Camarillo Dog Parks, a group that is responsible for working with the Pleasant Valley Recreation & Park District to create off-leash areas for Camarillo dogowners.

The group has raised about $22,000 in pursuit of its goal of $30,000 and is planning its latest fundraising effort, "Unleash Your Fitness," on Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays in Camarillo andVentura.

"Everything we do is cause-inspired," said Mark Ryan, owner of Element Fitness, who will host the fitness fundraising events. Half of the money raised will go the dog park group to help build a fenced-in area at Springville Park in the Spanish Hills neighborhood. "The basis of what Element Fitness does is to provide people with opportunities to get fit in a natural environment while giving back to the community they'rein."

Ryan has had fitness programs for a number of groups, including FOOD Share and the American HeartAssociation.

"This fitness program is actually for people and not for the dogs," said Ryan, himself an owner of fourdogs.

DePonio has earned the affectionate title of "pope of Mission Oaks," while Lucy has come to be known as "the queen," said Camarillo's Pleasant Valley Recreation & Park District deserves the credit for the creation of off-leashareas.

"Camarillo is a fairly small community, but we're basically looking at three dog parks, or areas where dogs can be off-leash, DePonio said. "That's in large part due to the PVRPD listening to what we have to say and working withus."
