Angie Chandler, principal of Cedar Ridge Elementary School, does a workout during a session of the Step Into Fitness program on Thursday in the school gymnasium. Chandler said she lost 31 pounds since starting her regimen. I just followed the old advice of eat less, exercise more, she said.

Staff and parents at Cedar Ridge Elementary have found a new way to connect and get to know each other after school a fitness program held in the evenings in the school's gym.

The program, Step into Fitness, started at the school in January and was the brainchild of Principal Angie Chandler and her personal trainer, Logan McNeely, an MU student.

Chandler started training with McNeely after she had been going to a gym for a year and hadn't lost any weight. Once she started the sessions, which also offer information about healthy eating, Chandler saw the weight loss begin.

She's lost 31 pounds to date and decided to share that success.

"Teachers work really hard and don't have money to be able to afford someone to talk about fitness and nutrition," Chandler said.

Many parents faced that same problem, she said. As a solution, Chandler and McNeely decided to bring the program to parents and teachers at no cost.
