Greek election, debt crisis and G20 Summit: as it happened, June 17 – 18, 2012

David Cameron outlines five key threats to the global economy, including the "muddle-headed" thinking that over-indebted countries can spend their way out of trouble.

Cameron: Greek government delay could be dangerous Samaras wants to renegotiate bailout agreement Greek contraction accelerating, says Fitch Global (Chicago Options: ^RJSGTRUSD - news) markets falter, Spanish yields pass 7.2pc Eurozone came very close to meltdown, says ECB's Nowotny World leaders head to Mexico as G20 Summit gets under way Spanish banks need 150bn, according to reports

= Latest =

What does the eurozone need to do to stem contagion?

22.30 Right, that's the end of our marathon coverage of the Greek elections and G20 summit tonight. We'll be back tomorrow for day two of G20 in Mexico. Visit our G20 summit and financial crisis pages for more.

Goodnight.

22.77 Reforms to foster growth, such as changes to the labour market are "urgently" needed in order to put the eurozone back on a sustainable path, the IMF (Berlin: MXG1.BE - news) has said. In a report titled Fostering Growth in Europe Now , it said:

Fostering growth is always important; in the euro area it has become urgent.

If implemented correctly, reforms can boost growth by up to 4.5pc, the IMF added:

There is substantial empirical evidence that structural reforms can lift growth markedly in the medium to long term. Staff simulations show that large-scale labor, product market, and pension reforms, which cut the distance of euro area countries to growth-maximizing benchmarks in half, could boost output by 4 percent over the next five years. A pan-European approach is important: a quarter of this additional growth is expected to derive from positive cross-country and cross-reform spillovers. But one must be realistic that the near-term impact on growth, as opposed to the effect on overall confidence, will likely be modest.

PACQUIAO WATCH: Time is ticking (Last of three parts)

PACQUIAO WATCH: Time is ticking (Last of three parts) By Edwin G. Espejo | Tuesday| June 19, 2012 | Filed under: Mindaviews

Robbed or rigged: Take your pick

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/18 June) So when Manny Pacquiao almost inexplicably lost to Timothy Bradley, an early 1-7 long shot, reactions swung from one extreme of the pendulum to the other.

When the decision was announced, every living room in the Philippines tuned in to the fight collapsed into deafening silence. The shock however quickly turned into defiant howls. Then the outrage turned into bemusement and disbelief. Did they not just watch another boxing match?

From all conceivable angles and perspectives, Pacquiao looked like he was in total control of the fight. Indeed, from the statistical point of view, Pacquiao was the more effective, accurate and the bigger puncher. Oh, he landed more than Bradley by disparity ratio of close to 2 is to 1, too.

So why did Pacquiao lose?

Was he a victim of a bum, if not deliberate, decision? Was the fight an unforgivable fix? Or has Manny simply lost a step and is now ripe for the picking?

When looking at the Bradley bout, Pacquiaos 60th professional fight, it is best to range it against Mannys body of work as a prized knockout artist.

Mannys boxing career is best defined in three chapters.

The first is when Manny was virtually a non-entity in international boxing. Second is when he started to make a name for himself and finally, the third, when he hit pay dirt. You can argue that a fourth is now dawning on him. But it is not easy to exaggerate his untimely demise from the sports. Manny will tell you that straight in your face with a wide grin.

Mayor Rob Ford misses his ‘Cut the Waist’ goal

Video: Rob Ford weekly weigh-in

Mayor Rob Ford and Councillor Doug Ford at their final weigh-in of the Cut the Waist Challenge. Mayor Ford averted disaster when he lost his balance as he stepped down from the scale.

David Rider Urban Affairs Bureau Chief

Mayor Rob Fords weight-loss challenge, launched with fanfare and smiles Jan. 17, ended Monday with a grim-faced mayor missing his goal by 33 pounds and then falling off the scale.

Fords ankle appeared to buckle as he stepped down after weighing in at 313 pounds. He yelled Ow! and fell heavily on his brother, Councillor Doug Ford, in front of TV cameras outside his city hall office.

It hurts really bad, the mayor later told reporters before limping back into his office. I dont know what happened but I twisted it pretty good.

Doug Ford dreamed up Cut the Waist, a 50-pounds-in-five-months challenge, and convinced his 330-pound little brother to participate. There is a website urging others to lose weight and pledge money for charity, an official logo and an oversized scale from their label company.

Enoughs enough, the mayor said in January. Its the heaviest Ive ever been . . . Ive got young children, and this is not healthy.

He enjoyed quick success, eating like a rabbit and avoiding ice cream. He was photographed running lonely laps on a high school track.

Pounds also vanished from Doug Fords 275-pound frame, thanks to daily exercise and diet changes that curbed a serious chocolate milk habit.

Bariatric surgery may boost risk of alcohol abuse: study

Date: Monday Jun. 18, 2012 1:36 PM ET

TORONTO Adults who have a common type of bariatric surgery to lose weight have a significantly higher risk of developing alcohol abuse problems in the second year following their operations, a large study suggests.

Researchers found that patients who had the Roux-en-Y procedure -- in which a small stomach pouch is created and connected to the middle of the small intestine -- had a higher prevalence of problems with alcohol consumption compared to the year before surgery and the year immediately after.

"We found that seven per cent of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass patients reported symptoms of alcohol use disorder (AUD) in the year prior to surgery," said lead author Wendy King, an epidemiologist at the University of Pittsburgh.

That percentage didn't change much in the first year following surgery. But by Year 2, almost 11 per cent of patients were reporting potentially problematic changes in their alcohol consumption, King said from San Diego, where she was presenting the findings at a meeting of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

"Among patients who had laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, we did not find a significant difference," said King, referring to the procedure in which a band is placed around the upper stomach to reduce the amount of food that can be ingested.

To conduct the study, researchers assessed alcohol consumption patterns in 1,945 bariatric surgery patients at 10 hospitals across the United States. Within 30 days before surgery, and again one and two years after their operations, patients completed an audit to identify symptoms of alcohol use disorders, a condition that includes alcohol abuse and dependence.

Participants were categorized as having AUD if they had at least one symptom of alcohol dependence, including not being able to stop drinking once started, or alcohol-related harm, such as not being able to remember a certain event.

About 70 per cent of participants had Roux-en-Y surgery; another 25 per cent had lap banding, while the other five per cent had less common weight-loss surgical procedures.

Overall, one in eight participants reported having at least three drinks on a typical drinking day the second year after surgery. Another one in eight said they had at least six drinks on one occasion.

Tom Cruise Weight Loss 2012 Tom Cruise Fast Diet

Tom Cruise Weight Loss 2012 Tom Cruise Diet Programs - Isn't amazing how all of the celebrities you see have a celebrity diet plan for weight loss to maintain their weight. Some of them are shapely and healthy looking, and look good on camera. Others look like they haven't eaten in weeks, like they just got back from the famine in Ethiopia for a few weeks. Like they had been starving themselves to lose weight, and that is probably what they have been doing. You see it in all the tabloids, this person lost 100 pounds again, this one gained 100 pounds, and then lost 150 pounds. Some are not as dramatic; this one lost 40 pounds and is a television spokesperson, because the previous celebrity diet spokesperson gained the weight back. The fact is they may be starving themselves to lose weight, fasting like they are going through a famine.

"Click Here to Watch Weird VIDEO About The 7 Foods that KILL Abdominal Fat!"

Celebrities make dieting look so easy, don't they? One month they're on the cover of US Weekly for gaining too much weight and the next they're headlining the "sexiest beach bods" story. It is true that seriously overweight people can lose large amounts of fat in a quick amount of time, because of the large fat content in their cells. But those that are only a few pounds overweight, losing 40 pounds in a month, is not only starvation, it is malnutrition and can have serious side effects. Our body weight can fluctuate day to day and the best diets take the weight off gradually, the way it came on. If you lose a lot of weight in a short time, staying the same size will be impossible unless you follow a maintenance program for life. Good, sensible dieting means skill and will power combined. A lot of these celebrity diets or Hollywood diets are very bad for the body and the celebrities are thinking of the camera rather than their long term health. Researches indicate that individuals who indulge in a weight loss program by taking prepared meals end up losing an additional 31% weight as against those who cook their own meals. With help, losing weight is made easier and at times much faster as against doing it on your own.Diet delivery is gaining popularity in a big way as it is fairly affordable by even the common man, roughly around $20 a day with an increasing variety to choose from. A few of which include: Zone-compliant meal, low carbs plan, veggie meals, and gourmet too.

"Click Here to Watch Weird VIDEO About The 7 Foods that KILL Abdominal Fat!"

With the rapidly increasing epidemic of obesity and increasing BMI levels, there is an array of products and diet plan to aid in combating obesity. Celebrity slim diet, the basic idea is to educate people and not to depict food as an enemy. Like a lot of famous diets in Hollywood, if your body thinks you are starving, it is going to hold on to every calorie you take in to keep you from starving to death instead of burning them for energy. When you follow a properly balanced weight loss diet, your metabolism will hardly notice the decrease in calories and continue to burn fat it doesn't need to store. This is a more long-term weight loss strategy.

Celebrities do not have secrets about dieting. They are normal people like the rest of us but, unlike most of us, they have people working for them such as diet advisors and personal trainers. Celebrity diets involve a level of commitment and dedication which we struggle with. The best celebrity diets involve eating sensibly and limiting our calorie intake. Having these factors in mind will allow you to have safe and easy weight loss that will provide you with short term and long term consistent results.

Local resident to appear on Extreme Weight Loss show

By BRETT CIHON Port Orchard Independent Reporter June 15, 2012 Updated 2:54 PM

Jonathan McHenry knew he needed to lose weight. At 550 pounds, he would sit in his Port Orchard home watching the NBC reality show, The Biggest Loser and think, Why not me?

I would sit on my couch eating ice cream and brownies and crying, thinking this could change my life, 32-year-old McHenry said.

Nearly two years later, its safe to say his life has changed.

In November, McHenry finished a year of filming and training for ABCs Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition for an episode that will air July 22. Though he wont reveal his weight before the show airs, the South Kitsap High School graduate is a trainer at the Annapolis Fitness on 2065 Bay St., where he teaches a boot-camp style fitness class while keeping a full-time job as a salesman.

Hes happy, hes healthy and he feels like a new man.

All I wanted was to be healthy, he said. The show was the perfect opportunity.

McHenry was always a big guy. But it wasnt until recently, he said, that his weight reached uncontrollable levels. So in 2010, he decided to film an audition tape for The Biggest Loser. While he wasnt picked by that show, television producers came to him and told him they liked his tape and were hoping he was interested in filming for a different weight-loss program.

Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition features overweight people who are given a personal trainer for 90 days. Then, the trainer, weight-loss guru and former 650-pound virgin, Chris Powell leaves the contestant and they have the remainder of the year to live at home in their normal environment and lose weight, a unique component that truly challenges participants, McHenry said.

We do it all from home, in my own element, McHenry said. It gives people hope that they dont need to go on a ranch to lose weight.

Lose weight by changing the colour of your plate

Those given crockery which "matched" their food - red for tomato sauce, or white for cream sauce - gave themselves helpings between 17 and 22 per cent larger than those with plates of contrasting colour.

Researchers believe the phenomenon occurred because many people unthinkingly fill their plate, whatever size it is. A high contrast between colours may act as a "wake-up call" to examine the actual size of the portion.

Previous studies have already shown that buffet diners take bigger portions when given bigger plates, aided by an optical illusion which means a circle - or portion of food - appears bigger on a small plate than it does on a large one.

Further research has established that the average person eats around 92 per cent of a portion they serve themselves.

The latest study by researchers at Cornell University, in New York state, which was repeated several times on groups of 60 participants, found the actual colour of the food and plates made no difference; what mattered was the contrast between the two.

Research authors said the colour contrast appears to act as a "stop sign" reminding people to think about how much food they were serving.

Prof Brian Wansink, who runs Cornell University's Food and Brand Lab, which studies consumer behaviour, said: "People will generally serve themselves far more on a large dinner plate than they would on a smaller one, because the eye is tricked. It seems that colour contrast is one way to block this illusion."

The research author said those trying to lose weight could help themselves by buying brightly coloured or dark plates, to provide contrast with common white foodstuffs such as pasta, rice and potatoes.

Alternatively, green plates could be used as a way to trick children into eating more vegetables, he said.

Prof Wansink, president of the US Society for Nutrition Education and Behaviour said: "The secret of weight loss is a couple of small changes. One small difference like this every day could add up to a lot of pounds over a year."

OMG diet: Controversial new slimming book inspired by TOWIE might just work

The OMG diet is a global phenomenon. The book that promises to help you drop 20lb in just six weeks has outsold the Dukan Diet. Written by personal trainer Paul Khanna (under the pen name Venice A. Fulton) and inspired by TV show The Only Way Is Essex, Six Weeks To OMG: Get Skinnier Than All Your Friends has been dismissed by many doctors as gimmicky at best, and dangerous at worst. The advice, which includes skipping breakfast and going easy on the broccoli, might be bizarre, but it has sold 120,000 copies. Most bizarre of all, it has some scientific basis. MARIANNE POWER and ALICE SMELLIE spoke to experts and found what to do and what to ditch.

PUBLISHED: 16:23 EST, 16 June 2012 | UPDATED: 07:20 EST, 17 June 2012

The only way is skinny: The perpetually slimming TOWIE girls Billie Faiers, Lauren Goodger and Lydia Bright bestelling OMG diet, which makes a number of bizarre claims as to how to shed the pounds

THE CLAIM The books title is inspired by the stars of The Only Way Is Essex and their obsession with competitive dieting. Author Venice A. Fulton urges readers to be skinnier than all your friends.

THE SCIENCE A British study of 2,000 women aged 18 to 45 found that 54 per cent said the first thing they noticed about another woman was her weight and they then compared themselves with her. So playing on this competitive aspect is clever of Fulton. A US study in 2011 said our food choices are affected by our friends and if we hang out with skinny women, we are more likely to be slim too.

EXPERT SAYS Six Weeks To OMG is a catchy slogan that attracts the Facebook generation, says Donovan Pyle, cognitive behavioural therapist at The Insight Network. The quirky advice has a novelty factor and the six weeks angle appeals to our love of a quick fix. The competition of Get Skinnier than all your friends can be motivating but Id hate to think the book encourages girls to focus on being skinny rather than healthy.

VERDICT DITCH IT

THE CLAIM No carbs before Marbs, as they say in TOWIE. Fulton claims that if you want to be slim, you must aim for no more than 120 grams of carbohydrate a day. It makes no difference if you get all of your carbs from cans of coke or plates of broccoli, says the book.

THE SCIENCE Despite the sensational comparison of broccoli to Coke, Fulton is not saying broccoli is bad just that we need to limit our carbohydrate intake and make every meal half-protein if we want to stay slim. A 2008 study involving more than 1,000 overweight adults found those on high protein and low glycaemic index (slow-burning carbs) diets had more successful maintenance of weight loss than those on low-fat, low-calorie diets. Another study in Seattle showed an increase in protein resulted in rapid loss of weight and body fat.
