Want to lose weight? Go for a walk in the cold after dinner

Dr Aaron Cypess said: "We propose that agents that work similarly to cold in activating brown fat specifically can provide promising approaches to fighting obesity while minimizing other side effects.

"At the same time, we now know that ephedrine is not the way to do it."

For the study, the team gave participants injections of either ephedrine or a control saline solution and asked them to wear 'cooling vests' with water at 57 F pumped into them.

Their fat activity was then measured.

Researchers found that brown fat was the same following both the ephedrine and saline injections.

However, after the subjects wore the cooling vests for two hours, their brown fat activity was stimulated significantly.

Both interventions - ephedrine injections and the wearing of the cooling vests - did result in the same number of calories being burned, Dr. Cypess noted.

He said: "But we found that ephedrine was not using brown fat to do it.

"This is the first time it has been found that ephedrine does not turn on brown fat."

Both methods had effects of the sympathetic nervous system -- which activates the fight or flight response -- such as increased blood pressure.

Decoding The Dairy Aisle

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., June 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Have you ever walked down the dairy aisle at the market and wondered which milk is best for you and your family? Just in time for National Dairy Month this June, the California Milk Processor Board (CMPB), the creator of GOT MILK?, and Dairy Council of California will work together to educate consumers on the various milk options available today and how their choices could make a difference in their overall health.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120604/LA17782)

"Dairy milk has been a part of the American lifestyle for centuries, but families still have many questions about this beverage," says Ashley Rosales, Registered Dietitian for Dairy Council of California. "This educational outreach hopes to take a closer look at the dairy case so that families can feel good about the milk they are drinking."

Rosales, along with other registered dietitians from Dairy Council of California, will answer consumers' frequently asked questions about milk, from the differences between dairy and imitation milks to the healthfulness of flavored milks to lactose intolerance. To "Decode the Dairy Aisle," Dairy Council of California is even launching a brochure titled "Milk! Secrets, Stories & Facts of America's Favorite Natural Beverage" that can be found on http://www.gotmilk.com/news to address some of these very topics.

Q: Are all milks created equal?

It's always best to consume food and beverages closest to their natural state. Almonds, rice and soybeans are great foods to eat, but processing them and substituting them for foods from another food group does not help consumers get all the nutrients needed for a balanced diet. A comparison of nutrient facts for whole almonds, soybeans and rice reveals that they are much more nutrient-rich in their whole, not liquid, forms. When it comes to milk there's nothing more natural, wholesome and nutrient-rich than good old-fashioned dairy milk. At 25 cents per glass, milk is the healthy, affordable choice for families.

Q: Who should drink whole milk vs. low-fat (one percent, two percent) and fat-free milk?

Thankfully, milk is offered in a variety of options to support the health of people based on their individual needs. Whole milk is recommended for toddlers between one and two years old because they need fats in their diets for nerve and brain development. Beyond age two, it really depends on the individual's needs and preferences. For people looking to cut calories, choose low-fat or fat-free milk. Whole, low-fat or fat-free, all dairy milk has the same amount of calcium and contains nine essential nutrients for strong bones, muscles, hair, teeth and nails. For adults, drinking the recommended three servings of milk a day can lower the risk of osteoporosis and high blood pressure and ward against diabetes and certain types of cancer.

Q: Is chocolate milk an ideal beverage for kids to drink?

Flavored milk offers a practical way of ensuring that kids get all of the nutrients they need with just a bit of added sugar. Whether plain or flavored, milk contains nine nutrients necessary for optimal growth and development. In addition, studies show that chocolate milk competes effectively with commercial sports drinks when taken 30 minutes post-workout. Its combination of calcium, protein and carbohydrates helps replenish the muscles, which can take a beating during exercise.

VIVUS, Weight Loss, and the Patient Investor

By Jordo Bivona - June 4, 2012 | Tickers: ABT, AMLN, GSK, SNY, VVUS | 0 Comments

Jordo is a member of The Motley Fool Blog Network -- entries represent the personal opinions of our bloggers and are not formally edited.

Right from the outset, a child is exposed to a number of body image ideals that establishes the fact that our society places a lot of importance on the way we look. Though naysayers dismiss the importance of one's looks and physical appearance, we all know it way to well that our physical appearance is responsible to some extent for the way we are treated by people around us. With that in mind, the sensitive issue of being overweight always comes into picture. What one needs to understand is the difference between obesity that is linked with lifestyle patterns and obesity that is linked to medical or genetic causes.

In either case, the overweight individual experiences an immense pressure from within and from friends and family to reduce weight either for aesthetic or medical reasons. Either ways, being proactive about losing weight is always a good idea. However, the route to losing weight is what bothers most people. Dietary changes and regular exercise are extremely crucial in the reduction of weight and maintaining a healthy body. Moreover, lifestyle changes can impact a person's quest to losing weight as well. The most controversial of allweight-loss approachesis pharmacotherapy.

It is controversial because many people misuse weight loss drugs and still many others take the wrong ones, when they may actually require justlifestyle management techniquesincluding dietary changes and an active lifestyle. It is rather difficult to pinpoint and declare who would benefit the most from weight loss drugs. Most physicians agree that those who are morbidly obese and those who are at risk of severe health problems due to their obesity require weight loss medications.

If we were to consider pharmacological agents that reduce or control weight, we would have to wade through murky waters. FDA has approved only orlistat (Xenical) for long-term use. By inhibiting pancreatic lipase, it reduces the absorption of fat in the intestine.GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK)sells Orlistat as Alli in the U.S. and the U.K. whereasRoche Holding AG (RHHBY.PK)sells it as Xenical in other countries.

There are also generics of orlistat available in Russia and India. It has a risk of liver injury, but the documented cases are few andfar between. Sibutramine is an appetite suppressant that helps by quelling pangs of hunger. It was marketed byAbbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT)until it was withdrawn from the market due to cardiovascular events and strokes. This drug is similar to Rimonabant, which was withdrawn from the market bySanofi-Aventis (NYSE: SNY)back in 2009 due to several risk factors.

Amylin Pharmaceuticals' (NASDAQ: AMLN)Exenatide is used to treat diabetes but is sometimes used as a weight loss drug as well. However, it is recommended only for those who have Type 2 Diabetes. Amylin's other diabetes drug pramlintide is currently being tested as a treatment for obesity among those who do not have diabetes. Green tea extract, raspberry ketone and other herbal extracts have been used to treat obesity with varying degrees of success. Nonetheless, we must bear in mind that weight loss drugs and treatments by major pharmaceutical companies are very few.

Of the newer drugs that are being investigated, I am particularly impressed withVivus' (NASDAQ: VVUS)Qnexa, which is a combination of the drugs phentermine and topiramate. Phentermine is known to suppress appetite, while topiramate is used as an anticonvulsant but causes weight loss as a side effect. FDAvoted to recommendQnexa as an obesity treatment option in February 2012. Final approval will happen sometime later in 2012. This is certainly going to drive Vivus' stock up the mark and seems to be a very promising drug to help people lose weight.

We must also consider pTeroPure pterostilbene, which is a pure form of trans-pterostilbene found in fruits and the bark of certain trees. Pterostilbene is known to have health properties similar to red wine, as it contains resveratrol. In fact, the company thatdeveloped the ingredient,ChromaDex (CDXC.OB)won the 2010 North American Frost & Sullivan Award for Most Promising Ingredient of the Year. pTeroPure pterostilbene is expected to be used in the treatment of cancer, blood pressure, diabetes, stress and anti-ageing. It is also expected to be a great weight loss drug but that is something that will have to be observed through the next few months.

Conference aims to reduce shame and increase education surrounding eating disorders

Elaine Stevenson holds a portrait of her daughter Alyssa, with a rosary draped across it. (COLE BREILAND/WINNIPEG FREE PRESS)

It's been 10 years since Elaine Stevenson lost her 24-year-old daughter, Alyssa, to anorexia. The River Heights mother and advocate wants to make sure other families don't go through the pain and heartache hers did.

So over the past few weeks, Stevenson has been trying to get the word out about Setting the Table for Recovery -- the first ever eating-disorders conference hosted by the Canadian Mental Health Association, Manitoba division, taking place Friday at the Viscount Gort.

Her goal? To uncover a set of illnesses shrouded in darkness. She wants health-care providers, teachers, families and patients to attend so they can know how to recognize and deal with an eating disorder.

"What's sort of sad about this illness is that it's cloaked in shame and secrecy and embarrassment," says Stevenson, who helped organize the conference.

Tracey Gold, an actress from the popular 1980s sitcom Growing Pains, will talk about her own struggles with anorexia in her Friday morning keynote address. She'll also be on hand for a social evening the night before, where she will mingle with guests and answer their questions.

Doctors, therapists and dentists will also present practical information about how to prevent eating disorders and cope with them.

"Oral health care is extremely important for people suffering from eating disorders. Unfortunately, our daughter ended up losing all her teeth. The acid of someone who is purging (engaging in self-induced vomiting) can really, really destroy the teeth and do it quickly," says Stevenson, who speaks matter-of-factly about the ins and outs of living with eating disorders.

There will also be a panel to talk about body-image issues among boys and young men, as well as the types of therapies available, including art therapy.

Infinite Power Solutions Demonstrates Breakthrough Battery Technology For Redefining Smart Phone And Tablet Design

LITTLETON, Colo., June 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Infinite Power Solutions, Inc. (IPS), a global leader in developing and manufacturing high performance solid-state, rechargeable, thin-film batteries, today announced it has successfully demonstrated a new battery technology to replace conventional lithium-ion batteries and redefine the design of smart phones, tablets and other consumer devices by enabling thinner form factors and better performance. IPS demonstrated record-breaking energy storage capacity for an organic-free, all-solid-state, thin-film battery. Using single-sided deposition, a paper-thin rechargeable cell achieved a capacity density of 1.25mAh/cm2. IPS also announced it has already initiated talks with original equipment manufacturers for future adoption of this technology in consumer devices. Furthermore, IPS released a white paper documenting a path to manufacturing this new battery technology using roll-to-roll manufacturing and double-sided deposition in order to achieve a capacity density of 2.5mAh/cm2, which is equivalent to prismatic lithium-ion cells (but without the risk of thermal runaway), and at comparable production costs. This new solid-state battery could be manufactured in volume for less than $1/Wh and, when fully packaged, provide 700Wh/litera 25 percent increase in energy density over today's lithium-ion cells.

"Today, smart phones are limited by and, to a degree, designed around the battery. With this new technology we are moving toward designing the battery around the phone, thereby impacting how smart phones and other devices look and perform, as well as which companies win and lose market share in the future," declared Jim Norrod, IPS' president and chief executive officer. "This is simply a better battery technology for today's smart phones and other devices. It is thinner and more flexible in how it can be shaped, promises more volumetric energy density and is also safer, while still being comparably priced. It is based on proprietary IPS technology, which means the consumer electronics company possessing it will have a sustainable advantage in terms of styling, performance and safety. In our view this is a game changer in the mobile electronics landscape and especially the smart phone market, where styling and performance are paramount to market success."

"We have made significant strides in developing both the technology and manufacturing roadmap for producing the next generation of batteries for consumer devices," commented Dr. Bernd Neudecker, IPS' chief technology officer. "Battery experts know that it's extremely difficult to maintain high energy density, regardless of the battery chemistry, as the cell thickness is reduced. This is especially true when going below 2mm of thickness for a fully packaged battery. However, by using our unique battery architecture, all-solid-state electrolyte and proprietary manufacturing process, energy densities of more than 700Wh/liter can be achieved."

High-capacity cells can be arranged in a variety of configurations, including designing a battery around the form factor of the display of a smart phone or tablet. For example, cells can be safely stacked in a parallel configuration to form a 3.95V all-solid-state, thin-film battery pack about the size and thinness of five standard playing cards, which is three times thinner than today's lithium-ion cell-phone batteries of equivalent capacity. Such a battery would have a capacity of approximately 1.4Ah with a maximum current of 7A and could serve a variety of common hand-held consumer devices. Due to the all-solid-state (completely dry) nature of this technology, there is no organic liquid or gel electrolyte that needs to be safely contained, unlike prismatic lithium-ion cells. Therefore, IPS can leverage its proprietary flexible circuit encapsulation to achieve the thinnest battery encapsulation possible and enable the thinnest smart phones ever marketed.

IPS' technical white paper entitled, "Organic-Free, All-Solid-State, Thin-Film Batteries for Cell Phones, Tablets, and Future Devices," discusses how the company has exceeded the perceived limits of thin-film battery technology and how these batteries can be manufactured in the future. The white paper includes an overview description of the proposed battery chemistry, architecture and performance advantages, as well as the projected materials and manufacturing costs. It can be downloaded from the IPS website at http://www.infinitepowersolutions.com/images/stories/IPS%20All-Solid-State%20Battery%20for%20Cell%20Phones.pdf.

Infinite Power Solutions, Inc. (IPS) a U.S. clean-technology company is a global leader in manufacturing solid-state, rechargeable, thin-film batteries for embedded applications. Ten Really Expensive Auto Repair Mistakes to Avoid

CARSON, Calif., June 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- About 60% of car owners who normally take their vehicle to the repair shop report spending between $500 and $2,000+ a year on auto repair and maintenance while 60% of DIYers report saving $500 or more (over half report saving $1,000+) from doing their own auto repairs, according to surveys by AutoMD.com(1). This represents a considerable saving/spend gap. To help close this gap, AutoMD.com has identified some of the most common, and most costly, auto repair mistakes that car owners should avoid.

"At AutoMD.com we are always looking for ways to help car owners save precious dollars while keeping their vehicles running safely. This is why our experts have put together a list of simple tips to help pre-empt costly auto repair mistakes," said Brian Hafer, VP of Marketing at AutoMD.com. "By following this advice, car owners can save hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on auto repairs."

AutoMD.com's Top Ten Really Expensive Auto Repair Mistakes:

Mistake #1: Neglecting preventative maintenance and minor repairs.Cost: $1,000s Ignoring simple preventative maintenance, like changing the engine oil and filter, could damage your engine and replacing that engine could cost thousands(2) of dollars! Failing to make minor car repairs today, such as replacing a thermostat or front brake pads, could mean more expensive repairs tomorrow. Other simple, but important, repair and maintenance tasks car owners can do on their own or have a mechanic perform at an affordable price include changing the transmission fluid; checking the coolant level, mixture, and condition, and checking the vehicle's tire pressure on a regular basis. Bottom Line: Don't put off to tomorrow, what can be done today. Click here for a list of repairs car owners should never ignore.

Mistake #2: Not asking for your parts back. Cost: Unnecessary $$ If a part needs to be replaced on your car, always ask for your old part back; simply ask the mechanic to place the old part in the new part's box. Unfortunately, some dishonest repair shops may charge you for work that was not done or repairs that are not necessary. Asking for your old parts back confirms that the new part was actually installed, and it keeps the mechanic from replacing a part that is still good. Bottom Line: Not asking for your old parts back could mean paying for an unnecessary repair, or paying for a job that was not performed!

Mistake #3: Neglecting your tires. Cost: More gas $$$ + tire replacement ($140 - $600+[3]), and loss of safety (priceless!)Driving on underinflated tires can shorten the life of your tires, increase tire wear and lead to significant tire damage from heat, potholes and other road hazards. If the tire fails completely, you could lose control of the vehicle! Plus, keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure can improve your gas mileage by up to 3.3 percent. And don't be tempted to get more mileage out of your tires than they can safely give by driving on them when they are bald. Driving on bald tires can reduce vehicle traction and lead to an accident. Bottom Line: Proper maintenance not only extends the life of your tires, it means safer driving and better gas mileage. Click here for AutoMD.com's Tire Care Tips. How to check tire pressure

Mistake #4: Ignoring dashboard warning lights. Cost: $1,000s! Loss of safety (priceless!)Dashboard warning lights are just that, warning lights! Pay attention to them they could be warning you about a serious maintenance problem that could lead to expensive repairs or unsafe driving. Be sure to read your owner's manual and familiarize yourself with what the different warning lights on your car's dashboard mean Check Engine Light, Oil Light, Temperature Light, Brake Light and what action you should take for each. Never ignore your Check Engine Light, thinking the car is running fine. Your MPG could be reduced by as much as 30%. A blinking Check Engine light indicates a severe misfire that could damage your car's expensive catalytic converter. Ignoring the oil and temperature lights can result in an engine replacement meaning thousands of dollars out of your pocket. Bottom Line: Pay attention to all your car's symptoms, including warning lights.

Mistake #5: Telling your mechanic what parts to replace. Cost: Double your $$ (or more!)Today's vehicles are extremely complex, and while it is a good idea to do your research, some vehicle symptoms can be misleading. For example, you may be convinced that your car needs new spark plugs or an engine tune-up, when you really need the MAF sensor cleaned. If you tell your mechanic to replace the spark plugs instead of asking him to diagnose the problem, he will do it and charge you for it, leaving you with the same unresolved issue. Bottom Line: Be informed, but listen to the experts, otherwise you could end up paying for an unnecessary repair, while the original issue remains unresolved.Click here to see a list of commonly misdiagnosed vehicle symptoms and repairs.

Mistake #6: Not doing simple repairs yourself. Cost: Up to $200!(4) Rather than spending time and money at the repair shop, try doing some of the easiest repairs yourself, such as replacing wiper blades, replacing a light bulb, even replacing a fuse and an air filter. Reference your owner's manual and go online for videos and how to guides (AutoMD.com's how-to guides provide step by step instructions for these repairs). And, these jobs just may provide a stepping stone and the courage you need to attempt even more of your own car repairs, which can lead to more savings. Bottom Line: Doing simple repairs yourself could actually save you time, as well as money.Click here for a list of repairs car owners can, and should, do themselves.

Mistake #7: Failing to properly communicate your repair issue. Cost: Time and $$ at the repair shop: Labor rate is $40-$200+/hour!(5)If you can't describe the problem effectively, your mechanic will spend more time diagnosing (meaning more labor costs) and may come to the wrong conclusion! Write down what you hear, feel, see, and smell before you arrive and keep a log of exactly when the symptoms occur (for instance, when you're braking or when you're driving over a certain speed), and share this with your mechanic. Also, note the location and frequency of the symptoms, and if any repairs were done on the vehicle recently - sometimes a problem is related to the last repair. You can also go online to get help diagnosing your car's problem - AutoMD.com has an easy-to-use diagnostic tool that provides a list of questions your mechanic might ask, as well as assistance to help you troubleshoot the problem(s) yourself. Bottom Line: Describing your repair issue accurately will save time, money and headaches.

Vegetarian diet provides good nutrition, health benefits, study finds

A vegetarian diet provides adequate nutrition to adults and children and can also reduce health problems, an Australian study has found.

The scientific research review, "Is a vegetarian diet adequate?" published in the Medical Journal of Australia on Monday, puts to rest the long-held belief a vegetarian diet lacks sufficient protein and iron, The Advertiser reported.

The study found those who adopted a vegetarian diet are receiving adequate levels of protein, iron and zinc, and are less likely to suffer from heart disease, colorectal cancer, type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Nutritionist Rosemary Stanton said there were no significant health differences in babies born to vegetarian mothers and no noticeable differences in the growth of vegetarian children compared to children who consumed meat as part of their diet.

Although vegetarians who do not eat fish may be receiving less Omega 3 fatty acids than considered desirable, vegetarians do not exhibit signs of clinical deficiency.

Deficiencies in vitamin B12 were noted in vegans -- vegetarians who shun any animal based product including milk and eggs -- and as B12 is required to help make red blood cells and to keep nerves functioning, the study recommends they either take a daily supplement or eat more B12-fortified foods.

Stanton said the average meat-eating Australian consumes significantly more protein than required, and the study almost certainly proves it is not necessary to eat meat daily.

"Not everyone needs or wants to become vegetarian, but eating more plant-based meals is a good recipe for our own health and that of the planet," Stanton said.

'Fit2Fat2Fit' Author Drew Manning's Top 5 Weight-Loss Mistakes to Avoid

Credit: fit2fat2fit.com

ABC News Sabina Ghebremedhin reports:

A little more than a year ago, personal trainer Drew Manning stopped working out, and started eating fast food, white bread, sugary cereal and soda.

Manning, a self-proclaimed fitness addict, started the weight-gain journey to better understand what his overweight clients go through. He let himself go completely, and chronicled the process in video blog on his website, Fit2Fat2Fit.com.

Manning gained 23.5 pounds by week 4. As the weeks progressed, his confidence and his health took a downturn.

He started to get winded easily, and his glucose level and blood pressure were high. Its getting a little scary, he said in one of his video blogs.

Mannings wife, Lynn, was prepared to see the physical changes in her husband, but didnt expect the emotional and personality changes that came with the weight gain.

His self-confidence, that completely went away and depleted, she said, explaining that he was becoming lethargic, lazy, not helping around the house.

I was in denial at first until she kept pointing out the things I was doing, Manning said today on Good Morning America. But I did become lazier. I had less energy so I did become exhausted and I kept seeing how it affected our relationship because of that. And so thats where the biggest surprise was, the emotional [part].

When Manning started his experiment on May 7, 2011, he had a 34.5-inch waist and 17-inch neck, and he weighed 193 pounds. Six months later, he had a 48-inch waist, 19-inch neck and he weighed 265 pounds. His clothes didnt fit.

Jessica Simpson and Other Celebs Making Big Cash with Weight Loss Deals

Jessica Simpson made the rumors official: She's signed on to lose the post-baby pounds with Weight Watchers.

"So excited to be part of the Weight Watchers family," she tweeted on May 30.

The singer has reportedly ditched fast food to get ready for the weight loss, but she's still considering which trainer she'll use to whip herself into shape. The two options are reportedly Danny Musico, her fiance Eric Johnson's trainer, and Mike Alexander, the man who got her into shape for 2005's "Dukes of Hazard," according to US Weekly.

"As soon as Jessica heals from the C-section, she is extremely determined to get back in the gym and work out," a source told US Weekly. "She wants to show the world and is excited to do it."

It's not confirmed how much weight she wants to lose with her $4-million Weight Watchers endorsement deal - we've heard anywhere from 60 lbs. to close to 100 lbs. However, we do know that she'll have plenty of motivation since other celebrities have dropped the lbs. with help of weight loss program endorsements.

Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson is basically the face of Weight Watchers these days. The singer dropped 80 lbs. on the program - it's like she just emerged one day with a dramatically smaller frame. According to a post on Weight Watchers, Hudson's did it by eating foods like Kashi GoLean Crunch Cereal, skim milk, sweet potatoes and lots of Greek yogurt.

Charles Barkley

Charles Barkley came out in January saying that Weight Watchers had helped him drop 38 lbs. off his famously hefty frame. However, he told fellow TNT sports announcers Reggie Miller and Kevin Harlan that it was all a scam.

"I thought this was the greatest scam going-getting paid for watching sports, this Weight Watchers thing is a bigger scam," he said, thinking that the microphones were off. He received some flack for the comment, though it seems like he meant that earning money for doing something he'd do for free - like eating - is just like getting money for something else he loves, sports.
