After Liposuction, Exercise Makes Fat Loss Last

Studies suggest that liposuction causes a rebound in fat gain, but not necessarily back to the areas where you lost it.

You cant get something for nothing especially when it comes to weight loss.

A new study by Brazilian researchers shows that when patients lose fat through liposuction a popular cosmetic surgery that sucks away fat cells from under the skin it tends to come back. Worse, it gets redistributed deep within patients abdomen, where it can cause more damage to health than did the subcutaneous fat it replaced.

The good news is that theres a way to maintain lipos slimming effect: good old-fashioned exercise.

In the study, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, researchers at the University of So Paulo recruited 36 healthy but inactive women aged 20 to 35. The women were not obese, but all volunteered to have 2.5 to 3 lbs. of abdominal fat removed through liposuction.

By six months after surgery, half of the women had regained fat largely as visceral fat, the type that accumulates around organs deep within the abdomen and is known to cause metabolic changes that increase risks for heart disease and diabetes. These women gained 10% more visceral fat than theyd had before surgery.

The other half of the participants didnt gain back the fat. Why? Because they had been randomly assigned to start exercising after surgery. Compared with their counterparts who remained sedentary after liposuction, these women started a four-month workout regimen, involving both cardio and weight-lifting three times a week. Not only didnt they gain back the fat, but they ended up with less fat in their bodies overall. They also got physically fitter and showed improved insulin sensitivity.

Why liposuction may trigger visceral fat gain isnt fully understood. The authors speculate that people may expend less energy after the surgery, which leads to fat gain. Because the body is finely tuned to defend its fat stores, it will try to compensate for the abrupt loss of fat. But exercise may mitigate that drive and recalibrate how much the body thinks it should weigh.

Seniors in Somerset County are invited to participate in water exercise programs

The Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services invites active older adults to participate in a water fitness program. People age 60 and over who enjoy pool exercises can choose from a variety of water exercise programs being offered at the Somerset Valley YMCA in the Bridgewater Aquatic Center, located at 601 Garretson Road in Bridgewater, and at the Somerset Hills YMCA, located at 140 Mt. Airy Road in Bernards.

Courses at the Somerset Valley YMCA include water Pilates, hydro and deep water exercise classes.

The cost for an eight-week course at the Somerset Valley YMCA is $28.

The Somerset Hills YMCA hosts two water exercise programs. The Arthritis Foundation Aquatics program (AFAP) offers a series of gentle activities performed in the shallow end of the pool that are designed for people with arthritis, rheumatic diseases and individuals who are recovering from an injury. It is not necessary to know how to swim for these classes. The other program, titled WET/Got Water? is a moderate to intermediate water exercise course.

The cost for an eight-week course at the Somerset Hills YMCA is $40. Participants are asked to complete the registration form in advance. To sign up for a course or to obtain the appropriate registration form, contact the county Office on Aging and Disability Services at 908-704-6346.

At new Lurie Children’s Hospital, ‘back to just taking care of kids’

A sick child in need of an organ at the newly opened Lurie Childrens Hospital got express delivery this week.

With a live donor at nearby Northwestern Memorial Hospital, a transport team used Luries fifth floor bridge to carry over the harvested organ.

And new mothers at Prentice Womens Hospital at Northwestern also got an added bonus: traveling over the bridge to visit their sick newborns at Lurie.

Week one is over for the staff and patients at the Streeterville hospital, which safely transported 126 patients from its now shuttered Lincoln Park hospital on June 9.

Nearly 15,000 boxes were relocated; about 4,700 pieces of medical equipment were moved. And more than 1,200 computers and printers were brought over.

Less than 12 hours after the move, Dr. Tord Alden was performing an emergency brain surgery in one of the new operating rooms.

Within four hours, the neurosurgeon successfully removed a brain tumor affecting a boys vision.

Alden was the first to use Luries operating rooms. At first, he says, things looked a bit different. But when the boy came in, everything snapped into place.

Gaining weight after pregnancy is natural. Then why fuss over Aishwarya Rai's extra pounds, ask health experts.

Regular crunches, low-impact exercises and small but frequent meals a day can help new moms get back in shape. But stay away from dieting.

Gynaecologist Archana Dhawan says it is unfair to compare Aishwarya's frame with those of Hollywood's yummy mummies as the body structure of each person varies.

"People have their own pace to lose weight, or they would have their own targets. Some can lose in six months whereas others take more than a year. As long as you are making a constant effort and you are feeding the baby regularly and doing exercise, you can lose weight," Dhawan, from the capital's The Nurture Clinic, told IANS.

"Whether it's Aishwarya or any normal adult, everybody has a right to decide at what speed they want to lose weight. As long as you are losing it, good enough. As per geographical distribution, the body frame also varies across the world," she said.

A proper exercise regimen is of utmost importance, says Amrapali Patil, CEO of Trim N Tone The Obesity Clinic.

"Exercising after pregnancy helps to lose those extra pounds put on during pregnancy, alleviate postpartum depression. Unlike dieting, it doesn't interfere with your breastfeeding," she said.

Experts suggest yoga, indoor exercises and regular crunches to shed extra flab.

Researchers from Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry (PCMD), University of Exeter, have received funding of over 86,000 from the Leverhulme Trust to carry out research over two years to investigate the effectiveness of weight loss groups to those who are obese.

Led by Dr. Mark Tarrant from PCMD, the research project will investigate the management of obesity based on the idea that psychological and physical health is inextricably linked to an individual's membership of social groups especially how they identify themselves as group members.

Previous studies have shown how involvement in social groups that are meaningful to the individual can benefit health and coping with chronic illness. This approach is called "Social Cure" and, taking this as a starting point, the PCMD team will test a new model which they term the "Social Identity Model of Obesity Management" (SIMOM).

SIMOM starts from the position that organised weight-management groups are a potential source of social support which empower people with obesity to achieve psychological well-being and, in turn, beneficial changes to their behaviour and physical health.

What makes SIMOM unique is that it predicts the effectiveness of a weight-management group to the individual in relation to its psychological meaningfulness to them that is, whether or not they identify with it.

The research team will carry out a 12-month longitudinal study and a series of interviews with members of weight-management groups in Devon. The team aims to generate a comprehensive understanding of the impact of group participation on health it is expected that the results of the study will contribute to the evidence base for the future development of weight-management programmes.

Said Dr. Tarrant: "The need for research such as this that supports those with obesity towards a more healthy lifestyle is critical. The estimated cost to the economy each year of work absences from weight-related illness is 16 billion, not counting the healthcare costs of treating obesity. And obesity is on the rise: in 2009 22 per cent of men and 24 per cent of women were obese, and this is expected to increase to 47 per cent and 36 per cent respectively by 2025."

He added: "Based on our new model we expect to recommend that group-based weight-management programmes for obesity be designed to reinforce a sense of identification in group members in order to trigger the potential for social support and a social cure."
