Anytime Fitness Announces New Master Franchise Agreement For India

HASTINGS, Minn. and NEW DELHI, June 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Anytime Fitness, the world's largest co-ed chain of health clubs, has signed a master franchise agreement for India with New Delhi-based House of Fitness Pvt. Ltd.

"We are extremely enthusiastic about the growth potential for Anytime Fitness in India," states John Kersh, Vice President of International Development for Anytime Fitness. "Our Indian associates from House of Fitness are well-respected and they have a solid combination of fitness industry experience and business acumen which, we are sure, will contribute to strong performance of the brand."

According to statistics from the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association's 2012 Global Report on the State of the Health Club Industry, less than one tenth of one percent of the Indian population are members of health clubs. This figure is in sharp contrast to the United States, where over 17% of the total population are health club members, and to Europe, where more than 10% of the population are members in the majority of countries.

"Indians are becoming increasingly health conscious and the Anytime Fitness concept provides a perfect solution for busy people looking for a comfortable and convenient facility in which to exercise," stated Vishal Kwatra, COO of House of Fitness.

The recently-concluded agreement follows a master franchise format, in which House of Fitness will develop their own Anytime Fitness gyms, sell sub-franchises and provide on-going support to franchisees, and will promote and market the brand in India. Anytime Fitness will, in turn, provide exclusive rights to House of Fitness for use of the brand's trademarks, systems and intellectual property during the term of the agreement, and will support the master franchisee via its corporate headquarters in the United States.

This is the second foray into the Indian market for Anytime Fitness. Four Anytime Fitness clubs had been opened under a prior master franchise agreement with a different company, but that relationship terminated following that master franchisee's failure to comply with the terms of its master franchise agreement."

Exercise is Key to Successful Aging

Seniors are sweating a lot of things these days, but in at least one case, this is a good thing. People from their 60s to their 80s are demanding much higher levels of physical fitness facilities and programs. At neighborhood gyms and retirement communities throughout the country, a pronounced fitness and wellness trend is making itself felt.

[In Pictures: The Best Places to Retire in 2012.]

The physical and mental benefits of vigorous exercise have become increasingly clear in recent years. So has the linkage with fitness and diet. Lastly, the social benefits of fitness and wellness classes are being recognized as a powerful benefit as well as a marketing tool to get seniors into pools and onto treadmills, bikes, and cross trainers.

Exercise and weight are the two variables that older people associate most strongly with their well-being, according to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. "Frequent exercise, not being obese, and visiting a dentist are even more important than are healthy eating and not smoking to reporting great health in old age," Gallup says. "While good health habits alone cannot stave off the effects of aging, those who do practice good health habits give themselves an edge in old age."

Del Webb has more than 50 active adult communities throughout the country designed for residents age 55 and older. Nearly three-fourths of Webb residents say they exercise regularly. Beyond making more use of Webb's on-site fitness centers and organized group sporting activities, Webb says, residents are branching out into more physically demanding activities.

[See Why Do Smart People Make Bad Investments?]

"Baby Boomers enjoy experiences, rather than just activities. They are also known to go to great lengths to resist the realities of aging," says Judy Julison, the company's national lifestyle director. "Golf and tennis are still popular, but now so are outdoor adventure activities like sky diving, marathons, rock climbing, off-roading, and marathon cycling with new friends."

If seniors are otherwise healthy into their 70s and even 80s, there is no physical reason they can't engage in strenuous physical activities. Social attitudes about the physical capabilities of older bodies are slowly changing, but remain an impediment to healthy aging for many seniors. Still, public gyms as well as those at private senior communities have introduced more aggressive weight and cardiovascular programs for seniors in recent years.

In addition to meeting residents' needs, many retirement communities also are trying to expand revenues by opening their facilities to people in nearby towns and cities. So they're putting in more equipment and more diverse fitness programs. While step aerobics may still be a popular offering for people in their mid-80s, retirement community pools also are seeing more lap lanes and places where people can engage in more vigorous workouts.

Get the skinny on the OMG diet

You've heard of Dukan, scoffed fat on Atkins, fainted from drinking only honey and lemon water and lost friends from the noxious side-effects of the cabbage diet. Now there's a new one, this time designed to inspire jealousy and help you to "get skinnier than all your friends". Six Weeks to OMG comes out in print next month. It has knocked the Dukan Diet off the top of the iTunes diet book chart and a subsidiary of Penguin has bought it for a seven-figure sum.

The book, by British sports scientist and personal trainer Paul Khanna, who goes by the pen name Venice A Fulton, offers controversial tips, such as skip breakfast, take cold baths and drink black coffee. But for short-term weight loss, can the OMG diet really help you shed pounds? Consultant Dietitian and Sports Nutritionist Linia Patel, Dr Christian Jessen, the presenter of the Bafta award-winning Embarrassing Bodies series, and the celebrity fitness trainer Jay Darrell Ingleton explain the science behind Fulton's unconventional theories. I've also given Fulton's tips a try, in a (highly unscientific) experiment, to see how tough they are to stick to.

Skip breakfast

Fulton says skipping breakfast will help to stop you becoming a "fadult" (that's a fat adult to you and me). "Breakfast is for wimps!", he writes. He recommends exercising first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and then only eating once three hours have passed, so that your body is forced to burn stored fat rather than food.

The expert view: "Skipping breakfast is a weight-loss disaster," says Patel. "When you wake up your body produces cortisol, a stress hormone that helps store fat. If you don't eat, you are putting your body under more strain and stress and therefore more likely to gain weight around the middle. Also, you will want sugary and fatty things when you're really hungry, which add to weight gain."

My experience: I skipped breakfast and still had enough energy to run up the stairs on the underground (my "workout"). It didn't affect my concentration and I ate breakfast at 10am. It was easy, but I consumed exactly the same amount that I usually eat, so I doubt it made much impact on my weight.

Three reasons you're not losing weight

There are plenty of reasons why many of us struggle to lose weight, which is partly why we have an obesity crisis on our hands. Part of the problem is that it is often the incidental reasons that sneak into our lifestyles that can quietly add a few stubborn kilos.

And I'm not talking about the stock complaints. Every professional hears them: highway patrol officers must get sick of "I didn't realise I was going that fast", and tax accountants probably have to feign surprise at "I didn't have time to organise my receipts" when a shoebox full of paper is plonked on their desk.

I seem to get "I've tried everything but nothing seems to work", usually when I'm faced with someone who has clearly spent the past few years in a pretty good paddock. (For the record, this is exactly what every contestant tells me on arrival in The Biggest Loser house.)

So, such things aside, here are my top three reasons.

1. YOUR PORTIONS ARE TOO BIG

Here's a little drill. Buy a nice piece of nutritious salmon. Now take it home and weigh it. Salmon comes in at about eight kilojoules a gram, and I'm guessing that: a) your salmon fillet weighs 250 to 300g; and b) you would normally eat that much in one sitting. I recommend about 150g of meat or fish at a sitting. Most of us probably eat close to double that.

2. YOU'RE NOT AN 'INTENTIONAL' EATER

We have a rule in our house that no one is allowed to eat unless they are seated at the table. If we didn't have this rule, I'd be a contestant on The Biggest Loser, not a trainer. Most excess kilojoules are taken in when we're sitting on the couch doing what I call "unintentional" eating. This is where we have a biscuit here and a soft drink there. It all adds up. By contrast, intentional eating is where you: a) think about what you're going to eat; b) buy it; c) prepare it; d) cook it; and e) eat it.

3. YOU'RE GETTING OLDER

I know that's nothing you want to hear, but unfortunately weight management gets trickier from about 27 years old. Our metabolism slows down (and the production of the hormones that help support it), and our ability to burn kilojoules slows with it. Couple this with the fact you probably have more money for food and alcohol, and you're burning your metabolic candle at both ends. If nothing seems to be shifting the kilos, it may be due to an unexpected reason.

Patients with type 2 diabetes lose weight, decrease insulin in meal replacement trial

Public release date: 11-Jun-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Contact: Harry Wade harry.wadenyc@yahoo.com 917-482-9057 Cooney Waters Group, Inc.

Philadelphia June 11, 2012 A pilot study shows that a protein-rich meal replacement made from soy, yogurt, and honey (Almased) helps patients with type 2 diabetes lose weight, gain better control of their blood sugar, and decrease their daily insulin dose. Patients in the study also lowered their body mass index (BMI), waist and hip circumference, and fasting glucose levels, while improving their HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides. The results were reported at the American Diabetes Association's 72nd Scientific Sessions.

"In light of the number of people with type 2 diabetes related to obesity, it's very important to investigate and explore any new tool that may have a positive effect on both weight and blood sugar," said Stephan Martin, MD, medical director of the West-German Diabetes and Health Centre in Dsseldorf, Germany, who conducted the study. "One of the most interesting findings to us was that Almased's positive effect on blood sugar was independent of its effect on weight loss."

Significant changes were seen at 12 weeks in the various study outcomes measured:

While the formal study with Almased ended after 12 weeks, investigators followed up with patients after one and a half years. Four patients who continued to use Almased reported additional decreases in insulin doses, HbA1c, and weight. Two of these patients were able to stop insulin injections completely. The long-term use among some patients points to the ease of incorporating Almased into a daily dietary routine suitable for people with type 2 diabetes. A larger study of more than 300 patients is underway in Germany to confirm the findings of this pilot study. Both of these studies are sponsored by Almased-Wellness-GmbH.

"Some people will be surprised that patients could stop insulin completely; we need to change the thinking that once insulin is started there is no way to stop it," said Dr. Martin. "Motivated patients who are committed to long-term dietary changes and increased physical activity can make a real change in their weight and metabolic measures."

"The problem of obesity and type 2 diabetes is large and growing," said Silke Ullmann, MPH, RD, LDN, of Almased USA. "We are committed to studying Almased to see how it may help people lose weight and gain better control of blood sugar levels."

The pilot study enrolled 22 men and women with type 2 diabetes who were also obese. For the first week of the study, participants replaced all three daily meals with Almased. In weeks two through four, they replaced two meals and had a protein-rich lunch. For the last eight weeks of the study they only replaced one meal with Almased. Fifteen participants (68%) completed the study, a rate comparable to other diet-change studies.

Trial of artificial pancreas gives diabetes patients a break

For Terra Hillyer, who has Type 1 diabetes, enrolling in a clinical trial for a new medical device called the artificial pancreas provided a glimpse of what life might be like without the constant checks of blood sugar levels and infusions of insulin that currently mark her days.

The first thing I do when I wake up is check my blood sugar, Hillyer says. It is the background noise of my life.

Except for one day recently, when the mother of two checked into the Sansum Diabetes Research Institute in Santa Barbara. There, under medical supervision, she allowed herself to be hooked up to an experimental device that might help turn back the clock to the time before she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 17.

In people with Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas fails to produce insulin, a key hormone in the regulation of blood sugar. As a result, patients need to carefully monitor their blood sugar levels and administer insulin on their own. The artificial pancreas is designed to manage the administration of insulin and control the users blood sugar automatically -- meaning that the participants, for the first time since childhood, could put their blood sugar readings out of their minds.

I called it my diabetes spa day, Hillyer said with a laugh. The artificial pancreas -- made by Animas Corp., a unit of Johnson & Johnson -- is really a combination of two state-of-the-art technologies in diabetes management: the continuous glucose monitor, which measures blood sugar regularly, and the insulin pump, which can be programmed by its user to deliver a predetermined amount of insulin.

Currently, people using these devices have to read their glucose monitor and then make a decision about how much insulin they need. And they must do this constantly -- potentially dozens of times per day, depending on their diets, activity levels and other factors. Sleep is a problematic time, since users cannot monitor their levels.

The artificial pancreas removes these burdens: the readings of the glucose monitor are passed to the insulin pump, and an onboard computer determines the appropriate insulin dose. Animas device also utilizes a proprietary algorithm that aims to predict the future course of a users blood sugar, allowing insulin levels to change well in advance of any complications.

While testing the device in Santa Barbara, volunteers were able to observe how the artificial pancreas took over the management of their blood sugar.

It was fascinating to see how the program thinks, said Kirk Martin, another volunteer. Im sitting there turning my life over to this machine, and you say, I hope its right. But you can see on the monitor that its right, so you acquiesce.

The results from the Animas trial, presented Monday at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Assn. in Philadelphia, were positive, though limited in scope. The researchers showed only that the device was able to keep the participants blood sugars within an acceptable range, without any safety risks, for 24 hours.

Swedish Study Falsely Blames Low-Carbohydrate, High-Fat Diets for High Cholesterol Levels

DENVER, June 12, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Atkins Nutritionals, Inc. today announced that a recently released epidemiology study published in Nutrition Journal has come to the mistaken conclusion that a low-carbohydrate diet, like the Atkins Diet, is to blame for rising cholesterol levels between 1986 and 2010 in a Swedish population. However, based on the study abstract, this population actually consumed a high-fat, high-carbohydrate diet, which is very different from the Atkins Diet.

Based on the Swedish study of food frequency questionnaires, during 2010 the population consumed a diet with carbohydrates making up 45.9 percent of calories and 39.9 percent of calories from fat. In contrast, with Atkins, in the early weight loss phases, only 10 percent of calories come from healthy carbohydrates, and the remaining calories come from a variety of protein choices, as well as healthy fats such as olive oil and avocado. Foods associated with the high fat intake in this Swedish study were "fats used for spreading on bread and cooking, dairy products, oil for salad dressing or cooking, various types of meats, and sausages, as main dishes or on sandwiches, pizza, deep fried potato chips, French fries, including corn chips and popcorn."

"This food intake is not reflective of the Atkins dietary program," said Colette Heimowitz, vice president of nutrition and education for Atkins Nutritionals, Inc. "The Swedish study is a case study of what happens when a population consumes high carbohydrate combined with high fat. In fact, BMI increased, as did markers for heart disease. Fat poses no risk when carbohydrate consumption is low enough to allow the body to burn fat for fuel. This has been demonstrated in clinical trials time and time again, consistently supporting the conclusion that a well-constructed Atkins Diet lowers risk factors for heart disease. What this study does showcase is that the Swedish researchers need to take a close look at the mounting evidence that the low-carbohydrate approach to weight loss and long-term weight maintenance is not only effective but also safe and beneficial to every clinical measure looked at to date."

Representatives from the Science Advisory Board for Atkins Nutritionals Inc. have weighed-in on the mistaken assumptions made by the study:

"This study does not take into account other variables or factors taking place in the Swedish demographic in this time period," said Dr. Stephen D. Phinney, PhD., MD. "For one, they do not take into consideration the effect of age on the population. The Swedish population is rapidly aging, and this is most notable in the northern part of the country where this study was done and I did not see where they corrected their data on weight or cholesterolfor change in mean age. And most importantly, anyone attempting to assess health risk by change in total cholesterol does not appreciate the science of the last 30 years. Particularly notable is the lack of information on serum HDL cholesterol and triglycerides."

"This study completely ignores a large body of literature that points to health-promoting effects of low carbohydrate diets. A well formulated low carbohydrate diet, like the Atkins Diet, has been shown in numerous studies to result in favorable effects on cholesterol, saturated fat levels in the body, and other cardio-metabolic markers, especially in individuals who have insulin resistance," said Dr. Jeff Volek, PhD., RD.

Over the past few decades, health researchers who have studied the Atkins approach have found that low-carbohydrate is a viable, safe, effective and sound alternative for those individuals who prefer this style of eating and dietary management, and especially those with metabolic syndrome. Health professionals are recognizing that one diet does not fit all types of individuals. The Atkins approach has consistently been found to warrant consideration in the global fight against obesity and the concomitant chronic diseases associated with it.

Washington State WR Marquess Wilson is only scratching the surface

The Breakdown

WR Marquess Wilson: Washington (6-4, 185)

What I like

ICONWilson certainly looks the part.

- Possesses excellent height for the position with a frame to grow into. - Runs well for his size. Showcases the ability to get up to speed quickly off the line and be a threat over the top. - Displays good body control and balance with the ball in his hands. Looks natural on the bubble screen creating in tight areas. - Understands how to come off the line low and use his wiggle to gain a step on corners vs. press coverage. - Uses his length well to knock defenders hands away off the line as well, gain inside leverage and create down the field. - Looks natural running inside vertical routes, can drop pad level and play with a corner in his back pocket. - Does a nice job boxing corners out and adjusting to the football. - Showcases a surprising burst to his game when trying to separate for a big guy and initially can create some space as a route runner. - Builds speed and once he can open up his gate he has the ability to separate vertically and track the football. - Showcases the natural bend/flexibility to mature as a route runner and be able to run sharply breaking routes.

What I didnt like

- Has to learn to come off the line from more of a traditional stance, too much weight is out over his chest in college and will struggle to beat press in NFL. - Needs to show better concentration catching the football, puts far too many throws on the ground that are catchable. - Will get caught looking for defenders or trying to run before securing the football over the middle of the field. - Tends to gear down before his breaks on comeback routes. Doesnt force opposing corners to routinely open up their hips and run before snapping out of his break. - Isnt the cleanest of receivers on sharply breaking routes, tends to drift in and out of his breaks and is more of a vertical route runner only at this stage. - Wants to simply outpace defenders to spots instead of setting corners up out of his breaks. - I didnt see a real killer instinct from him in either the run game or when asked to chase the football after an interception. - Isnt real physical and can be slowed off the line and down the field by stronger corners checking him into his routes. - Lacks ideal body control when asked to adjust on the fade, tends to drift away from the throw and will struggle to gather himself and attack the football quickly.

Overall

Marquess Wilson is a tall wide out with good size and has the ability to run and create vertically. Plus, I see enough short area quickness and flexibility to his game to make me think he can develop as a route runner.

However, hes raw at this stage and has a tendency to put the football on the ground and lose concentration. Therefore, it will be interesting to see how much he matures in the coming years. Nevertheless, hes a high upside guy who is only starting to scratch the surface of his potential as an NFL prospect.
