Veteran's MOVE! toward healthier living

Readmore: Local, Health, Move!, Move! Program, Veteran's Lose Weight, Veteran's Move! Program, Veteran's Diet, Veteran's Changing Diet

IRON MOUNTAIN -- The MOVE! Program is designed by the VA's National Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention.

The four-month program educates veterans on exercising, healthy food choices, and proper portions to lose weight and achieve an overall lifestyle change.

The purpose is to make sure we can have our veterans maintain a normal healthy weight and be healthier by losing weight, says health coordinator Brenda Reed. Weight loss can help with managing a lot of other chronic health conditions like diabetes, heart problems, and managing cholesterol, Brenda says.

Veterans meet once a month to discuss diet tips andstruggles and to check their weight loss progress. Roger Newhouse participated in the program for a year now and has lost 70 pounds. He says shedding the weight changed his life.

In addition to losing the weight when I first came here, I was taking 29 different medications.I probably took away over 25 because of my weight loss, says Roger. I just feel so much better. I have so much energy to do things.

He says it's a never-ending battle, but the group helps him keep moving forward. Now he only has 30 pounds left to lose to reach his overall weight loss goal of 100 pounds.

Any veterans interested in the program can contact their medical provider or call 1-800-215-8262 ext 32159.

Sugar Substitutes Can Lead to Weight Loss

Non-Sugar Sweeteners May Help Control Weight and Blood Sugar -- if You Don't Compensate

July 9, 2012 -- Substituting other sweeteners for sugars may help people lose weight and help people with diabetes control blood sugar, according to a new joint statement issued by the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association.

"When you use these non-nutritive sweeteners smartly, they will help you cut back on sugar and calories," says Christopher Gardner, PhD, who chaired the writing group for the joint statement.

The key word here is "smartly," says Gardner, associate professor of medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.

The benefits of the sweeteners only hold if people don't undo them. That happens when they slake their sugar craving with other sugary drinks or foods later in the day -- an all-too-common tendency among people who use artificial sweeteners.

The new scientific statement is published in the journal Circulation.

Americans eat too much sugar, the American Heart Association warned in 2009.

The AHA recommends that most women eat no more than 100 calories of added sugars a day and men no more than 150 calories a day. That is about 6 teaspoons for most women, 9 for most men. "Added" sugars means sugar not naturally present in raw vegetables, fruits, and grains. Any sweetened beverage or food adds sugar to the diet.

But the average American's daily intake of added sugars is about 22 teaspoons or about 355 calories, according to 2004 AHA data.

This finding led the AHA to recommend reducing added sugars in the diet. And that raised the question of whether alternative sweeteners might help.

Experts Disagree Over Benefits Of Alkaline Diet In Fighting Diseases

Posted: Jul. 9, 2012 | 12:29 a.m.

Gabe Mirkin trains three to six hours a day as a bike racer in Florida. His stamina is impressive for any age, but at 77 the retired physician and former teaching fellow at Johns Hopkins University definitely turns heads. Mirkin's key to health is a diet rich in many different-colored fruits and vegetables, he says. He also avoids red meat and opts for better lean proteins instead.

There are others who use this diet approach to achieve optimal health or even to battle diseases. Many know of Kris Carr's 2007 "Crazy Sexy Cancer," a film that follows the actress and photographer's journey after a 2003 diagnosis of stage-four epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, a rare cancer found in the liver and lungs' blood vessel linings.

After nine years with only the help of a plant-based diet, Carr appears to be going strong and has created a not-so-small wellness empire. At the root of her plant-based diet is the topic of pH balance. According to Carr and other medical professionals, acidic processed foods, grains and meats ravage many Americans' bodies. Carr, with the help of researchers and academics, puts her best foot forward to explain how a higher acidic diet should shift to a more alkaline diet with more raw fruits and vegetables to keep metabolic and other processes in high gear.

Fruits and vegetables, when burned through the metabolic process, leave an alkaline "ash," or film with a pH above 7 on a scale of 1 to 14; meats leave an acidic ash well below 7. But while Mirkin likely consumes a supposedly higher alkaline diet, he balks at the topic of pH balance.

"It's complete nonsense," he says.

The retired doctor, who wrote his first essay against pH balance more than two decades ago, argues that the body regulates its blood pH level at approximately 7.4, a slightly alkaline state that is needed in order to live. The doctor says the body's every chemical reaction is guided by enzymes that work in that same narrow pH range to maintain health, and the body's other systems such as the lungs and kidneys also do their part to filter out excess acid ultimately expelled as waste. It's an extremely efficient system that works to keep fluids slightly alkaline at all times, he says.

"My statement is that the foods exclaimed by acid-base theory are helpful but not because of acid-base. Buying products based on changing your pH is walking on very shaky ground," he adds.

JUST GOOD FOOD?

Mirkin says there are countless studies that show red meat's association with many types of cancers, and it's impossible to ignore the connection. However, chicken and fish are considered to be acidic meats, too, he notes, but they are less likely to be associated with disease. He says those that are promoting the diet often have products such as supplements or books to sell.

Guards need minimum level of fitness

A Christchurch security guard trainer says a minimum level of fitness should apply for all security guards.

Trainer Ron Stuart said he had been trying for years to get the wider security industry to recognise fitness levels for security guards.

His experience in the industry included 15 years working in regional management for a major security company and more than 20 years of training unemployed people to be security guards.

His courses included a fitness element, but industry training organisation Etito dropped a fitness requirement from its updated level 2 National Certificate in Security without consulting others in the industry, he said.

"A security guard is responsible for protecting property or possessions and preventing incidents or accidents - to be capable of doing this they need a personal level of fitness."

From last year, all bouncers, security guards and crowd controllers needed to have a licence or certificate of approval to operate.

At present, it is optional for security guards to complete a relevant qualification, but the Government has indicated training requirements will be needed in the future.

Stuart said the current national certificate was a good start for those looking to have a career in the security industry, but it did not address whether someone had the physical ability to do the job.

Fitness was important for security guards, and knowing a guard's fitness level could determine the type of work they were capable of, he said.

"I often have a chuckle at rugby matches ... the guards can have trouble standing for the game let alone stop a pitch runner."

ANYTIME FITNESS: Court sides with Kingston Board of Health

Anytime Fitness must operate in line with the towns regulation health clubs, a Plymouth Superior Court judge has ruled.

That decision will be appealed, according to Rob Kraus, attorney for Anytime Fitness owner Jake Pylant.

At issue is the towns requirement that a staff member trained in the use of an automatic external defibrillator must be on duty at health clubs in town during business hours, or 24 hours a day, seven days a week in the case of Anytime Fitness. The gym is located at 187 Summer St.

While he respects the judges decision that the towns bylaw is valid and enforceable, he disagrees, Kraus said. In challenging the towns bylaw, he said state law should apply.

State lawmakers created a law that provides for access to convenient, affordable fitness clubs like Anytime Fitness, he said. Its disappointing the health board saw fit to adopt a more stringent regulation.

Anytime Fitness and Pylant, a franchisee, sued the town in May 2011, claiming that the Board of Healths regulation was unenforceable because it conflicted with an act of the Legislature. State law says the AED requirement only applies when staff is on duty during business hours.

Associate Justice Robert Cosgrove disagreed that there was a conflict. In his decision he wrote, But no comparable inference fairly arises that the Legislature intended to prohibit a health board from imposing more extensive requirements; again, had the Legislature intended such a result, it simply could have said so.

Board of Health Chairman Joe Casna said he understands the boards decision poses a hardship for Pylant, but that it would be unsafe for a health club to be open without a staff member on duty who has been trained in the use of an AED.

At the end of the day, its a matter of public safety, he said. I think there should be staffing there under any circumstances.

Casna said he sympathizes with Pylant and hopes Pylant can adjust his business plan so it wont hurt him financially, but that circumstances dictate the business cannot continue as usual. He said its vital that someone with training is present, because AEDs can save lives.

Planet Fitness offers 'judgment-free zone'

WORCESTER Upon walking into Planet Fitness, Worcesters newest fitness center, members will not find bulky weight-lifters or intense triathlon trainers. The gym, whose motto is a judgment-free zone, instead promotes pizza nights and bagel mornings.

The Planet Fitness club, one of more than 550 in the United States, strives to create a fun, comfortable and noncompetitive environment for people while they exercise.

We want this gym to be inclusive, said Jonathan Epstein, co-owner of the club. We want our members to feel welcome. This gym targets the 90 percent of the population who dont have the time to exercise daily.

The new branch, which recently opened in Webster Square, includes more than 100 Cybex cardio machines and 20 televisions in the main training room. The 20,000-square-foot gym is larger than the average Planet Fitness facility. In addition, the club has weight lifting machines but, in keeping with the judgment-free zone, does not have dumbbells that weigh more than 75 pounds.

Planet Fitness also has a lunk alarm. If members feel that they are being judged in the gym they can set off a loud alarm that flashes and is intended to reprimand the offender. Lunks are proclaimed by Planet Fitness to be people who grunt as they lift weights, loudly drop weights or judge other members in the gym.

Planet Fitness is a great place for people to get started (exercising), Mr. Epstein said. The lunk alarm overcomes barriers that most people face while exercising.

Planet Fitness also features tanning booths and a full tanning salon in the back, as well as massage chairs, a 12-minute abdominal station and a 30-minute express circuit station.

The club is owned and operated by Core Development and Management, the largest Planet Fitness franchise group in Massachusetts. Its key directors include Mr. Epstein, Chief Executive Officer Brian Kablik and Chief Directing Officer William Whelan.

Planet Fitness was founded in 1992 in New Hampshire. It began franchising in 2003 and now has at least 2.3 million members in more than 250 locations. For the past five years it has been ranked as one of the fastest-growing private businesses in the United States.

Membership rates are $10 a month with no commitment. The club also offers a Planet Fitness Black Card for $19.99 a month that includes free guest privileges, unlimited tanning, use of the massage chairs and access to all Planet Fitness clubs in other locations.
