Avoid These Diet Mistakes

Who hasn't thrown their diet rules out the window on the weekend or gone crazy with a super-rich and gooey chocolate dessert? Of course it's fine to splurge every once in a while, but over time these seemingly minor violationsin addition to some other not-so-small diet sinscan add up to a big number on your scale.

To the rescue: our guide to the most common diet mistakes that even smart women makeand straightforward advice on how to fix them.

1. Caution: Gulping down food

If you make a habit of rushing through meals, you could end up eating more than you intend toor even realize. Your brain takes at least 15 minutes to register fullness, so if you shovel food into your mouth at a frantic pace, your stomach could become overstuffed before you actually know you've had enough.

The fix: Make a conscious effort to savor the flavor. Try to dedicate more chews to every mouthful. You can also place your fork on your plate between bites and pick it up again only after you've swallowed. This will double the time it takes to eat. The payoff: In a recent study from the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, women were told to eat a pasta dish slowly by pausing between bites and chewing each mouthful 15 to 20 times. As a result they consumed about 70 fewer calories during the meal than when they consumed the same dish at a fast pace. __________________________________________________

New fitness center’s machines customize, monitor workouts

By Jacob Kanclerz

The Columbus Dispatch Thursday July 19, 2012 6:49 AM

Technology is in our phones, homes and cars. Now its in your gym, telling you how to work out, how well you work out and whether youre making progress.

Koko FitClub, a fitness franchise focused on a technology-assisted workout, opened its first location in Ohio near Powell on July 9.

Koko doesnt have dumbbells, mats or fitness balls, but five machines known as smart trainers that set customized workouts for people. The smart-trainer machines, which are capable of 93 exercises, also calculate the effectiveness of the workout and track the participants overall progress.

At most gyms, people dont have those resources, said Brad Root, co-owner of the local Koko.

They dont know what to do, they dont know how to do it, they really have a hard time measuring any type of success or gains theyre getting, said Root, who runs the gym with his wife, Kathleen. We solve every one of those issues.

Not everyone is on board with the automated concept. It removes most of the human element from personal training, which personal trainer Scott Hayes said might not be safe, particularly for people with specific orthopedic concerns.

We look at it from a medical point of view, Hayes said, who runs Columbus Fitness Consultants and Exercise Equipment Experts and has been a personal trainer since 1994. It would be like going to your doctor and having it be automated. Its trying to replace a professional.

But Koko is capitalizing on the larger trend of technology use in the fitness industry, said Bryan ORourke, a New Orleans-based fitness-industry expert who is involved in several fitness-related enterprises. Companies such as Snap Fitness and Anytime Fitness, both of which have locations in central Ohio, are adapting technology to allow members to track progress online or lead fitness classes.

Doctor K: Determine calorie total to drop weight – Thu, 19 Jul 2012 PST

July 19, 2012 in Features, Health

Anthony L. Komaroff Universal Uclick

DEAR DOCTOR K: Im trying to lose weight. How can I figure out how many calories I should be eating everyday?

DEAR READER: Since your weight is influenced both by the number of calories you eat and by the number of calories you burn during your daily activities, lets assume that your daily activities wontchange.

To figure out how many calories you should consume each day to lose weight, you first need to know how many calories you need to maintain your current weight. The math issimple.

First, multiply your current weight by 15. This calculation tells you the number of calories per day you need to maintain your current weight (weight-maintenancecalories).

Lets say you weigh 155 pounds. If you multiply 155 by 15, you get 2,325, which is your weight-maintenance calorie total. To lose weight, youll need to reduce your daily calories belowthat.

To lose 1 to 2 pounds a week a rate that experts consider safe you should consume 500 to 1,000 fewer calories per day than your total weight-maintenance calories. That means you need to eat between 1,325 calories per day (2,325 less 1,000) to 1,825 calories per day (2,325 less500).

However, dont consume fewer than 1,200 calories per day if youre a woman or fewer than 1,500 calories per day if youre a man, except under the supervision of your doctor. Eating too few calories can endanger your health by depriving you of needednutrients.

Vegans tout their diet

Some children are picky eaters, some are obese and some are both. But none of Onile Ngozi's three children falls into those categories.

Ngozi, 45, of St. Louis, became a vegan 18 years ago and has raised her children, ages, 7, 17 and 19, on a vegan diet.

Vegetarians eliminate meat, poultry and fish from their diet but eat eggs and dairy products. Vegans go a step further. Their diets are plant-based and don't allow for dairy, eggs or any animal products.

Yes, Ngozi admits, some people think she's crazy.

"They say, 'What do you mean you're not feeding your children any meat? What do you mean you're not giving them dairy? They need iron. They need protein.' They're amazed that they're so healthy, active and intelligent. And they're amazed that they want food that's good for them."

Earlier this year, the children's book "Vegan is Love: Having Heart and Taking Action," by Ruby Roth, a vegan mother, hit store shelves. Reaction to it was mixed. Many meat-eaters found it preachy and graphic from an animal rights standpoint. And some health experts worried that children eating such a diet wouldn't get proper nutrition.

Nicole German, a dietitian/blogger in Atlanta, wrote that "it could easily scare a young child into eating vegan, and, without proper guidance, that child could become malnourished."

Vegans say the opposite is true.

Lee Ferrenbach, a sales associate at Golden Grocer Natural Foods in the Central West End and a vegan, believes babies prefer a vegan diet.

"If you put meat and fruit in front of a baby, they'll choose the fruit," he says.
