Tour Report: Fitness: Strengthen to help coiling

By Sean Cochran, Golf Fitness

Coiling can be described as the resistance created from the turning of the upper body to a greater degree than the lower body in the backswing. The coiling action creates an immense amount of elastic energy which can be translated into power during the downswing. This action is often referred to as the X-factor.

In order to create an X-factor a number of physical components are required. A stable lower body is needed. This creates the platform by which the upper body rotates. Mobility in the hips and flexibility in segments of the upper body are a requirement for the rotational components of the X-factor. Generally speaking the more stable the lower body and the greater flexibility in the upper body the more coiling the golfer can create.

Golf fitness training and exercises can assist in developing these physical components necessary for the coiling action of the golf swing. Dissecting the requirements of this action the development of lower body strength, hip mobility, and upper body flexibility will greatly enhance the ability to create an X-factor.

Looking at golf fitness exercises conducive to developing these physical components a Goblet Squat for the lower body strength/stability, Spiders to develop dynamic hip mobility, and Kneeling Club Rotations to focus on upper body flexibility could very much enhance the coiling action in the golf swing.

Golf Fitness Exercises:

Goblet Squat: (Lower body strength/stability) Grasp a dumbbell with both hands in front the chest. Rest the dumbbell in the palms of both hands, and elbows pointing down. Place the feet slightly wider than shoulder width apart, toes pointed outward at 45 degrees, and heels on the floor. Maintain an upright torso with the eyes looking forward, and arms extended straight.

Slowly lower the hips while keeping the torso upright by bending the knees. Continue to squat downward until the thighs are parallel to the floor. Pause for one second, return to the starting position of the exercise, and repeat for 8-15 repetitions.

Spiders: (Hip mobility) Position the body in a standard push-up position, back flat, hands shoulder width apart, and eyes looking down.

Begin by lifting your left foot and placing it outside the left hand. Slowly attempt to press your left forearm down towards the floor, keeping your left hand in place. Lower your forearm as low to the floor as possible, and hold for one second. Return to the starting position of the exercise and repeat with your right hand and foot. Perform 10-15 repetitions.

American Council On Exercise Helps Fitness Seekers Go For The Gold With Olympics-Inspired Workouts

SAN DIEGO, June 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --In anticipation of the upcoming Olympic Games, American Council on Exercise (ACE) has developed four week-long workouts inspired by popular events to help Americans train like the athletes who will be competing in London this summer. As the public follows the excitement on TV, they can also get fit with gymnastics, track and field, swimming and cycling-inspired exercise programs.

The gymnastics and track and field workouts were developed in partnership with Olympic gold medalists Dominique Dawes and Allyson Felix. Both are members of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition (PCFSN), and Dawes is a co-chair of the organization.

"The Olympic Games showcase the world's finest and best trained athletes, people who dedicate their lives to maintaining healthy lifestyles so they can be at the top of their sport," said ACE Chief Science Officer Dr. Cedric X. Bryant. "Using this international event as an inspiration, ACE has developed these workouts to show Americans how they too can train like their favorite Olympians. It's all part of our continuing effort to help people live their most fit lives."

ACE fitness experts evaluated the four sports and developed exercises based on the attributes world-class competitors require, including balance, agility, strength and coordination. ACE then tailored the workouts to be accessible to fitness enthusiasts at any ability level. Each plan includes a warm up, cool down and four different exercise routines to be completed in a week, with rest days in between. A new workout will be posted each week leading up to the Games at ACE Get Fit Workouts and will include instructional videos and photos to help demonstrate how to properly perform the exercise that make up each of the workouts.

A member of the gold medal-winning "Magnificent Seven" in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Dawes now dedicates her time to working with the PCFSN on various healthy living initiatives. She is also a supporter of the fitness component of Joining Forces, in which ACE and the PCFSN have partnered to unite fitness professionals around the nation to offer one million hours of fitness training services at no cost to family members of actively deployed military reservists and National Guard members.

According to Dawes, "Gymnastics is the ultimate combination of strength, balance and coordination. You get out of the training what you put in, which means you get to choose your own success."

Allyson Felix, a gold medalist sprinter, helped in the development of the track and field workout. Felix is currently participating in the Olympic trials. "Training for track and field is all about finding the motivation to work hard," she said. "Whatever your specific event, working on your strength is going to provide the foundation for your success."

Dr. Ronald Sha comments: FDA clears first new weight-loss pill in 13 years

By: Matthew Perrone | Associated Press, NBC-17 Published: June 27, 2012 Updated: June 27, 2012 - 4:36 PM

The Food and Drug Administration has approved Arena Pharmaceutical's anti-obesity pill Belviq, the first new prescription drug for long-term weightloss to enter the U.S. market in over a decade.

Despite only achieving modest weightloss in clinical studies, the drug appeared safe enough to win the FDA's endorsement, amid calls from doctors for new weight-loss treatments.

The agency cleared the pill Wednesday for adults who are obese or are overweight with at least one medical complication, such as diabetes or high cholesterol.

The FDA denied approval for Arena's drug in 2010 after scientists raised concerns about tumors that developed in animals studied with the drug. The company resubmitted the drug with additional data earlier this year, and the FDA said there was little risk of tumors in humans.

Dr. Ronald Sha, medical director at Duke Diet and Fitness Center, said the FDA sets the bar high, which should hopefully mean the drug is safe.

The FDA realizes that as soon as theres a weight loss medicine approved, two-thirds of American adults are going to want to take it and the FDA realizes that if only a tiny fraction of a percentage of people have side effects, thats thousands of people who have side effects," he said

Still, he's not ready to prescribe it. He wants to wait a few months after it's on the market before allowing his patients to take it.

"There have been a large number of weight loss medicines approved in this country that have subsequently been taken off the market after theyve been found to have unpleasant side effects, so I think itd be wise to just wait and see if its completely safe," he said.

"The approval of this drug, used responsibly in combination with a healthy diet and lifestyle, provides a treatment option for Americans who are obese or are overweight and have at least one weight-related comorbid condition," said FDA's drug center director, Dr. Janet Woodcock, in a statement.

The fad-free management diet

(MoneyWatch) COMMENTARY It's big news and it's all over the internet: A study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association suggests that a diet based on healthy carbohydrates -- similar to a Mediterranean diet of fish, vegetables, fruit, nuts, beans, whole grains and healthy fats like olive oil -- is better for you than a low-fat or low-carb diet.

And this is news? We've known this for decades. It's how I've eaten for as far back as I can remember. It's how nearly all the healthy people I know eat.

Yes, I know, I'm forgetting about the Atkins Diet, South Beach Diet, Low-Fat Diet, Low-Carb Diet, Beverly Hills Diet, Hollywood Diet, Acai Berry Diet, and all those other diet fads that come and go because everyone wants a quick fix these days.

The only problem is quick fixes and fad diets don't work. Common sense works. It's the same thing with leadership, management, your career. It's exactly the same. The way to achieve a lasting competitive advantage, a high-performance organization, a successful business, or a fulfilling career, is through common sense and hard work - not fads and silver bullets.

Meanwhile, we're bombarded with book after book, blog after blog, website after website, and article after article about the one, seven or 10 things that will magically change your career or your company, make all the bad stuff go away and make everything wonderful.

Doesn't that sound remarkably like diets that promise to make your pounds just effortlessly melt away and leave you looking like someone from People magazine's Most Beautiful list?

7 things great employees do You won't achieve the American Dream by dreaming Trendy fads won't help your career

Here's an idea: Instead of the latest management fad; instead of all the Utopian platitudes and parables about leadership; instead of the endless obsessing over productivity, time management, employee engagement, emotional intelligence, other people's habits, personal branding, positive thinking, burnout, Gen X, Gen Y, Gen Z or how to be like Steve Jobs; why not try a little common sense for a change.

Here's the leadership, management and career equivalent of that old Mediterranean diet we've all known about forever. Let's just call it the Fad-Free Management Diet: 10 ingredients to business health and career success. Best of all, it's fad-free.

- Make smart decisions based on real-world experience, logical reasoning and solid ideas that pass the laugh test.

Jackson County UW-Extension has rich history over 78 years

If farmers are looking for information and trends on farming, UW-Extension is there.

If families are in search of resources to bolster their relationships, UW-Extension is there.

If residents are in need of resources for nutritious diets, UW-Extension is there.

And if parents are looking for positive activities for their children 4-H, after-school or otherwise UW-Extension is there.

Wisconsin Cooperative Extension is celebrating its centennial anniversary this year a milestone that marks 100 years of providing university-based resources to all Wisconsin residents regardless of educational achievement.

In Jackson County, UW-Extension is marking 78 years as a county-wide resource that started in 1934 with one agent and has evolved into an operation with four agents and countless programs.

(Extensions) goal is to bring the research and resources of the university out to every county in the state, said Jackson County family living agent Luane Meyer, whos worked at the local office since 1990. What we want to do ... is to bring the tools and the information to individuals and families so that they have those tools to make decisions.

Wisconsin Cooperative Extension began in 1912 with the hire of its first county agent E.L. Luther in Oneida County. Two years later, U.S. Congress passed the Smith-Lever Act, which created Cooperative Extension Services and provided federal funds for extension activities in states.

The states 4-H program was established the same year, and Jackson Countys UW-Extension office began its work in 1934 with the hiring of M.R. Schuler as its first agriculture agent. Walter Bean began as a joint agriculture and 4-H agent two years later, home economist Lucille Herbert Hendrickson was hired 10 years later and additional staff and programs have been added in the following years.

Jackson Countys office now has Meyer, agriculture agent Trisha Wagner, 4-H youth development agent Monica Lobenstein, state nutrition educator Denise Lahodik, staff from federal volunteer programs and other support staff. It is funded in part through federal, state and county dollars, with the county providing office space and support staff.

Jessica Simpson: Weight Watchers Hasn't Pressured Me to Lose Weight

Chill out, y'all!

Jessica Simpson famously became a mom for the first time May 1, when she welcomed daughter Maxwell Drew Johnson. And even before that happy day, fans have had a big question on their mind: How quickly would Simpson, 31, drop her baby weight?

PHOTOS: Jessica's bump watch

After all, the singer and fashion mogul penned a multi-million dollar deal with Weight Watchers to slim down, and has been spotted over the past month hitting a private L.A.gym with celeb trainer Harley Pasternak. But on Wednesday, Simpson cleared the air via Twitter.

"Just so everyone knows . . . Weight Watchers hasn't put ANY pressure on me!" wrote Simpson, engaged to Maxwell's dad, Eric Johnson since fall 2010. "I'm trying to be as healthy as I can be for myself and I feel great."

PHOTOS: Awesome post-baby bods

Said Weight Watchers in its initial announcement of Simpson as their new ambassador for North America: "We're thrilled that Jessica Simpson has chosen to join Weight Watchers to adopt a healthier lifestyle and inspire others to do the same. Her talent, resilience and positive outlook already make her a great role model, and by deciding to trade in yo-yo dieting for a healthier lifestyle, we know she will inspire many women to join her."

PHOTOS: Jessica's weight struggles in the past

The weight loss company continued: "From the point when we started speaking with Jessica before she became pregnant, to now when she's had baby Maxwell, Jessica has made clear her commitment to establishing a healthier lifestyle for herself and her family. We look forward to supporting Jessica as she embarks on this next chapter in her life."
