Scientists told how to lose weight with the brain – The Times Hub

A group of scientists conducted a series of studies to determine the influence of brain on body weight of a person. They found out a new way of losing weight.

According to the lead author of a scientific work load of the brain, for example, a complex task, it will consume roughly 30-40% more energy than conventional thinking. Specialist thinks it can help people with obesity lose weight. So, regular exercise in active mental activity can burn up to six thousand calories at a time, which is equal to several kilograms. He got her started on the Sirtfood diet, which involved drinking three green juices and one meal per day for three days a week and sticking to a strick 1,200 calories per day for the rest of the week. Aravinnd Iyer talks about his weight loss plan, life during the lockdown and future projects – Times of India

Aravinnd, who is currently in Dubai, is making the most of the lockdown by focusing on losing weight, honing his cooking skills and working on new things including new scripts. Aravinnd tells us more...1.There have been many stories created during all the time people have had during this lockdown. But you have made yourself the story. Tell us about it. I reached Dubai before the lockdown and didn't realise the gravity of the situation back then. So, I started cooking and eating (laughs) and I still do, but I went overboard. I put on a lot of weight, so I thought I need to do something about it. I always keep reading a lot of about fitness, nutrition and the science behind it. I have applied this to my earlier projects and I can do it again. So, that's how it all began.

2. Out of the dishes you have cooked so far, which ones do you rate as your best creations so far?I liked the Saffron Red Pepper Sauce Paneer, the Green Curry that I made and the Amritsari Pindi Chole.

3. Considering your tryst with cooking, how tough has it been to stick to your weight loss plan?Its all in the mind. I'm not going on any fancy diet, I'm just following good nutrition and the science behind it. I ensure that I consume the necessary calories needed. I eat dal, rice and eggs even now but in the required quantities and also exercise as much as I need to.

5. What has been the kind of response you have got from fans. Have they shared their weight loss journey/ challenges too?The response has been good. A lot of people connected to my post and said that were facing something similar, whether they have been not able to lose weight. A lot of people have messaged, but I am not trying to tell people that they should be doing this or that.

6. What are you going to miss most about being under lockdown?To be honest, I'm dying to be on a film set. But, this lockdown has given me a lot of time. I had a list of things to do and the website was a part of that list. I have been putting up my blogs on that. In the past couple of weeks, I have been reading scientific papers on nutrition and even gave an exam as well on the same. As of now, I am taking up a course on nutritional science.

7. How long do you think the film industry will take to make up for the lost time and the lost revenue?Given the ambiguity of the situation, I don't know what the solution is going to be. I'm not sure if people will make content only for OTT platforms, I don't think that may work also. However, one of the solutions, which I saw here in Dubai was to have drive-in theatres. I wish something like that comes up in Bengaluru. People are coming up with innovative ways. I was watching Pawan Kumar's videos on what he thinks the near future will be or how the industry can sustain, which I really enjoyed.

8. How different do you feel things will be post lockdown?My information is purely based on what I read in the Bangalore Times or on the internet. The new normal that seems to be doing the rounds is that work from home may be permanent for many people. It's about finding a balance. There will be a lot of changes but I do hope that people come back to theatre to watch films because that is an experience or go to a stadium to watch cricket matches. I don't know how it will be but lets see.

New research confirms straw could be valuable weapon in fight against equine obesity – Horse & Hound

Replacing some hay with straw could be an important weapon in the fight against equine obesity, a new study has shown.

Redwings Horse Sanctuary and researchers at the University of Edinburgh hope their study, published in leading journal Veterinary Record, will help owners manage horses weight in winter, and so reduce the risk of weight-related welfare issues.

In a trial at Redwings, 40 overweight native-breed equids living out were divided into two groups: group A was fed 50% hay and 50% straw, while group B was fed solely hay. All were unrugged and had no extra exercise.

As the UKs largest horse sanctuary, Redwings cares for a large population of native ponies, said a charity spokesman. Their diets are often supplemented with hay during the winter when the grass is poor, but the charitys vets were concerned that some ponies were gaining weight, which was putting them at a higher risk of laminitis in the spring and summer.

They decided to team up with researchers at the University of Edinburgh to see if they could come up with a way to safely encourage weight loss in these ponies over the winter, so when they started to enjoy the spring grass, the additional weight they naturally gain wouldnt have such an impact on their hormones.

The ponies given 50% straw lost an average of 27kg between December 2018 and March 2019, while of the 15 fed just hay, only three lost weight and the rest gained it, putting on an average of 6kg. The weight changes were classed as statistically significant.

Roxane Kirton, who undertook the study while working as a welfare vet at Redwings, said: This was a significant result for Redwings, and will hopefully be a useful study for all owners of native ponies, as we had previously found it very difficult to help this particular group lose weight.

With such a large horse population to care for, we cant and dont want to put every pony on a crash diet. Restricting food has such an impact on a horses behaviour and welfare, so we were keen to look at more creative, long-term management options. When discussing human obesity, we often talk about making sustainable lifestyle changes and it shouldnt be any different for horses.

There were no incidents of colic reported in either group during the research period.

Ruth Morgan, co-author of the study and researcher at the University of Edinburgh, added: Straw is much lower in calories than hay and it takes horses longer to eat it as it is less digestible. Both these features are great, for weight loss and for the welfare of the horses, who like to eat for up to 20 hours a day.

Weve all watched horses scoff all their hay allowance in a short period of time and then stand watching us by the gate. Straw occupies the horses for much longer but without increasing their calorie intake. We would, however, warn owners to make sure their ponies teeth are in good shape before introducing straw as it does take more chewing this will also reduce the risk of colic. We hope the success of the trial means this research will go on to help even more ponies.

How a carer lost six stone and conquered her demons – Cambridgeshire Live

A size 24 carer who battled with weight issues for years was so determined to be fit at 40 that she shed six stone, conquered her food demons and landed a job as a weight loss coach.

Amy Rowlands, now 41, says her confidence "hit rock bottom" and decided things had to change.

Amy, of Grimsby, Lincolnshire, managed to drop five dress sizes in seven months after joining a WW slimming group and even landed a job helping other dieters to lose weight.

A carer for her partner Neil Armstrong, 44, who has a long-term illness, she was unhappy with her weight as she approached her 40th birthday.

Now at 5ft 9in, weighing 13st 4lb and wearing a size 14, Amy, who has four stepchildren said: When I reached 19-and-a-half stone, I stopped caring and didnt look after myself.

I would never look in the mirror and my confidence was at rock bottom.

I put my life on hold. I would say to myself, Well Ill go for a new job when I lose weight.

Amy continued: I used to sing in a band and I stopped that, but told myself Id do it again after Id lost weight.

I would bury my head in the sand. People around me would gently try and tell me I should lose weight, but I would just brush it off.

Amys unhealthy relationship with food started when she was aged just 12 and gained some puppy fat prompting her to try and lose weight and leading to a two year battle with the disease anorexia nervosa, starting when she was 13.

My weight problems spiralled out of control and I would go from one extreme to another, she recalled.

I weighed five stone, and after being admitted into a special unit for teenagers, that helped me get sorted.

After having anorexia, I went the other way and gained more and more weight.

She said: Then, in my 20s, I managed to lose seven stone through dieting.

But I put it back on again, and in my 30s went up to more than 20 stone losing nine stone again through dieting, before putting it all back on.

It would never stay off. Life would get in the way and I would pile the pounds back on. I would be in denial about how big I was getting and my weight just spiralled out of control.

Eating calorie-laden food like pizza, as well as snacking on chocolate and crisps, with scant regard for portion control, did not help.

Amy said: I would eat six biscuits as a mid-morning snack and a family sized bag of kettle chips in the evening after dinner.

I also used to drink a bottle of wine a night.

With a body mass index (BMI) used to gauge a healthy weight of 40.4, compared to the NHS recommended range of between 18.5 and 24.9, Amy was classed as obese.

But as her 30s drew to a close, weighing 19-and-a-half stone and wearing a dress size 24, she was determined not to be fat at 40.

And when her partner spent a month in hospital with a chest infection, it served as a real wake-up call, forcing Amy to look closely at her own health.

As soon as he was discharged, I thought, Im not putting it off anymore. I have to sort myself out. It was a wake-up call for me, she said.

I joined WW and started to reduce my calories using the points-based system. It was about changing my lifestyle. Im an all or nothing person so took it very seriously.

I started to lose weight quite quickly about five or six pounds in the first week, which spurred me on.

She added: I felt in control of something, because I could see the results from the changes Id made.

Within seven or eight months I looked and felt like a different person. It was amazing.

By January this year Id lost 6st 3lb and now weigh 13st 4lb and wear a size 14. Im hoping to get to my goal weight of 10st 7lb by the end of the summer.

As an added incentive, Amy put a pound in a jar for every pound in weight she lost, meaning she could soon treat herself to a brand new wardrobe.

When youre bigger you dress for your size rather than your taste or style, but when youre smaller you dress for yourself, she said.

My confidence has really grown. I can look in the mirror with pride.

I enjoy getting dressed up and going out when, before I lost weight, I would make an excuse not to go out, Amy explained.

Best of all, losing weight has given Amy a marvellous new work opportunity.

She said: Id been caring for my partner full-time, but I think I was also using that as an excuse, because I didnt have the confidence to go out to work.

Amy added: In the New Year, my WW coach asked if Id ever thought about becoming a coach myself, so I did as I really wanted to share my story and encourage others.

I find it really rewarding and I know it makes such a difference when youre being coached by someone who has been through the same thing.

Now Amy sticks to healthy meals, eating porridge for breakfast and chicken or fish for dinner, as well as working out three times a week.

I have an exercise machine at home, she said. I also have a fitness hula hoop and will do home workouts three times a week, as well as taking our Golden Labrador dog Whammo for a walk.

Now I want other people to know that whatever has happened, they can change, too.

Today I have a bounce in my step. Before losing weight, I felt so sluggish, but Ive got loads of energy now.

She said: I dont think you realise how much that extra weight impacts on your life until you lose it.

I used to wear a coat 12 months of the year, just to cover up my body, but not anymore.

I cant wait to wear shorts in the summer even if its just to go in the garden.

Deepak Chopra on grieving the loss of our pre-quarantine lives – KCRW

If spending your days in quarantine has allowed you to adopt a simpler life-style and catch up on sleep you may be onto a good thing. Deepak Chopra, renowned wellness expert and author most recently of Metahuman: Unleashing your infinite potential explains how adapting to a life in quarantine offers a unique opportunity to find equilibrium with the ecosystem that sustains us. But, according to Chopra, dont be surprised if youre feeling a sense of grief over your pre-quarantine life.

The following interview has been abbreviated and edited for clarity.

So many lives have been impacted by this pandemic, whats your perspective on this, and what's been going through your mind in the last couple of months.

Deepak Chopra: When I was growing up as a little kid in India, my father used to tell me stories about the Holocaust: the atomic bomb, the Second World War and about the great suffering that occurred when I was born when India and Pakistan split up. There were mass migrations and literally millions of people died. My grandfather used to tell me about the Great Depression and the First World War, and the suffering that happened in his generation. So historically in every generation, there has been something that has caused a global existential anxiety, suffering and even the fear of death. So this is not a unique moment in history; its the recycling of human experience and also the recycling, in my opinion, of our taking existence for granted.

What would you say is the underlying emotion were feeling right now?

Chopra: Right now were forced to find meaning in our existence. As a physician, Ive seen this. Whenever there is loss of a way of living, or any kind of loss, people go through grief. This is what is happening right now. Ive seen people go through the stages of grief in emergency rooms when theyre going through the throws of a heart attack. Ive seen them go through all the stages of grief, and then suddenly they find acceptance. Right now were in a stage between frustration, resignation and acceptance. Now we need to discover the meaning. What would happen if we didnt take our existence for granted? What if we were conscious of our mortality right from the start? Then we would live a different life.

One poet you love is the Indian poet, Tagore. You often use this quote of his; that I exist, is a perpetual surprise. Explain its significance to you at this time.

Chopra: I think if you're not perpetually surprised by your existence, your humanity is incomplete. To be human is to have a story about existence. And we have had this very, very biased story about existence in that it's all about us, when in fact life, is an ecosystem, every biological organism is an ecosystem. Even your genetic code is an ecosystem. Every biological organism is an ecosystem of bacteria or viruses or fungi of all other lifeforms.

In fact, there are two hundred times more genes in your body that are not human, that are derived from bacteria, fungi, viruses of all kinds. And every species, by the way, in one way or another, finds equilibrium with its environment. There are only two species on the planet that don't find equilibrium with their environment. One is viruses and the other is humans.

The practice of yoga is very important to you. Im speaking to you from Santa Barabara, a place where theres a yoga studio on every corner. Is there an over commodification of yoga and is the potency of mind and body healing weakened by a desire to have better abs?

Chopra: The commoditization of yoga and meditation or all these integrative techniques is actually the only way that people will ultimately find the meaning of existence. That's how the West works. Better commodify spiritual materialism, than commodify the sale of mechanized death and nuclear weapons and biological warfare or all the other things we commercialize like cigarettes, alcohol and any other activity that is detrimental. So what is wrong with commodification of spiritual materialism? It doesn't matter. People start yoga because they want to give up smoking, they want better abs, they want to lose weight, they want to look better. Nevermind. It's all right. Sooner or later, they'll bump into themselves.

During the recession, just before Airbnb was founded in 2008, searches for the keyword "mortgage"were beginning to drop, and the number of real estate, rental and leasing contractors was increasing by almosthalf a million. The share of theU.S workforcein the gig economy as a whole rose from 10.1% to 15.8% in 2015. People were looking for ways to reduce their costs, and earn more anyway they could.

Airbnb, and many other examples that fueled desire for alternative income in 2008 and 2009, were born from loss we lost533,000 jobsin 2008, the biggest drop since 1974.

The desire for alternative work arrangements stuck. As we came out of the great recession, the number of people doing alternative work rose byover 3%.

Back to 2020. After the coronavirus fades from the public mindset, what might be the next "gig economy" born from this recession, what is going to be the next AirBnb, or Uber?

Looking at a variety of data sources shows these as the categories will be ripe for startup innovation.

The combination of empty grocery store aisles and springtime has driven many people to garden and raise livestock, increasingself-sustainability.

Businesses selling the materials to support them are thriving. Home Depot'sshares are up 4.21%, and keyword searches for 'how to snake a toilet' and 'home garden' are both on the rise.

The entire home and garden category has seen a 140% increase in page views in the last month. Consumers are specifically interested in gardening and plumbing, which has seen an 245% increase.

Plumbing is an entirely new topic we've seen emerge in the last month. As toilet paper shortages forced some to use alternatives, plumbers have been busy snaking toiletsbut many consumers are simply learning how to do soon their own.

Perhaps a new marketplace of local service providers, a "Seamless" of plumbers will be born, and consumers will be a "click away" from getting someone to come and fix their plumbing. Marketplaces like TaskRabbit, Handy and Thumbtack will thrive, and new players will emerge.

Lockdown has been an opportunity for animal shelters, who haveurged people to adoptwhile homeand it's working. New Yorkers have adopted10x more petsthan usual and Los Angeles has seen a 70% increase in adoptions from shelters. In fact, shares of Chewy, a popular pet marketplace, are up 7%.

Over the past month, we've seen a 50% increase in pageviews related to pets.

We'll start to see a whole new host of pet-related businessesfrom the basics of food, toys and grooming, to mainstream TV channels for dogs likedogtv.com, more dedicated Netflix original shows for pets to keep them entertained, a proliferation of homemade meal services for cats and dogs like NomNom, virtual dog training courses, and tools to communicate with your pet like Hunger For Words.

Consumers are getting more comfortable with performing their own haircare and skincare routines.

At home beauty and wellness alternatives are currently experiencingdouble digit growth, a trend that we'll see impact the beauty industry permanently. It's not an entirely female phenomenon. Hair clipper sales havesoared 200%and more and more men are more likely to shave their heads in quarantine.

Page views related to haircare and skincare products DIY home kits has increasedwe've seen 36% and 1.7% increases respectively.

Companies providing not only the beauty products themselves, but also those providing custom training services, communities and more, will thrive. Perhaps beauty companies will offer VR filters people can swipe through at home like those offered by Pinterest and others. Once consumers like what they see, companies will then supply products to make them look like the filter.

This may be obviousvideo games and board games are providing all types of people with a welcome escape in lockdown. The Nintendo Switch isflying off the shelves, and the company currently can't make enough game consoles to meet the demand. This is due in part to one of their new releases, Animal Crossing, which has drawn the attention of the masses from across the globe.

In fact, as many people turn to safe, at-home entertainment, the U.S, has spent $1.597 billion on gaming hardwarea blockbuster amountsince the great recession, when we spent over $1.8 billion on hardware.

Our enthusiasm for gaming has been reflected on the open web. We've seen a 145% increase in gaming page views on publisher sites.

There's a huge opportunity for people to connect through video gamesit could be the sports' world next frontier, as eSports are currentlyoutperformingtheir goals. Games that include world building scenarios, the ability to socialize and incorporate exercise will thrive post-pandemic.

Most of the health-related news cycle revolves around obesity in relation to coronavirus deaths, but also, educational content on how to not lose weight in lockdown. Searches for 'weight loss' have steadily increased the more time we've spent in quarantine, and the more fitness and health apps we download. According to Statista, we downloaded over2.6 million home workout, no equipment appsin March of this year.

Staying healthy sustainably, and while sedentary, is a challenge. But some companies are starting to figure it out. Blue Apron recentlymade a comebackas more and more people look to learn to cook healthy, and Peloton stock is up 4% in the last month.

We've seen a huge spike in searches related to weight loss since the global pandemic began.

Now stuck at home, we're now more aware of our fitness, which may build habits that stick around. With so many healthy food, fitness and exercise options available, there's an opportunity here for aggregation of the market.

Just like we saw streaming services aggregate to places like Roku and Apple TV, fitness and food aggregation will be next. Physical gyms might also thrive later, to meet the new demand.

The news cycle is a direct reflection of what's grabbing consumer attention in real-time. Successful businesses will heed it's advice and use it to "look outside" in times of crises, but also how to "look inside" effectively to determine where to save costs and make responsible business choices.

There is not enough content that speaks about why the opportunity in all of this for existing companies, and new companies that will be born now and be with us forever. For the next Airbnb of healthcare, of fitness, of home improvement, lookoutside.

The creator of the hashtags, Sam Hlonyana, has had his own weight strugglesand admits he tried unrealistic and unsustainable methods to lose weight in thepast.
