Kildare mum of three, Claudia Murray, transforms her life and lands new career after five stone weight loss – RSVP Live

24 year old Claudia Murray, had tried to lose weight several times over the years, trying everything from weight loss shakes, to all the fad diets under the sun but to no avail.

I would lose a few pounds, but of course as soon as I stopped, Id just gain it all back she admits.

However, it was after just six weeks after the birth of her youngest son, now a year old, she knew enough was enough.

Weighing over 17 stone, the young mum who also has twin four year old daughters, admits that her weight had got so bad, her little girls eventually stopped asking her to play with them, knowing all too well what the answer would be.

I was constantly on the couch just eating and it was really affecting the kids she says.

It was heartbreaking to have to tell them no all the time but anytime I would try to get up to do anything I was left out of breath.

I couldnt run around with them, I coundt get on the trampoline with them and eventually I noticed they had stopped asking me.

They had obviously realised there was no point and that really gave me a wake up call that I needed to get my ass in gear and do something about it.

In fact things had gotten so bad, Claudia admits she had to stop doing her weekly shop, when she became so heavy, she struggled to simply walk around the store.

I couldlnt get around the store without having to sit down to rest as Id gotten so heavy, it was that bad.

Claudias sister had already lost eight and a half stone with Slimming World, so she decided to sign up with her mother for moral support in May, 2018 and has not looked back since.

In less than a year, she had lost over five stone, dropping from a size 22 to a size 10-12. and is now a Slimming World Consultant herself, running groups in MountRath and Naas in Kildare.

Nothing worked for me before, but this was just learning tiny changes that make a massive difference she explained.

You dont have to cut anything out and you can still eat anything you want, just tweak it. For example, rather than cooking with ordinary oils, getting one calories spray like Fry Light.

Youre not cutting out any carbs, you can still have those, if you do want any more treats like a bar of chocolate you can still have those using your Syns.

The idea is not to deprive yourself of anything. That made all the difference to me, before I would have cut out bread, and pasta, I thought you couldnt have any of those foods when youre trying to lose weight. Now none of that is off limits.

Claudia also revealed, her partner lost four stone without even joining the group himself, as the entire family switched from eating out and takeaways to home cooked meals.

And the entire family has benefited from the change as Claudia got a whole new lease of life, telling us, I just love that I dont have to say no to my kids anyway I can go out and play with them and that is incredible.

That was my goal from the beginning, that I could go for a walk with my kids, get on the trampoline with them and play with them without feeling like I was on my deathbed.

And sharing her advice to others struggling with their own weight, Claudia urges them not to be afraid to join a weight loss group.

I never thought I could lose weight and here I am after losing more than five stone she says. My family didnt think I would stick to this,and now nearly a year later, Im still at it, and even got a new career out of it, when I became a Slimming World Consultant.

The hardest part of starting is walking in those doors,the first time, but I guarantee when you do, you will be welcomed with open arms, there is absolutely no judgement. I know its so scary but take the first steps because your life will change completely.

Weight loss at home or perhaps more accurately, avoiding weight gain at home is suddenly a big deal for a lot of us. Another way to to eat less is to face how much we eat in general. Considering the amount of processed food we eat, it's easy to count the amount of caloriesand macronutrients (lipids[fat]/carbs/protein) we consume by using apps that scan barcodes of food items and does the adding up for us.

The best known of these apps is MyFitnessPal, but there are many other apps that can do the same thing. Garmin watches can integrate with it o you can see calories consumed vs calories burned on your wrist. Fitbit does a similar thing with its Fitbit Premium service. By realising just how many calories are in certain food items we eat, we can make more educated decisions about snacking in the future. Can you eat a box of Jaffa cakes in one sitting? Drinking more water is beneficial for a lot of reasons and now that we are all grounded in our homes, people can't really use the usual excuse not to drink more, which is "I'll need to go to the toilet more often", since the loo is really always available at home (we hope so anyway).

A leading plant-based medic has shared everything you need to know about losing weight on a whole-food plant-based diet in this exclusive Plant Based News video.

Michelle McMacken, MD is Assistant Professor of Medicine at NYU School of Medicine and the director of Bellevue Hospital Weight Management Clinic.

According to Dr. McMacken, her first weight loss tip is to 'start from a place of kindness to yourself'.

She adds: "I say that because having directed a weight management program for 15 years, what I've seen is that people get incredibly frustrated. It's a challenging process, and people can get really down on themselves because ultimately there are a lot of factors outside of our control that can go into maintaining our body weight.

"And so, while there are lots of things we can do to address our body weight, it's important to start from a place of compassion and kindness to yourself."

Dr. McMacken pointed out some of the specific difficulties people can have when losing weight, one being that many get to a point where it becomes more difficult to lose weight.

"That's not anyone's fault, or a lack of willpower," she said. "It's just biology. So it's important to be realistic about where you're going with it, and not be hard on yourself, and to minimize the shame you might feel if you slip-up, because again, everybody is human.

"So what I often will tell patients who come to see me when they are trying to lose weight, is that I'd like very much not to focus on the number on the scale. In fact, I have patients when they come to see me who we don't even check their body weight, because that can actually frustrate people more if it's not going as quickly as they would like or if it's going in the wrong direction."

She recommends instead focusing on tracking the behavioural changes you're making - as that is something tangible people are in control of.

Dr. McMacken's third tip is not to rely on willpower, which she joked 'extinguishes by about 1pm'.

"It's not really a good strategy for longterm weight loss - to rely on denying yourself, and willpower, and trying to white-knuckle yourself through a dietary plan," she said.

"What I think is much more important is to change your environment, and that looks like changing the foods that you just happen to have in your home, working with whoever you live with to help strategize with you...changing your routine - so that if you know you have a habit of walking past a certain bakery each day and getting a donut, it would be better just to walk on a different block so you're not tempted to do that."

The turning point: A lot of people dont realise that more than the weight itself, it is all the lifestyle diseases that haunt someone who is overweight. I indulge in: I did not believe in the concept of cheat days. So, I did not have any cheat days or cheat meals for 6 whole months.

My workout: I stuck to the basics when it came to working out. I made it a point to go for a brisk walk for at least 45 minutes every morning, without fail. I finished it off by drinking a glass of lukewarm water mixed with a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar (ACV).

Prioritizing Transplants When Other Surgeries Are on Hold – Medscape

Currently, living donors are urged to go ahead with the preliminary steps in the process remotely, but in-person appointments and transplants are largely on hold. Deceased-donor transplantations deemed essential surgeries are moving forward, but surgeons are having to use their best judgment to determine whether the kidney's donor was infected with COVID-19.

Rapidly evolving concerns about the effect that COVID-19 is having on kidney transplants was a hot topic at the virtual National Kidney Foundation 2020 Spring Clinical Meetings.

The COVID-19 concerns are being added to longstanding issues in the transplant community, such as the debate about whether patients who are obese should be required to lose weight before they can be considered for kidney transplantation.

Obesity can cause complications in kidney recipients, experts agree, but views on how much emphasis should be put on pretransplant weight loss differ.

"Kidneys are a limited resource and we can't transplant everyone," said Kenneth Woodside, MD, a transplant surgeon and associate professor of surgery at Michigan Medicine in Ann Arbor.

The implications of obesity for transplant patients were discussed in a virtual presentation by Woodside and Meera Harhay, MD, associate professor of medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia.

A link between obesity and death from cardiovascular disease after kidney transplantation was seen in a previous study. The meta-analysis showed that patients who are obese are twice as likely to die from cardiovascular disease after kidney transplantation as patients with a healthier weight, Woodside explained.

Cost to the healthcare system is also higher for kidney recipients who are obese, Woodside said.

Average accumulated Medicare payments for the first 3 years after transplantation ranged in cost (in 2012 US dollars) from $109,623 for living-donor recipients who had body mass index (BMI) of less than 18.5kg/m to $143,529 for those with a BMI over 40kg/m, according to an unpublished study of more than 8000 patients by Tayyab Diwan, MD, and colleagues from the University of Cincinnati.

"You really see a jump at the BMI 30 mark," Woodside pointed out.

There are practical concerns as well, he explained.

"It takes longer to sew in kidneys in obese patients, so there's more delayed graft function," he said. And "to sew vessels, you need to be able to see the vessels. Retractors are only so long."

There is no question that surgical complications are a big factor in patients who are obese, said Harhay, but there are several problems with mandated pretransplant weight loss and BMI cutoffs at transplant centers.

One is the steady increase of morbid obesity in the United States, which would limit access to an ever-rising number of patients.

Although there is no national standard BMI cutoff, 66 of 67 transplant programs in the United States use a BMI cutoff of 35 to 40kg/m, according to a previous study.

And 21% of transplant programs did not list any candidate with a BMI of 40kg/m or higher from 1995 to 2006, according to a study of all waiting-list registries in the United States.

"What that means is that in the United States, if you have end-stage kidney disease and morbid obesity, your access to a kidney transplant might depend more strongly on what transplant program you live near what they're willing to do than your own health status," Harhay explained.

"A BMI cutoff of 35kg/m would exclude about one in five adult incident dialysis patients in the United States from a kidney transplant evaluation, and a cutoff of 40kg/m would exclude one in 10 incident dialysis patients," she said, citing data from the US Renal Data System.

In addition, BMI does not equal body composition. "A person with a high BMI could be muscular, and that could be protective," Harhay said. "BMI doesn't differentiate between where fat is stored."

Importantly, it's hard for anyone to lose weight, let alone people who are on dialysis and perhaps also working. "Dialysis is an exhausting procedure and end-stage kidney disease is an exhausting condition," she emphasized.

But tips for patients with end-stage kidney disease who want to lose weight were provided at the virtual meeting by Karen Greathouse, RD, a transplant dietitian from the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor.

"The key to successful weight loss is not just losing the weight, but being able to maintain that for 5 or more years," she said.

The big problem with many diets is the lack of programs to support people. "We're trying to give handouts and expecting people to go with it," she explained.

Diets that include unusual combinations of food or that have a particular eating sequence are not sustainable, Greathouse pointed out.

She said she recommends individualized action plans with a dietitian for people with end-stage kidney disease. Dietitians will stress lifestyle changes and the importance of combining dietary changes with exercise, she noted.

And smaller goals relieve anxiety and increase the chances of success. Some people are given instructions to lose 50pounds, which "puts them at the bottom of a well trying to climb out," she explained.

And healthcare providers often tell people to limit fruits and vegetables because they contribute to fluid complications or high potassium levels.

"I can't tell you how many times I've heard patients say they've been told not to eat salad because it contributes to fluid," Greathouse said.

"When you're increasing fruits and vegetables, you're having better bowel movements, you're lowering your potassium deposits and fluid," she explained. "Processed foods have more potassium than the fruits and vegetables, and that's what a lot of our patients are eating."

Lisa slimmed down after giving up alcohol and junk food in 2012, but was left with a huge amount of excess skin.

The actress relied on a simple trick to slim down. At the beginning of her weight loss journey, Lisa watched her portion sizes and has now added a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise a day to her lifestyle.

Opening up about her decision to lose weight, Lisa told the Mirror: I started thinking about my own health.

People forget how gigantic I was. With the skin removal I lost 12 stone, one pound.

The surgeon chopped off one stone, four pounds. Since then my weight has more or less stayed the same.

Commenting on her new diet, Lisa added: Now, for lunch I eat either a bowl of soup or a plain jacket potato. Im never going to be a size 28 again.

The actress is known for playing Mandy Dingle in Emmerdale, but the soap has been suspended temporarily because of the coronavirus outbreak and Lisa is currently self-isolating at home.

Even now, you can have some control over your finances – The Boston Globe

Personal finance writing is particularly off-putting, often littered with turgid terminology such as credit utilization rates and expense ratios. It plods through well-worn territory with uninspiring views (how to make the best use of your tax refund). It resorts to outright finance shaming (do you really need that latte?).

With her recent book Napkin Finance it was released before the coronavirus pandemic ravaged financial markets and caused massive job layoffs Tina Hay takes a decidedly more lively and lighthearted approach to this serious subject. A New York Times reviewer called it the best personal finance primer I have read in years.

It is indeed good, but Napkin Finance works as much because of its visuals as the words. Each browsable chapter is fronted by simple, whimsical sketches the kind someone might draw on a napkin during an endless Zoom meeting. The drawings make complicated subjects such as asset allocation, estate planning, and IPOs less imposing.

Theres also an element rarely found in the finance genre: humor. And could we ever use some of that now. IRAs and 401(k)s can make you rich enough that your grandchildren will want to stay in touch with you, Hay writes. And, When youre starting a start-up, youll sleep like a baby. Youll wake up every two hours and cry a lot.

Hay says she realized the need for a different approach when she was working on her MBA at Harvard Business School, from 2000 to 2002, dazed and confused by the dense language of money matters. She spoke from her home in Los Angeles.

With the spectacular collapse of the economy, many people are just trying to cope with the day-to-day. But should those with a retirement or savings portfolio be doing anything differently today than they were a few months ago?

What people should not be doing is trying to time the market by guessing when to buy or sell or taking action when the market is headed down. What you can do is focus on the factors under your control. This includes reviewing your portfolio and asset allocation and making sure your investments are diversified to enable you to weather the storm and remain invested for the subsequent recovery.

Tell me more about the idea behind the books format.

I use images and sketches to understand topics, as many people do. Visual learning has been used by da Vinci, Mozart, Freud, and many others to solve problems. Its more digestible, fun, and engaging than traditional financial content.

It sounds like Harvard Business School came as a shock.

Id never taken a finance course or an economics class. I went in very intimidated, especially since I was sitting next to bankers and consultants. I found that visual learning and images were more comprehensible than anything else I was learning. Not just in money and finance, but in so many aspects of our lives, we feel overwhelmed when its just text.

Most people dont consider finances amusing, but you rely on humor to get your points across.

The power of comedy to help people relate to a topic; its worked in politics this is kind of like the Jon Stewart of that. Comedy can make everything more friendly and approachable.

A lot of this comes down to debt. Dave Ramsey (the radio show host whose 2003 book The Total Money Makeover serves as a roadmap for his many) preaches that the only acceptable debt is a home mortgage. Is that kind of tough-love approach realistic?

Im a big fan of Dave Ramsey. What hes done for so many people is amazing. But to say that you should avoid any kind of debt does not apply to every person. The general way to think about it is that good debt is anything that helps you increase your net worth. That can be your education, that can be investing in different assets. Bad debt is money borrowed to buy anything that loses value. Even a home equity loan can be looked at as good debt in some cases because usually the interest rates are lower than other types of debt. On the other hand, you have things like credit card debt and car loans.

Is borrowing money to buy stuff endemic to US consumers?

Americans now have more consumer debt (almost $14 trillion) than they did even at the peak of the [2008] financial crisis, which is so mind-blowing, but its not just an American issue. Taking on too much credit card debt and not being able to pay it back can negatively affect your financial well-being in so many ways. Most people approach debt without a plan and whats really important is to take small steps. to manage it like starting with your smaller balances and tackling those first.

Its easier than ever to spend. Alexa tells me its time to reorder dog treats and all I have to do is say yes. There used to be more of a connection to spending.

Right. You knew how much money you had in your wallet, for example. Its also a budgeting issue. Many people dont have a budget in place. Thats key to understanding how your moneys getting spent, and how you can save. Its understanding where your money is coming from, where its going, and balancing those two.

Lets talk about one of the worst investments: a new car. I see a lot of expensive SUVs in front of modest homes.

There is an auto loan crisis. There have been more delinquent car loans over the last 10 years or so. Its definitely not the best investment, or debt to carry. But for some reason, a lot of people are deciding to put money into cars they cant afford.

Whats the most common mistake people make with their finances?

One of the most important ones is not having an emergency fund. Forty percent of Americans couldnt pay an unexpected $400 expense. An emergency fund is really the basis of having financial security. Starting one can be automated like any other financial goal, and the key is to have three to six months of living expenses saved up.

Whats the dumbest thing youve done financially?

My biggest mistake was not investing earlier. Most women are not investing their money, or theyre passing [that job] along to someone else to help them out. If I had taken advantage of the opportunity to grow my money, I would have seen significant changes in my financial portfolio now. You can invest with a dollar a day. Its that simple, to get in the habit of saving.

Most of us dont talk openly about money.

It can be a source of shame for many people. You see a lot of families where parents have never talked about money with their kids. It is common to have secrecy, for people to hide their financial situation.

Does money really change everything?

It buys you peace of mind, and it can buy you access. It can be a virtuous cycle or a vicious cycle. People can grow their money or they can be stuck in student-loan debt early on and have that as a burden that they take with them throughout their career and their lifetime. It really impacts every aspect of your life, from your health to where you live and how you live, to how you spend your time. Having money means [being able to] give back through philanthropy. There are a lot of opportunities that money can buy.
