Exercise may not help older people fall less, study finds

Joining a regular exercise program may help older people move better, but it doesn't necessarily mean they are more steady on their feet or will lose their fear of falling, according to a German study.

"We can't take it for granted that if we improve on the physical performance that it will translate over to the psychological dimension," said Ellen Freiberger, lead author of the study and a sports medicine and gerontology researcher at Friedrich-Alexander-Universitat Erlangen-Nurnberg in Germany.

For the study, which appeared in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, Freiberger and her colleagues set out to compare different types of exercise and what impact, if any, they had on physical performance, falls and the fear of falling among older people.

The researchers recruited 280 people over age 70 who were still living independently in Erlangen, Germany. Between 2003 and 2006, the participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups and followed for the two years.

Of the four groups, one did not exercise at all. The other three used strength and balance exercises, but two also included either endurance exercises, which researchers used to gauge the participants' fitness, or an education program to measure their fear of falling.

The final group's regimen included elements of an educational program designed to reduce the fear of falling, and the people did mental exercises to target traits such as concentration and short-term memory.

Everyone in the study's exercise groups attended two one-hour sessions per week for 16 weeks. Each session had fewer than 15 people in it.

At the end, there was no difference between the four groups in the scores that tracked falls or the fear of falls, and only a slight improvement in the time it took to walk six meters.

For the no-exercise group, it took 51 seconds to walk six meters at a fast pace two years after the start of the study. It took the group that only did strength and balance exercises 48 seconds, which was the same amount of time for the group with the endurance exercises.

The fourth group, with the education component, came in the worst with 56 seconds.

Kerrie faded to 35kg

AT one point during her battle with coeliac disease, Wodonga woman Kerrie Winnetts weight plummeted to a mere 35kilograms.

For more than 25 years she had experienced excessive weight loss and tiredness that was wrongly diagnosed until 2001.

It has taken the past 10 years for her to reach a normal weight and learn to manage the debilitating illness.

I had no energy, I was flat out getting through a day, Mrs Winnett, 51, said.

I lost a lot of weight really quickly, people thought I was anorexic because I was so skinny.

Mrs Winnett was incorrectly diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome and another doctor told her it was all in her head.

My mother had passed away the year before from bowel cancer, we were nursing her, so that was stressful, she said.

I went to the doctor and he said it was in my head and virtually told me to go away.

But a new doctor suspected something more serious.

She thought it was bowel cancer so she sent me for blood tests but it came back with coeliac, Mrs Winnett said.

Study of the Day: Eating Chocolate for Breakfast Is Good for Your Diet

New research from Tel Aviv shows that starting the day with a full meal that includes a sweet dessert contributes to weight loss success.

PROBLEM: Though restrictive diets often result in weight loss, most obese dieters fail to keep the pounds off as soon as their cravings start to overpower their discipline. Can a more forgiving breakfast topped off with sweets help prevent this all-too-common obesity relapse?

METHODOLOGY: To determine if and how the timing and composition of meals affect short- and long-term weight loss, researchers led by Tel Aviv University's Daniela Jakubowicz randomly assigned 193 clinically obese, non-diabetic adults, ages 20 to 65, to one of two diet groups with identical daily caloric intake -- 1,600 for men, 1,400 for women. Those in the first group ate a low-carbohydrate diet that included a small 300-calorie breakfast while members of the second cluster were given a 600-calorie breakfast high in protein and carbs that always included dessert.

RESULTS: Halfway through the 32-week trial, participants in both groups had lost an average of 33 pounds per person. Things changed drastically soon after, however. While participants in the large-breakfast group lost another 15 pounds each, those in the low-carb group regained an average of 22 pounds each. At the end of the program, those who had less restrictive breakfasts had lost an average of 40 pounds more per person than their peers.

CONCLUSION: Starting the day with a full meal that includes a sweet dessert can bolster and maintain a dieter's weight-loss progress.

IMPLICATION: Curbing cravings is better than deprivation for dieting success, says Jakubowicz in a statement, since avoiding sweets altogether can create a psychological addiction to these same foods in the long-term.

SOURCE: The full study, "Meal Timing and Composition Influence Ghrelin Levels, Appetite Scores and Weight Loss Maintenance in Overweight and Obese Adults," is published in the journal Steroids.

Professional Eaters Scarf Down Slices, Tip the Scales Pre-Diet

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire -03/09/12)- Today DietBet.com, an online social dieting game that gives players the opportunity to compete to lose weight, announced the winner of its "last supper" competitive eating contest of gigantic pizza slices at the Ripley's Believe It or Not! Times Square Odditorium, located at 234 West 42nd Street.

Crowds cheered on the three members of All Pro Eating who bulked up on 32" Koronet pizzas before pulling a dietary 180 and weighing in for the start of their four-week long weight loss competition. The winner, Will "The Champ" Millender, not only scarfed down the most slices, but was also the heaviest of the bunch, tipping the scales at a whopping 446 pounds. Joel "The Cannon" Podelsky weighed in at 271.5 pounds and Mike "Sisco-Kid" Sisco weighed in at 268 pounds.

Players who reach their goal of dropping four percent of their starting weight in four weeks will split a $1,000 pot. Trained to do nothing but consume everything in front of them as quickly as possible, these men-turned-eating-machines will think twice before competing over the next month in wing-offs, ravioli races, taco triathlons, and milkshake marathons.

Members of All Pro Eating participating in the competition include:

The Champ, The Cannon, and Sisco-Kid competed live at Ripley's Odditorium on 42nd Street, while the others weighed in remotely. Ripley's Believe It or Not! Times Square's own Greg Dubin, known as the "Great Dubini" emceed the fattening festivities. Amazingly, all three eaters continued to munch on cheesy pizza well after time ran out on the clock.

"These slices of pizza were bigger than the contestants' heads ... and the crowd couldn't believe how quickly the pro-eaters swallowed them down," said Michael Hirsch, president/general manager of Ripley's Believe It or Not! Times Square. "In true Ripley's style, the event showcased a Believe It or Not! twist."

"Maybe that is why I got into competitive eating -- I would never turn down a free lunch," said Joel "The Cannon" Podelsky.

DietBet injects fun, competition, and social collaboration into Americans' seemingly never-ending quest to shed extra weight. Players use the DietBet message boards to offer both encouragement and trash talk. Getting into the spirit, Will "The Champ" Millender already shipped a case of Twinkies to Todd "The Hungry Genius" Greenwald.

"I've been in all kinds of eating competitions and this is one of the most unusual," said Jammin' Joseph Larue. "Getting professional eaters to lose weight ... it's like asking fish to walk or librarians to scream."

"We relish the opportunity to watch these expert eaters tackle a different kind of food-related competition. We're curious to see what they do to fill the time. Maybe Joel 'The Cannon' will get into Words With Friends," said Jamie Rosen, DietBet's founder.

Weight Loss Success: Kim Konkel Stopped Drinking Soda And Lost 98 Pounds

Got a success story of your own? Send it to us at success.stories@huffingtonpost.com and you could be featured on the site!

Name: Kim Konkel Age: 31 Height: 5'7" Before Weight: 236 pounds

How I Gained It: I have always been big. I just read an article that said if you are over 8 pounds, 7 ounces at birth you are considered a large baby. Well, I was 8 pounds, 9 ounces, so right off the bat I was bigger than most kids.

While I was growing up I never really exercised. I was diagnosed with severe asthma that made it hard for me to do much of anything for any length of time. I would play outside and ride bikes and go swimming, but that was about it. And that was only during the summer. Since we live in Wisconsin, playing outside in winter is possible, but only when it's not super-cold, and usually that is just to go sledding.

When I got pregnant with my daughter, I developed severe preeclampsia and got up to 263 pounds. My blood pressure skyrocketed and my doctor put me on medication.

Breaking Point: I was sitting at my computer one day in March of 2011, and I read an article written by Dr. Oz. In the article he was talking about how to lose weight and he said cutting out just 100 calories a day could result in dropping 10 pounds in a year. I had been diagnosed with cervical cancer in December 2010, and I figured the healthier my body was the more likely I was to beat the cancer. I was drinking at least six sodas per day, so that really got me thinking. I did the math and realized by stopping drinking soda I could easily cut out over 700 calories a day, just that easily.

How I Lost It: I started drinking sparkling water instead of soda. If it wasn't for that stuff I would have never been able to give it up. It tastes just like soda, but without any calories, sugar or sodium. I keep a huge supply of it on hand at all times! In the first month I dropped over 12 pounds, by just not drinking soda.

Then, I decided to actually try to start eating healthy. This is hard for me, especially at night. I suffer from severe insomnia. I am awake every two hours, like clockwork. Before, I would get bored or a little hungry and eat a whole TV dinner. I have since discovered I am a huge fan of guacamole! Now, at night when I wake up, I have some guacamole and some tortilla chips and that satisfies me for the next four times I wake up, so I don't eat anything else. I eventually thought about trying to lose more weight. My first goal was to get down to 200 pounds. That happened within a few months, so then I decided to get down to 184. That happened shortly thereafter. I just kept adjusting my goal weight as I would reach the next one.

I stepped on the scale today at 138. I am beyond thrilled. To get to this point I have been extremely disciplined about eating. I went from eating any and everything I wanted to knowing how much fat and how many carbs are in basically every piece of food on the face of the earth! I read tons of articles about weight loss and did a lot of research to educate myself so I would know off-hand what I should eat and what I should avoid.

I discovered that salad dressing doesn't have to be creamy to be good. I love fat-free Italian dressing. Put a touch of parmesan on the salad to give it some protein, and it tastes just like a Caesar salad! I found that in order for a person to be successful in losing weight, he or she needs to find foods that are healthy and tasty. You can't follow a diet if you don't like the food, it won't work. You have to figure out what will work for you. For me, it's all about tricking my brain into thinking I am eating unhealthy food, when I am really not. Take green beans: I flavor them with I Can't Believe It's Not Butter spray. That way, I get the taste of butter with less fat.

How diet affects bone status during catch-up growth

Washington, Mar 8 (ANI): Researchers have shed light on the effects of catch up growth (CUG) with different diets on bone status and the role of resveratrol in CUG models.

Although many current studies focused on catch up growth (CUG) have described its high susceptibility to insulin resistance-related diseases very few have focused on the effect of CUG on bone metabolism, especially in adulthood.

As diet is a controllable factor, the influence of re-feeding with different dietary patterns on bone parameters is important to study.

Resveratrol has been attributed a number of beneficial effects in mammals including osteotrophic properties. Wang and colleagues have described the first study to describe the effects of CUG, with various diets and resveratrol intervention on bone status.

CUG can lead to insulin resistance and low-grade systemic inflammation occurs in insulin resistance syndrome.

Tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-a is an important inflammatory cytokine, and Lange and Seriolo et al. indicated that anti-TNF alpha therapy may exert beneficial effects on bone metabolism, prevent structural bone damage and increase bone mineral density.

"Our results showed that food restriction induced a significant decrease in bone parameters. Eight-week CUG by normal chow demonstrated a greater degree of improvement in mineral density than a high-fat diet, and even returned to normal level," Dr. Wang said.

"In contrast, Mika C found that re-feeding for two years normalized bone formation activity in adolescent anorexia nervosa patients, but bone mineral density was still significantly lower than that of controls."

"Compared with neural anorexia, we found in this study the degree of impairment by four-week diet restriction on bone metabolism was relatively weaker, so that bone mineral density returned to normal level after re-feeding."

To better distinguish the effects of CUG by high-fat diet on bone status, these investigators set up a high-fat diet group.

From champagne to soda: Gaultier labeled Diet Coke creative director

While more accustomed to designing high-end collaborations like champagne packaging for Piper-Heidsieck, Jean Paul Gaultier is going for more mass market appeal by becoming the latest designer to collaborate with Diet Coke.

The French creator has been named the beverage's European creative director and is appearing in a series of short films for the brand.

As well as signing on to design bottles and cans, Gaultier will also have input on online content and retail concepts for 2012.

Plus, he's the star of three light-hearted short films for Diet Coke's YouTube channel, portraying a therapist, a journalist and a private detective solving a puppet's wardrobe dilemmas. See the first in the series at http://youtu.be/qoTR5bqsx-w.

His first limited-edition designs will be unveiled across Europe starting next month. Bottle designing isn't completely new to the creator though, as he has teamed up with Piper-Heidsieck in the past -- last year dressing a bottle of vintage champagne in black lurex, fishnet and Swarovski crystals. For the Diet Coke collab, Gaultier has hinted at a characterful creation.

"The brand asked me to explore its fun personality and to style the bottle. I want to show people the codes and signatures I love. The bottles have the shape of a woman's body, so it was great fun to 'dress' them," the French creator explained in a release.

"The Diet Coke motif is so beautiful I had to design around this. The finishing touch was to apply my logo to the bottle, like applying a fragile stamp -- making it something special you want to touch."

Gaultier follows in the footsteps of leading designers including Karl Lagerfeld, Roberto Cavalli and Nathalie Rykiel by teaming up with the soft drinks brand, while over in the US Diane von Furstenberg last month unveiled a limited-edition collection of bottles adorned with her signature prints in red and black.
