Intense Exercise Can Delay Pregnancy

Moderate physical activity - such as brisk walking, leisurely cycling, golfing and gardening - did not adversely the time it took to conceive indicating that moderate - but not intense - activity is fertility- friendly. the study concluded that:

"There was evidence for a dose-response relationship between increasing vigorous PA (physical activity) and delayed TTP (time to pregnancy) in all subgroups of women with the exception of overweight and obese women."

"Moderate PA was associated with a small increase in fecundability regardless of BMI. These ndings indicate that PA of any type might improve fertility among overweight and obese women, a subgroup at higher risk of infertility."

"Lean women who substitute vigorous PA with moderate PA may also improve their fertility."

This study was performed on women who were trying to conceive who were presumed fertile, ASRM President-Elect, Linda Giudice, MD, PhD, noted that:

"This study is particularly interesting because its participants were recruited from the general population, not from infertility patients. It points out the benefits of moderate exercise to all women who are planning a pregnancy and suggests that women might reduce their time to pregnancy by modulating their exercise programs."

It certainly *is* possible to conceive and carry a baby to term while running but it may be a minority of women who can do so given the unfavorable hormonal environment that is created by intense, frequent exercise.

While your physician may not have mentioned exercise as a factor in your infertility, if you are a runner or a spinner it may be wise to try switching some of your intense cardiovascular exercise for walking, yoga or another less aerobic activity that you enjoy. If you are taking clomiphene to induce ovulation make sure that your hormone levels are being carefully monitored and supported if your body is not yet producing adequate hormones after an extended period of running. Intense and frequent exercise is very healthy at most times of your adult life but you may need to hit the brakes a little while restoring a more fertility-friendly hormonal balance.

A Weight-Loss Solution: Don’t Eat Less. Just Don’t Eat More

You don't have to swap hamburgers for salads. Why you may shed more pounds if you focus less on eating healthier and more on simply not eating more

The anti-obesity messages are becoming mind-numbingly familiar: smaller portions. Less fried food. Fewer sodas. Its all true, but it has become mere background noise. Yes, fast-food companies have spectacular ad budgets (even as I write this article about horrifying obesity trends, I want that $10 Pizza Hut dinner box, the one that comes with a medium pizza and no fewer than 16 bread sticks). We livein a nation that can turn a lint-roller into an infomercial juggernaut. So why cant we sell healthy eating?

A study appearing this week in the Archives of Internal Medicine suggests a new idea. Maybe we should stop asking people to change or even limit their diets. Lets admit that no one really wants edamame more than Pizza Hut, and that when the Pizza Hut guy gets to the door, no one wants to see him carrying anything smaller than a Dinner Box. Instead, lets start with a simpler suggestion: just dont eat more than you do now.

This strategy wont solve the obesity problem, but it could help us to keep from getting any bigger. For two years, Gary Bennett of Duke Universitys Psychology & Neuroscience department and eight colleagues followed 365 obese patients who had already developed hypertension. The researchers chose not only a physically unhealthy population but one that was also struggling socioeconomically. Bennett says no participant in his study was earning more than $25,000 a year. The Duke team wanted to work with the poor because those with money can already afford to pick halibut and asparagus over hamburger and fries. For the poor, getting fresh fish and vegetables can mean a long bus ride and a weeks pay making health not only psychologically but also financially difficult.

(MORE: U.S. Obesity Rates Remain Stubbornly High)

The 365 patients were recruited from community-health centers and then randomly divided into two groups. The first group received whatever usual weight-loss care was provided at the center: typically a combination of one-on-one advice and then some take-home material that might include steps to follow on how to exercise more and eat better. Those in the first group also had the opportunity to schedule future appointments to talk about weight loss. Most did not.

The participants in the other group got roughly the same amount of time with a counselor and similar advice on how to lose weight. But they were also given the opportunity to receive monthly counseling calls from educators trained in the principles of motivational interviewing a well-studied method of cognitive therapy. And the participants in the second group were given the option of attending a monthly group session where they could share personal stories. But in order to keep the program inexpensive, the participants werent given specific diets. They didnt have to follow calorie counts or avoid certain foods, although they were repeatedly asked during the phone calls and in the group meetings not to eat more than they already did.

This approach has some advantages: even a cash-poor community clinic can set up a monthly call and occasional group meetings. This approach also has some disadvantages, chiefly that few participants actually lost much weight. After two years, those in the intervention arm of the study had lost only an average of 2.2 lbs (1 kg) compared with those in the control group. The amount wasnt statistically significant.

(MORE: Americas Obesity Crisis: Why We Eat)

But whats important is that most of the participants who got the automated calls and went to the meetings didnt gain weight and they showed significant improvement in their blood-pressure scores compared to those in the control group. People in this population tend to gain weight year after year, typically one to three pounds per year, says Bennett. Its very hard for anyone to lose weight, but we seem to have found a strategy that can help people at least not to put on more weight.

Diet 'linked' to low sperm counts

14 March 2012 Last updated at 03:39 ET

A diet high in saturated fat has been linked with a reduced sperm count.

A study of 99 men attending a US fertility clinic found those eating junk food diets had poorer sperm quality.

High intakes of omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish and plant oils, were associated with higher sperm concentration.

More work is needed to confirm the findings, the researchers report in the journal Human Reproduction.

The team, led by Prof Jill Attaman from Harvard Medical School in Boston, questioned men about their diet and analysed sperm samples over the course of four years.

Compared with those eating the least fat, men with the highest fat intake had a 43% lower sperm count and 38% lower sperm concentration (number of sperm per unit volume of semen).

..it does add weight to the argument that having a good healthy diet may benefit male fertility as well as being good general health advice.

Men consuming the most omega-3 fatty acids had sperm with a more normal structure than men with the lowest intake.

Prof Attaman said: "The magnitude of the association is quite dramatic and provides further support for the health efforts to limit consumption of saturated fat given their relation with other health outcomes such as cardiovascular disease."

Losing belly fat helps improve blood vessel function

(WTVR) Researchers have discovered that losing belly fat allows blood vessels to work better.

In a six month study, researchers at John Hopkins found that the more belly fat people lost, the better their arteries were able to expand when needed, allowing more blood to flow more freely.

Researchers studied 60 men and women who weighed an average of 215 pounds at the start of the program. Half of the participants went on a low-carb diet while the others followed a low-fat diet. All took part in moderate exerciseand their diets provided a similar amount of calories each day.

The findings of the study were consistent with early results presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine in Denver. That initial report was based on results after participants in the study had lost their first 10 pounds. These longer-term results show that weight loss, along with exercise, is important for improving vascular health, and suggests following a low-card diet rather than the conventionally recommended low-fat diet for weight lossis not a concern in terms of vascular health.

Doctors say being overweight increases the risk of cardio-vascular disease, especially if the fat is in the belly above the waist.

Wrestlers scale down on drastic weight-cutting measures

Coach Brian Smith will gather his Missouri wrestlers for a team meal tonight in anticipation of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, Thursday through Saturday at Scottrade Center. The pre-tourney dinner has become a ritual for the Tigers, and the table will be especially full and boisterous this year because Missouri is the only team to qualify wrestlers in all 10 weight classes.

What a change from Smith's competitive days at Michigan State in the late 1980s and early '90s.

"The night before a meet, guys would never eat," Smith said. "We'd be trying to cut 10 pounds or more before the weigh-in. I look back and say 'I'm so glad we don't have that any more.'"

But the sport needed a triple tragedy 15 years ago to see the light.

Three collegiate wrestlers died in a span of 33 days in 1997, each trying to "cut weight." The practice involves drastic methods, such as fasting, vomiting, excessive exercise in saunas or sweat suits and other dehydrating practices, to quickly drop 10 pounds or more.

Cutting weight was viewed as a point of pride, a badge of honor, a part of the culture.

The methods caused pervasive physical side effects, including fatigue and greater risk of injury because of a lack of fluids in the joints. Though considered a sign of mental toughness, cutting weight also could exact a psychological toll.

"The kids would focus on the scale instead of wrestling," Smith said. "They would worry about how much weight they had to lose vs. how to improve technique."

The NCAA Wrestling Committee moved swiftly to enact sweeping changes in the same season, and the new rules spread to the high school level within a few years.

Among the changes:
