Programming fat cells to burn calories `may help lose weight`

Washington, Mar 9 (ANI): In a new study, researchers have suggested that ordinary fat cells can be reengineered to burn calories.

While investigating how a common drug given to people with diabetes works in mice, researchers from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) discovered that a protein called PRDM16, found in both men and mice, can throw a switch on fat cells, converting them from ordinary calorie-storing white fat cells into calorie-burning brown fat cells.

This discovery makes PRDM16 a possible target for future obesity drugs. Compounds that promote the action of this protein may help people burn calories faster.

Though they would have to prove safe and effective in the clinic, such compounds would represent a completely different approach to weight loss. Existing diet drugs aim to restrict the intake of calories - by blocking the absorption of fat in the gut, for instance, or by decreasing appetite.

"If you think about the energy balance, the other way to tackle obesity is through energy expenditure," Shingo Kajimura, the study leader, said.

Scientists believe that brown fat originally evolved in early mammals as a defense against the cold. It helps them maintain their body temperature and thrive in the face of challenging environmental extremes. Not all animals share this ability.

Many animals, like lizards, are "cold blooded" or exothermic. They maintain their body temperature through completely external means, sunbathing at certain times of the day and huddling in warm, protective places at night.

This naturally limits their range and explains why lizards, so abundant in tropical climates, are far rarer in cold climates.

"Warm-blooded" mammals, on the other hand, are endothermic. They produce heat internally by a variety of means: shivering, sweating and regulating the size of their blood vessels. Brown fat also contributes by burning fatty acids, which heats the blood coursing nearby, and in turn warms the body.

Though scientists once thought new brown fat was only made in babies, we now know that the human body is capable of creating new brown fat cells throughout life.

Bloomfield Hills business owner gives employees incentive to lose weight

By MONICA DRAKE - monica.drake@oakpress.com; Twitter: @monica_adele

H.A. Sun Heating & Cooling employees Charolette Salo and Jeff Klueger are pictured after their company-wide Biggest Loser weigh-in.

When Oklahoma City was named one of the fattest cities in America, Mayor Mick Cornett challenged residents to lose weight as a city and, as a result, they lost a combined one million pounds.

Henry Abrams, owner of H.A. Sun Heating & Cooling in Bloomfield Hills, has announced a similar challenge for Oakland County businesses.

My goal and end result on a larger scale would be to lower insurance premiums by having people losing weight and being more conscious of what they're eating, Abrams said.

Abrams is hosting an eight-week contest within his own company based on the NBC show The Biggest Loser. Nineteen of Sun Heatings 50 employees have signed up to lose a collective 400 pounds.

The group collectively weighed in at 4,260.9 pounds at the beginning of the contest last month.

The first-place winner will receive $500 and the second place winner will receive $250. Employees will be judged based on percent of body weight lost, not total number of pounds.

The current first-place winner at the fifth weigh-in is Roberta Gorevitz. Second place is Eric McMullen and third place is Charlotte Salo. Abrams said the first-place winner has, so far, lost 10 percent of her body weight. As of last week, the group collectively lost 120 pounds.

Stacy Keibler: My body takes work

Stacy Keibler works really hard in order to achieve her stunning figure.

The former wrestler is famed for her statuesque physique and took the opportunity to show it off on the red carpet during awards season recently.

Despite admitting to being blessed with good genes, Stacy says a balanced diet and regular exercise are vital to achieve her enviably toned curves.

You really have to work hard. I train for at least two hours a day to get my body. Im lucky that Im tall and athletic, because it hides a few extra pounds, she revealed in an interview with British magazine Closer.

I eat a strict diet, but I dont leave out carbohydrates. High-protein fad diets are the worst thing you can do because everything needs to be in balance.

The 32-year-old star has named her favourite body part. Stacy admits to taking every opportunity to highlight her best bits.

My back is my best feature because its so toned. I often wear dresses to show it off, she said.

The blonde beauty wowed alongside beau George Clooney at the 84th Academy Awards at the end of last month.

Stacys Hollywood boyfriend gave her curve-hugging metallic dress his seal of approval last week saying: By the way, shes not wearing a dress shes just been sprayed gold, he laughed.

Next Top Model winner fired for 'big hips'

Ananda Marchildon was told lose weight and get her waist down to 90cm. Picture: AP Source: AP

A FORMER winner of the television show Holland's Next Top Model has won a lawsuit against Elite Model Management after she was dropped for having hips the agency considered too large.

The Amsterdam District Court ruled that Ananda Marchildon, now 25, was entitled to the main prize she won in the 2008 production of the show, a three-year contract worth 75,000 euros ($93,500).

Marchildon argued she was dismissed after only 10,000 euros worth of work because she didn't lose enough weight to please the agency.

According to the written ruling, though Marchildon had gained weight since getting the contract, she had a hip measurement of 92 centimetres when she won, and Elite could not demand that she go down to 90 centimetres. That is far smaller than the average woman's hips but not unusual in the modelling world.

"I was right, after all," she said on Wednesday in a reaction published by Dutch daily NRC Handelsblad. "I hope that makers and participants reconsider the structure of this kind of program."

Marchildon's lawyer said she would comment further after she finishes the day's shift at her new job - as a carpenter.

Marchildon was hired by underwear company Sloggi for a one-time shoot on Monday to show that she is still fit for modelling work. Picture: AP

Cardio And Pooping: A Chart Of Every MLB Player Who Reportedly Lost Or Gained Weight This Offseason (And Why) [Mlb]

Every spring training, seemingly every other ballplayer shows up to camp and declares himself "in the best shape of my life." Our pal Craig Calcaterra over at HardballTalk has done yeoman's work on this phenomenon over the years, but we wanted to know more: Who gained weight? Who lost weight? How much? And why?

We've compiled a list below featuring baseball's biggest losers and gainers for the 2012 baseball season. With a few exceptions, the 2012 weight figures were calculated using listed weights for 2011 and adding or subtracting whatever pounds were gained or lost. A word of caution: Because we're talking about two things that entail a great deal of magical thinkingbaseball players and weightit's likely that just about every number listed below is a fib.

Mike Scioscia, Angels manager 2011 weight: 268 pounds 2012 weight: 230 pounds [estimate by Angels PR department] Where the weight went: "So Scioscia started eating better, eating less, and walking like a postman, covering as much as 10 miles a day in the off-season, some of it with his golden Lab, Bella." [Los Angeles Times]

Bobby Jenks, Red Sox pitcher 2011 weight: 275 pounds 2012 weight: 240 pounds Where the weight went: "Basically from the middle of last season until December, I had nothing to do but work out, so that's all I did. I popped a movie on during the winter for the kids and would just sit behind the couch and ride the bike all day." [MLB.com]

Brett Cecil, Blue Jays pitcher: 2011 weight: 235 pounds 2012 weight: 203 pounds Where the weight went: "Cecil wasn't happy with himself or the fact that he was demoted after a 1-2, 6.86 start to the season (after leading the team with 15 wins in 2010). At the end of the season, he had a frank discussion with management and committed to a serious weight loss and training program over the off-season." [Toronto Star]

Carlos Villanueva, Blue Jays pitcher: 2011 weight: 236 pounds 2012 weight: 205 pounds Where the weight went: "I was 236 on Oct. 31, and I saw myself and was like, Man, I look horrible,' and I felt horrible, I was eating horrible, so I just started working out, did cardio for two months, all the way to Dec. 31. After that I started lifting, stayed eating well and originally I wanted to be 215, which was my weight a couple of years ago when I felt good, but my metabolism got fast and when I got here I didn't even know how much I weighed and I was 205. I was like, Jeez, a little too low.' It's weird, last couple of years it was like I've got to maintain, I've got to lose, now I've got to eat so I can fill out my uni a little more." [Sportsnet]

Jake Westbrook, Cardinals pitcher 2011 weight: 215 pounds 2012 weight: 190 pounds Where the weight went: "Two weeks with no carbohydrates melted 14 pounds, and nutrition along with an altered training regimen took care of the rest. 'It was club encouraged,' manager Mike Matheny said. 'He looks good. Obviously, he's lost some weight but he's also put on some muscle mass, so that's a great combination.'" [AP]

Ryan Lavarnway, Red Sox catcher 2011 weight: 225 pounds 2012 weight: 200 pounds Where the weight went: "He said he lost 25 pounds in the off-season, twice. He got sick in Venezuela and lost the weight. He put it back on and then lost it again." [CBS Boston]

Miguel Cabrera, Tigers first baseman 2011 weight: 240 pounds 2012 weight: 220 pounds Where the weight went: "[Catcher Alex] Avila spoke about Cabrera's conditioning program on Friday with ESPN, but also over the phone with The Detroit News. Avila said Cabrera has lost 20-plus pounds with the intention of losing 'at least 15 more.' 'You know, you can make up your mind that you're going to be able to do something,' Avila said, 'but in this situation, Miguel has thrown himself into doing everything he can to do the best job he can.'" [The Detroit News]

Tim Lincecum, Giants pitcher 2011 weight: 197 pounds 2012 weight: 175 pounds Where the weight went: "Lincecum took to using a counter-current pool to get down to around 175 pounds from 197. He also cut down on his famous trips to In-N-Out while eliminating other outlets entirely." [Yahoo]

MyNetDiary’s Food and Exercise Tracker Works with Any Diet

Popular calorie counter service makes the most of any popular diet plan.

Cherry Hill, NJ (PRWEB) March 08, 2012

The power of MyNetDiarys detailed food and exercise tracking service is its ability to document precisely what we eat, how many calories we burn and even when we eat, explains Katherine Isacks, Registered Dietitian with MyNetDiary, and people can track calories on-the-go with MyNetDiarys mobile apps for iPhone, iPad, Android and BlackBerry.

As the U.S. News recently released its top 25 diets, based on being relatively easy to follow, nutritious, safe and effective for weight loss and against diabetes and heart diseases, MyNetDiary serves as a tool that can effectively assist anyone on these diets to make them extremely effective.

For instance, the top-ranking diet, according to U.S. News, is the DASH Diet. Originally developed to fight high blood pressure, it emphasizes eating foods high in potassium, calcium, protein and fiber, while cutting back on sodium. MyNetDiary members can track all these nutrients easily by logging meals and snacks. MyNetDiary allows for tracking over 40 different macro and micro-nutrients.

Other diets, especially ones that use point system, benefit from using MyNetDiary in conjunction because it can translate the simplistic point systems into actual nutritional values people can understand. Over time, dieters will see a correlation between points, calories and particular macro-nutrients, which will equip them to make better food choices without the need to count points at all.

MyNetDiary teaches people to be able to look over a Nutrition Facts label on any food package and determine if its a healthy choice, says Isacks. While points will help people make choices based upon calories, they are not as helpful when youre standing in the grocery aisle trying to choose between two types of breakfast cereals. However, knowing how to decipher calories, fat, carbs and other nutrients on the spot can help you make the right choice. But for those who do like the simplicity of points, MyNetDiary offers a Food Score, which provides an easy to read numerical +/- score for determining a foods healthfulness.

Food journaling adds accountability to dieting, and for many people trying to lose weight, especially through diets that are unfamiliar, the act of keeping track of calories consumed and calories burned keeps them engaged with the process, which may help them succeed.

For more information about how the MyNetDiary calorie counter works with each of the U.S. News Top 25 diets, or to arrange an interview with Registered Dietitian, Katherine Isacks, contact MyNetDiary at (800) 385-7461 ext. 1015 or visit http://www.mynetdiary.com.

24/7 Fitness files for Chapter 11

The owner of regional chain Lehigh Valley Racquet and 24-7 Fitness Clubs has filed for bankruptcy protection in an attempt to save the company from a crushing debt load that has dogged the company for more than a year.

The corporation that owns the three facilities filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Monday, citing an "unmanageable interest rate" on the company's roughly $8 million mortgage.

"The interest rate is too much to handle and we want to get a more reasonable rate," said John F. Brinson, owner and CEO of Lehigh Valley Racquet & 24-7 Fitness Clubs.

Monday's filing to restructure debt is Brinson's latest attempt to save a business that he started in 1979. It is also highlights changes in the competitive health club industry, as members increasingly shop for low-cost gyms.

Brinson said his business suffered through the Great Recession, and despite a recent uptick in memberships, he has not been able to make mortgage payments.

In 2010, Brinson closed the 24/7 Fitness Clubs' location in downtown Allentown, which was the chain's least profitable facility. The chain also cut monthly membership fees to an average of $40, down from $46 in 2008, to appeal to cost-conscious consumers, Brinson added.

The Chapter 11 filing comes at a time when industry experts say consumers are shifting memberships to a growing number of no-frills and low-cost gyms.

There are 24-7 Fitness Clubs in Bethlehem, Trexlertown and South Whitehall Township. Brinson still owns the downtown Allentown location, which is listed for sale at $1.25 million, according to the real estate listing.

In an email to members Wednesday, Brinson said the facilities would not close and the Chapter 11 filing will not have an impact on the day-to-day operations. He noted the chain has increased memberships to 9,800 "only 300 off our all-time high in 2007, before the collapse of the housing bubble."

"There's no way we will cease operations because the banks wouldn't allow it," Brinson said in an interview Wednesday. "If they ceased, the value of the clubs would be nothing."
