Drs. Oz and Roizen: 3 tips for bouncing back from difficult times

Theres new data on how to take a licking and keep on ticking. Like the old Timex watch commercials, the key to longevity is resilience: the ability to bounce back in the face of adversity, such as the death of a loved one or the loss of a job. But its not always easy to do. For about 20 percent of us, it comes naturally (some research shows the numbers are higher); those people are glad to get back into the swing of life pretty quickly, feeling stronger for having weathered the storm. For others, its a long, slow slog through the blues until you come out the other side. Fortunately, everyone can learn how to gain the health benefits of resilience: less stress, lower risk of heart disease, less depression and anxiety. Here are three ways you can strengthen your ability to bounce back:

1. Cultivate an optimistic outlook, which is a key part of being resilient. For us, looking on the bright side is enhanced with daily meditation. This is how we say bye to the stress that causes grumpiness.

2. Keep your body strong and limber by eating a diet powered by lean protein and lots of veggies, fruits and 100 percent whole grains. When you feel physically strong, your self-esteem increases, another vital part of resilience.

3. Nurture your social connections. They provide security and love, and help keep emotions on an even keel. Blood pressure goes down; ability to cope goes up.

So reach out and touch someone, physically and emotionally.

What do Naomi Judd, Christopher Kennedy Lawford and Gregg Allman have in common? Hepatitis C. They, like 2 million of their fellow baby boomers, were infected with this virus that causes chronic liver disease. And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is sounding the alarm: If youre a boomer, get tested, get treated, get on it today! Why? Because people born between 1945 and 1965 are the segment of the population most likely to have hep C, and yet most have no idea they are infected.

Hep C takes its time chipping away at the liver, and decades can pass without any noticeable symptoms. During that time, an infected person may unknowingly pass the infection to others through contact with infected blood (sharing a needle, toothbrush or razor) or sexual activity. The newly infected person may then unknowingly pass it along, too. And that can repeat again and again. See why we have a problem?

Hep C causes liver disease from 70 percent to 85 percent of the time and can trigger cirrhosis or liver cancer. But the good news is that with treatment, 75 percent of cases can be cured. So go to your doctor for a simple one-time blood test. It checks for antibodies to the hep C virus. If youve got the insidious bug, you need to know what subtype of the infection you have; it changes treatment choices and effectiveness. Knowledge is power the power to protect your health and the health of those with whom you come in contact.

A nighttime charley horse can get you up and dancing, but unlike two-stepping at the club, its no fun. Theories abound about why these painful muscle cramps happen and how to prevent them. Everything from quinine to medications such as anti-anxiety drugs, muscle relaxers and vascular dilators are prescribed. For most, and most of the time, four simple steps will prevent this late-night, foot-stamping samba.

Step 1: Get plenty of vitamin D-3, magnesium, potassium, and calcium (get tested for your blood levels of these and iron, too). Deficiencies are linked to cramping. From food and supplements aim for:

Weightloss Rules to Break or Follow

The 6 Meals A Day Rule pushers claim you'll speed up metabolism and prevent binges, cravings and overeating but the study this rule was based on is not accurate. This rule works well for some people but can cause major calorie issues for others so feel free to break this rule if eating 6 meals a day is messing with your calorie intake.

The No Carbs After 2 Rule is a very specific rule followed mainly by personal trainers and bodybuilders who prefer to look ripped year round. There is no proof that avoiding carbs after 2 p.m. boosts weight loss or fatloss so feel free to break this rule. Only follow this rule if it helps you control calories.

The No Eating After 5 or 7 Rule is a recommended by many weight loss experts who believe that setting a cut off time is key to calorie control. Feel free to break this rule. When you eat has nothing to do with how much you lose unless you're eating more calories than you need.

The Eat Like A Pauper At Night Rule is a silly rule created by people who think breakfast is the most important meal of the day. The truth is every meal is the most important meal of the day when you're trying to lose weight so no need to eat like a king for breakfast, like a princess for lunch and like a pauper for dinner. Break this silly rule and eat adequate calories for your level of activity and your preferences.

The Eat Protein At Every Meal Rule is a rule that trainers, athletes, and bodybuilders follow to pack on lean muscle or maintain lean muscle. It is also a rule low carbers follow since they don't eat many carbs. Feel free to break this rule if you prefer less protein but follow it if you like a more balanced approach to weight loss and healthy eating. Do keep in mind that a little goes a long way; 1 egg, 3 oz meat, chicken or fish or 1/4 cup cottage cheese is more than enough.

Learn how to set sensible weight loss rules with help from The Rules of "Normal" Eating: A Commonsense Approach for Dieters, Overeaters, Undereaters, Emotional Eaters, and Everyone in Between!

Lilly Targets Sanofi Diabetes Top-Seller on Weight Loss

Fitch Cuts Long-Term Ratings on 18 Spanish Banks

By Shannon Pettypiece and Elizabeth Lopatto - 2012-06-12T04:01:00Z

Eli Lilly & Co. (LLY) may have an edge in the $20 billion diabetes market with its novel drug that matches Sanofis top-seller Lantus at controlling blood sugar while helping patients lose weight.

Patients with Type 2 diabetes taking Lillys experimental insulin lost an average of 1.28 pounds after 12 weeks compared with a weight gain of 0.68 pounds with Lantus, according to data released at the American Diabetes Association meeting.

The new therapy, known by the scientific name LY2605541, is being developed with Boehringer Ingelheim GmbH as part of a deal the two companies struck in 2011 to work on diabetes drugs. If similar results are found in a larger study, it may be the first insulin to help patients lose weight, providing an edge over Lantus and an experimental treatment from Novo Nordisk A/S (NOVOB), said Mark Schoenebaum, an analyst with ISI Group.

Even modest, but real, weight loss could be a major commercial advantage over other basal insulins, in our opinion, Schoenebaum said in a note to clients.

Its not clear how the experimental insulin is causing weight loss. Most insulin causes slight weight gain, a particular problem for patients with Type 2 diabetes, who are usually overweight, said David Kendall, a medical fellow at Indianapolis-based Lilly.

Insulin therapy in particular are important to improve glucose control and to do so as safely as possible, Kendall said in a telephone interview. We want to understand the weight-loss mechanism.

The studies released yesterday at the diabetes meeting are the second of three stages of testing generally required to gain U.S. approval. The insulin now is being tested in five Phase 3 studies. Data from those studies may be submitted to regulators as early as 2014, said Enrique Conterno, the president of Lillys diabetes unit.

Lilly plans more studies to determine whats causing the weight loss, Kendall said.

Atkins diet causes 'heart disease risk' after linked to surge in cholesterol levels

Low carbohydrate/high fat diets may help short-term weight loss but don't work long term, say researchers Controversial diet also found to increase blood cholesterol

By Claire Bates

PUBLISHED: 03:23 EST, 11 June 2012 | UPDATED: 03:32 EST, 11 June 2012

The popular Atkins diet could be putting people at increased risk of heart disease, according to a 25-year study.

Researchers from Sweden found the introduction of the low-carbohydrate regime led to a surge in saturated fat intake in 2004, with a spike in cholesterol levels three years later.

Study leader Professor Ingegerd Johansson, from the University of Umea, said: 'While low carbohydrate/high fat diets may help short-term weight loss, these results of this Swedish study demonstrate that long-term weight loss is not maintained and that this diet increases blood cholesterol, which has a major impact on risk of cardiovascular disease.'

Full English? A diet high in protein but low in carbohydrates can play havoc with cholesterol levels, say scientists

In 2004 there was an explosion in the popularity of low carbohydrate/high fat (LCHF) diets like Atkins in Sweden. The diets focus on cutting out sugar and starch while upping intake of fats, including saturated fat.

Its proponents, such as Dr Annika Dahlqvist, who is credited with starting the Swedish craze, argue that it helps maintain normal weight and blood sugar while freeing people to eat their favourite foods.

A poll last year suggested that a quarter of Swedes had at least partly adopted an LCHF diet. Around five per cent had taken it up seriously, leading the DietDoctor website to hail a "Swedish low carb revolution". There were even reports of stores running out of butter due to increasing demand.

Planet Fitness gets pumped up for IPO

The unconventional but fast-growing Planet Fitness gym chain is looking to hire bankers before going public, The Post has learned.

The Newington, NH, company, with more than 500 locations including 20 in the city offers some of the lowest membership fees in the sector, with plans costing up to only $20 a month, with no contracts and very limited service.

Company revenue was $157 million in 2012, according to an industry estimate.

The idea is to sign up a huge number of members 7,000 per location since they will come in only once a week as opposed to the twice a week average for more conventional gyms that offer superior service for much higher prices, industry consultant John Atwood said.

While offering decent equipment, it spends less than 25 percent of expenses on personnel, while competitors are paying more than 40 percent.

As a result, Planet Fitness has operating profit margins of about 25 percent. Atwood said the industry norm is around 10 percent.

The stagnant economy is pumping up the chain and its low-cost recipe.

Atwood said the question for underwriters is how sustainable the business model actually is.

Inc. magazine put Planet Fitness on its list of the 5,000 fastest-growing companies based on the gyms 216 percentage revenue growth from 2007 to 2010.

The chain has also gotten a marketing boost by being the featured gym on NBCs The Biggest Loser.

Drop it! 3,000 cops given 8 weeks to lose weight

11-Jun-12, 12:38 PM | Abigail Kwok, InterAksyon.com

InterAksyon.com The online news portal of TV5

MANILA - Thousands of policemen will have to undergo an eight-week program to lose weight after they failed to meet a height-to-weight standard instituted by the National Police.

PNP spokesman Sr. Supt. Generoso Cerbo Jr. said around 3,000 policemen - half of the personnel at Camp Crame - were overweight, with body-mass indeces (BMI) beyond what the PNP considers acceptable.

The overweight policemen will undergo an eight-weekweight loss program. The program includes weekly health education lecturesthat take on such topics as caloriesand exercise, water, healthy breakfast, protein fats, metabolism, sugars and carbohydrates, dining out, and stress - and "why it is difficult to lose weight".

"It is important for policemen to be healthy. Physical fitness can beequated to good performance in our jobs. The concern of the PNP, morethan anything else, is the health of our personnel," Cerbo toldreporters.

The eight-week weight loss program comes on top of the regular exercisesconducted by PNP personnel and the periodic Physical Fitness Test(PFT) that all policemen are required to undergo. According to PNPregulations, failed PFT ratings may result in dismissal from service.

The PNP Health Service and the Directorate for Personnel and RecordsManagement (DPRM) will closely monitor the individual state and progress of the policemen over the course of their eight-week regimen.

Mum slims down for daughter's sake

HINERANGI VAIMOSO

MOTHERLY LOVE: Louise Martin is getting fit and healthy enough to donate a kidney to daughter Lisa should it ever be needed.

Louise Martin had tried to lose weight a few times over the years with no success.

Then she found out she could one day save her daughter Lisa's life by slimming down and getting healthy enough to donate a kidney.

"There's real motivation behind it now," the northwest mum says. "What could be more motivating than your child's life?"

Nine-year-old Lisa had trouble putting on weight from day one and only managed to gain 1kg in the first four months of life.

She was diagnosed with kidney problems around her first birthday after months of hospital visits and has a polycystic kidney, which is covered in cysts, as well as a urinary reflux problem.

Lisa has ongoing problems and there is a chance she may one day need a transplant.

She is among the many children who will benefit directly from Project Kidney, a fundraiser being run by the Mad Butcher and Suburban Newspapers Community Trust

Proceeds will help buy four haemodialysis machines for the first-ever national dedicated Paediatric Haemodialysis Unit at Starship Hospital.

England v West Indies: live

OVER 57: ENG 220/5 (Bell 75* Finn 0*) Bell, again, takes a single off ball two. Field comes in for Samuels to have four balls at Finn. He nearly does him with a much quicker one, a 72mph dart. Hits Finny on the pad, but that was going down leg.

OVER 56: ENG 219/5 (Bell 74* Finn 0*) That must have been about the light, becuase Best is out of the attack after one over. It's Narine to bowl instead. Bell takes a single off ball two and Finn handles the rest.

OVER 55: ENG 218/5 (Bell 73* Finn 0*) Bell takes a single off the second ball of Samuels' over. So Bell isn't going to take the strike then. Okay. Finn is beaten on the outside edge two balls in a row. The umpires, I think, have had a word with Sammy - probably to tell him that they are weighing up the light again?

OVER 54: ENG 217/5 (Bell 72* Finn 0*) Well then, with England needing 277 to avoid following on, this game could get very interesting indeed if England lose another couple tonight. As a bulwark against that, they send Steve Finn as a nightwatchman. Yet again it seems to be up for debate as to what the nightwatchman is meant to be doing: Bell pinching the strike at the end of the over.

WICKET! Bairstow b Best 18 No he won't! He doesn't need to! After a couple of no balls, and a meaningless bouncer, Tino goes for the full straight one, Bairstow plays all around it and that is the end of him. FOW 215/5

OVER 53: ENG 213/4 (Bell 71* Bairstow 18*) Bairstow starting to look classy. Works it through mid on for two, then cracks Samuels for four through point. After a single, though, Belly is beaten on the outside edge by Samuels. It looks like man-of-the-day TIno Best is coming back for a last blast at Bairstow. Will he work him over with the short stuff?

Peter writes: "This is not about Jonny's ability as a cricketer, which is there for everyone to see, it's purely about his mental toughness to succeed at Test level. One thing's sure if this young man stays at the crease for any time that scoreboard is going to rocket round - hope he makes it."

OVER 52: ENG 206/4 (Bell 71* Bairstow 11*) Lovely shot from Belly through the covers gives him four off Rampaul.

OVER 51: ENG 200/4 (Bell 65* Bairstow 11*) That's a nice shot from Bairstow, too straight and too flat from Samuels, and Jonny clips that past square leg for a quality four. Bringing up the 200 in the process.

OVER 50: ENG 196/4 (Bell 65* Bairstow 7*) Now Rampaul gives Bairstow a couple of bouncers, and the Yorkshireman handles them very nicely. Single off the penultimate ball of the over.

hCGTreatments Announces the Creation of a Doctor-Designed Diet Capable of Shaving up to 30 Pounds Per Month Without …

New York, NY (PRWEB) June 11, 2012

hCGTreatments announces a superior doctor-designed diet that works on many body systems and anticipates the bodys reaction to dieting in general. hCGTreatments incorporates the best diet plans that are clinically superior into a master diet plan that is doctor supervised and personalized for each dieter based on the health history, age, gender and lifestyle of each person. By personalizing a diet for every person, dieters can expect to lose up to 30 pounds without hunger or fatigue.

hCGTreatments also known as Diet Doc hCG Diet & Weight Loss announces a doctor- designed hCG diet plan that incorporates the best aspects of clinically superior diets into a master diet plan capable of shaving up to 30 pounds per month safely, without hunger or fatigue.

hCGTreatments medical director, Dr. Rao studies the effects dieting has on the body and certain individuals and anticipates the bodys response in advance. Losing weight is not a one-size-fits all reports Dr. Rao. For example, the #1 reason people do not lose weight once on the Diet Doc hCG Diet Plan is a severe sensitivity to sugar, including one simple piece of fruit per day. This can stall or slow down weight loss by as much as 50% reports Dr. Rao. In addition, after 30 days of dieting, the body will slow down its metabolic response (thyroid). This goes back to the body fighting off losing weight. We specialize in people who have previously failed on other diets reports Dr. Rao.

Understanding the complexities of dieting in general is what Diet Doc specializes in reports Julie Wright, president of Diet Doc hCG Diet Plan. hCGTreatments has added components of the best diets, such as: Paleo diet, Atkins diet, Gluten Free diet, Dr. Oz diet, or the Digest Diet or any diets that support eating organic, healthy food. This can include the Watermelon diet, ayurvedic diet, 7 day diet and portions of the original hcg diet (except, Diet Doc does not support any type of crash diet or starvation diets) reports Wright.

When a crash diet is used, the body literally shuts down and will hold onto weight. Muscle will be eaten verses abnormal fat reports Wright. Crash diets can be harmful to the dieters health as the body tries to compensate for too little calories (or fuel and nutrition) and cardiac problems can arise as a result. Its absolutely important to seek the advice of a trained diet doctor and not just any doctor. Weight loss is not something doctors learn in depth within medical school reports Wright. To understand weight loss fully, it takes a doctor two years of specialized training reports Wright.

hCGTreatments offers each dieter a comprehensive workbook outlining their personalized diet plan, along with 2 doctor consultations, a nurse consult and nutritional consult to teach them how to do the doctor-designed diet all within the first 30 days reports Wright.

hCGTreatments also created unique diet foods and diet recipes all without anything artificial, created specifically for rapid weight loss reports Wright. The diet foods and diet recipes are delicious and were created by top weight loss chefs reports Wright.

An example of some of the diet foods recommended are, chicken gumbo, steak soup, and chili, hot & sour and Thai chicken along with unlimited (low glycemic) vegetables reports Wright.

Over 500 diet recipes are provided to dieters along with unlimited clinical and weight loss coach support during their diet journey reports Wright.
