Group promotes personal growth through fitness

Getting back to basics and redefining the word play, is what coach Becky Bliss wants for San Antonio girls. From bicycle rodeos to Frisbee Frenzies, Bliss created GoPLAYGirls, focusing on sports, fitness and productive growth.

We want to redefine the word play to get girls active, because active girls develop into leaders and good characters, Bliss said.

And it is lowering the risk of teen pregnancy and dropout rates and that translates into good grades. There are so many connections about sports, fitness, and overall development in one's character.

GoPLAYgirls is a non-profit organization open to girls of all ages. To date, the group has partnered with San Antonio Parks and Recreation, YMCA, area schools, San Antonio Silver Stars, as well as coaches from the University of Texas at San Antonio and the University of the Incarnate Word.

An annual fee of $25 includes admission to events, camps, clinics, fitness fairs, mentoring programs and a T-shirt. Bliss hopes GoPLAYGirls will serve as a model for similar organizations in other cities.

Our focus is getting the most opportunities for girls because that is an underserved population. It is not being addressed. We need more people to get on board. The support is there, Bliss explained.

Maybe we can get more professional teams so the girls can have role models. We want to support what some people are already doing but by bringing new ideas to the plate. I would love to see it grow and see it as a U.S. organization, she added.

Bliss, a New York native with degrees in exercise physiology and kinesiology has an extensive background in physical education. She played softball in college and has overseen sport camps and clinics. She currently works with the animal welfare group Spay-Neuter-Inject-Protect San Antonio and offers private softball lessons, as well.

I grew up playing sports my entire life. When I moved to San Antonio five years ago, I was doing private lessons, but wasn't coaching collegiately and I saw the need, said Bliss.

I saw the issues the city is faced with the obesity, the non-participation and said I can do something to change that.

New Surprise gym aims to help fitness fanatics, novices alike

by Alyssa Lee - Sept. 14, 2012 08:59 AM The Republic | azcentral.com

Desired Physiques Fitness Center, a Surprise gym that wants to help fitness fanatics and exercise novices alike achieve their personal goals, will have a grand opening Saturday.

The event will be broadcast on 98 KUPD radio. There will be free food, beverages and prizes.

The club opened May 21 and management hopes the grand opening will attract more community attention. It has gained 1,100 active members since May, said Duane McGill, vice president of operations.

"Until now, membership has all come from word of mouth," McGill said.

Desired Physiques hopes to open 10 clubs in the Valley over the next five years, he said.

The gym's equipment includes treadmills and weight machines. Services offered include fitness classes, such as Zumba and kickboxing, which are included in the membership. The club also offers members on-site child care.

For people who want help with their fitness goals, Desired Physiques provides personal training and motivational coaching.

"On average, about 42 percent of people who join a gym quit within the first 30 days," McGill said. "After 90 days, 65 percent of people end up quitting. The bottom line is the novelty of getting in shape and the novelty of exercising starts wearing off in a very short time."

Gym member demographics have changed in the past 20 years, he said. The club has classes to help members from all walks of life stay "in the zone" about becoming fit, said McGill, whose background includes study in behavioral sciences and biology.

Manhattan fitness club owner: Emails prove co-founder's lawsuit is bogus

North County Times

Renee Linnell is suing business partner Billy Macagnone, saying his lothario ways tanked their fitness club.

The bad boy of a Manhattan fitness joint whos being sued for driving his business into the ground with his oversexed antics says his accusers just mad he dumped her.

Billy Macagnone, co-founder of Body Evolutions on E. 10th St., dished Friday on his ex, releasing emails that he says prove Renee Linnells lawsuit is bogus.

I was willing to give you everything. My body/My heart/My money/My life/My time/My energy. Everything.

And you chose Stephanie and TV and spinning instead, Linnell told Macagnone in an email filed in Manhattan Supreme Court.

Linnell, in a lawsuit filed last month, claims Macagnone ruined their fitness club business by sleeping with clients and then dumping them via Facebook.

Macagnones lawyer, Jeffrey Gold, said the intimate exchanges tell a different story.

In one email, Linnell is quoted writing: I threw myself at so many married men, I cheated, I used sex to get what I want . . . I really did honestly love you . . . thats all history.

Her attorney, Richard Cohen, said the newly filed emails are edited and incomplete.

Details: New Presidential Youth Fitness Program

Latest Exercise & Fitness News

By Jennifer Warner WebMD Health News

Reviewed by Hansa D. Bhargava, MD

Sept. 13, 2012 -- Goodbye percentile scores, hello "healthy fitness zone."

A new presidential youth fitness program is replacing the old presidential fitness test that most adults grew up with in physical education (PE) classes in school.

The updated program does away with comparing students' performances on athletic tasks like sit-ups and push-ups and then rating them on a percentile scale vs. their peers.

Instead, the new program measures students' health-related fitness based on what current research shows promotes good health and lowers the risk of disease.

"What is really apparent is that we have an obesity epidemic in our country, so we feel like we now need to focus on health versus athletic performance," says Shellie Pfohl, executive director of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition. She announced the new program this week.

Pfohl says that when the original presidential fitness test was developed almost 50 years ago, it was designed to measure children's athletic performance and abilities -- particularly in case they were called into military service.

"By design, the old test compared kids against each other, so by design 50% failed," Pfohl tells WebMD.

Celebrity Weight Loss After Divorce

It's not uncommon for celebrities to lose weight for movie roles, but they also tend to shed pounds for a more stressful reason -- divorce.

Both celebs and non-famous folks alike unintentionally find themselves on the "divorce diet" after a split, dropping weight from the sheer stress of untying the knot. Click through the slideshow below for celebs who lost weight after divorce, then weigh in: Did this happen to you?

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes called it quits in June 2012 after five years of marriage. Their divorce was finalized in record time -- less than two months after they announced their split. Since they parted ways, Cruise has reportedly dropped 15 pounds (photos here). As an unnamed source told gossip mag Grazia in August, "his way of dealing with this is to throw himself into his work, but as a result he's not looking after himself, and he risks cutting himself off from people who care about him and want to make sure he's OK."

LeAnn Rimes and Dean Sheremet, her husband of nearly eight years, separated in 2009 amid reports that Rimes was having an affair with her Lifetime movie co-star (and now-husband) Eddie Cibrian. The divorce was finalized in June 2010. Rimes was photographed looking noticeably thinner in March 2011. The singer opened up about her weight loss in October of that year, telling the Associated Press, "You know, I went through all I've gone through in the last few years and I was going through a divorce and I couldn't get out of bed, and so I gained 10 pounds and then I lost 10 pounds because now I'm moving around and I'm working and you know, I don't stop and no one sees that [weight loss] actually can happen like naturally. It's a natural progression of life."

Jennie Garth and Peter Facinelli parted ways in March 2012 after 11 years of marriage. After the split, Garth reportedly lost 20 pounds (photos here). "I've been certainly going through a transitional time in my life," she told Canada's Entertainment Tonight in August. "And I think anybody who has been through something like what I'm going through and have been going through for the past couple years, can definitely relate that your body changes with your emotional state of mind sometimes. I think a lot of women can relate to that."

Demi Moore filed for divorce from Ashton Kutcher in November 2011 after rumors of his infidelity surfaced. The pair married in 2005. As their union neared its final days, Moore reportedly dropped a ton of weight. By the spring of 2012, nutritionist and author of "The Hamptons Diet," Dr. Fred Pescatore, told Radar Online that he believed the 5'5'' actress weighed as little as 100 pounds.

After three years of marriage, Eva Longoria filed for divorce from NBA star Tony Parker in November 2010. The split was rumored to be a result of Parker's infidelity. In January 2012, Longoria opened up to Health magazine about her post-split weight loss: "I remember after my divorce, I was so thin and everyone kept saying how great I looked and it was probably the most unhealthy place I've ever been. So it was funny what people would see as 'healthy.' In my worst time, people were saying I've never looked better."

Diet Doc Joins the Fast-Growing Telehealth Network Using their Medical hCG Weight Loss Diet Program that is Proven to …

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) September 14, 2012

Diet Doc joins the fast-growing Telehealth Network using their medical hCG diet weight loss diet program that is proven to be effective according to studies.

Diet Doc makes weight management even easier by integrating telehealth program helping people across the country with the Diet Doc medical weight loss program.

Over the years, the obesity epidemic has been increasingly been known as the largest public health crisis in the U.S. One of the biggest problems in helping those who are overweight and on the road to obesity is accessibility to proper health care. Large corporations and even the government are now taking part in a new healthcare initiative called telehealth. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, telehealth is defined as the use of electronic information and telecommunications technologies to support long-distance clinical health care, patient and professional health-related education, public health and health administration. Technologies include videoconferencing, the internet, store-and-forward imaging, streaming media, and terrestrial and wireless communications. In other words, health services are now being offer over the phone or via internet applications.

Diet Doc is one of the first weight loss companies to join this new revolution in healthcare. Their team of doctors are now meeting with patients from across the country via skype and other internet applications for weight loss consultations. After a through evaluation, a nutritionist then creates a diet plan that is personalized for each patient. A weekly progress call, which takes the place of follow-up visits to the clinic, is made by a weight loss diet coach who is assigned to a patient. We found that our telehealth program for weight loss is even more effective than our in-person consultations because it saves people the time and effort to physically come into a clinic where wait times can be long. Our patients also feel that they get more personalized attention because our staff is more easily accessible over the phone or through e-mail, says Dr. Rao, Medical Director for Diet Doc.

Telehealth is currently on the rise and several studies are being conducted on its effectiveness. One study published by the U.S. National Library of Medicine found that subjects who took part in a traditional weight loss program, which met in-person with a dietician, and the telehealth group were just as effective. The only difference was that individuals in the telehealth group reported that their program was easier and more convenient that a traditional in-person weight loss program.

Diet Doc originally tested the concept of telehealth two years ago, offering weight loss consultations via Skype as well as in one of their 30 clinics. Since its recent recognition by the medical community and even the government as a means for healthcare, they decided to created an official medical telehealth weight loss program for their patients. Due to the growing success of our modified hCG diet, patients from various cities wanted to give our program a try but werent near one of our clinics. We decided to offer weight loss consultations over the phone and found that patients had the same success rate as those who went to the clinic. Now we are shifting our focus on the growing possibilities that teleheath has, says Julie Wright, Founder and CEO for Diet Doc. Theyve also created a comprehensive online health evaluation that gives symptom-based results and makes recommendations on which supplements will benefit the patient most. We are transitioning into a technology-based weight loss program that we find has little to no-room for human error. Our web-based health questionnaire as well as Skype weight loss consultations are a great way to get in touch with anyone, anywhere. We hope to be able to reach people across the world to help them achieve their weight goals and get to a healthy place, says Wright.
