Haworth Eagle Scout candidate issues fitness challenge

HAWORTH A 15-year-old local Boy Scout planned and excavated a new outdoor fitness park over the last several months for his Eagle Scout Service Project, and is planning on hosting a fitness challenge for its grand opening Oct. 13.

DANIELLE PARHIZKARAN/STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER

Haworth resident Jack Taylor talks about the fitness park he created and the upcoming challenge on Oct. 13 for the park's grand opening.

Jack Taylor, an Eagle Scout candidate and Haworth native, got the idea to build a fitness park for his community service project while training for football.

He broke ground in mid-April and installed seven pieces of fitness equipment over the summer.

"I figured there was really nothing around here where I could work out, so I decided to look into it more," said Taylor. "I found a lot of websites that sold fitness equipment and thought that it'd be a really good project if I did that."

Taylor worked with the Parks and Recreation Department to pick out an ideal location for his project.

Together, they chose a grassy area by the reservoir, located west of Maple Street and Lakeshore Drive, for the new park.

"It was just shrubs and overgrown area. It was basically just a trash zone, just a dump back there," said Taylor. "We had to go in on a Sunday morning and we borrowed my dad's friend's machine and we justpushed everything back to make [the ground] flat and just to clear everything out."

Despite being busy with football practice along with regular school studies, Taylor budgeted his schedule to fit time for his project.

Therasan LLC Announces New Brand Raspberry Ketone Pro

Therasan LLC has developed a premier blend of Natural weight loss supplements to create the ultimate weight loss supplement, Raspberry Ketone Pro.

Lindon, Utah (PRWEB) October 11, 2012

The product, called Raspberry Ketone Pro, is designed to shrink fat cells and burn fat without diet or exercise. A natural phenolic substance that is responsible for the scent and color of raspberries, ketones have been recognized as safe by the Food and Drug Administration. Studies have found that raspberry ketones effectively help the body to burn fat faster and target stubborn fatty areas in the body.

The announcement comes as many new companies are attempting to create fad diets to target individuals who are struggling to lose weight. However, studies show that attempting to lose weight with raspberry ketone products is safer than trend diets that severely restrict calories or carbohydrates. With Raspberry Ketone Pro, diet and exercise are not required in order to experience weight loss.

While a lot of people will add Raspberry Ketone Pro to their diet and exercise program, its not required that individuals exercise at all in order to lose weight with Raspberry Ketones according to some studies, says Therasan LLC owner Steve Stay. Raspberry Ketone Pro works with the body to target fat deposits and burn them quickly and effectively, making it easier to lose weight without plateaus and without instantly regaining the weight after the diet is over, because this product just doesnt work that way.

It should also be noted that Raspberry Ketone Pro contains African Mango extract, which was also mentioned by Dr. Oz as a powerful product that helped to target fat within the body. African Mango extract has been tested extensively, and has been found to significantly increase fat loss within the body. It has also been proven to have other important benefits, such as lowering blood pressure and helping to regulate blood sugar.

In more than one study, African Mango was found to specifically target stubborn fat deposits in the body, such as those in the thigh, stomach and buttock area. It was also found to slow digestion, which results in a more stable and regulated blood glucose content.

The benefits of Raspberry Ketone Pro can be found at http://raspberryketonepro.com, and individuals are invited to learn more about the product there, as well as the benefits available and more.

Study: Weight Watchers Works Better than Clinical Weight Loss Programs

Good news for people who do Weight Watchers: a study pitting the commercial weight-loss program against professionally directed weight loss treatments found that dieters stuck with Weight Watchers longer and were more likely to lose weight.

Researchers led by Angela Marinilli Pinto, an assistant professor of psychology at Baruch College in New York City, randomly assigned 141 overweight or obese men and women to one of three groups: a behavioral weight-loss treatment led by a health professional; Weight Watchers, whose weight-loss groups are led by peer counselors; or a hybrid program that started with 12 weeks of behavioral weight loss treatment, followed by 36 weeks of Weight Watchers. All programs lasted a total of 48 weeks.

(Q&A: Weight Watchers CEO on the Journey to Weight Loss Boss)

People in all three groups experienced significant weight loss: it didnt matter whether a health professional was running the treatment or not. On average, Weight Watchers users lost just over 13 lbs., compared with just under 12 lbs. for those who lasted all 48 weeks in the professionally led group, and nearly 8 lbs. for people in the combination treatment.

But the Weight Watchers group fared best overall. Nearly 37% of those doing Weight Watchers lost at least 10% of their starting weight, compared with 11% of those in the professionally led group and 15% of those in the hybrid group. The researchers said they were surprised, since they assumed the hybrid treatment would lead to the most success.

Further, the authors found, Weight Watchers members attended more meetings and were more likely to stick with the study to the end than people in the other two groups.

(MORE: Weight Watchers New Points: Zero for Fruits and Veggies)

The fact that a program like Weight Watchers can deliver clinically effective results is good news for overweight or obese Americans who may not have access to behavioral weight loss programs led by health care professionals, the authors noted. With almost 70% of American adults classified as overweight or obese, there is a need to provide practical treatment solutions that are effective, accessible, and affordable, said Pinto in a statement.

Many behavioral weight loss programs are run in academic medical facilities and can cost as much as $35 a week. Weight Watchers, on the other hand, costs only about $10 a week and the program is ubiquitous. Its the largest commercial weight loss program in the U.S., with approximately 1.3 million members who spend more than $5 billion on Weight Watchers products and services yearly and attend more than 45,000 meetings each week. In other words, its easy for dieters to find.

The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and published in the journal Obesity.

Competition helps man lose 25 percent of body weight

Greg Dantzler's first inkling that he needed to improve his physical condition was when he had bedtime prayers with his two children.

"I'd get up off my knees and I felt like I was 60," he said. He's 36. "It would take me a couple of minutes to walk that off."

The next was when his doctor threatened to start him on blood pressure medicine as his pressure spiked at times to nearly 150.

"I knew I had to do something; I wasn't ready to take medicine," he said.

He was 212 pounds and 5 feet 8 inches. His energy and activity levels were low, he said.

Around the first of this year, he looked around for a remedy and found a program called Lose to Win. The program is based on the concept that people can lose weight more efficiently when there's accountability.

"The best way to lose weight is to become part of a formal program in which you schedule regular weigh-ins," wrote Dr. Mario Morales, director of the SSM Weight-Loss Institute, for the program's materials. "Having that support helps you remain focused and committed to the behavioral changes that lead to real weight loss."

"I'm a competitive person and that was attractive," Dantzler said.

He signed up for the online program. He was among 1,200 people competing for prizes to be awarded to those who lost the highest percentage of their body weight.

The program didn't give him any methods to lose weight, although some classes were offered during the 12-week program.

Group Programs for Weight Loss May Work Best

By Kathleen Doheny HealthDay Reporter Latest Diet & Weight Management News

TUESDAY, Oct. 9 (HealthDay News) -- New research suggests that if you want to lose weight, don't try to do it alone.

"Group-based weight-loss treatment produced weight loss, whether delivered by a professional or peer counselor," said study author Angela Marinilli Pinto, assistant professor of psychology at Baruch College of the City University of New York. "When people are in a group with others on the same journey, they feel there is that element of, 'OK, this worked for him or her, perhaps it will work for me. Perhaps I can give it a try.'"

The research was published Oct. 9 in the journal Obesity.

Pinto and her team randomly assigned 141 overweight or obese men and women to one of three groups.

One group got 48 weeks of behavioral weight-loss treatment from a health professional.

A second group participated for 48 weeks in Weight Watchers, where the meetings are led by members who have achieved and maintained a healthy goal weight.

A third group got combined treatment. They first had 12 weeks of behavioral weight-loss treatment from a health professional, and then transitioned to 36 weeks of Weight Watchers participation.

Pinto said she chose Weight Watchers because it is the largest commercial program in the United States. It is also oriented to behavior change and included information on modifying the diet and increasing physical activity to lose weight and maintain the loss.

Pinto's team was testing the hypothesis that the combination approach would produce a bigger weight loss than going to Weight Watchers alone. Starting with the professionally trained leaders, she thought, would be a good jump start to the weight-loss program.

Healthy diets have long-lasting positive effects even with partial weight regain

Public release date: 10-Oct-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Contact: Andrew Lavin andrewlavin@alavin.com 516-944-4486 American Associates, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev

BEER-SHEVA, ISRAEL, October 11, 2012 -- Mediterranean and low-carbohydrate diets have lasting, healthy effects, even with partial weight regain, according to a follow-up study by researchers from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) and Israel's Nuclear Research Center.

The results were published in a peer-reviewed letter in the current New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) as an update to the landmark study, the workplace-based Dietary Intervention Randomized Controlled Trial (DIRECT), a tightly controlled 24-month dietary intervention.

According to Dr. Dan Schwarzfuchs from the Nuclear Research Center Negev in Dimona, Israel, "Our follow-up subsequent data shows lasting, positive effects of Mediterranean and low-carbohydrate diets six years later." The results suggest that the lipid profile (lower cholesterol, triglycerides and arteriosclerosis) improved for the long term, regardless of partial regain. "Data from trials comparing the effectiveness of weight-loss diets are frequently limited to the intervention period," explains BGU Prof. Iris Shai.

Overall six-year weight loss was significantly lower from baseline for Mediterranean and low-carbohydrate diets, but not for the low-fat group. In the four-year post-intervention, participants regained nearly six pounds. Total weight change for the entire six-year period was approximately -7 lbs. for the Mediterranean diet and -3.7 lbs. for the low-carbohydrate diet.

After four years post-intervention, more than two-thirds (67 percent) of the DIRECT participants had continued with their original assigned diet, 11 percent switched to another diet and 22 percent were not dieting at all.

The researchers also found that after six years, the HDL/LDL ratio remained significantly lower only in the low-carbohydrate diet. Triglyceride levels remained significantly lower in the Mediterranean and low-carbohydrate diets. Overall, total cholesterol levels remained persistently and significantly lower in all diet groups as compared to baseline.

In the original study, 322 moderately obese subjects were randomly assigned to one of three diets: low-fat; restricted-calorie; Mediterranean; or low-carbohydrate, non-restricted-calorie, and were provided color-labeled food per diet daily in the workplace cafeteria. The two-year adherence rate was 85 percent. The results suggested beneficial metabolic effects to low-carb and Mediterranean diets. Moreover, the researchers found a significant diet-induced regression in the carotid vessel wall volume across all diet groups. This change was mainly dependent on diet-induced reduction of blood pressure.

"This breakthrough, even years later, continues to yield valuable information that can help every one of us make healthier diet choices," says Doron Krakow, executive vice president of American Associates, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. "It is another example of BGU and Israeli researchers, thanks to generous funding by the Atkins foundation, improving the quality of our lives."

How expectations shape your life

Irving Kirsch, contributor

In Mind Over Mind, Chris Berdik makes a compelling case that what we assume or expect from the world changes how we experience it

ONE purpose of your brain is to anticipate events. You decide how to behave largely on the basis of the outcomes you expect, and these expectations alter your experience of yourself and of the world.

The ability to predict the future has survival value. Experimental psychologists have found that even animals like mice form expectations that guide their behaviour. Animals need to know what will happen next in order to survive. As the philosopher Daniel Dennett quipped in his book Consciousness Explained, the brain is an expectancy machine.

As a book about expectations, Mind Over Mind is an unexpected find. Although journalist Chris Berdik covers most of the usual topics, such as the famous placebo effect, he also delves into areas neglected in other books on the subject. Relegating the placebo effect in medicine to the final two chapters, Berdik begins by exploring the effects of anticipation in sport, obesity, gambling, food and beverage tastes, and economics. In the process, he uncovers some truly surprising phenomena.

In one study, for example, simply telling women who clean hotel rooms that their work was a form of exercise led them to lose weight, lowered their blood pressure, and changed their waist-to-hip ratio. In another study, the performance of cricket batters was improved by having them wear goggles that blurred their vision. This possibly turned the batters' attention away from unnecessary detail, allowing them to focus on the motion of the ball and more accurately anticipate where it would be a split second later.

Even in the area of medicine, where the placebo effect has been so well covered, Berdik comes up with more surprises. Placebo surgery, for example, in which doctors cut patients open and sew them back up without performing any actual surgical intervention, can not only duplicate the effects of real surgery in some circumstances - at times it can even outperform it. In a landmark study of arthroscopic knee surgery, patients given fake surgery had less pain and showed more improvement that those given the real surgery - an effect that lasted for a year.

Perhaps the most surprising findings reported by Berdik relate to unconscious processes. Expectancy is generally assumed to be a conscious phenomenon. We know what we expect. But Berdik shows that unconscious expectations can also influence behaviour, especially in sports, where people have to react quickly and conscious deliberation can get in the way. As he notes: "There simply isn't enough time to track a professional fastball, tennis serve, or hockey slapshot in flight, process that visual information, decide the appropriate action, and end the motor commands to the muscles." In these situations, predicting the future has to be an automatic process. Conscious thought is too slow.

Mind Over Mind is a fascinating account of the power of conscious and unconscious expectations to alter our experience and our behaviour. If you think you might enjoy it, your expectations won't be shattered.

hCGTreatments / Diet Doc hCG Diet & Weight Loss Plans Announces New Prescription Only Green Coffee Extract Diet Pills

hCGTreatments / Diet Doc hCG Diet and Weight Loss Plans announced their unique prescription green coffee extract weight loss pills. These prescription weight loss pills are the only prescription strength green coffee extract pills available, and are found to promote fast weight loss.

Dalas, TX (PRWEB) October 10, 2012

According to an epidemiological study conducted in Italy (http://www.biomedcentral.com/1472-6882/6/9/), coffee has the greatest antioxidant capacity among the most commonly consumed beverages. The effect of green coffee bean extract (GCBE) on fat accumulation and body weight in mice was assessed with the objective of investigating the effect of GCBE on mild obesity. The results suggest that caffeine is a suppressor of fat absorption. Green coffee bean extract is effective against weight gain and fat accumulation by inhibition of fat absorption and activation of fat metabolism in the liver, thereby resulting in effective and fast weight loss.

Recent research of green coffee extract was published in the Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity Journal. The exercise was a 22-week crossover study to examine the efficacy and safety of a commercial green coffee extract product at reducing weight and body mass in 16 overweight adults. This study shows that green coffee extract may be an effective nutraceutical in reducing weight in pre-obese adults, and may be an inexpensive means of preventing obesity in overweight adults. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22291473) The study concludes that one promising nutraceutical is green coffee extract, which contains high concentrations of chlorogenic acids that are known to influence glucose and fat metabolism apart from offering other health benefits.

With adult weight gain and obesity at epidemic proportions, the problems of cost as well as the potential side effects of prescription weight loss pills have led overweight adults to try anything that may aid fast weight loss. With affordable and effective prescription green coffee extract diet pills from Diet Doc Weight Loss, anyone who needs to lose weight fast can. When green coffee extract diet pills are combined with Diet Doc's personalized physician managed and doctor designed prescription hCG weight loss diet, the effectiveness of the total weight loss program is compounded exponentially.
