Exercise Improves Effects of Stroke: Study

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 3 (HealthDay News) -- People who have suffered a stroke can improve their memory, thinking, language and judgment problems by nearly 50 percent through exercise, according to a new Canadian study.

Researchers in Toronto said these positive effects can be recognized after just six months of physical activity, and they suggested that exercise should be a routine part of treatment following stroke.

"People who have cognitive deficits after stroke have a threefold risk of mortality, and they're more likely to be institutionalized," the study's lead researcher, Susan Marzolini, of the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, said in a news release from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. "If we can improve cognition through exercise, which also has many physical benefits, then this should become a standard of care for people following stroke."

The researchers had 41 stroke patients perform an aerobic and strength/resistance training program five days a week. Of these participants, 70 percent had mild to moderate walking problems and needed a cane or walker to get around. The exercises the patients were given imitated daily life, such as walking, lifting weights and doing squats.

The study revealed the proportion of stroke patients with at least mild cognitive impairment declined from 66 percent to 37 percent during the course of the six-month study. The researchers noted "significant improvements" in the patients' overall brain function. They added that the most notable improvements involved attention, concentration, planning and organizing. The participants also gained muscle strength and were able to walk better.

"These results provide compelling evidence that by improving cardiovascular fitness through aerobic exercise and increasing muscle mass with resistance training, people with stroke can improve brain health," said Marzolini. "Modified exercise programs are desperately needed. They can be adapted for people following stroke, and we think they can provide huge health benefits."

"Healthy living is important for reducing your risk for stroke, recovering from stroke and preventing another," Ian Joiner, director of stroke for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, said in the news release. "All of us should manage our risk factors for stroke and, when needed, have access to information and counseling about strategies to modify our lifestyle choices."

The study was presented Monday at the Canadian Stroke Congress. Data and conclusions presented at meetings should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

Water exercise boosts endurance in COPD

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Water workouts may trump land-based exercise for people with chronic lung disease and other health problems, according to a small study.

Australian researchers found that exercising in a pool boosted physical endurance and energy levels in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, and physical complaints such as obesity or back pain.

"Participants in the water-based exercise training group reported an improvement in many functional aspects of their daily life such as improved stamina and ability to complete tasks such as walking long distances when shopping," said Renae McNamara, a physical therapist at The Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick.

"They reported less fatigue, as well as less breathlessness when completing activities of daily living such as showering and dressing," she told Reuters Health by email.

COPD includes various lung diseases that cause breathlessness, such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis. About 65 million people have moderate to severe COPD, according to the World Health Organization.

There are drugs to quell symptoms of the disease, and exercise is recognized to improve the breathing problems and fatigue associated with the condition.

But many drop out of training programs, which can be particularly strenuous for people who also have other health issues. The new study, published in the European Respiratory Journal, is the first to test the benefits of exercise in this group of patients, McNamara said.

They enrolled 53 patients in the study, assigning them randomly to workouts in a hydrotherapy pool, gym-based training or standard medical care without exercise. The exercise programs include three weekly one-hour sessions over two months and 45 patients completed the study.

Whether they worked out on land or in water, patients were able walk faster after the training than when they just got usual care. But those who exercised in the pool reported less fatigue than the gym trainers and also developed more physical endurance.

On a test wherein they had to walk as far as they could at a constant speed, patients who'd exercised in water outpaced those trained in a gym by 228 meters (748 feet). Researchers consider a difference of 203 meters important.

HOUSTON There are plenty of smartphone apps and websites that claim theyll help you lose weight, but few turn the process into a social game where you compete against your friends.

Fitocracy launched in 2010 with just a few users, but now it has 400,000 thanks in part to its iPhone app. (Its makers say an Android version is on the way.)

You can sign up for Fitocracy, for free, using an e-mail address or you can link it directly to your Facebook account. Using the iPhone app, you can plan your fitness goals and track your daily workouts.

Each time you work out, you earn points, unlock achievements, andslay the laziness dragon. All of these points add up, because in the end, youre competing against whoever you choose to friend on the social network.

Obviously, this method isnt for everyone, since you may not want people to know how much you weigh or how much you work out. For some people, however, this is just the motivation they need. Many users even post somewhat revealing photos of their progress.

The good news is you dont have to have a smartphone to compete. Even just going to fitocracy.com you can track and share your workouts.

Losing weight through hypnotherapy

Action News

October 5, 2012 (WPVI) -- Anyone who wants to lose weight can choose from literally hundreds of plans and these days, many turn to surgery. But what if you just thought you had surgery?

Judy Seward thinks she's finally on the road to a healthy weight.

Her struggle is a familiar one.

"When I'm sad, when I'm happy, no matter what, I turn to food and that's not a good thing," Seward says.

Her cravings sent her straight to fast food, sweets, and salty treats.

Her weight loss efforts came and went, but never brought lasting results and those extra pounds have really taken a toll on her health.

"Having trouble walking, I have high blood pressure now, borderline high cholesterol, and diabetes is next," Seward said.

In April, 100 pounds over her healthy weight, Judy decided the solution to taking better care of her body was through her mind.

Instead of undergoing gastric bypass, as her doctor suggested, she signed up for a session with hypnotherapist Rena Greenberg.

The Fortune Society and Aetna Foundation Celebrate Food & Nutrition Program for Low-Income Families

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Harlem resident and mother, Barbara Biscaino, presented a live cooking demonstration today preparing her favorite healthy dish -- corn and cucumber salad -- in front of a live audience that included Manhattan Deputy Borough President Rose Pierre-Louis; JoAnne Page, President and CEO of The Fortune Society; Sharon Dalton, Vice President of the Aetna Foundation; and Harlem families. Biscaino learned how to prepare the dish as well as dozens of other healthy meals while participating in The Fortune Societys Food & Nutrition Program for Families & Children. The cooking demonstration, which was held at The Fortune Societys LEED-certified, affordable housing facility known as Castle Gardens, highlighted the success of the food and nutrition program.

In December 2011, with a $25,000 grant from the Aetna Foundation and a supplemental grant from the New York State Department of Healths Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP), The Fortune Society launched the Food & Nutrition Program for Families & Children. Since the program began, approximately 800 Fortune families and children, which include formerly incarcerated adults and residents of Fortunes housing facilities in Harlem, have attended a series of nutrition education workshops, including Taste and Texture and Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables. They also have participated in 35 cooking demonstrations, taking home bags of fresh produce after each one. The produce is provided by local suppliers Corbin Hill Road Farm and Brooklyn Grange Farm, which operates urban rooftop farms in Brooklyn and Queens. The two suppliers have distributed more than 4,500 pounds of fresh produce to Fortune clients and community members.

Since beginning the program, Biscaino and her daughter have learned how to convert their favorite foods into healthier alternatives; select, store and preserve fresh produce; prepare healthy, delicious and affordable meals; sanitize a kitchen; and write recipes.

Before enrolling in this program, my daughter and I would eat fast food three or four days a week, putting our health on the back burner. Now, our entire outlook on healthy eating has changed. Every day, we prepare and cook healthy meals together, making sure to include fresh fruit and vegetables into all of them. Because of this change, we both feel more energetic and will hopefully live longer. I have already lost a few pounds, said Biscaino.

Many of our Fortune families live on a tight budget, eating whatever food is most affordable and assuming healthy meals are too costly to prepare, said JoAnne Page, President and CEO of The Fortune Society. The Food & Nutrition Program shows our families that they can prepare healthy, affordable meals and equips them with recipes and culinary skills that will last a lifetime. We thank the Aetna Foundation and the NYS Department of Health Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program for supporting this program and helping our families make healthy eating a top priority in their daily lives.

In the upcoming year, the program will continue to offer regular cooking demonstrations and will increase the number of hands-on workshops so that more participants can learn by cooking during class. The class curriculum will have a greater focus on the participants needs, such as child and family nutrition, heart-healthy eating and diabetes education. The program also will include recipe selection workshops, nutrition-related activities and a field trip to one of the supplier farms.

Research shows that diets rich in fruits and vegetables can prevent obesity and its related diseases, which disproportionally affect low-income and minority populations, said Sharon Dalton, Vice President of the Aetna Foundation, who manages the Foundations regional grant-making program. By combining access to fresh, local produce with crucial nutrition education, The Fortune Societys program can have a positive impact on peoples long-term health and well-being.

Pitched against two hugely inspiring finalists, Craig Grant had some stiff competition. It is his forensic approach to every aspect of his poultry business, combined with a willingness to work with others to build knowledge and expertise, that marks him out as the winner.

Throw any question at him about his costs of production and he either knows the answer immediately - down to three decimal places in some instances - or can work it out in seconds.

He knows that when you are dealing with 40,000 free-range birds and supplying a major retailer that attention to detail and meticulous record keeping is what keeps you ahead of the game.

In just five years Craig has established a profitable poultry business on the 290ha arable and pig farm run by his father and uncle near Fraserburgh in Aberdeenshire.

He runs the family's two 12,000-bird houses on a self-employed basis and also operates his own 16,000 Big Dutchman multi-tier unit which he built in his own right after securing grant funding in 2010. All the houses utilise grain grown on the main farm. Eggs are sold to Morrisons through its local packing station, Farmlay Eggs.

After 10 years travelling the world as an engineer in the oil industry Craig has seen what life is like away from farming and it is evident that it shapes his whole approach.

He says it gave him confidence in working with different people from different cultures and an understanding of how business in general operates.

It means he places a strong emphasis on the need for good communication with his buyer and is constantly looking for opportunities to tweak his system so he can increase efficiency, drive down costs or improve bird welfare.

He is not someone who is afraid to try out new techniques - for example modifying the speed of his egg belts to cut collection times and working with contacts in the feed industry to trial new diets.

"Attention to small details make all the difference with regard to profit at the end of the day," he says. The results are there to be seen - Craig's birds are all laying eight to 10 eggs over target, which translates to extra profit.

Mediterranean Diet Tops List of 'Livable' Diets

By Denise Mann WebMD Health News

Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD

Oct. 3, 2012 -- "Drop 30 pounds in two months!"

We've all seen ads for miracle diets that promise to help us shed weight in days, weeks, or months.

But what happens next?

Do people stay the course and maintain the loss, or regain the weight with a vengeance?

A team of Israeli researchers followed participants for four years after an initial two-year workplace-based study to try and answer these questions. Participants followed one of three weight loss plans: a low-fat, low-calorie diet; a Mediterranean-style, low-calorie diet; or a low-carb eating plan without calorie restrictions.

Overall, the Mediterranean diet led to the most dramatic changes, but people on the other diets also did pretty well. A Mediterranean diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats like olive oil, and moderate amounts of alcohol. It is also low in sweets, meats, and saturated fats like butter.

Eighty-six percent of the participants were men, and most were considered moderately obese when the study began. Researchers also educated their spouses about the diet so changes could be made at home, too.

At two years, 85% of the participants were still following their diet programs. Participants on the Mediterranean diet and low-carb diet lost more weight than those on the low-fat diet.

Fat Loss Factor Review Commends Dr. Charles Livingston

Website's Fat Loss Factor review commending Dr. Charles Livingston on his breakthrough weight loss and cleansing program draws public attention to a much-needed fitness solution.

Charlotte, NC (PRWEB) October 04, 2012

Fat Loss Factor is a weight loss system which promises to help users slim down in as little as one week without going on a crash diet or spending hours killing themselves on cardio equipment. Instead, those following the system make use of time-saving high-intensity interval workouts (HIIT) and follow a diet designed to clear their bodies of toxins and quickly metabolize their fat stores.

Delmonico offers this insight about the validity of the program:

"Our Fat Loss Factor review found that this is one of the few weight loss systems that is truly geared towards helping people to not only burn fat, but also to keep that fat off long term, stay lean, and improve their overall health," says Delmonico. "Unlike these fad diets that are only concerned with short-term results Dr. Charles' program is attacking fat in a scientifically proven way that is gentle and nurturing to one's health."

While many dieters who have struggled for years and even decades to lose weight are throwing up their hands in desperation, many who have followed the Fat Loss Factor system claim the program is the first thing that has ever worked for them.

"One of the most attractive features of this program is the fact that it was made for busy people," says Delmonico. "The program takes users by the hand and shows them step-by-step how to cleanse their systems and start getting fast results."

Those seeking access to the Fat Loss Factor program can visit the official website here.

hCGTreatments / Diet Doc hCG Diet & Weight Loss Plans Announces New Studies Revealing More Weight Lost with the hCG …

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 05, 2012

An hCG diet from hCGTreatments / Diet Doc Weight Loss Plans is proven to produce the best weight loss results without gimmicks, patches, or food additives. What is used to enact fast weight loss with the hCG diet is simply a highly regimented and nutritious diet with prescription hCG.

What is Sensa? How does it work? How much weight can you lose? Sensa is a scent-based weight loss product that is designed to curb appetite through a person's sense of smell. Users are instructed to sprinkle Sensa products on food, wear aroma patches on their bodies, and even sniff Sensa SlimScents before meals. The Sensa weight loss system was developed by a medical doctor, Alan Hirsch who claims that his own clinical studies show that users of the Sensa weight loss system lost an average of 5.6 pounds over 6 months. The control group gained 1.1 pounds average over 6 months, concluding that Sensa produced an average overall improvement over the test group of -6.7 pounds over 6 months. Contrastingly, the hCG weight loss diet has been observed to produce weight loss at an average of 1 pound-per-day. These figures render the hCG weight loss diet 27 times more efficient at producing fast weight loss than the Sensa weight loss program. Nutritionist Katherine Zeratsky for the Mayo Clinic weighs in on SlimScents and the Aroma Patch stating that "The makers of Aroma Patch and SlimScents point to another study by Dr. Hirsh to bolster their claims. That study, which was reported in a medical journal, showed that volunteers who used an aroma inhaler lost an average of 2% of their body weight over six months." http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/sensa/AN02050 With nominal weight loss produced by the Sensa weight loss system, it seems that the best non-surgical weight loss is still found with an hCG diet.

How is hCG more efficient for weight loss? In response to the above findings, hCGTreatments / Diet Doc hCG Diets & Weight Loss Plans announces an improved hCG weight loss diet, clinically proven to produce average weight loss of a 30 pounds in 30 days, without scents, exercise, or patches. hCG triggers the hypothalamus to signal fat cells to give up their excess fat stores. But not only does hCG allow the body to release fat in trouble areas like underarms, hips, thighs, and midsection, hCG also ensures that the body does not burn muscle mass or structural fat during weight loss. Diet Doc Weight Loss will individually tailor a custom hCG weight loss diet to each client, by offering prescription hCG supplements coupled with a low calorie diet (up to 1250 calories daily). The effect is truly astounding. The hCG diet curbs appetite, preserves muscle mass, and sheds unsightly body fat at an amazing rate.

Diet Doc Weight Loss reminds consumers that hCG is a proven safe and healthy fast weight loss diet medication that has over 50 years of clearly documented results. Initially discovered by Dr. A.T.W. Simeons in the 1950's, the hCG diet has been proven safe for nearly everyone, and has a longstanding track record of producing fast weight loss safely and effectively. hCGTreatments / Diet Doc Weight Loss has vastly improved on the hCG diet and now offer a range of products and services to compliment and facilitate fast weight loss. While on hCG, dieters lose an average of one pound-per-day of stubborn body fat, safely and reliably. Dr. Rao, Medical Director for Diet Doc adds, We use a ketogenic diet that is considered to be a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet, similar to what athletes use. We found this to be the healthiest and most effective diet to use for fast weight loss results."
