Obese Dachshund takes on challenge of being Doxie version of ‘Biggest Loser’

When Portland resident Nora Vanatta agreed to foster an obese dog, she got more - about 40 pounds more, to be exact - than she bargained for.

A dog lover with a Dachshund and black Lab of her own, she follows Oregon Dachshund Rescue on Facebook.

The organization had posted a plea from a relative of the dog's previous owners, pleading for someone to help the five-year-old dog. The ownersare elderly and in failing health, and, Vanatta says, offered him food as a way to demonstrate love.

The EMT and Certified Nursing Assistant offered to foster the dog if there was a way he could get to her. A volunteer from Seattle transported Obie (whose previous name was AJ), and delivered him to Vanatta.

She wasnt expecting a 77-pound purebred Dachshund.

Turns out, Obie is one lucky dog. His new owner is equipped with a degree in animal science and eight years experience as a certified veterinary technician. Shes also an experienced dog owner and is ready to whip Obie gently into shape.

Vanatta is working with a Purina representative to feed Obie a low-fat, high-protein diet that also contains isoflavones, a natural bioactive compound designed to reduce oxidative stress in overweight dogs.

While hes unable to do any actual exercise just yet, Vanatta will introduce him to hydrotherapy and perhaps a treadmill. Since his bones and joints are under so much stress, shes waiting for him to slowly gain muscle mass as he begins to lose weight just by eating better.

She also points out that her two dogs are both fit and active and will serve as good role models.

Miraculously, despite Obies extra 40 pounds, he still received a clean bill of health. The dog is sweet, loving and a joy to work with, Vanatta says.

Want to lose weight? Do it for you

Self-motivation is the key to weight loss, with a new study showing that middle-aged women who eat healthily to keep others happy lose less weight.

The University of Otago set out to examine the link between the degree of autonomy and self-determination motivating women's eating behaviour and their body weight.

Researchers surveyed 1600 New Zealand women aged between 40 and 50 for the study, which the university says is the first nationwide research of its kind anywhere.

Participants were asked to rate different degrees of motivation for healthy eating - including determined or controlled. They were also asked about their specific food and eating habits.

Study co-author Caroline Horwath said the more determined and autonomous reasons for eating healthy including enjoying creating healthy meals or viewing eating healthy as part of a lifestyle.

"Controlled" motivation included reasons such as being nagged to eat healthy or feeling expected to do so.

After adjusting results for other potential explanatory factors, Horwath said it clearly showed that the more self-determined or autonomous a woman's style of motivation for eating healthily, the lower her body mass index (BMI).

"We found that every 10-unit increase in women's scores forautonomous motivation to eat healthily was associated with a 1.4kg lower body weight, which was equivalent to a 2 per cent lower BMI in a woman of average BMI in this sample."

The results suggest that even a modest decrease in controlled motivation could equate to nearly 1kg lower weight, Horwath said.

"As women in this age bracket are known to be at high risk of weight gain, this amount of weight loss could be important in reducing their risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease."

Commodities trader off to Mozambique

MONTICELLO A Monticello commodities trader left Saturday for two weeks in Mozambique.

While in the east African country, Jim Traub will work as a volunteer for CNFA to establish a small-scale soybean processing line there.

Traub doesn't know yet exactly what that will involve, but he believes soybeans can be used to improve the diets of people there.

"We can raise the protein in their diets with soybean powder," he said. "It's very simple. It will not take a lot of money."

Traub will be working with the Faculty of Agriculture, a university in the city of Cuamba in northeast Mozambique. The university has a 740-acre farm that grows mainly corn and has some livestock.

The university is interested in establishing a soybean processing line, and Traub will develop a feasibility study for income generation related to that.

He'll do that as a volunteer for CNFA, a nonprofit group formerly known as the Citizens Network for Foreign Affairs.

The group, which eventually adopted the acronym as its name, aims to bring economic growth to less-developed parts of the world through entrepreneurship and market development. Traub will be working in its Farmer to Farmer program.

Traub, 66, learned of the opportunity from a fraternity brother who took part in a similar program elsewhere. Traub applied to CNFA in May and was accepted in late June.

CNFA will cover his travel expenses and provide housing.

Is it OK to drink diet soda?

Scientific studies suggest you should probably lay off the sugar-packed Big Gulp.

But what about their zero-calorie counterparts?

There is this cultural lore that has people thinking that diet soda is whats really bad for you and that the other stuff (sugar-sweetened soda) isnt as bad, said Harold Goldstein of the California Center for Public Health Advocacy. Worries include that artificially sweetened drinks will cause cancer or diabetes.

Though most science dissuades drinking regular soda, diet sodas comparatively ambiguous research has not completely dispelled the lore.

Here are answers, some rather nuanced, to common questions about diet soda.

Is diet soda poisonous?

No, it wont poison you.

Most diet sodas are made with artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, which are several hundred times sweeter than real sugar or high-fructose corn syrup. Because not much of these are needed, a diet soda can get away with negligible calories.

Artificial sweeteners have probably been the most intensively studied food ingredient ever, said Richard Mattes, professor of foods and nutrition at Purdue University. Every panel has cleared them.

Does diet soda make me eat more?

Soy Diet May Lessen Anxiety Effect Of BPA On Genes

Featured Article Academic Journal Main Category: Nutrition / Diet Also Included In: Endocrinology;Biology / Biochemistry Article Date: 10 Sep 2012 - 3:00 PDT

Current ratings for: Soy Diet May Lessen Anxiety Effect Of BPA On Genes

These are the findings of an animal study led by researchers at North Carolina State University who write about their findings in a paper published online in the open access journal PLoS ONE on 5 September.

BPA is an organic industrial chemical that is controversial because it has hormone-like properties similar to those of estrogen. BPA is used to make a range of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins, and has been present in many hard plastic bottles and metal-based food and beverage cans since the 1960s.

Lead author Heather Patisaul, an associate professor of biology at NC State, told the media:

"We knew that BPA could cause anxiety in a variety of species, and wanted to begin to understand why and how that happens."

Two other groups of rats, one fed on soy-free, the other on a soy-rich diet, were not exposed to BPA, plus the fifth group was exposed to estrogen (ethinyl estradiol), and a soy-free diet.

Tests showed that the rats exposed to BPA had blood levels within the range found in humans. They also showed that those fed a soy diet had levels of genistein, an estrogen-like compound present in soy, within the range found in humans who follow a vegetarian diet and eat soy foods on a regular basis.

And, for the first time, the researchers found the raised anxiety was linked to changes in gene expression in the brain.

The gene expression changes were in a region of the brain that is known to play a part in influencing responses to fear and stress: the amygdala.

Diet Doc Creates Weight Loss Management Program for Patients with Hypothyroidism that Works to Increase Metabolism and …

Austin, TX (PRWEB) September 10, 2012

Diet Doc hCG Diet announces a new doctor designed weight loss management program for patients with hypothyroidism that works to increase metabolism and weight loss.

Diet Doc hCG Diet uses a hypothyroid diet that boosts energy levels and helps regulate metabolism. This diet is found to be beneficial for those with thyroid disease

Diet Doc has created a diet plan that benefits those who have the silent disease of hypothyroidism. This condition means that the thyroid, which controls the production of the thyroid hormone, is not producing enough hormone which will cause many of the bodys functions to slow down. According to the U.S. Department of Health, roughly 27 million people have thyroid disorders and about half have yet to receive their diagnosis. This could be the reason why many people talk about their metabolism slowing down and gaining weight as they get older. But with a recent spotlight on thyroid disease, there may be a solution to this growing problem.

The American Thyroid Association released a report on the connection between thyroid, body weight and metabolism. This butterfly-shaped gland located in the lower front of the neck is what regulates metabolism. When the thyroid is not producing enough hormone, everything slows down causing low energy levels, weight gain, mood swings, heavier periods, memory trouble and other limiting symptoms that seem to build on each other. With no reported cures for hypothyroidism to date, many who have this condition are in need of a proper diet that will help them avoid weight gain.

Diet Doc has created a hypothyroid diet plan specifically for their patients with disease. The diet is is rich with foods that are high in vitamins an minerals that are essential for those with a low thyroid and will increase metabolism. These include: seafood, sea vegetables, lean protein and berries that are high in iodine, selenium and zinc. They may also prescribe pharmaceutical strength supplements depending on the symptoms. An in-house team of medical professionals evaluate each patient and create a weight loss program tailored to them. Diet Doc's hCG hormonal treatment also plays a large role in weight loss which reportedly works to regulate the pituitary gland, the bodys master hormone regulator. The hCG hormone is also known to suppress the appetite, and, with their addition of pharmaceutical-grade vitamin b-12 to their hCG formula, will also add an extra boost of energy. The hCG diet, if properly monitored, can do a lot of wonders for people who are having trouble losing weight and we are the only company that offers a personalized, all-inclusive program that is also medically-supervised, say Julie Wright, Founder and CEO of Diet Doc.

Weight loss programs that focus on hormonal balance in order to achieve a healthy functioning metabolism are hard to come by. Diet Doc has created a program that has these ever-growing health conditions in mind. Our weight loss diet plan is also beneficial for those who want to take preventative health measures since weight gain and obesity are now tied to a number of diseases, says Wright.

US obesity epidemic propels fitness as career

The US obesity epidemic is pushing more Americans to pay attention to their health and leading a healthier lifestyle. Reuters pic

Employment of fitness trainers and instructors is expected to grow by a brisk 24 per cent in the decade to 2020, according to the US Bureau of Labour Statistics, as businesses, health professionals and insurance companies take sharper aim at the sedentary lifestyle.

The obesity epidemic has produced a lot of noise and talk and chatter, said Cedric Bryant, chief science officer of the American Council on Exercise (ACE), which has certified more than 50,000 fitness professionals.

Helping individuals be more active is important and fitness professionals can be at the centre of that, he said.

Obesity rates have skyrocketed in the last 20 years. More than one third of adults in the United States are obese, according to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

Bryant said the health crisis is strongly linked to the lifestyle choices that fitness professionals, such as personal trainers and group fitness instructors, address.

Despite the shaky economy, health club membership is up more than 10 per cent over the past three years, according to IHRSA, the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association.

Exercise physiologist and ACE spokesperson Jessica Matthews said workplace wellness campaigns also increase demand for fitness professionals.

Bryan said the average salary for a certified personal trainer is about US$53,000 (RM164,000) and rising. A high school diploma is sufficient to begin a career in fitness, he added, although more than two-thirds of professionals have college degrees.

Matthews said the industry attracts career changers driven by the downturn to reinvent their working selves.

Study Reveals Steering Clear of Treats Aids in Weight Loss

Out of sight, out of mind can more or less summarize a recent study reported by TODAY,which proves that those who lose weight may be those who manage to shut their senses from food.

Overcoming the sinful sounding hedonic hunger seems to be the key in effective weight management. Hedonic hunger is the sudden urge to eat which is triggered by the sight, sound, and smell of food. According to Patrick ONeil, a professor in the Medical University of South Carolina, keeping food out of reach can help dieting people avoid hedonic hunger. In a study sponsored by Weight Watchers, O'Neil and his team surveyed 111 obese men and women from ages 25 to 65, making them answer yes-or-no questions related to their reactions to the thought of food. ONeil found that those who consciously or unconsciously shun hedonic hunger were able to lose weight faster. Although it isnt clear which goes first--losing weight or losing hedonic hunger--it seems that living in an environment that promotes the right kind of diet may be the key in helping people shed unwanted inches. Keeping a food diary also helps in discovering eating patterns.

In the end, its all about a change of attitude. If youre having trouble with your waistline, or if your weight is actually hampering you from enjoying your life, then its important to be dedicated to your goal of losing those excess pounds. Try your best to not put yourself in situations that will cause you to eat food that you shouldnt be eating. Dont worry, once you start losing pounds, itll be easier to get motivated to keep on going.
