The 90s Animated Series CONAN: THE ADVENTURER Fueled Kids with Massive Amounts of Testosterone – GeekTyrant

Conan: The Adventurer the theme song alone and opening sequence for the 90s animated series was overflowing with masculinity and testosterone! After He-Man and Thundercats, this was the most testosterone-fueled cartoon series that a kid could watch in the 90s!

The series followed a young Cimmerian barbarian named Conan and his allies who "must stop snake-man wizard Wrath-Amon and his snake-men army from resurrecting evil serpent god Set. Conan must also destroy the evil wizard's ring that turned his family into stone.

The series was based on the iconic character created byRobert E. Howardin the 1930s. The series was created by Christy Marx, and it originally debuted on September 13th, 1992, and ran for 65 episodes. It came to a close on November 22, 1993. The series went on to spawn a small toy line in 1992 created byHasbro.

Heres a full detailed story summary for the series for those of you who want a little reminder:

Conan lived inCimmeriawith his parents throughout his childhood. While out with his grandfather one night on a trek, "fiery tears" or meteors dropped from the skies. Conan collected them and brought them back to his family. Conan's father, the village blacksmith, used the ore from the meteors to forge Star Metal and used it to create various tools and weapons that would never rust or break or dull. He sold them, but his finest work, a magnificent sword, he kept for Conan. It was laid in a crypt and covered over with a heavy stone slab. Conan's father told his son that only when he was "man enough" (i.e., strong enough) to push off the stone slab, could he rightfully claim the sword.

Meanwhile, the evilSerpent Manwizard Wrath-Amon learned of Star Metal and that in addition to its strength that it possessed the power to open portals between dimensions. He thus sought Star Metal to release his deitySetfrom "the Abyss" to which he long ago had been banished by the combined powers of virtually every living wizard then on Earth for trying to enslave the human race. As part of his search, Wrath-Amon sought out Conan's family. Conan's father told Wrath-Amon that he had sold all of the Star Metal, but the wizard refused to believe it. The wizard was right for aside from the sword, it was revealed in a later episode that Conan's father had hidden pieces of Star Metal with other villagers. Wrath-Amon used the spell of living stone upon Conan's family.

Conan by then had gone to claim his Star Metal sword to attack Wrath-Amon and his followers. When the Star Metal sword got near Wrath-Amon, it disrupted his magic and showed his reptilian face. To this, he said "Those who see the true face of Wrath-Amon must perish!" (this scene is similar to one in the film). Having chased away the wizard, Conan then turned to his family and swore in the name of their godCromto find a way of releasing them from the spell.

Conan's adventures thus begin as he searches Hyboria looking for a way to cure his family and free the land from Wrath-Amon's rule. Wrath-Amon's henchmen are alsoshapeshiftingSerpent Men. When Conan's Star Metal sword is close enough to them, it broke the spell that disguised them and revealed their true form to be Serpent Men. When Star Metal made contact with the Serpent Men, it banishes them to the Abyss with Set. Spies and agents of Set and Stygia, many of them also Serpent Men, were present in many cities, nations and tribes throughout the land in the age of Conan.

As compared with the original Conan stories and theMarvel Comicssuch asKing Conan,Conan Saga,Conan the BarbarianandConan the King, the cartoon Conan displays a higher degree of modern morality. While the original Conan is a thief, a killer, and a philanderer, the cartoon Conan has more in common with sword-wielding cartoon characters such asHe-Man. At one point, he refuses to join a pirate crew on the grounds that it is wrong to steal, he refuses to strike unarmed or defeated opponents. He is a kind and caring character, albeit a little naive, who stands up for his friends and what he sees to be right and is very respectable. The show also reduced the violence of the original to cartoon levels, deliberately making the Serpent Men "banished" with any touch of the heroes' weapons rather than actually struck.

The Snake Cult in the cartoon is different from The Snake Cult in the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian, which the cartoon is based on. In the film, The Snake Cult is led by the evil sorcerer Thulsa Doom, and in the film, Thulsa Doom and his warriors raid Conan's village and murder Conan's tribe including his parents. In the cartoon, The Snake Cult is led by Wrath-Amon, an evil wizard, and Wrath-Amon turns Conan's family into stone statues.

As someone who is a fan of Conan, I enjoyed watching the series as itlargely stayed true toRobert E. Howard's material. They just had to tone some things down for the kids. It was actually really fun, and I wish it would have gone on a little longer. Regardless, at least we got what we have!

Below youll fun the American opening title sequence for the series!

If you want to watch the series, its currently available on the free streaming service Tubi.

Everyone Else Is Dealing with COVID-19. Idahos Pushing an Anti-Trans Bill – VICE

Lindsay Hecox was looking forward to finally running track in college. Hecox, a 19-year-old freshman at Boise State University, ran cross country in high school and said it was the only place where she felt like she could be herself. In addition to describing herself as a shy introvert, Hecox has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, which made it difficult to make friends. Running provided her a shared experience to bond with her classmates.

Even though I definitely wasn't the most social, I still felt accepted, Hecox told VICE. I was a pretty good runner and everyone likes you if youre nice and you can run fast.

Hecox, who came out as transgender at the end of her senior year of high school, took the year off from running competitively to start transitioning and focus on her studies. Guidelines established by the NCAA state that trans female athletes must take medications that suppress their testosterone levels for a year before they are allowed to compete, and she started hormone replacement therapy last September. That means she could have been eligible for the 2020-2021 school year. (The NCAA told The Hill last month that it was monitoring the bills progress.)

If she had made the team, Hecox would have made history: No transgender student athlete has ever competed openly on a collegiate track team in Idaho. Hecox said she wasnt looking to break records, though. She just wanted to feel at home again.

Running really helps stabilize me, as I sometimes have mood fluctuations, Hecox said. If I go out for a run, it cleans the slate, and I feel like I can release a little bit of stress after that. If you have a friend and youre running alongside them, it feels like youre losing track of time and it gets your mind off things, as you just look forward to the next mile marker.

But Hecox could soon be banned from the sport she loves if Idaho signs a bill into law that would prohibit transgender women and girls from participating in school athletics in alignment with their gender identity. House Bill 500, also known as the Fairness in Womens Sports Act, applies to student-athletes playing in K-12 sports and at the collegiate level, no matter if the university is public or private. The legislation is headed to Gov. Brad Littles desk after passing the Idaho Senate last Monday by a 24-11 vote and the House last month, both of which are dominated by Republicans.

HB 500 isnt the only anti-trans bill awaiting the governors proverbial pen. Just days after the Senate overwhelmingly approved the trans sports ban, it also passed House Bill 509, which prevents transgender people from updating their birth certificates to match their lived gender. In a Thursday vote, all but six Senators approved the legislation, also called the Idaho Vital Statistics Act.

Little has yet to state whether he intends to support either of the two proposals, but when asked about them last month, the governor was quoted in the Idaho Press as saying hes not a big discrimination guy.

The bills have been met with virulent opposition from civil rights groups. Kathy Griesmyer, policy director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Idaho, said their passage would set a really dangerous precedent that would likely be used as a model for discriminating against transgender people in other states. Although the ACLU estimated that 17 states in the U.S. have introduced bills in the 2020 legislative session that would restrict the ability of trans students to compete in school sports, none have passed. HB 500 would be the first bill of its kind in the nation.

There are really devastating consequences if HB 500 becomes law, Griesmyer told VICE. This has the potential to harm intersex people, women who present too masculine, or anybody who wants to use this law to go after a competitor.

Among the most glaring issues with HB 500 is that it stipulates that a student athletes biological sex would have to be determined by one of three factors before they are allowed to compete. These options are a test of the individuals internal and external reproductive anatomy, normal endogenously produced levels of testosterone, or genetic makeup.

But as in the case of a similar bill introduced in Arizona, the legislation does not establish a process for bringing about these claims, meaning that any student or their parent could accuse an athlete on an opposing team of being transgender. Accused students, many of whom as likely to be cisgender, would thereby be forced to undergo costly DNA testing or an invasive genital exam. The proposal also does not state what body would be responsible for looking into complaints or how a students private medical information would be protected.

Notably, the Arizona bill was watered down to remove the genital testing components following public backlash. The Idaho legislation has remained unchanged, despite the concerns of LGBTQ advocacy groups.

This bill is not based on science, Kate Oakley, senior counsel for the Human Rights Campaign, told VICE. It is legislation that is based purely in misinformation about trans youth, and it is targeting trans youth for discriminatory treatment. For any trans person in Idaho, they are now on notice that their government is willing to make laws that are based on fear and not facts.

The anti-trans bills are likely to be met with immediate legal action should they be signed into law, as five former Idaho attorneys general argued in a March 17 letter addressed to Little. In particular, critics said HB 509, the birth certificate bill, would violate a court order from U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Candy W. Dale, who ruled in March 2018 that Idahos policy of denying birth certificate corrections on the basis of gender identity was unconstitutional. Prior to that time, Idaho was one of three statesalong with Ohio and Tennesseethat did not allow trans people to update their birth records.

When that policy was overturned in district court, Emilie Jackson-Edney was one of the first people in Idaho to apply for a corrected birth certificate. Jackson-Edney, who sits on the board of the Pride Foundation in Boise, said she had started her application process eight years earlier but that the long wait was worth it.

Its necessary to navigate safely through society with minimal harassment and minimal scrutiny, Jackson-Edney told VICE, noting that a third of trans people without a corrected birth certificate report experiencing mistreatment and even physical violence as a result. Its a safety issue. For trans people having concurrent identity documents that reflect their gender identity is really critical, and not being able to have them would be very difficult.

What makes these bills particularly hurtful for trans people in Idaho is the timing of the legislation. They were pushed through the state Senate during the same week that municipalities across the country took measures to curb the spread of coronavirus, also known as COVID-19. And yet in Idaho, little has been done to stop its citizens from contracting coronavirus.

I havent seen one thing from the [state] government other than telling us to wash our hands, and I honestly don't think that were taking it very seriously, said Yarit Rodriguez, who runs a support group for trans youth in Idaho, told VICE. He added that it doesn't make sense to him why passing anti-trans bills is more important than an outbreak affecting multiple communities.

The lack of statewide action on coronavirus is particularly personal for Hecox, who was being forced out of her dorm at Boise State as she spoke over the phone on Thursday. The university sent an email to students earlier the same day ordering anyone who hadnt already abandoned campus housing to evacuate the premises within the week. Although many students who have family in the area have the option to simply move back home, it wasnt so easy for her.

I was living with my grandparents in California before, she said. They don't want another person living with them because of their age. They are susceptible to having a bad reaction to the virus or dying.

To keep Hecox from being homeless, her mother is uprooting her life in California to move to Boise. Even as the federal government debates a trillion-dollar stimulus package that would provide greater assistance to families like hers, which have been forced into impossible situations, Hecox noted that Idaho lawmakers had yet to make any similar moves. The Senate wrapped for the year on Thursday, while the House finished up the following day.

They have not passed any legislation for that, she said of a statewide coronavirus relief effort. They dont have their priorities straight.

Females Live Longer Than MalesAmong Humans and Other Mammals, Too – Smithsonian.com

Women live longer than men by an average of six to eight years, according to the World Health Organization. This intriguing trend is seen in nearly every country around the world, suggesting that it may be driven by profound biological differences between the sexes. And longevity may not be limited to human females; according to a sweeping new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a range of female mammals live longer than their male counterparts, too.

Scientists have long assumed this to be true, but according to the study authors, the assumption was based on a small number of case studies on wild mammals, or records of mammals housed in captivity, where lifespan and aging patterns are often not representative of conspecifics in the wild. For the new report, the researchers compiled and analyzed demographic data from different types of studies, including mortality estimates that had been obtained from long-term monitoring of wild populations, and mortality rates obtained from dead animals collected in the field. In total, the teams analysis covered 134 populations and 101 species, including lions, orcas, reindeer, and squirrels.

Among 60 percent of the populations studied, females lived longer than males. On average, their lifespans were 18.6 percent longer, which is considerably higher than the advantage for female humans, who live on average 7.8 percent longer than their male counterparts.

But why do such discrepancies exist between the sexes? Scientists have long sought to answer this question as it pertains to humans, and complex behavioral differences likely come into play. Men, for instance, are more likely to smoke, drink excessively and be overweight, Perminder Sachdev, a professor of neuropsychiatry at the University of New South Wales in Australia who has studied human longevity, told Times Markham Heid last year. They are also less likely to seek medical help and to adhere to medical treatments.

Biological factors may also drive the survival gap. Testosterone, for instance, increases levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in men, putting them at greater risk of hypertension, stroke and heart disease.

Womens biology, on the other hand, may give them a boost. One theory posits that having two copies of the same sex chromosome confers protective benefits that govern longevity; women have two copies of the X chromosome, while men have X and Y chromosomes. Earlier this month, a study in Biology Letters gave credence to this hypothesis when it found a link between sex chromosomes and lifespan across more than 200 species. Female mammals, which have two of the same chromosomes, tended to live longer than males. The dual-chromosome trend applied to species that don't have X or Y chromosomes, too, and to species that in which males have two of the same chromosomes. For example, male birds, which have two Z chromosomes, have the survival advantage over females, which have one Z and one W chromosome.

The authors of the new study note that male mammals also devote substantial resources toward the growth and maintenance of secondary sexual traits, like larger body size or antlers. In certain environmental circumstances, these traits might come at a cost. When looking at bighorn sheep, for instance, the researchers found virtually no difference in lifespan between males and females in ranges where resources were consistently available. But in one location where winters are particularly harsh, there were significant sex differences in lifespan.

Male bighorn sheep use lots of resources towards sexual competition, towards the growth of a large body mass, Jean-Francois Lematre, first author of the new study, tells Matt McGrath of the BBC. [T]hey might be more sensitive to environmental conditions.

Both genetic variations and environmental conditions, in other words, likely play a role in sex differences in lifespan. Untangling these intertwined factors wont be easy, the study authors acknowledgebut further research, they write, will undoubtedly provide innovative insights into the evolutionary roots and physiology underlying aging in both sexes.

Know-How: Be Bossy With The Boss Hen – American Hunter

Have you ever noticed the more you raise your voice, the more your antagonist raises theirs? Before you know it youre in a face-to-face, chest-bumping standoff. That shouldnt be your goal at the local brewpub, but you can make it your goal during spring turkey season. You want to attract a tom blinded by testosterone, but to do that, it oftentimes hinges on ticking off the boss in an ever-increasing lead-up to a fight.

In most flocks, one hen leads the group with the boss-hen designation. She leads the flock after fly down. She starts a new course after feeding, and she steers everyone back to an evening roost. Shes the one in charge and the one you need to target in addition to the tom. Catch her attention and increase your odds of catching him.

Despite going up against the best in bossiness, you shouldnt begin this overbearingness at daybreak under the roost. This is a time of day when a little goes a long way. Soft yelps to direct a tom to the landing strip in front of you could seal the deal. Nevertheless, as limb chatter increases you can slowly match the tone of the lead hen. This gives the tom something to think about. Should I glide over to a sure thing or wait up here with a loudmouth? Your antagonistic approach could lead to notching a tag before sunrise.

Of course, your bullish attempt may cause the lead hen to fly another direction. No worries. Shut up, reconnoiter the possible next pit stop and circle ahead. Once you feel youre in the general area of where the flock is heading, consider switching calls to sound like a different hen. Then start again with a subliminal hello. If the hen responds you now have the green light to converse with a freelance approach. If she maintains a friendly demeanor theres no reason to ratchet up the rhetoric. You can, however, tempt her with the sounds of a more jovial crowd.

Employ multiple calls and mimic the chatter of a loitering flock. Soft yelps, clucks and purrs, plus the sound of scratching, could sway the hen your way. Tone your response accordingly and continue the watercooler chat. She may show up out of curiosity with the boys in tow. Of course, your happy home could also amplify her anger as the conversation continues. Stay ready to match her mood.

Lightweight and compact decoys are easy to haul into the field, and hens can be just as effective as a jake or tom.

Louder yelps and lengthy cadences from the matriarch signify your unappreciated presence from the boss. If you sense irritation, its time to once again turn up the volume and add a touch of arrogance to your answers. In addition to intensifying volume, consider interrupting her yelps and add in the excitement of cuts to the dialog.

Staking decoys ahead of your conversation starters provides a visual provocation. A lone hen decoy has plenty of power at the crack of dawn if your yearning yelps muster enough lust in a roosted tom. On subsequent setups, two hens in the presence of a tom or jake could charm a lustful longbeard watching from the sideline. It also could infuriate the boss hen into a fuming frenzy.

This spring, keep your attention on the tom prize, but keep a focus on the boss hen. If honey doesnt drag her your way, browbeat her into a chest-bumping brawl.

The Most Common Causes Of Hair Loss In Women And How To Treat Them – HuffPost

Hair often plays a critical role in forming a womans identity, so it should come as no surprise that female hair loss can have a major effect on self esteem, mood and confidence. It can even result in increased stress, anxiety and clinical depression, according to board certified dermatologist Anna Drosou of DermSurgery Associates in Houston, Texas.

Discussion around female hair loss pales in comparison to talk about male baldness, so we spoke with several experts who explained to us the most common causes of female hair loss and how to treat them.

As always, consult with your doctor before diagnosing yourself with any of the following causes or conditions.

First, Get To Understand Your Hair Cycle

Everyones healthy hair cycle follows a similar pattern: The active growth phase of hair (anagen) lasts 3-5 years, followed by a 10-day transitional period (catagen), and finally the telogen phase, in which the hair sheds and follicles fall out. The follicle is then inactive for three months before the whole cycle is repeated.

Some people experience hair loss at a pace thats more rapid than usual (telogen effluvium), which is a prolonged (and usually sudden) period of hair loss. Telogen effluvium is a reactive type of hair loss, caused by some sort of internal disruption, i.e. nutritional inadequacies, illness, surgery or hypo/hyperthyroid, Anabel Kingsley, a trichologist, associate member of The Institute of Trichologists and brand president at Philip Kingsley, told HuffPost.

SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY via Getty Images

Hair loss, thinning and similar issues occur when the normal hair cycle is disrupted, Kingsley explained. This can be due to a variety of reasons, some common for both women and men, others focused specifically on women. The American Academy of Dermatology defines normal hair loss as 50 to 100 strands a day, so anything more than your usual amount could be reason to see a doctor.

Drosou said that hair loss due to hormones, stress, iron and diet-related causes is generally reversible. Its harder to reverse hair loss connected with hereditary causes or rare inflammatory cases. Upon first seeing a patient, Kingsley first conducts blood tests to look at potential hormonal or nutritional deficiencies.

Hormones

Hormones can wreak havoc on our skin, and unfortunately that applies to our hair, too.

A balance of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone is necessary for healthy hair growth, according to Roy Stoller, a board certified surgeon and founder of Hair Transplant NYC.

Although estrogen usually promotes hair growth, when in excess, it can tip the balance and actually increase testosterone, causing a testosterone-related hair loss, Stoller told to HuffPost. In that case, there may be a genetic predisposition to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which attacks the hair follicle, diminishing and eventually resulting in total loss of the follicle.

Stoller provides a solution to this situation to block the conversion of testosterone to DHT and prolong the life of the hair follicle: The one most prescribed drug is Finasteride. Although only approved for men, women have also had success with it. This is a prescription-only drug, so speak to your doctor if you think it might be a good fit and ensure you know all the contra-indications, which include loss of libido among others.

Pregnancy Hormones

Its not uncommon for a pregnant woman to receive compliments on her hair, which appears fuller, shinier and overall more healthy during pregnancy. Though not every woman experiences this, for those who do its due to a prolonged anagen phase thanks to higher estrogen and progesterone hormones during pregnancy.

However, Stoller noted that 40% of women will experience excessive shedding (telogen effluvium) post-birth. This is due to the physical stress of the labor, and its self-resolving without treatment, Drosou said. Stoller added the effects are temporary, lasting around three to four months, and starting at three months post-birth. Being diligent with the intake of all necessary vitamins and minerals is helpful in dealing with this type of hair loss, and its completely reversible.

Menopause Hormones

Both before and during menopause, hormonal changes affect hair growth, particularly due to a decrease in estrogen and progesterone. Stoller said that female pattern hair loss is more common during that period, and could even relate to hair loss from androgens (male hormones) depending on the womans genetics. The decrease in the female hormones leave the hair cells unprotected from circulating androgens. Over time, the hair shafts will thin, miniaturize and eventually die, Stoller said.

Estrogens are hair friendly and help to keep strands in their growth phase, Kingsley explained. They also offer a sort of buffer against androgens, which are not very good for your scalp hair. The extent to which a woman will experience changes to hair diameter is down to genes, she added.

Studies have shown that Finasteride can be successful against hair loss in pre- and post-menopausal women who do not intend to be pregnant. There are suggestions that anti-androgen hormones can help, as well as iron supplements. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) can be beneficial in hair loss too, by slowing it down or stopping it completely, studies show. Another topical treatment that is proven to work in menopausal women is Minoxidil.

Thyroid Irregularities

The thyroid gland is responsible for regulating our metabolism, and its usually the first thing a doctor will look at if you have issues with weight changes or hair loss.

Thyroid hormones are released in the body at a steady steam, Stoller said, regulating everything from breathing to temperature, body weight and hair growth. Nutrition and thyroid disease can affect the release of those hormones, and Drosou notes that low thyroid hormones, also known as hypothyroidism, can cause reversible alopecia and even lateral eyebrow thinning. With proper medication to support the thyroid, the hair loss can be completely reversed.

Anemia

Anemia, or iron deficiency, is one of the most common causes of hair loss in women, apart from hormones.

Low iron stores can force hair into a chronic rest phase, resulting in increased shedding and reduced density, Stoller said. Drosou adds that iron deficiency is quite common if youve experienced sudden weight loss, and is often the result of going on a vegan diet.

Iron is used both for hair production and red blood cell production, Drosou said. The body wisely prioritizes the red blood cell production, so if it has a limited amount of iron intake, the first thing to be affected is the hair. Speak to your doctor, who will be able to give you a suitable iron/ferritin supplement depending on your needs.

Eating Disorders

These affect the body in various ways, creating physical stress for the body and often resulting in hair loss.

Stoller notes that the protein in hair (keratin) is not essential for the body, and at periods of malnourishment, hair growth will stop. The body prioritizes nutrients going to vital organs (brain, heart, lungs) over hair, so shedding occurs, Stoller said. Depending on a persons age, genetic makeup and health status, regular hair growth usually returns in about six months after the malnourished state is resolved, Stoller said.

Heredity

The hereditary form of alopecia is female pattern hair loss, or androgenetic alopecia, Drosou said. This is usually seen as diffused thinning, not bald spots.

She notes that this form of hair loss can happen at any point during adult life, and is more common in connection to menopause as its connected with androgen levels. Women with conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome, which is connected with androgen levels, could see hair thinning earlier.

Pongsak Tawansaeng / EyeEm via Getty Images

Medications that block androgens, like spironolactone, are somewhat effective at reducing hair loss and preventing worsening of the condition, Drosou said.

Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia

This is a type of hair loss that leaves scars at the front of a womans hairline, and its becoming more common, particularly in post-menopausal women. Kingsley said its now seen even in younger women, but the exact triggers arent known.

It is thought to be caused by a faulty immune response, whereby your body attacks and destroys hair follicles at the front of your hairline, leaving scar tissue behind, Kingsley said. Unfortunately, you cannot regrow hair from a scarring alopecia. However, at [hair] clinics we endeavor to stop it from progressing and reoccurring.

This is not to be confused with traction alopecia, a type of hair loss thats a result of wearing tight hairstyles, like ponytails or tight braids worn repeatedly that pull out the hair follicles. Kingsley said these hair styles should be avoided as they can cause traction breakage, which could pull out hairs from the follicle and then lead to traction alopecia over time. If treated early, the hair can grow back normally after six months. Otherwise, it could cause non-reversible scarring alopecia, which is often seen in women who use weaves, hair extensions, braids and chemical relaxation.

Insulin Imbalance

Insulin is a hormone that regulates energy. Its obtained from the food we eat, and then released into the body to help store energy for future use. Since insulin can affect hair growth, its important to take note of the glycemic index (GI) a ranking of how foods affect your blood glucose levels of foods you eat.

Eating high-glycemic foods in excess, often in combination with a sedentary lifestyle, can cause an overload of insulin in the body, Stoller said. Too much insulin disrupts ovulation and signals the ovaries to make more testosterone, Stoller said. A change in diet and lifestyle can help insulin levels and restore hair growth.

Stress

We know stress can be catastrophic for the body and the mind, so its no surprise that stress plays a major role when it comes to hair loss.

Kingsley notes that anything that affects your physical well-being impacts your hair to an even greater degree. Hair is non-essential to physical survival and so it will always be the first part of you to suffer when something is off-kilter, he said.

Stress is connected to our cortisol levels, which are increased, Stoller said, when insulin levels rise, in turn triggering a testosterone increase. After a particularly stressful event, and 2-4 months after the event, women may experience hair loss, but after 6-plus months hair returns to normal, Stoller added.

Drosou notes that stress-related hair loss is also seen after events like childbirth, hospitalization, divorce and the death of a significant other. The reason is that stress induces a larger percentage of follicles to enter the telogen phase, resulting in increased shedding of hair. The hair follicles remain intact, so complete recovery is expected after 6-12 months, Drosou said.

The Takeaway

No matter what the underlying cause of hair loss might be, as with many health issues, a balanced diet with the necessary nutrients and vitamins is essential.

Hair is the first point of damage when something is out of balance in our bodies, as its a non-essential tissue or a vital organ. But as hair cells are the second-fastest growing cells our body makes (the fastest-growing are the cells lining the gastrointestinal tract), their nutritional requirements are high, Kingsley said. Supplements can be helpful in the support of good hair health, in conjunction with a healthy balanced diet. Looking after the scalp and cleaning it properly is also important to support healthy hair growth, as well.

As soon as you notice an increase in hair loss, its important to take action and see a dermatologist, trichologist or specialist. Every situation is very different, so seeing an expert is essential.

Stream On: At home and abroad, after 9/11 – The Outer Banks Voice

By Peter Hummers on March 19, 2020

The attacks on America on Sept. 11, 2001 changed everything, including TV drama. From a New York City fire station to Washington, Yemen and Venezuela, these two television dramas arose to deal with their aftermath and responses.

RESCUE ME (Hulu; on-demand on several other platforms) 2004-2011 [TVMA]

This 2004 FX series focuses on New York firefighter Tommy Gavins (Denis Leary) family and the men of his firehouse. Tommy is an impatient, self-loathing, hypocritical, manipulative relapsed alcoholic who suffers with severe survivor guilt and post-traumatic stress as a result of 9/11. He blames himself for his firefighter cousins death in the twin towers, while entering into an affair with his cousins widow.

Tommys cousin, indeed, a small group of the dead that he blames himself for, follow him around, firefighters and chidren, with whom he seems to be in onging communication.

A comedy-drama, Rescue Me is both personal and blunt, while the comedy ranges from guy stuff (the station house is teeming with testosterone) to the blackest situations that find laughs even in death and devastation among the major cast. Recurring guests on this popular show included Maura Tierney, Artie Lange, Susan Sarandon, Marisa Tomei and Michael J. Fox.

The series premiere garnered Denis Leary and Peter Tolan (Analyze This) an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series. Tolan also received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series. Leary received another Emmy nomination the next year, this time for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Heres a trailer for the Season 1 DVD set.

TOM CLANCYS JACK RYAN (Prime Video; Season 1 on-demand on several other platforms) 2018 [TVMA]

Carlton Cuse (Bates Motel) and writer Graham Roland (Lost, Fringe) are the latest to take on Tom Clancys creation Dr. Jack Ryan, the CIA analyst who first appeared in the 1984 novel The Hunt for Red October and has since, like Sherlock Holmes and Norman Bates, transcended time. Ryan has been portrayed by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine; in this 2018 Amazon Prime original series, John Krasinski (The Office) dons the mantle.

Here, Ryan is younger than in the Harrison Ford films and not married, although this series takes place in the present. The first season follows him as he is wrenched from the security of his desk job into the field after discovering a string of dubious bank transfers, which are being carried out by a rising Islamic extremist named Suleiman.

Ryans commanding officer at the Terror, Finance, and Arms Division (T-FAD) of the CIA, James Greer (Wendell Pierce, The Wire), snatches Ryan from a party to Yemen to interrogate the man assumed to be responsible and his bodyguard, when the base where they are is attacked by rebels.

Director and Executive Producer Daniel Sackheim has said, What was so great about the Harrison Ford movies was that they were about an everyman hero. He was a guy who wasnt a superhero. He was heroic, but he was vulnerable. He wasnt afraid to be scared. He was a regular man and a hero (IndieWire), and Krasinski, best known as office drone Jim Halpert, fits the part like a glove.

The terrorist Suleiman is given personal motives that transcend politics and so is relatable to any audience. The plots are intriguing and solid and the action set-pieces are flashy while apparently realistic. The Suleiman plot wraps up with the first season, and the second season opens in Venezuela. Heres a trailer for the first season.

Next time, well go back in the day with young Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne. Email me and follow Stream On OBX on Twitter.

Woman who tried to be male accuses doctor of lying about transition impact – Lifesite

BELGIUM, March 13, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) A 21-year-old woman from Belgium who portrayed herself as a male, then reverted to presenting herself according to hertrue sex is speaking out about the deception of the doctor who encouraged her to go through with hormone drugs and mutilating surgeryand the lack of countervailing voices that could have spared her the experience.

This week, the BBC published an interview with Ellie and her 24-year-old paramour Nele, who is also a former trans man. Both subjected themselves to testosterone as well as double mastectomies.

I realised I was doing a lot of boy things, and some people werent fine with that especially other kids, Ellie recalls of her childhood. In her teens, she came out as a lesbianand decided, I just didnt want to be a woman. I wanted to be neutral and do whatever I wanted.

She began to seek out male hormones at age 16 after seeing YouTube videos on the subject. The first doctor she and her parents consulted suggested waiting until she was older, so she found a second one who told her what she wanted to hear. A year later, she had her breasts removed.

He told my parents that all the effects [of hormones] were reversible which is the biggest lie, Ellie recalls. I had done my research, and I knew that this doctor could not be trusted. But I was just so happy that he said that, because then my parents were OK with it.

Her father Eric recalls having reservationsbut feeling reassured by the doctor that this was for the best. I wouldve liked to have met someone to give me the words and find arguments to make her wait and think about it longer, but there was no-one, he admits.

As a university student in Germany, Ellie initially enjoyed living as and passing for a man, but eventually, she started to feel like I had to hide so many aspects of my life, and not talk about my childhood as a girl. I didnt feel comfortable being seen as a cis man, and I started to feel like I didnt fit in anywhere.

These issues made dating a challenge, but eventually she met Nele, and the two bonded over their shared issues. Nele too had grown up uncomfortable with her sex, had taken transgender hormones, and with Ellies support had her own double mastectomy.

Yet personal and ideological factors both continued to cast doubts on their male identities. The ongoing debate between transgender activists and traditional feminists had Ellie questioning if she was truly transgendered or if her change was just a way I found to go through life, while she and Nele were both diagnosed with vaginal atrophy, a side-effect of testosterone.

Isnt it worth trying to go natural for a bit, and just see how it goes? Nele thought, and Ellie agreed.

Today, the two maintain the website Post-Trans.com, a space for female detransitioners and desisters to share their journeys.

Detransitioning for me means to stop denying the female experience I have, Ellie writes. Detransitioning for me means taking agency over my dysphoria. Detransitioning for me means discovering the body I started altering since the age of 16 and finally working on accepting it exactly the way it is. Detransitioning for me does not mean trying to go back to my insecure 16-year-old self, but to move forward and become the strong female individual I want to be.

Nele says that despite her experiences and ultimate decision to reverse it, she doesnt regret her initial transition. She credits transition as the only alternative to suicide she saw at the timebut acknowledges that it also brought me to a place of reflection on why I really transitioned, which eventually ended with her resolving to face the bad image of women that society taught me and embrace a new and stronger one.

A range of medical literature suggests that exposing gender-confused children to transition treatment is harmful in the long run, in no small part because fixating on gender affirmation tends to distract from exploring other issues that may be at the root of a patients mental or emotional unrest.

In 2017, the University of Cambridges Stonewall report found that 96 percent of trans students in Scotland attempted self-harm through actions such as cutting themselves, and 40 percent attempted suicide. Forty percent in the United States have attempted suicide, as well, according to a 2016 survey from the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE). According to a 2011 study out of Sweden, trans people remain 19 times more likely to commit suicide than the general population, even after surgery to reconstruct their bodies.
