Anytime Fitness Announces New Master Franchise Agreement For India

HASTINGS, Minn. and NEW DELHI, June 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Anytime Fitness, the world's largest co-ed chain of health clubs, has signed a master franchise agreement for India with New Delhi-based House of Fitness Pvt. Ltd.

"We are extremely enthusiastic about the growth potential for Anytime Fitness in India," states John Kersh, Vice President of International Development for Anytime Fitness. "Our Indian associates from House of Fitness are well-respected and they have a solid combination of fitness industry experience and business acumen which, we are sure, will contribute to strong performance of the brand."

According to statistics from the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association's 2012 Global Report on the State of the Health Club Industry, less than one tenth of one percent of the Indian population are members of health clubs. This figure is in sharp contrast to the United States, where over 17% of the total population are health club members, and to Europe, where more than 10% of the population are members in the majority of countries.

"Indians are becoming increasingly health conscious and the Anytime Fitness concept provides a perfect solution for busy people looking for a comfortable and convenient facility in which to exercise," stated Vishal Kwatra, COO of House of Fitness.

The recently-concluded agreement follows a master franchise format, in which House of Fitness will develop their own Anytime Fitness gyms, sell sub-franchises and provide on-going support to franchisees, and will promote and market the brand in India. Anytime Fitness will, in turn, provide exclusive rights to House of Fitness for use of the brand's trademarks, systems and intellectual property during the term of the agreement, and will support the master franchisee via its corporate headquarters in the United States.

This is the second foray into the Indian market for Anytime Fitness. Four Anytime Fitness clubs had been opened under a prior master franchise agreement with a different company, but that relationship terminated following that master franchisee's failure to comply with the terms of its master franchise agreement."

Planet Fitness gets pumped up for IPO

The unconventional but fast-growing Planet Fitness gym chain is looking to hire bankers before going public, The Post has learned.

The Newington, NH, company, with more than 500 locations including 20 in the city offers some of the lowest membership fees in the sector, with plans costing up to only $20 a month, with no contracts and very limited service.

Company revenue was $157 million in 2012, according to an industry estimate.

The idea is to sign up a huge number of members 7,000 per location since they will come in only once a week as opposed to the twice a week average for more conventional gyms that offer superior service for much higher prices, industry consultant John Atwood said.

While offering decent equipment, it spends less than 25 percent of expenses on personnel, while competitors are paying more than 40 percent.

As a result, Planet Fitness has operating profit margins of about 25 percent. Atwood said the industry norm is around 10 percent.

The stagnant economy is pumping up the chain and its low-cost recipe.

Atwood said the question for underwriters is how sustainable the business model actually is.

Inc. magazine put Planet Fitness on its list of the 5,000 fastest-growing companies based on the gyms 216 percentage revenue growth from 2007 to 2010.

The chain has also gotten a marketing boost by being the featured gym on NBCs The Biggest Loser.

Andy Murray says his fitness levels are fine heading into the Aegon Championships at Queen's Club.

The Scot, recently troubled by two separate back problems, begins his title defence against Nicolas Mahut or Guillermo Garcia-Lopez on Wednesday.

"I feel much better," Murray told BBC Sport. "The grass will probably be good for me. I've had a few good days practice here and it all feels good."

Britons James Ward, Jamie Baker, Oliver Golding and Liam Broady play on Monday.

All four have received wildcards, with Broady making his main tour debut in the second match on Court One against 14th seed Gilles Muller of Luxembourg.

Baker faces 18-year-old US Open junior champion Golding, awarded a place in the draw for a second successive year, in the fourth match on Court Two.

The winner will face second seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who lost to Murray in last year's final.

The fifth match on Centre Court sees British number two Ward meet big-serving ninth seed Kevin Anderson of South Africa.

Knoxville company's fitness equipment supplies pro teams, military

By KRISTIN FARLEY 6 News Anchor/Reporter

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - What do the Cleveland Browns, the Nashville Predators and the U.S. military all have in common? They use fitness equipment made in Knoxville.

Legend Fitness, at 5901 Middlebrook Pike, makes commercial grade equipment that's not just in the best fitness facilities in Tennessee and across the U.S. It's around the world.

Pierre Steenekamp is the president of Legend Fitness and part of the business group that bought out Legend three years ago.

At the time the company was in Maynardville, but this spring it moved to Knoxville after some tremendous growth.

The company has grown from a handful of employees to more than 60 who are often asked to work overtime to keep up with orders. While they help in the design phase, their main focus is manufacturing the strength equipment.

It's all done at one location, from cutting and welding each element to giving each piece a special powder coated finish. After curing in a giant oven-like room, a shiny, durable piece is the result.

"We're a heavy duty commercial product. We're not so much about how pretty it looks. We're more about how functional it is. It's very strong and very sturdy," Steenekamp explained.

However, Legend also offers custom colors, logos, even upholstery. All of that is very important when you look at the client list.

"We shipped products in to the Redskins and the 49'ers. We do a fair amount of equipment for the Tennessee Titans, obviously," Steenekamp said.

Cole fitness takes centre stage

Ashley Cole's fitness will be the subject of most interest when England throw open their doors to training on Friday morning in a further attempt to prove themselves "good tourists" at Euro 2012.

Stung by criticism of their stand-offishness in South Africa two years ago, the Football Association have taken a number of measures to ensure such accusations will not be repeated about their time in Poland and Ukraine.

On Thursday night they attended a civic reception, completing the short journey from their city centre hotel on foot, and on Friday it will be a fully open training session before the squad splits, with Wayne Rooney and Joe Hart amongst those to visit Auschwitz and Steven Gerrard leading a trip to Oskar Schindler's factory in Krakow.

Yet despite the significance of those visits, it is England's Group D opener with France in Donetsk on Monday that remains most important.

Therefore, Cole's absence from Thursday night's reception was noted, with the FA, who were originally unaware the defender was missing, claiming simply that he was "resting" in his room.

However, there have been suggestions Cole missed training on Thursday with a stomach bug, even though the FA said everyone took part in a closed-doors session.

Should he be absent on Friday morning, it could mean yet another headache for manager Roy Hodgson, who may have to use Leighton Baines against the French.

Meanwhile, Hart has stressed the importance of the visit to Auschwitz after revealing his father convinced him to see the former Nazi death camp.

The goalkeeper said: "Ever since Krakow was chosen as the venue, he said, 'You need to go and do this, go and see, experience it'.

"It's hard. I'm not being sick or perverse. You need to see these things to appreciate them. It's talked about and you hear people chuck words like 'Holocaust'. You need to know what they are. It gives you more of a feeling of the history of this world."

New DVD Showcases Fitness Activities That Improve Socialization Skills For Children With Autism

WILLOWBROOK, Ill., June 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --More than half of the nation's children with autism are overweight, at risk for diabetes or cardiovascular disease, have bone and joint problems or suffer from depression, anxiety and gastrointestinal problems. That alarming statistic was the impetus for a new exercise video for children with autism, hosted by nationally recognized fitness expert SuzanneGray.

Gray, who is CEO of Right Fit Sports Fitness Wellness, Willowbrook, has spent more than 30 years developing fitness programs for children with special needs. Over time, she has seen how exercise works in addressing obesity, improving motor skills and muscle tone, eliminating self-destructive and self-stimulating behaviors and enhancing socialization skills for children with autism. The DVD, entitled, Raising the Bar: Fitness & Movement Exercises for Youth and Adults with Autism, was produced by Healthy Learning and is now available to order online at http://www.Amazon.com, http://www.Right-Fit.com and http://www.healthylearning.com.

The specific developmental exercises and movement activities featured in the DVD are included in Suzanne's innovative "Raise the Bar" program, which are included in the book 101 Games and Activities for Youth with Autism. Her program received the Club Industry "Best of the Best Award" in the category of "Best Children's Fitness Program."

"The DVD demonstrates specific exercises parents and teachers can do with their children every day," says Gray. "A structured routine is essential to improving the muscular imbalances and compensations, deficient motor skills, poor posture and other fitness pitfalls common among youth with autism. When you combine a fitness program with music and play, it enhances the way a child with autism responds to sensory information and it will boost independence, happiness and self-esteem."

ABOUT SUZANNE M. GRAY

Gray's programs have been implemented by community centers, schools, and park districts across the country. They have been deployed at the nationally recognized Argonne National Laboratory and with several private and not-for-profit organizations, such as Charlie's Gift, Hinsdale, IL; and Turning Pointe Autism Foundation, Naperville, IL. These organizations/schools support and bring awareness to special needs children who struggle with various issues, such as socialization, motor skills and obesity.
