Fitness magazines take different approaches to motivate men, women

I'm one of those women who likes reading men's health and fitness magazines. Though they all promise bodies and sex lives that most of us will never have, I'm drawn to the funny, self-deprecating tone, the functional workout tips and the emphasis on sweat, competition and strength training.

Yes, women's magazines have these elements but on a vastly diminished scale. They're fluffier, in part because beauty products and clothes are considered health-related, but also because women are still plagued by the irrational fear of "bulking up."

We won't get huge without added testosterone, but some magazines still perpetuate the notion that men should build insanely huge muscles and women need to lose fat.

A recent Muscle & Fitness magazine cover, for example, promised "75 of the Best Muscle Building Exercises."

By contrast, Muscle & Fitness Hers, the female counterpart to the bodybuilder mag, featured thinspiration, including "The Skinny on Fat Loss" and "The Best Natural Appetite Suppressants."

The majority of advertisements touted fat-burning supplements, stimulants and weight loss products.

Men's Health and Women's Health magazines have plenty of overlapping content.

Both recognize that both genders compete in marathons and triathlons, want great abs in 15 minutes and need nutritional guidance. But the editors use considerably different voices to reach their male and female readers.

"For Women's Health, it's a confiding, challenging, sisterly thing -- equal parts encouragement, sympathy and advice. It comes from a place of 'just us girls,'" said David Zinczenko, editor-in-chief of Men's Health and editorial director of Women's Health.

"Guys tend to be a bit more bracing with their counsel, with a healthy dose of humor -- plus self-denigration -- thrown into the mix," Zinczenko added. "First we laugh at ourselves, then we laugh at you, then we deliver the goods straight up, with an expert chaser."

Player fitness in the playoffs

As intensity rises during the playoffs, players with the highest fitness levels will have the best performance and recovery process. The higher their fitness levels, the better their chances of exhausting the opponent and winning.

We all have a general idea of what a good fitness level is: pushing harder than the opponent and leaving him behind without exhausting yourself. But how can this be explained physiologically?

The table below presents the on-ice testing results of three different hockey players. I will use these results to explain their different performance levels. First, I want to emphasize that hockey players are neither cyclists nor runners and that their physiological reactions are very different. So, even if you conduct the same kinds of tests with runners, cyclists and hockey players, the patterns on the ice are very different from those you would see on a bike or treadmill. In my opinion, hockey is the most physiologically complex of all sports and this is why we see such unusual results.

Lets start with some definitions. The anaerobic threshold (AT) is the power at which a player begins to produce blood lactate. Below this level, he could skate for hours. But, as you know, hockey players rarely skate for long periods because of the high intensity of the game. Above the anaerobic threshold and below the maximal lactate steady state (MLSS), the body reuses blood lactate to produce energy. So, when a player skates at a power level between these two margins (AT- MLSS), the player can skate for a few minutes. The maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) is the point at which the body starts building up blood lactate, so keeping the pace above this threshold will inevitably lead to exhaustion. The closer a player skates to his maximal power (MAX), the faster exhaustion will occur.

Summer-Fitness Resolutions

With summer right here, many of you are starting to think up some fitness resolutions for the coming months. Setting goals right now is an excellent way to ensure you stay on track and committed to a fit lifestyle. At this point, you may find your desire to get out of the gym is growing stronger as the warmer weather rolls in, so consider setting a few resolutions that take you out of the gym, as well as setting goals for other aspects of fitness, health and performance. Here are the top 10 summer-fitness resolutions to consider.

Run for Distance

Getting up for an early-morning distance run is the perfect way to spend a Sunday morning and enjoy everything the season has to offer. Set a goal to initially accomplish a 6-to-10-mile run, and then aim to increase your distance a half-to-full mile each week.

Learn a Water Sport

Another fantastic resolution would be to learn a water sport. Get out onto a local river nearby and test your kayaking or canoeing skills. This provides another very good upper-body and core workout, and will help you get some fresh air this season.

Prepare Breakfast Every Morning

One of the most important elements of a well-rounded diet is starting your day off with breakfast each morning.

While in the winter you may forgo getting up to prepare an omelet in order to stay warm in your comfortable bed, with the sun rising earlier, make it a goal to prepare something nutritious each morning before you head out to work.

Youll not only improve your health but boost your metabolism as well.

Fitness First plans 4 more gyms, sees opportunity

HEALTH CLUBS

The UK-based Fitness First (Thailand) Co remains upbeat about its business prospects even as the number of Thais regularly exercising remains relatively low, because the number of players in the industry is still limited.

"The Thai fitness business still has room to grow, as Thais exercising regularly represents less than 1% of the total population compared with 17-18% in the US," said managing director Mark Buchanan.

The company is confident it can achieve revenue growth of 10% this year to 1.58 billion baht.

Mr Buchanan said the company will spend 380 million baht this year to open four branches and increase membership to at least 60,000 from 55,000 last year.

The local unit achieved revenue of 1.44 billion baht last year and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation of 576 million baht.

The company plans to open four or five branches per year, up from a previous projection of two or three a year.

Mr Buchanan said the company is also confident its transparent, clear and fair business model will be a success.

Membership fees will be collected on a monthly basis, without calls for an advanced lump-sum payment.

Fitness First allows members to decide on their own if they want to renew their membership, he said.

Fitness University makes Nashua home for summer

NASHUA A popular childrens running program that is outgrowing many of its venues throughout southern New Hampshire has decided to make Nashua home to its summer fitness clinics.

Last summer, Fitness University attracted 1,200 kids throughout its eight-week program, with an average of 350 children for each weekly class held at various fields in Nashua and surrounding communities.

We already have 650 kids signed up for this summer, so we decided to hold the clinics in one large location this time. It will be easier for parents, said Leann Ward, Fitness University director.

The free running clinics for children ages 3 to 14 will be held all summer at Nashua High School South, according to Ward, who said the program is thrilled to have such a large track and field venue for the fitness program.

Our program has grown tremendously. In 2005 we were averaging about 50 kids per clinic, but last year we had about 350, explained Ward. We have a lot of kids coming back each year because they had so much fun the year prior.

Fitness University was founded in 1989 by the Nashua Gate City Striders running club, with a goal of promoting free fun, fitness and good health for children. Children of all abilities are welcome, and the lessons learned at Fitness University help youth develop good healthy habits for life, according to Ward.

Keeping active in the summer is very important, especially because of the high obesity rate in this country. We tend to focus on exercises that are fun, so this is not a chore for them, she explained.

The running clinics are held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, beginning next week and continuing through July 17. A Finals Day celebration will be held on July 21.

Children are encouraged to attend all eight running clinics, but organizers understand if they are not able to participate in all of them. Following a joint stretching and warm-up period, participants are divided into eight different age categories, with various activities appropriate for each level.

The 3- and 4-year-old groups will be dismissed at 7 p.m. and will be introduced to different running games, relays and activities. Older children will have the opportunity to run relays on the track, play dodgeball and other, more sophisticated fitness games.

Fitness concern for Johnson

Glen Johnson sparked a fitness concern ahead of England's friendly with Norway this weekend when he failed to play any meaningful part in an open training session because of an infected toe.

The Liverpool defender missed training at Manchester City's Etihad Stadium on Wednesday but was in the group that arrived at the stadium on Thursday morning.

However, Johnson lasted only a matter of minutes before he headed down the tunnel for further treatment on what was described as "a minor injury" by the FA.

Even though Johnson's injury is hardly long-term, there must be a doubt over his availability for the Norway friendly in Oslo on Saturday.

And that could mean a first cap for Liverpool team-mate Martin Kelly.

With the four-strong Chelsea contingent - including three of the seven defenders named in his 23-man Euro 2012 squad - plus Wayne Rooney, all missing, Hodgson will have to draft someone in to make up a defence that is virtually certain to include Phil Jones, Joleon Lescott and Leighton Baines.

Hodgson does have the option of selecting James Milner at right-back.

However, Phil Jagielka has made senior appearances for England in that role.

The presence of Kelly is more intriguing, though, as he was added to the standby list of players on Tuesday as a direct result of the doubt over Johnson.

Former Three Lions boss Fabio Capello was a big fan of the Merseyside-born defender, although he has still to win a senior cap.

Fitness teacher: Exercise is best cure for many senior complaints

Kathy Werstein fondly recalls the first fitness class she ever participated in - it was led by Jack LaLanne.

"My mom did exercises with Jack LaLanne in front of a little black and white TV," said Werstein while sitting in her classroom at the Washington Park District Building before a yoga class recently. "It was the 1950s and I was 4 or 5 years old."

Known as the Godfather of Fitness, the California-based Jack LaLanne introduced America to the daily workout session through the brand new medium of television. Werstein did sit-ups, leg bends and jumping jacks side by side with her mother.

"I think that's why I get a kick out of working with the kids," said Werstein, who teaches all ages from preschool to senior citizens. "The best way to promote fitness is to start 'em young."

Werstein, 60, has been teaching fitness classes in the Washington area since the mid-1980s. For several years, she owned a business called Fitco, which was located in the Cherry Tree Shopping Center and later in the little building that now houses McKenzie River Pottery in Main Street. After closing Fitco in 1998, Werstein kept on teaching at various locations throughout the city through the Washington Park District.

"I think I had keys to every church in the city because we'd do classes in all the area churches," she said.

While Werstein recalls an active childhood on her parents' farm in Michigan, she didn't get interested in exercise classes until she was a young mother.

"In the mid-1970s I took my first aerobics class," she said. "I just fell in love with it. My husband had a job where we moved a lot. I went to the local YMCAs to meet people."

In the 1970s, aerobics was a new thing. Popularized by Jane Fonda, the aerobic workout was created for a culture that was becoming more and more sedentary.

"I went through the Jane Fonda era when everything was high impact, a lot of jumping up and down," said Werstein. "And then they realized that was hurting people, so they made it lower impact, but we were still waving our arms around in the air a lot. Then people got joint problems, so they stopped doing that. And then came step aerobics."
