Firefighters revamp fitness routines

Over the past year, Napas firefighters have expanded their daily fitness program, incorporating core, endurance and flexibility exercises in an effort to prevent injuries.

The daily morning group workouts at the citys four stations are more structured than in years past and have become part of the firefighters daily schedule.

Firefighters have to be physically fit, said Napa Fire Capt. Jarrett Anderson, the departments training officer, as a group of firefighters completed a circuit at Station 1 on Seminary Street.

Firefighting is an extremely vigorous activity. Were referred to as occupational athletes, Anderson said. The fitness program was designed to prevent back injuries, heart attacks and other ailments among the citys 50 firefighters who respond to an average of 300 fires a year, according to the department.

... When you get up at 2 a.m. from a resting state to go into a fire, you go from a very low heart rate to an extremely high heart rate, Anderson said.

Firefighters have always been a fit group, Anderson said. Yet when he started his career in 1996, it was not unusual to see a pink box of donuts at the fire stations kitchen, he said.

For that reason, he also stresses healthful eating habits, suggesting sample menus that steer firefighters away from the high-fat/low nutrition of yesteryear.

The department spent about $4,000 to replace some

25-year-old gym equipment at the citys two oldest stations, including Station 1. The gym equipment at Station 1 includes machines and exercise bars built from materials from the corporation yard. They also use ropes, a 30-pound ball and TRX gear.

Anderson consulted with physical therapists, doctors and trainers at Health Quest, where he works out every morning to give new life to the firefighters workout, to devise the new, revamped fitness program.

Ab Circle Pro Settles With FTC Over 'Deceptive' Fitness Claims

Aug 23, 2012 11:44am

Just three minutes a day wont make you thin, said the Federal Trade Commission.

With that, the FTC announced that it has filed deceptive advertising charges against the marketers of the Ab Circle Pro exercise device, pitched in infomercials by fitness celebrity Jennifer Nicole Lee.

The defendants agreed to a settlement of as much as $25 million to the consumers who bought the device, which cost $200 to $250. As part of the settlement, customers can apply for a refund. The size of the refund will depend on the number of people who file for one.

In its infomercials, Fitness Brands Inc. claimed that a three-minute workout with the Ab Circle Pro, a fiberglass disk with stationary handlebars on which users knelt and rotated their bodies, was the equivalent of 100 sit-ups. One infomercial included testimony from a user who claimed to have lost as much as 60 pounds. Lee said that she lost 80 pounds after using the device.

The settlement does not constitute an admission by the company that it violated the law, the FTC said.

The FTC reminds marketers that they should think twice before promising a silver-bullet solution to a health problem whether it involves losing weight or curing cancer, said David Vladeck, Director of the FTCs Bureau of Consumer Protection, in a statement.Weight loss is hard work, and telling consumers otherwise is deceptive.

Multiple infomercials aired more than 10,000 times between March 2009 and May 2010.

The FTC named as defendants Fitness Brands Inc., its two owners, the marketer Direct Holdings America Inc., Jennifer Nicole Lee and the two companies she controls.

Tour Report: Fitness: Reverse Spine Angle

By Travis Fulton, Director of Instruction, PGA TOUR Academy

The reverse spine angle is a common swing fault affecting a number of amateur players in the game of golf. This swing fault is characterized by a backward bend of the upper body during the backswing.

The reverse spine angle makes it very difficult for the golfer to initiate the downswing with the lower body due to the poor postural positioning at the top of the backswing. This typically results in the upper body dominating the downswing thus causing issues with swing path and power outputs. Secondly, a reverse angle swing fault is a primary cause of lower back pain due to the crunch factor created by this compensation pattern on the lower back.

Alternating Arm & Leg ExtensionThe cause of swing faults in general are a result of biomechanical inefficiencies, improper equipment, and/or physical dysfunctions. On the physical side of this equation, in order to execute each phase of the swing efficiently with the correct timing certain levels of joint mobility, muscular flexibility, segmental stability, and power must be present. If limitations in any of these aforementioned physical parameters exist, the ability to execute a proficient swing may be impeded.

Relative to the reverse spine angle swing fault, physical limitations impeding the golfer to maintain a fixed spine angle due to an inability to create separation between the upper and lower body can be the culprit behind this compensation pattern.

Separation between the upper and lower body allows the golfers shoulders to rotate around the spine without going into an excessive backward bend (i.e. reverse spine angle). In order to create this separation, mobility in the hips, thoracic spine (i.e. area of spine between shoulder blades) and stability in the lower body and core are needed.

Bent Knee Side to Side Leg Swings StartIn situations where physical limitations are impeding the golfers ability to create separation it is ideal to implement golf fitness exercises to assist in the correction of physical dysfunctions affecting the swing.

Golf fitness exercises conducive to developing separating between in the upper and lower body in the backswing are the Alternating Arm and Leg Extension, Bent Knee Side-to-Side Leg Swings, and Kettle Bell Swings.

Alternating Arm and Leg Extension (Core Stability): Place both of your hands on the floor directly under the shoulders. Position both of your knees directly under the hips, eyes looking down, and back flat.

Simultaneously extend the left arm and right leg. Extend both the arm and leg until completely straight. Hold this position for one second and return to the starting position of the exercise. Repeat the exercise extending the opposite arm and leg. Alternate for 10-15 repetitions.

MCKINNEY, Texas (AP) - The mother of a North Texas fitness instructor found dead in a field says the victim's ex-boyfriend seemed obsessed with her.

Testimony began Monday in the McKinney trial of Terrance Deering Black. He's charged with capital murder in the slaying of Susan Loper of Frisco. Her beaten body was found April 20, 2011, in a Frisco field near a highway.

Catherine Miller was the first witness and she described to jurors how Black gave her daughter expensive gifts.

Prosecutors opened their case by saying Black had a fixation on Loper. The defense said police should have spent more time investigating other suspects, including the victim's most recent boyfriend.

Black was arrested in Arizona, several days after the victim's body was found, when he jumped into the Grand Canyon.

West Hills fitness center open to students, public

LEMOORE The West Hills College Lemoore Fitness Center may be the schools best-kept secret, but its not like administrators havent tried to promote it.

The center, located at the west end of the Golden Eagle Arena, first opened to students and members of the public in October 2011. Since then, it has mainly been used by student athletes and a handful of other members.

Dean of Educational Services James Preston said the school has tried to promote the center on campus, on its website and even by emailing students a link to a promotional YouTube video. Despite efforts touting the state-of-the-art facility and its low membership fees, most people dont even know it exists.

As the spring semester wound down this past May, Preston said he encountered one student who was turning in a paper to coach Allen Fortune, whose office is located in the Fitness Center.

I was in here doing something and this kid shows up with his final exam and hes like, Is coach Fortune around? Preston said. And I said, Yeah, hes right there. And then [the kid] turns around and hes like, Whoa. This is awesome, man. Can students use this?

Because the Golden Eagle Arena was built using bond funds approved by a vote of the community, Preston said the college intentionally tried to keep membership fees low as a way to say thank you. Students pay just $40 for the school year (August through May) and members of the community pay $60. Fees may also be paid each semester or on a monthly basis.

Our whole goal is to break even, Preston said. Weve kind of done the math and theres a certain amount of memberships, if we can hit that for the year, then we recoup our costs. Thats the whole purpose of it. Were not looking to make any money. Its really more just providing the service.

Members can begin using the facility as soon as they pay their fees. One of the facilitys attendants will give a brief orientation to make sure people know how to use the equipment properly and safely.

Ill ask them what their goals are, what they want to do, what they want to get out of the fitness lab, said Dalton Robison, a Fitness Center attendant. Most people just want to get on the treadmill or the bike and I just show them how to start it up and [work] the different programs that it has. Then I walk them through the free weights section, cable weights, and I pretty much tailor the orientation to what theyre looking to get out of the Fitness Center.

After that, members are free to work out with the treadmills, elliptical machines, free weights, cable weights and a whole host of machines to work out every muscle group. Members also have access to the indoor walking and running track on the upper level of the arena.

Clarington Fitness Centre could be saved with federal funding

CLARINGTON -- The Clarington Fitness Centre could be saved from the threat of being closed with an application to a federal funding program.

"There is a small but dedicated group of users at the fitness centre," said Mayor Adrian Foster.

The fitness centre, on Liberty Street next to Bowmanville High School, houses a pool and squash courts. Clarington council held a special summer meeting on Monday, Aug. 13 to approve the application for up to $1 million of federal funding through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund.

Without the federal support, in a few years the municipality would face a "tough decision", according to the mayor. With plans for a new recreation centre in south Bowmanville, it's entirely possible the small fitness centre would have to be closed.

"(The fitness centre) is great. It's a little bit chilly today," said Maria Moreno, who brings her granddaughters, 9 and 7, to the pool every day for swimming lessons. "I understand in the public (swim) time it's busy."

The federal funding would give the fitness centre a "much needed facelift" and extend the life of the facility by 20 years.

"The facility is definitely in need of an overhaul so I definitely look forward to this," said Councillor Corinna Traill.

The Clarington Fitness Centre opened in January 1981. Since then the municipality has opened two other pools, one in Courtice and one in Newcastle. The Courtice and Newcastle pools tend to be more popular because they have more modern amenities, including family changing rooms, adequate public viewing, water slides, a leisure pool tank and tot pool teaching area.

Over the years, the number of users at the Clarington Fitness Centre pool has declined.

However, the fitness centre has two courts and is home to the Clarington Squash Club, which has seen significant growth over the last four years. The municipality would like to add another court.

Supplements may affect teens' fitness

Published: Aug. 16, 2012 at 1:49 AM

ZARAGOZA, Spain, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Blood levels of various micronutrients were correlated with how well teens performed in certain physical fitness tests, researchers in Spain found.

Luis Gracia-Marco of the University of Zaragoza in Spain and colleagues used data from a larger, long-term research project involving thousands of volunteers ages 12-17 in cities scattered across Europe.

Blood samples taken in one-third of the volunteers -- about 1,000 -- were tested for a variety of micronutrients, including hemoglobin, indicative of iron intake, soluble transferrin receptor, serum ferritin, retinol, vitamin C, beta-carotene, alpha-tocopherol, vitamin B6, cobalamin, holo-transcobalamin, plasma folate, folate and vitamin D.

The volunteers' physical fitness was assessed through a standing long jump test, which assesses lower-body muscular strength, and a 65-foot shuttle run test, which assesses cardiovascular fitness through maximal oxygen consumption.

The study, published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, found blood levels of certain micronutrients were intimately connected with the volunteers' performance on the physical fitness tests. For cardiorespiratory fitness, concentrations of hemoglobin, retinol, and vitamin C in males and beta-carotene and vitamin D in females was associated with maximal oxygen consumption.

For muscular fitness, concentrations of hemoglobin, beta-carotene, retinol, and alpha-tocopherol in males and beta-carotene and vitamin D in females was associated with performing better on the standing long jump test, the study said.
