Tiger Woods' Fitness Carries Him Through Heat, into Contention at Congressional

COMMENTARY | Though his health has been in question in recent years, it was the fitness of Tiger Woods that allowed him to overcome a shaky start and put himself back into contention at the AT&T National at Congressional Country Club.

The Southern California native and current Florida resident dealt with a heat index of 107 degrees and managed a 3-under 68 on Friday to move to 2-under for the tournament through two rounds. He was clearly comfortable and undaunted by the severe temperatures, which dominated the tournament talk as much as the difficulty of the course and supreme play of the leaders.

Moving into the weekend, Woods will have confidence and knowledge that some of his competitors may not be as prepared as he is to deal with the extreme heat wave that will continue to plague the Washington D.C. area.

Even though he's had success at this difficult test before, the sports world still needs to see a major championship victory from the current world No. 4 to consider him back to form. Without it, he's just another standout PGA TOUR player.

That's the standard that he set for himself over the stretch of a legendary career that includes 72 professional victories. It's a standard that he'll have to live up to in order to get his most stalwart critics to believe in him once again.

At age 36, his dedication to fitness could be exactly what allows him to remain competitive for many more years to come. Though he has had significant knee issues that stemmed from his rigorous workout regimen, that same commitment to staying in shape could bring his ultimate goal of surpassing jack Nicklaus' 18 professional majors within reach.

Woods is at the forefront of a generation that has placed a premium on athleticism in golf -- gone are the days of the best players in the world looking like they just got done scarfing down a hot dog and a six pack of beer at the local municipal course. Players like Woods and those who grew up watching and emulating his every move are now elite athletes.

Whether or not Woods' fitness translates into a win at Congressional will be worth following through the weekend.

It's a pretty good golf tournament, too.

Fitness Myths To Avoid

With so many people offering advice on weight loss, it can be hard to separate fact from fiction. All too often Ive overheard a hardworking gym-goer sharing a well-meaning but ill-informed tip with another exerciser. And Im not the only one whos heard fitness folklore being swapped on the training room floor. I spoke to top experts in the field to find out the common fitness myths they hear from clients. From the pseudo miracles of the fat-burning zone to the misguided magic of working out on an empty stomach, here are the fitness falsehoods you should never follow.

Myth #1: The best way to lose weight is to drastically cut calories

Our bodies are smarter than we think, said Jari Love, star of the Get Extremely Ripped: 1000 Hardcore DVD. When we eat too little, our body believes that its starving so our metabolism slows down and holds onto fat as a potential energy source. A much better approach: Eat more often, but eat less food at one timeand focus on these 7 Foods Not to Ditch When You Diet. For the fastest weight loss, break up your total daily calorie allotmentdont eat fewer than 1,200 calories if youre a woman or fewer than 1,800 calories if youre a maninto five to six small meals to keep your metabolism humming.

Myth #2: Heavy weights will bulk you up

This just isnt possible for most women, said personal trainer and Prevention contributing editor Chris Freytag. Ladies have too much estrogen in their hormone makeup. Yes, heavier weights build muscle and strength, but most of us women arent lifting anything so heavy that we are at risk for building man muscles. Plus, muscle is the secret to a revved up metabolism, as it burns more calories than more fat, even when youre sitting on the couch or at your desk.

Myth #3: Keep your heart rate in the fat-burning zone

If youve been exercising at 60 to 70 percent of your maximum heart rate in order to shed flab faster, you could be slowing your slimdown. The fat-burning zone is a complete myth, said Wayne Westcott, Prevention advisory board member and fitness research director at Quincy College. While its true that you burn a higher percentage of fat calories when exercising at a moderate pace, you burn fewer calories overall. For instance, if you get on a treadmill and walk at a 3.5 MPH pace for 30 minutes, you might burn 250 calories. If you raise the speed to 7 miles per hour, youd burn 500. Bottom line? Its much better to go at the faster speed.

Myth #4: Boosting cardio is the best way to bypass a plateau

The most effective way to lose weight is to include both cardio and weights in your routine, said Love. One study found that when individuals cycled for 30 minutes a day, they lost three pounds of fat and gained a half pound of muscle in eight weeks. But individuals who cycled for 15 minutes and weight trained for 15 minutes a day lost 10 pounds of fat and gained two pounds of calorie-burning muscle.

Myth #5: Ab exercises are the fastest way to a flat belly

Planet Fitness in Portsmouth is undergoing an $800,000 face-lift, including new exercise equipment and an expanded tanning area.Charles McMahon photo

PORTSMOUTH An $800,000 makeover under way at the local Planet Fitness is expected to bring a host of new health and fitness options to its members.

The Portsmouth location opened in 2000, eight years after the nationwide health club chain was founded in Dover in 1992.

Since then, the facility has seen no significant upgrades other than to the equipment and a slight expansion.

But all of that is in the midst of changing.

Michael Peters, manager of the local gym, said work on the renovation project began earlier this month with the installation of 50-inch plasma televisions throughout the facility.

Peters said the upgrades also include relocation of the front desk area. If all goes as planned, Peters said, he expects the work to be complete by the end of July or early August.

With 542 gyms across the country and counting, Planet Fitness has 3.6 million members and is always willing to reinvest in the company, according to John Craig, director of brand development for the business.

"The company feels this is well worth it," he said. "This place has been here a long time. There's been lots of touchups over the years, but never anything like this."

Tour Report: Fitness: Strengthen to help coiling

By Sean Cochran, Golf Fitness

Coiling can be described as the resistance created from the turning of the upper body to a greater degree than the lower body in the backswing. The coiling action creates an immense amount of elastic energy which can be translated into power during the downswing. This action is often referred to as the X-factor.

In order to create an X-factor a number of physical components are required. A stable lower body is needed. This creates the platform by which the upper body rotates. Mobility in the hips and flexibility in segments of the upper body are a requirement for the rotational components of the X-factor. Generally speaking the more stable the lower body and the greater flexibility in the upper body the more coiling the golfer can create.

Golf fitness training and exercises can assist in developing these physical components necessary for the coiling action of the golf swing. Dissecting the requirements of this action the development of lower body strength, hip mobility, and upper body flexibility will greatly enhance the ability to create an X-factor.

Looking at golf fitness exercises conducive to developing these physical components a Goblet Squat for the lower body strength/stability, Spiders to develop dynamic hip mobility, and Kneeling Club Rotations to focus on upper body flexibility could very much enhance the coiling action in the golf swing.

Golf Fitness Exercises:

Goblet Squat: (Lower body strength/stability) Grasp a dumbbell with both hands in front the chest. Rest the dumbbell in the palms of both hands, and elbows pointing down. Place the feet slightly wider than shoulder width apart, toes pointed outward at 45 degrees, and heels on the floor. Maintain an upright torso with the eyes looking forward, and arms extended straight.

Slowly lower the hips while keeping the torso upright by bending the knees. Continue to squat downward until the thighs are parallel to the floor. Pause for one second, return to the starting position of the exercise, and repeat for 8-15 repetitions.

Spiders: (Hip mobility) Position the body in a standard push-up position, back flat, hands shoulder width apart, and eyes looking down.

Begin by lifting your left foot and placing it outside the left hand. Slowly attempt to press your left forearm down towards the floor, keeping your left hand in place. Lower your forearm as low to the floor as possible, and hold for one second. Return to the starting position of the exercise and repeat with your right hand and foot. Perform 10-15 repetitions.
