Limiting Junk Food Options May Not Help You Lose Weight

Many people try to lose weight by limiting themselves to just one or two kinds of junk food. In theory, it sounds good. However, a new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition is saying that although your calorie count from junk food may decrease, it doesnt necessarily mean that your overall calorie count will follow suit. Apparently, there are some people who compensate for their lack of junk food variety by consuming too much of other foods.

Researchers recruited 200 obese participants into a program that would supposedly help them lose weight. This involved group meetings, increased physical activity, and a calorie-reduced diet. In addition, half of the group was asked to limit their junk food variety to just two options.

In the 18 months of the study, participants who were asked to limit their junk food variety were found to have consumed fewer calories from junk food compared to the other half. At six and 12 months, the limited group was consuming 100 less junk food calories each day. By the end of the study, they were consuming less than 80 junk food calories each day.

At the end of the study, both groups lost weight, having consumed fewer calories in the course of the program. However, they both lost the same amount of weight on average--around 4.5 kilograms--indicating that limiting junk food variety wont give anyone an edge over other dieters.

According to Alexandra Johnstone, a researcher at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, who was consulted by Reuters.com for her thoughts on the study, "It makes sense to try and reduce the amount of variety in the diet, but human beings enjoy eating, so they will find other food components to consume than the ones that are being limited."

If you want to lose weight more successfully, dont just limit your junk food variety; do the same for your other meals. Portion control is also a big factor that contributes to weight loss.

Should Rex Ryan Appear on NBC's "The Biggest Loser" Weight-Loss Reality Show? Fan's View

NBC's popular weight-loss reality TV series "The Biggest Loser" is hitting the road to find new contestants for Season 14, and I believe New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan would be a great fit for the show.

Ryan, 49, already dropped 90 pounds from his hefty 350-pound frame since undergoing lap-band surgery at NYU Medical Center in March of 2010, but there's plenty more fat left for him to drop.

Working out with world-renowned trainer Bob Harper would push Ryan to new levels in his weight-loss diet and exercise routine, as he's helped hundreds of people successfully lose weight.

According to an LATimes.com report, "Season 14 is scheduled to start airing in January 2013. Casting producers say they are looking for 'charismatic individuals' who are at least 18 years old, are at least 85 pounds overweight and would like a sweet shot at a grand prize of $250,000 for the person who loses the largest percentage of his or her body weight."

Rex Ryan is a charismatic individual who is at least 18 and still 85 pounds overweight. He fits every aspect of the description of contestants they are looking for.

It would be a win-win for all parties involved.

For the coach, it would be a chance for him to get in the best shape of his life, get healthy and feel great.

New York Jets fans need Ryan at the helm for the long-term, so we want him to think about staying healthy.

His large frame is fine for now, but you don't want to be carrying around 350 pounds as you approach your mid-50s and early-60s. That's just asking for a heart attack.

As for "The Biggest Loser," bringing Ryan on board would help to spruce up a stale format. We've already seen him shine bright on reality shows, as his brash personality delighted audiences nationwide when he appeared on HBO's "Hard Knocks."

ADHD and diet

Our son was recently diagnosed with ADHD. We are interested in trying diet modification to control his symptoms but have found conflicting information on the Internet regarding diet and ADHD. Are there any reputable sources on this subject?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Untreated ADHD can lead to academic and behavioral problems.

Traditional therapies for ADHD include medication, behavioral therapy and classroom modification. Stimulants are the most common type of medication used to treat ADHD. Currently, no diet therapies have been shown to be as effective as medication. Diet, however, can play an important role in the management of ADHD.

A February 2012 article titled "The Diet Factor in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder" (Pediatrics), provides an extensive review of the available literature on dietary methods used to treat ADHD. The article specifically looks at hypoallergenic/elimination diets, omega supplements, iron and zinc supplements, and the role that sugar, dyes and preservatives play in ADHD. Omega-3 and -6 fatty acid supplementation demonstrated significant promise in the treatment of ADHD.

Elimination or hypoallergenic diets are based on a belief that children may have certain food triggers for their behavior. Although these diets were not shown to be universally effective, there were isolated cases that resulted in improvement. Elimination diets are very restrictive and should be monitored by a physician or dietician.

One Australian study cited in the article identified a link between ADHD and a "Western" diet. Certain foods (fast food, red meat, processed meats, potato chips, high-fat dairy products and soft drinks) were linked to a higher incidence of ADHD. The preferred diet of fish, vegetables, legumes and whole grain was associated with lower rates of ADHD. Because a diet that is high in omega-3 fatty acids, fiber and anti-oxidants contributes to overall health, this is a good place to start when considering diet modification for a child with ADHD.

Fitness trainer gains and loses 70 pounds in 1 year — on purpose

By Jacque Wilson, CNN

updated 9:41 AM EDT, Tue June 5, 2012

Fitness trainer Drew Manning gained 70 pounds in six months, then lost it all before a year was up.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

(CNN) -- When Drew Manning stepped out from behind the cardboard cutout of his former fat self on Monday, the audience of "Good Morning America" was appropriately shocked.

The fitness trainer's journey had come to an end after successfully losing more than 70 pounds -- six months after he purposely gained the same amount. "Like it never happened," host George Stephanopoulos said.

"Kind of," Manning said. Both Manning and his wife, Lynn, can attest that a lot actually has changed in the past year. While Manning's body may have returned to its six-pack heydays, his mind, in many ways, has not.

Always a fitness junkie, staying in shape comes naturally for Manning. He's that guy at the gym the rest of us love to hate, the one who likes to use his biceps for pumping iron instead of changing channels, and who prefers sucking down a spinach shake to indulging in a brownie sundae.

Because of that, Manning was a "judgmental" trainer, his wife says. "He would look at someone who was overweight and say, 'They must really be lazy.'

"I was convinced people used genetics or similar excuses as a crutch," Manning writes in his new book, "Fit2Fat2Fit." "You either wanted to be healthy or you didn't."

Area schools offer organized exercise programs

The summer break just started, but instead of relaxing and hanging out at the mall, many children are back at school, working hard and getting in shape for fall.

Classes may be out for the summer, but a lot of Montgomery County schools are offering organized strength, exercise, weight training and sports camps over the summer months for seventh-graders through seniors in high school.

Were starting the kids off with a mile run and then move on to conditioning exercises, said John Cicherski, a football coach at Peet Junior High. We teach them about weigh training and do some light drills all without pads, helmets or contact.

More than 50 seventh- and eighth-grade students showed up for the first summer weight training and conditioning program offered at Peet Monday morning. The supervised sessions are free for incoming and returning students, although participants must be cleared by a physicians examination before they are allowed to participate.

Its getting warm outside, acknowledged Cicherski, so we have lots of breaks and lots of water.

Peet, like many schools, makes its athletic fields, equipment and staff available to students who want to stay in shape over the summer or work on their athletic abilities for team sports in the coming year.

Clint Heard, athletic director for the Montgomery Independent School District, said the high school weight room is available from 8 a.m. to noon and 6-8 p.m. for students in seventh grade and above.

We also offer a special program managed by Cap Elite for more structured exercise, condition and cardio workout, Heard said. There is a fee, but its a program managed locally so kids can participate without leaving the district.

Evan Stone, a coach with the Willis Independent School District, said several programs are available for boys and girls. Specific schedules are available at http://www.willisisd.org.

University Interscholastic League regulations allow up to two hours of supervised athletic activities each day, but the programs are strictly voluntary and cannot include specific skill instructions for any sport, according to the UIL website. The optional programs can last no longer than six weeks and are limited to strength and conditioning regimens.

Exercise, Diet Improve Longevity For Older Women

We've long known that exercising and eating fruits and veggies can, over the long-term, help improve both the quality and quantity of our years. But the effect of healthy behaviors on longevity among those who have already reached senior citizen status may also be strong. That's especially true when a produce-heavy diet and exercise routine have been combined, according to new research.

A study in this month's Journal of the American Geriatrics Society finds that women in their 70s who live in senior citizen communities may still be able to improve the length of their years with an exercise and healthy eating plan. The researchers studied the exercise and eating habits of 713 women, aged 70 to 79, as part of the Women's Health and Aging Studies.

They found that women with both the highest level of physical fitness, as measured by survey responses, and the highest consumption of fruits and vegetables (measured via a blood test) were eight times less likely to die than the women who performed the worst in both of these categories.

Each category, individually, was also effective. All told, women who were in the most active group at the start of the study were 71 percent less likely to die over the five-year period of study than the least active group. And among those who survived, their average serum carotenoid levels -- the compound researchers looked for in the blood tests to gauge high-produce diet -- was 12 percent higher than in the group who died.

So what's the takeaway? It's never too late to up the veggie, fruit and exercise quotients in your life -- and to great effect. This study proves that the returns to women in their 70s are significant, and that could be a good impetus for improved programming at senior facilities and among geriatric doctors.

Programs and policies to promote longevity should include interventions to improve nutrition and physical activity in older adults, lead author Dr. Emily J Nicklett, from the University of Michigan School of Social Work said in a statement.

Inspired? Check out this list of exercises that have been found to increase longevity.

In 2008, a small Swiss study found that sedentary people who switched from taking escalators and elevators to taking the stairs cut their risk of dying prematurely by 15 percent.

"This suggests that stair climbing can have major public health implications," lead researcher Dr. Philippe Meyer, told the BBC.

An earlier look at data from the Harvard Alumni Health Study also found that climbing 35 or more flights of stairs a week significantly increased longevity when compared to people who climbed fewer than 10 stories a week.

Biking to work is a great way to squeeze exercise into your day, spend some time outside and even save on gas money. But a leisurely ride, while it might leave you less sweaty upon arrival at the office, won't do as much for your lifespan as if you really ride it out.

A study of Copenhagen cyclists found that men who pedaled the fastest lived more than five years longer than slower cycling men, and the fastest women cyclists lived almost four years longer.

Flickr photo by terren in Virginia

A 2009 analysis of data from the Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study found that men who swam regularly had about a 50 percent smaller risk of dying than sedentary men -- but swimmers also had a lower mortality rate than men who walked and ran for their exercise.
