SharecareNow Names the Top 10 Influencers of Online Fitness Conversation

ATLANTA, GA and SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire -06/20/12)- With nearly 150 million people in the United States aged 20 and older either overweight or obese, SharecareNow, powered by WCG, today announced the "SharecareNow 10 - Fitness" to recognize the most influential individuals that drive exercise and fitness conversation online, with a goal of creating a healthier nation.

The comprehensive list includes some of the top names in exercise and fitness today, from Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper -- celebrity personal trainers and television personalities known for their role on the show "The Biggest Loser" -- to experts from popular health magazines like Fitness Magazine and Shape, to bloggers sharing their personal fitness stories.

"Learning about the most effective and beneficial physical training activities is essential when developing a personalized fitness program to improve one's lifestyle," said Dr. Mike Clark, chief science officer for Sharecare and chief executive officer of the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). "Our hope is that people searching for fitness information online can rely on Sharecare experts and the SharecareNow 10 - Fitness list to determine which fitness solutions are right for them, and how to optimize their fitness goals in order to live healthy and active lives."

Experts agree that adults should spend at least 2.5 hours each week doing moderate-intensity aerobic activities or at least 1.25 hours per week doing vigorous-intensity activities. It is also recommended that children participate in moderate to vigorous activities for at least one hour each day.(1) However, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only about 20.4 percent of American adults aged 18 years and older met the Physical Activity Guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening physical activity.(2)

To be included in the SharecareNow 10 - Fitness list, influencers must have demonstrated a consistent impact on fitness-specific conversations online over the past year. An individual's influence is measured and quantified through a proprietary algorithm based on more than 40 individual metrics, including fitness relevance, syndication, presence and reach. These influencers are then ranked from most to least influential based on a unique scoring structure.

The following top influencers make up the SharecareNow 10 - Fitness list:

1. Jillian Michaels - http://www.everydayhealth.com 2. Cassey Ho - http://blogilates.com 3. Sarah Klein - http://www.huffingtonpost.com 4. Karla Walsh - http://www.fitnessmagazine.com 5. Paige Waehner - http://exercise.about.com 6. Adam Bornstein - http://www.livestrong.com 7. Jessica Smith - http://www.shape.com 8. Gina Harney - http://fitnessista.com 9. Bob Harper - http://www.mytrainerbob.com 10. Chris Freytag - http://chrisfreytag.com

In support of raising awareness around fitness, @SharecareNow will host a Twitter Chat on Friday, June 22nd from 12-2 pm EDT. Participants must use #SCFFheat to participate in the conversation, where fitness experts will answer questions related to physical activities and how to exercise safely in the summer heat.

Fitness Tools for Every Athlete

The latest generation of high-tech personal fitness devices can help motivate you and improve your athletic performance. "Some of the new gadgets encourage sedentary people to get moving," says Carol Torgan, PhD, a physiologist who consults for the American College of Sports Medicine. "Others boost athletic performance by providing real-time information about target heart rate, running speed, and other parameters."

But with so many gadgets crowding the market, choosing the right one for your workout and style isn't easy. Here are eight types of fitness tools that may help improve your workout.

1. Basic Step Counters (Pedometers)

If you need a little extra motivation to get moving, pedometers that count each step can help. "People are often surprised when they strap on a step counter to see how inactive they are during the day," says Ruth Ann Carpenter, MS, an exercise consultant and co-author of Active Living Every Day. "With a step counter, you can set a goal of how many steps to take every day and track your progress. If you're falling short, you may be motivated to take a walk after dinner instead of watching TV."

Step counters are valuable for people who get their exercise by walking or running. It won't accurately register other exercise, such as bicycling or weight lifting. About 5,000 steps is the minimum you should log in a day. But 10,000 steps is ideal if you want to be active.

The most basic and inexpensive pedometers measure steps only when worn or held in an upright position. More expensive models use tri-axis or 3D technology to record steps no matter how they are positioned, so they tend to be easier to use and more reliable.

2. GPS-Based Fitness Monitors

Some of the latest fitness devices use GPS signals to monitor your exact location. GPS-equipped devices can record how far and how fast you walk or run. You can also use them to chart a path when you're running or walking in an unfamiliar place.

In general, GPS devices are more accurate than basic step counters at estimating the distance you've walked or run.

3. Calorie Counters

"Best case scenario is if we do have a hostage involved like the information indicates is to get that hostage out safely. And the threat is to blow up the dam at Bundicks Spillway - so the best case scenario is we can prevent that from happening," said Morton.

Breaking a sweat for the feeling rather than fitness

Health benefits ... exercise improves mood in some.

Almost everyone has got the message that exercise is important for health. Yet most who start exercise programs stop. Perhaps, researchers say, the way to persuade more people to exercise is to study those rare individuals who love it.

What makes someone a committed exerciser? And how motivating are the much-vaunted improvements to health?

Recently these questions have become more urgent. This month, exercise researchers published an analysis of five rigorous studies reporting that about 10 per cent of people have an ''adverse response'' to exercise. In them, at least one cardiovascular risk factor got worse instead of better.

Advertisement: Story continues below

Some exercise and public health experts worried that people might use the findings as an excuse not to exercise. But that assumes that exercisers are motivated largely by health concerns to begin with.

''When a physician tells a patient, 'You need to make a change for your health', that can be motivating, especially if the person has a health problem,'' says Rodney Dishman, director of the exercise psychology laboratory at the University of Georgia. ''But it usually wanes over time. People don't feel their bones getting stronger, they don't feel lipids changing, they don't feel their blood pressure changing.''

Most who start exercising say the goal is to lose weight or improve their health. But those who begin on the promise of imperceptible health effects often stop, Dr Dishman says, saying they do not have time, or are too tired after work, or they just lost interest.

And there are no good studies investigating why people keep exercising. Dishman and others suspect the motivation is sheer pleasure - feeling energised, a boost in mood, feeling restless and uncomfortable without exercise. And you may not be able to will yourself to have this response, he says.

Biological traits, Dishman says, ''seem to play a bigger role in both the choice to be active and the outcomes of being active than folks - namely public health advocates - have been willing to admit''.

Regarding The Celebrity Weight Loss Shade, You Wasn’t With Them Working Out In The Gym

Source: fitperez.com

I dont really listen to Drake but I had to borrow a line from his Stay Schemin verse directed at Vanessa Bryant (You wasnt with me shooting in the gym) because it perfectly illustrates my point in the ongoing did she or didnt she have weight loss surgery debate. I dont usually walk around defending celebrities either, considering they can always go cry in their money as one of my old editors used to say, but the celebrity weight loss shade is realreal ridiculous that is.

As I was reading over Chaka Khans interview yesterday I was surprised she mentioned people thought she had weight loss surgery. When she first made her big 60-pound reveal, Chaka hadnt been seen for a hot minute so it wasnt as though one day we saw her at a certain size and she was significantly lighter the next. Plus, most noted how fit she appeared to be and thats not characteristic of people who have just gone under the knife. Shes since mentioned that she went vegan and credits her dramatic loss to the absence of meat from her diet but many are still assuming a surgeon was also present somewhere in this.

Fast forward to the post on Jennifer Hudsons new clothing line and there was all kinds of shade unraveling about how her entire Weight Watchers 80-pound weight loss is a hoax. I expected side eyes at the thought of people wanting to dress like her but I thought all the nonsense over her having gastric bypass surgery was dead. Like Chaka, J-Hud didnt pull one of those overnight size 16 to size 6 moves. It took her somewhere around a year to get those results, which is hardly how long it would take had she went the surgery route. In fact, shes pretty much a model for healthy weight loss which should be achieved safely at two pounds per week.

Whats crazy to me is how people are calling her a fraud for being a Weight Watchers spokesperson and claiming thats the only way she shed pounds. Um, how many of yall were with her in the gym? Better yet, the hospital or the operating table where she supposedly had this surgery? People have gone so far as to say that shes false promoting because she doesnt acknowledge the exercise aspect of her plan that brought her to those results. I think everyone knows diet and exercise go hand-in-hand. Her job isnt to sell treadmills, ellipticals, jump ropes or basketballs, shes pushing the portion of her success story that relates to food which is the Weight Watchers meal plan. Whats fraudulent about that? And the point that she probably had a trainer whip her into shape (either in lieu of or in addition to surgery) is null and void as well because Ive seen many an average woman shell out cash to have someone kick her butt into shape during 5 am workouts.

Whats even more crazy to me though is how people will see a random overweight black woman and say she needs to lose weight as if its as simple to do as letting the words come out of your mouth. Then when they see a celebrity who worked out and used a food program to drop pounds they assume its not possible and that she must have had surgery. And then when they hear Beyonce say she dropped 40 pounds in a few months eating lettuce and running on a treadmill they believe it and celebrate it as if thats healthy. Wheres the logic in that?

On some level, I blame Star Jones for this. Her notorious denial of weight loss surgery has made every other weight loss success story after hers suspect from the gate because she kept up the charade for so long. But this is also just a classic case of people contradicting themselves and dare I say it, hating. Why is it women like J-Hud get beat on so hard for assumedly not being healthy and needing to lose weight, and then when they do it through sweat, tofu, and rice cakes, its assumed they took the easy way out? You cant try to beat diet and exercise into one persons head all day long as the magic pill for weight loss and then when another person gets the results they should from doing what was suggested, all of a sudden it isnt possible? Whats so difficult about accepting and celebrating someone elses triumph, and silencing the need to steal their shine?

The most interesting part is the critics are always people whove never known what its like to have to drop weight themselves. Theyre speaking from facts theyve heard or read, not from personal experience which is why they suggest someone just start walking 30 minutes a day as if thats going to add up to a 3,500 calorie deficit that would yield them a one-pound weight loss. Its the same reason they assume any celebrity who has gone from plus-size to average couldnt have done it without a medical intervention: they dont know what theyre talking about.

Speculating on celebrity weight loss is no different than commenting on other rumors about who theyre dating, sleeping with, or beefing with. We werent there, so we dont know. Therefore theres no reason to throw shade and assume the worst. If you hate celebs when theyre fat and find a whole new reason to hate them when theyre thin, how do they ever win?

Johnny Depp Loss 2012 Johnny Depp Diet Programs

Johnny Depp Loss 2012 Johnny Depp Diet Programs - Isn't amazing how all of the celebrities you see have a celebrity diet plan for weight loss to maintain their weight. Some of them are shapely and healthy looking, and look good on camera. Others look like they haven't eaten in weeks, like they just got back from the famine in Ethiopia for a few weeks. Like they had been starving themselves to lose weight, and that is probably what they have been doing. You see it in all the tabloids, this person lost 100 pounds again, this one gained 100 pounds, and then lost 150 pounds. Some are not as dramatic; this one lost 40 pounds and is a television spokesperson, because the previous celebrity diet spokesperson gained the weight back. The fact is they may be starving themselves to lose weight, fasting like they are going through a famine.

"Click Here to Watch Weird VIDEO About The 7 Foods that KILL Abdominal Fat!"

Celebrities make dieting look so easy, don't they? One month they're on the cover of US Weekly for gaining too much weight and the next they're headlining the "sexiest beach bods" story. It is true that seriously overweight people can lose large amounts of fat in a quick amount of time, because of the large fat content in their cells. But those that are only a few pounds overweight, losing 40 pounds in a month, is not only starvation, it is malnutrition and can have serious side effects. Our body weight can fluctuate day to day and the best diets take the weight off gradually, the way it came on. If you lose a lot of weight in a short time, staying the same size will be impossible unless you follow a maintenance program for life. Good, sensible dieting means skill and will power combined. A lot of these celebrity diets or Hollywood diets are very bad for the body and the celebrities are thinking of the camera rather than their long term health. Researches indicate that individuals who indulge in a weight loss program by taking prepared meals end up losing an additional 31% weight as against those who cook their own meals. With help, losing weight is made easier and at times much faster as against doing it on your own.Diet delivery is gaining popularity in a big way as it is fairly affordable by even the common man, roughly around $20 a day with an increasing variety to choose from. A few of which include: Zone-compliant meal, low carbs plan, veggie meals, and gourmet too.

"Click Here to Watch Weird VIDEO About The 7 Foods that KILL Abdominal Fat!"

With the rapidly increasing epidemic of obesity and increasing BMI levels, there is an array of products and diet plan to aid in combating obesity. Celebrity slim diet, the basic idea is to educate people and not to depict food as an enemy. Like a lot of famous diets in Hollywood, if your body thinks you are starving, it is going to hold on to every calorie you take in to keep you from starving to death instead of burning them for energy. When you follow a properly balanced weight loss diet, your metabolism will hardly notice the decrease in calories and continue to burn fat it doesn't need to store. This is a more long-term weight loss strategy.

Celebrities do not have secrets about dieting. They are normal people like the rest of us but, unlike most of us, they have people working for them such as diet advisors and personal trainers. Celebrity diets involve a level of commitment and dedication which we struggle with. The best celebrity diets involve eating sensibly and limiting our calorie intake. Having these factors in mind will allow you to have safe and easy weight loss that will provide you with short term and long term consistent results.

Diet a heart-tugger for Belgian Tervuren's owners

Courtesy of Diane Lazzari

Lucca the Belgian Tervuren's goal weight was 85 pounds, which meant she had to shed 15 pounds.

The running joke shared between Diane Lazzari and her husband, Dennis Green, was that their dog, an 8-year-old Belgian Tervuren, had a fully stocked refrigerator hidden in their Alameda backyard. Because regardless of what they fed her, Lucca kept gaining weight.

When our veterinarian shared her concern about Lucca's weight, which hovered between 98 and 101 pounds, I reassured her that we walked a vigorous 20 miles a week. A few extra pounds shouldn't be that big a deal, should it?

Then I read an article in The Chronicle that spelled out the "secret" formula for losing weight, human or canine: Eat less, exercise more and voila! A no-brainer, sure, but that article helped me realize that Lucca's extra weight really was a problem. Even a few additional pounds could lead to long-term health risks, such as hip dyspepsia and heart problems.

Dennis and I agreed that a serious diet was in order for our pudgy Belgian. A meeting with our vet established that Lucca's goal weight was 85 pounds with no more than 970 calories per day.

Lucca's first meal on her new regime was a real eye-opener. It was immediately evident that I had been overfeeding her, and by a lot. I used to fill her large metal bowl to the very top. Now, her 1 cup of measured food sat sadly at the bottom of her bowl, filling it only to about one quarter of what I had been giving her.

Lucca didn't have a refrigerator in the backyard. I was her refrigerator! Plus, Dennis and I were guilty of another no-no: sharing our people food with Lucca. We realized we had to cut back. My half scrambled egg in the morning became a teaspoon. For Dennis, leaving generous leftovers in his bowl changed to letting Lucca lick an empty bowl clean.

With monthly weigh-ins at the vet, we slowly started seeing progress. Two pounds one month, a pound another, sometimes none, but at least the numbers were moving down.

Unfortunately, these pound-saving techniques were not appreciated. I never realized how piercing the eyes of a Belgian could be while I was eating a hamburger. Or the effectiveness of a cold nose poking my face at 3 a.m. Initially, I thought the "cold nose poke" was Lucca's way of telling me she needed to go out. But I soon recognized ulterior motives were at stake when she continued walking past me, past the open door, and into the kitchen. Standing next to her empty bowl, she would look at it, and then back at me with an accusing stare. The message was all too clear and hard to ignore.

Lifestyle Family Fitness members left without answers as LA Fitness prepares to buy chain

One of the nation's largest fitness chains is about to gobble up one of Tampa Bay's most popular gyms: LA Fitness has reached a deal to acquire St. Petersburg-based Lifestyle Family Fitness.

The terms of the deal for the 33 Lifestyles locations in Florida were not disclosed, according to Club Industry, the trade publication that first reported the deal on Monday.

"The transaction is subject to various closing conditions," LA Fitness said in a statement to the magazine. "While the parties are hopeful that the transaction will be completed within the next several weeks, there can be no assurance as to when or whether a closing will occur."

Neither officials from LA Fitness nor Lifestyle returned repeated calls for comment from the Tampa Bay Times. Nor did the companies make any announcements on their respective websites or through social media.

That left Lifestyle's employees and patrons in Tampa Bay with plenty of questions and no answers: What will happen to their jobs, their memberships, their gyms?

"My wife is not happy," said retired U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Brian Potridge, 46, who hoped to find an open treadmill late Monday. He and his wife work out at the St. Petersburg Lifestyle at 5900 Fourth St. N.

"Her main reason for coming is the classes," Potridge said. "She's heard that LA Fitness doesn't have the same ones."

Indeed, Stuart Goldman, an industry analyst and managing editor of Club Industry, said that the two fitness chains are dissimilar: Lifestyle is known for bigger facilities that hold more fitness classes; LA Fitness is known for having smaller buildings with fewer offerings.

There's also bound to be confusion ahead for Lifestyle members. That's what happened to Bally Total Fitness members when LA Fitness acquired the chain last year. Bally members even filed suit in federal court claiming that LA Fitness would not honor their lifetime memberships.

"You have a lot of members wondering, 'Am I being transferred to the nearest LA Fitness? How are my rates going to change?' " Goldman said. "It's going to be a long process. I can see where a lot of members won't be happy."
