Testosterone: The Miracle Drug That Could Solve All Your Problems – The Federalist

An excerpt from Abigail Shriers Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters, published June 30.

Alex Bertie, a British female-to-male YouTuber, and perhaps the most popular (he has over three hundred thousand subscribers), vlogged about his first year on testosterone: This is the day I never thought would come, enthused boyishly adorable, scruffy-jawed Alex. Im officially one year on testosterone. Before hormones, I was struggling with severe self-hate, jealousy, and just the urge to isolate myself from everybody Now, a year after starting hormones, I couldnt be happier. The changes from testosterone really have improved my quality of life and just made such a difference in shaping my future.

His voice has deepened. Hes sprouted body hair and a beard. His shoulders are broader, his arms are bigger, his jaw squarer. His fat is redistributed (less in the thighs and hips). And perhaps most thrilling of all: his periodgone. Luckily, after two months on T, mine completely stopped, thank God. Within the last year, I also had top surgery. Now this is its own thing. I can make a million videos about how much top surgery has helped me. But hand-in-hand with hormones, this seriously just wiped away my dysphoria. So all in all, testosterone has been pretty amazing.

Because of the mercurial and subjective nature of the trans identity, tension naturally arises about who is really transor trans enough. For that reason, testosterone can be an important means of establishing ones bona fides. As Chase Ross puts it in his Trans 101 video series, testosterone brings more legitimacy to your transition. But then, Chase rushes to reassure: the legitimacy of your transition is how you define your transition.

Not every trans vlogger shares Chases moderation.

Male-to-female Instagram guru Kaylee Korol, a blue-eyed and blue-haired waif who seems like an average teenage girl, offers this trans tip: [Y]ou dont need to be a hundred percent sure youre trans to try hormones, you dont, Kaylee assures viewers. You can try hormones for three months. After three months there starts to be permanent effects, but until around then you can just try hormones and see how you feel. Its great, its that easy. Hormones arent as scary as everyone makes them out to be.

You dont have to be certain youre transgender in order to go on hormones. In fact, Kaylee adds, going on hormones is probably the best way to actually tell if youre trans anyways.

You might have heard that testosterone comes with bad side effects but youll rarely hear them mentioned here. YouTube and Insta gurus are about fun, and increased risks of various cancers and prophylactic hysterectomy are certainly not that. The most common side effect of testosterone that gurus talk about is the one that burnishes their trans bona fides: pain. The pain is acknowledgedeven conveyed with relish. Like a barefoot dash across fiery coals, braving the agony of an intra-muscular injection proves youve moved beyond playing dress-up. You really are trans. And youre not messing around.

So basically I lay down on this little chair thing, with my butt hanging out, an obviously female Alex Bertie vlogged at age seven- teen, documenting her first injection of testosterone. A nurse shoves a needle in, and Im kind of like, Uh, uh, that hurts a little bit more than I thought it would. There was like a spike of pain. And then as she injects it, the pain kind of like goes up a little bit, just slowly increasing. Alex Bertie was more than up to the test: Im not going to lie, it hurt. It f*ing hurt.

But you cant join a church without a baptismcant claim to be blood brothers unless you spill a little blood. This is the trans bar mitzvah, and it is joyously undertaken. Pain is proof of commitment to the cause. Obviously its a bearable pain and completely worth it, Alex Bertie reassures his viewers, before exclaiming, Yeah, Im on testosterone! . . . Im not pre-T anymore! You can almost hear him address his YouTube congregation: Today, I am a man.

The Outpost latest installment of war as hell – Boston Herald

MOVIE REVIEW

THE OUTPOST

Rated R. On Amazon, VUDU, iTunes Apple TV and other VOD platforms.

Grade: B

Among the subdivisions of the war movie is the Alamo-theme, in which soldiers usually hopelessly outnumbered trying desperately to stay alive, defend an indefensible position (often in an indefensible war) and even triumph against incredible odds. Among such films that we have seen are, of course, John Waynes unabashedly patriotic The Alamo, the Korean War-set Pork Chop Hill, the magnificent and horrifying German film Stalingrad, and the Mel Gibson-fronted Vietnam War movie We Were Soldiers.

Now, we have Rod Luries The Outpost, a drama about the Oct. 2009 Battle of Kamdesh, when 300 heavily armed Taliban fighters descended, literally, upon an American outpost in the Hindu Kush named Combat Outpost Keating. The film is based on the non-fiction book The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor by CNN Washington correspondent Jake Tapper. The action starts before the battle. First Lt. Benjamin Keating (Orlando Bloom, whose British accent does a jack-in-the-box) is the camp commander until he is not and replaced. One of the soldiers, maybe Staff Sgt. Ty Carter (Caleb Landry Jones, whom I have resisted, but he is great in this), points out that the outpost has a serious problem in terms of defensibility. It sits in a spot encircled by foothills that look down upon it. In other words, the outpost gives enemies the upper hand by giving them the higher ground. What idiot said build an outpost here? Can we have him court-martialed retroactively?

Scott Eastwood in 'The Outpost.'

Caleb Landry Jones in 'The Outpost'

For the first hour or so, The Outpost is your average war movie, waiting for the real action to start. Soldiers speak in the cynical, profanity-laden language of the military at war. Dont think about your wives, newcomers are advised. Staff Sgt. Clint Romesha (Scott Eastwood) is the most natural leader. Soldiers express love for one another. Grunts burn trash and complain about how theyre going to get cancer from it, and they are probably right. Every now and then, bullets rain down upon Camp Keating. The Americans return fire, but its hard to see behind the rocks and ridges. Eventually, mortar operators in the pit loft a powerful, accurate round at the enemy insurgents and the firing stops.

Israeli-born, West Point graduate Lurie (The Last Castle, the misguided Straw Dogs remake) makes films heavy on testosterone, even when theyre female-fronted. But his dialogue is usually smarter than the war-movie cliches we hear in this film (Tappers book was adapted by Eric Johnson and Paul Tamasy of Patriots Day). The officers have meetings with village elders, who will turn out to be mostly treacherous. One of the elders points out to the officers that the English, Russians and Americans invested 40 years and incalculable wealth into subduing Afghanistan and have failed.

But when the actual battle begins, The Outpost becomes a beautifully made, utterly terrifying and exhilarating war movie. Like the first 20 minutes of Saving Private Ryan, this is the best part. Seeing what these brave young men will do to save their fellow soldiers under a hail storm of bullets and explosives is stirring.

The film oversells its case when it tells us about the medals won by these soldiers, many of them posthumously. Yes, they fought and died with valor. But in the end, The Outpost is like Catch-22 without the laughs or the ever-more relevant insights about war.

(The Outpost contains extreme, war violence, profanity and lewd language.)

Will These Penny Stocks Bring Fireworks After The 4th? – Penny Stocks

3 Penny Stocks Powering Into The Weekend

With the long holiday weekend, penny stocks are sure to be on the list of things to look for. The fact is that weve seen a huge uptick in retail trading of small- and micro-cap stocks recently. So it seems fitting to look for a few of these stocks under $5 while theres plenty of down-time to research.

Overall, the stock market has been extremely volatile. No matter what you think of geopolitics, the price of gold, or the recent stimulus money, this market is trying to aggressively recover. Hopes are high that the economy can continue reopening. However, theres no denying the coronavirus has wreaked havoc on a clear action plan.

Some states and cities are slowly reopening in phases while others are walking back due to new cases. Hospitals in at least two Texas counties are at full capacity heading into the holiday weekend. Reports cite that county judges are urging residents to shelter in place.

Meanwhile, new curfew orders are back in force in cities like Miami as well. For some people, theyre listening to mixed messages from Washington and theyre deciding they dont need to wear a mask, Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber told Fox News Neil Cavuto in an interview on Cavuto Live, Saturday.

What will this mean for markets on Monday? As weve all come to know and love, the trends tend to go by the day. So, depending on how investors digest the information over the weekend, that will likely dictate the opening scene next week. Regardless of coronavirus, weve seen many penny stocks to buy and sell heading into the weekend. Many of these hadnt seen trading momentum like this in months.

But again, weve got a whole new group of retail traders driving markets right now. Theyre more focused on trading volume than on the companies themselves. We saw this, first hand, with companies like Hertz and JC Penney, both of which filed for bankruptcy earlier this year. Yet their share prices soared for a brief moment as gun-slinging traders bought into hype-fueled action. With this in mind, its important to have a plan of action going into your trades next week and in the future.

Blinding going in on a trade just because YOLO isnt the best way to become consistently profitable. Understand the risks involved, set your sites on profit targets, and keep in mind whats driving momentum. Whether its news or plain market hype, youll be well-equipt to make money with penny stocks when you know why theyre moving the way they have.

Lipocine Inc. (LPCN Stock Report) has been in recovery mode this year. If you remember back in February when we started following LPCN stock more closely, the company was still licking its wounds from a huge miss from its TLANDO treatment. The oral testosterone product candidate for testosterone replacement therapy didnt meet 3 endpoints in its study. That was when LPCN stock dropped from over $2.80 to under $0.40.

[Read More] 4 Biotech Penny Stocks To Watch After Key Updates This Week

Fast-forward to the second quarter and the company has been working on advancing its pipeline further. In May Lipocine received RDA clearance for an investigational new drug application for a Phase 2 study of LPCN 1148. This is a prodrug of bioidentical testosterone to treat liver cirrhosis. Furthermore, the company reported results of a preclinical study of its LPCN 1144 which demonstrated encouraging results according to the company. H.C. Wainwright took notice of these milestones and increased its price target on LPCN stock to $3 while maintaining a Buy rating.

But since then, there hasnt been much from the company as far as news is concerned. The last filing that was made in June was an 8-K showing results from its shareholder meeting. Also, if you take a close look youll see that theres been some insider buying going on in June. A number ofFORM 4s filed, show that directors were buying stock last month. On July 2, LPCN stock began trading higher late in the afternoon without any apparent catalyst. However, shares have steadily climbed since late February. Since the 24th, LPCN is up over 160%.

Its exciting when you get to see a company evolve from very little into something much greater. In my opinion, we have been following Waitr Holdings (WTRH Stock Report) since its early day. What was more of a skeptical play on Uber Eats or Postmates has actually evolved into a story that investors have gotten behind. Thats especially true as stay at home orders boosted attention on food delivery companies.

Last November was when we really began digging into the driving force behind Waitr Holdings. Shares had just reached 52-week lows and there were more questions than answers as to the future prospects of the company. However, as fait would have it, management sunk its teeth into the company identified that it was lax in its efforts and focused on building the business moving forward.

Specifically, Adam Price, CEO at the time said, Moving forward, you should expect to see steady improvements in cash flow compared to the past several quarters. You should also expect to see a refocus on existing markets where there is a strong user base, great brand awareness and still a lot of growth potential.

As many have seen WTRH stock has been steadily on the move ever since. Most recently, Waitr announced that it would be expanding its Louisiana footprint. The company hired a total of 225 customer service and dispatch team members in the state since January. Furthermore, after Carl Grimstad took over at Waitr in January 2020, the company has implemented strategic initiatives around service and profitability. These initiatives along with others have led to improved revenue and Waitrs first ever profitable month in February of this year.

Cinedigm Corp (CIDM Stock Report) has also benefited from mandates during coronavirus quarantine. June was a big month for CIDM stock and to be honest, the big move we discussed on June 3, could have easily been a case of the 1-day penny stock breakouts. But that move continued even higher the next day. At the time we started following the stock, CIDM shares traded around $0.75. It had already enjoyed a jump in May and like most illiquid stocks (at the time) expectations werent extremely high for a continuation. But as we know, Genius Brands breakout this year had traders looking for sympathy plays & Cinedigm may have initially been one of them.

Cinedigm acquired all North American distribution rights to Cotton Films EVERYDAY MIRACLES in late-May. Following this, the company announced a strategic partnership with SpringServe, the leading ad serving platform for over-the-top and connected TV. It also expanded its distribution of The Bob Ross Channel on Roku (ROKU Stock Repor). What added more fuel to the fire a partnership with Vewd. According to Cinedigm, Vewd is the worlds largest Smart TV over-the-top provider and will now offer Cinedigms portfolio of entertainment networks. But following these big updates, CIDM stock has been free-falling a bit. After reaching $6, shares pulled back as low as $1.67 last week.

[Read More] Is The US Government Investing In Penny Stocks? $700M Could Say Yes

Before the holiday weekend went underway, however, CIDM stock started rebounding late Thursday afternoon. This came after the company announced its next earnings date. Cinedigm reports Q2 figures on July 6th. So if this is one of the names on your list of penny stocks right now, keep this in mind. Speculative momentum can be a factor going into earnings. But the devils in the details. A positive result may bode well for the market but as weve seen, lackluster earnings can put a damper on short-lived bullishness.

Forming genitals in boys requires complex dance between genes and hormones – University of Wisconsin-Madison

The most common congenital disorders of all, especially in baby boys, are differences in a newborns sexual anatomy that is not standard female or male. In boys, they include undescended testicles, misplaced urethras, and improperly developed internal organs.

Some of these disorders may be treated with surgery and some also with hormonal supplementation. Scientists are troubled because the incidence of these disorders is increasing, especially in developed countries. While causes are unknown, researchers suspect that endocrine disruptors from environmental contaminants may be involved.

Joan Jorgensen

Its hard to know how something goes wrong if you dont know how it goes right, says Joan Jorgensen, a professor of comparative biosciences in the University of WisconsinMadison School of Veterinary Medicine.

So, Jorgensen, lead author Anbarasi Kothandapani, and others have set out to understand how functional reproductive systems are formed. Over several years, they studied how one gene, GLI3, coordinates the precisely timed development of the male reproductive organs. Using a mouse model, they discovered that GLI3 promotes the growth of the only cells capable of producing male hormones in a fetus. Without enough of those cells, development goes awry.

The researchers published their findings June 4 in the journal PLOS Genetics. Their works helps us understand how genes and hormones interact to develop male reproductive systems, a step toward researching why disorders in these organs have become more common and how we might prevent them.

The Jorgensen lab has long studied male and female sex differentiation in developing mice. Altogether, a male fetus must successfully have testes descend toward the scrotum, differentiate external genitals, and develop internal organs such as the prostate. Much of this process is controlled by a genetic pathway whimsically named Hedgehog after the gene was discovered in flies covered in bristles and hormones. The two most important hormones are testosterone and another named INSL3.

The GLI3 gene is part of the Hedgehog gene pathway and mutations in the gene are linked to reproductive tract disorders in humans. To study how GLI3 works, the Jorgensen lab turned to a line of mice carrying a mutation that models human mutations in the gene. In mice, the mutation is lethal before birth, so they had to study its effects in developing embryos.

The first thing we wanted to do was see if they had the same reproductive organ phenotypes as human patients, says Jorgensen. These problems include undescended testicles and disorders in urethra placement.

The mutant mice had several defects similar to humans with mutations in the gene. They experienced delays in the descent of their testicles within their abdomens And in about half of the mutants, the urethra opened at the base of the penis instead of at the tip.

Suspecting a problem with the hormone-producing cells called Leydig cells, the researchers examined the testes. Although mutant mice had typical-looking gonads, Jorgensens team saw their testes had fewer Leydig cells and these cells even grew weaker as the embryos developed.

We concluded that the cells started off okay, but they werent able to maintain their identity and they lost their function, says Jorgensen. Over time, they werent able to increase the amount of androgen synthesis needed to make sure everything develops properly.

The researchers discovered that the Hedgehog pathway, through GLI3, stimulates the formation of Leydig cells, which produce the hormones necessary to develop male sex organs. And those hormones go on to reinforce the Hedgehog pathway, which is vital for developing the prostate and penis. They concluded that most of the defects in the mutant mice could be explained by dysfunctional Leydig cells.

Treating pregnant mice with extra testosterone wasnt enough to correct all the defects, because the GLI3 gene was itself necessary, especially for producing a normal penis. But when the researchers reintroduced the non-mutant GLI3 gene into the mutant testes in culture, they were able to restore production of genes necessary for the production of testosterone.

The upshot is that researchers discovered a complex dance between genes and hormones. Any misstep in the waltz can spell disaster.

There are several environmental disruptors out there that will impact the Hedgehog pathway. When you put that together with genetic mutation, it could make some individuals more susceptible to developmental disorders than others, says Jorgensen.

This improved clarity in how the genes are supposed to function could help researchers understand how environmental toxins might be to blame for a rise in sex development disorders. That understanding is the first step toward prevention.

How ‘peer contagion’ may play into the rise of teen girls transitioning – New York Post

In the last decade, diagnosis of gender dysphoria severe discomfort in ones biological sex has exploded across the West.

Between 2016 and 2017, the number of gender surgeries for natal females in the US quadrupled; in the UK, the rates of gender dysphoria for teenage girls are up 4,400 percent over the previous decade. An ailment that typically began in early childhood, and overwhelmingly afflicted males, suddenly has a new dominant demographic: teenage girls.

In 2016, Brown University public health researcher Lisa Littman was scrolling through social media when she noticed that a group of teen girls from her small town in Rhode Island all from the same friend group had come out as transgender.

Intrigued by the statistical unlikelihood, Littman began to study the phenomenon and, in 2018, published the results. She hypothesized that transgender identification had become one more peer contagion among adolescent females. Anxiety-ridden, middle-class girls who once engaged in cutting or anorexia were now wearing binders (breast-compressing undergarments), taking testosterone and undergoing voluntary double mastectomies

I have interviewed over four dozen families whose teen daughters became caught in this current. Their stories follow a pattern: A girl never expresses any discomfort with her biological sex until puberty, when anxiety and depression descend. The girl struggles to make friends. She immerses in social media and discovers transgender gurus. Or her school holds an assembly celebrating gender journeys, or hosts a Gay-Straight Alliance club pushing gender ideology. At first, she tries out a new name and pronouns. Her school encourages her, keeping all this a secret from her parents. Then, she wants more.

So many women were once tomboys, as I was inhabiting femininity itchily, like the floral dress your mother made you wear. But tomboy doesnt exist anymore, as any teenage girl will tell you. In its place is an endless litany of gender categories, from agender to non-binary, gender fluid to trans. Imperfectly feminine girls are encouraged to consider their options.

As author J.K. Rowling recently wrote in a blog post that caused an uproar (but had many women nodding their heads): If Id found community and sympathy online that I couldnt find in my immediate environment [as a teen], I believe I could have been persuaded to turn myself into the son my father had openly said hed have preferred.

Ive spent the last year meeting transgender adults, trans-identifying teens and their parents, as well as experts in gender dysphoria, gender therapists, public school teachers, gender surgeons, endocrinologists and detransitioners young women who medically transitioned to the opposite sex, only to regret it.

While studies of detransitioners are only now being done, and numbers are hard to obtain, the detrans group on Reddit has nearly 13,000 members.

One detransitioner, Desmond, said her use of testosterone brought on severe uterine pain and necessitated a hysterectomy. No one really helped me at that point, she said. They were so easy to the pushing of hormones, of putting the thought of surgery in my head, of Yes, this will make you happier, this will make your life easier, this will get rid of your depression, this will help you become your true self rather than treating it as a way of escaping myself before really coming to terms and finding my true self again.

Our culture has both made womanhood less appealing and also greased the skids toward social and medical transition for confused teens in genuine pain. Public schools peddle gender ideology with a fervor that would make a preacher blush. Transgender social-media gurus tout the euphoria testosterone produces, and Planned Parenthood is one of the largest suppliers of testosterone and they do apprise of the risks, but on an informed consent basis. (Meaning, no therapist note is required and you leave the clinic with a very serious drug based essentially on the patients self-diagnosis.) Hundreds of plastic surgeons are happy to offer medically unnecessary double-mastectomies to girls as young as 16 without so much as a therapists note.

Teens today spend far less time in person with friends than any previous generation. Most of their social life occurs online, where feelings of inadequacy run wild and the challenge of making and keeping friends never lets up. One of the surest ways to win friends and followers is by declaring a glamorous new gender identity, and so they do. Anything to feel lonely no more.

But for many of these girls, the new identity provides no cure. The distress that catalyzed their gender journeys remains. There is no hack for adolescence. We push and scream through its blinding confusion because there is no choice but to grow up.

How to Fight PCOS with Diet and Nutrition – Scientific American

Unfortunately, Angie, you've got plenty of company. Polycystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS, is a condition that affects up to 1 in 10 women of child-bearing age. In a nutshell,PCOSis characterized by hormonal imbalances, involving not just the reproductive hormones (like estrogen and testosterone) but also hormones that regulate blood sugar, fat storage, and appetite.

Symptoms of PCOS may includepainful or irregular periods, acne, abnormalhair growth, increased appetite, weight gain, and difficulty losing weight. Women with PCOS often develop metabolic syndrome, which increases your risk of heart disease and diabetes. And the reverse is also true: Women with metabolic syndrome are more likely to develop PCOS. PCOS is also a leading cause of infertility.

PCOS is strongly linked with obesityand as obesity levels have risen, PCOS has become a more common diagnosis. But there are also lean women who suffer from PCOS. Almost all women with PCOS, however, have some degree of insulin resistance, which is also known as pre-diabetes.

Thefirst-line therapy for PCOSis a diet and lifestyle makeover with the primary goal of improving the bodys sensitivity to insulin. Here are 3 ways to start on a virtuous path.

Tip #1: Lose weight (if you need to)

Weight loss improves insulin sensitivity and you dont necessarily have to reach your goal weight to get this benefit. Even a modest amount of weight loss can begin to reverse symptoms of PCOS. For example, if you are 50 pounds overweight, losing 10 pounds can make a big difference in your PCOS symptoms, even though you might still be significantly overweight.

Above all, you want to lose weight at a pace you can maintain long-term. Crash diets that produce fast weight loss followed by the inevitable rebound weight gain do more harm than good.

Tip #2: Be more active

Exercise is also a great way to improve insulin sensitivity. It also helps rebalance reproductive hormones. As a bonus, it can also help with weight loss. A combination of aerobic exercise (anything that gets your heart rate up for 30 minutes a day) and strength training will work best.

Tip #3: Eat regularly but not too frequently

Although some people claim thateating every 2-3 hoursis ideal, spacing your meals outmore can help improve insulin sensitivity. Instead of having a small meal or snack every few hours, try to get used to eating a more substantial meal and then waiting 4-5 hours before eating again. For tips on how to choose foods that will keep you full longer, review my episodes onsatiationandsatiety.
