Fitness retreats offer time off at a different pace

By Frances Robles, Special to the Times Frances RoblesTampa Bay Times Posted: Mar 01, 2012 05:36 PM

Alicia Stevens has nothing against a good pia colada. But when the 30-year-old yogi entrepreneur imagined the vacation she always dreamed of, she thought wellness.

Stevens is among a growing number of Florida fitness experts who have designed vacation packages for the tourists who crave more from their time off than simply laying around on a beach. Her Sarasota Flow into Fullness Retreat program features sunrise yoga, meditation, a cooking class, a writing workshop as well as seaside pleasure.

"It will be more than going to the beach and checking out," Stevens said. "You'll be checking out of life, but checking into yourself. I want people to explore parts of themselves they haven't looked at yet."

Stevens' inaugural yoga retreat, in December at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Sarasota, is among the first of the season's flurry of fitness vacation options. The state known for vast beaches and massive theme parks is increasingly offering more alternatives for people who would rather have a downward dog than a beachside umbrella drink.

From St. Augustine to Key West, several luxury resorts and small business operators are offering packages that include daily exercise, yoga and meditation. Activities range from hardcore boot camps to aromatherapy workshops all in a quest to tap into a global market of health-conscious people who are put off by all-you-can-eat buffets.

Prices range from $1,500 to $6,000 a week, accommodations and (health) food included.

A 2010 Stanford Research Institute study estimated that wellness tourism is a growing $106 billion industry. While many countries are gaining reputations as destinations for medical tourism, the study said the global market for wellness tourism was twice as big.

The International Spa Professionals Association says the number of spas worldwide grew from 5,700 to 19,900 in the past decade, an indicator that fitness has become an important choice for vacationers.

"People don't want to go home from vacation feeling worse than when they arrived, or feeling that they need a vacation from their vacation," said Margot Rutigliano, founder of the Bella Boot Camp, a fitness retreat at the Marriott Hotel in Delray Beach. "The active fitness vacation is really gaining speed. It's great for women and groups of women. We have a lot of couples do it together."

FitWall Vertical Fitness Training opens first Canadian Studio

Time-efficient, certified-trainer-led 'workouts on the wall' are newest global fitness breakthrough

TORONTO, March 22, 2012 /CNW/ - FitWall Canada has opened its flagship studio, the first in Canada, offering a new breakthrough Vertical Training modality for unprecedented weight loss and gains in strength, balance, and flexibility. FitWall allows users to incorporate plyometrics, suspension, resistance band, turbo bar, and compression training into their routines without moving to another piece of equipment. Its benefits exceed any other type of training apparatus and can be as intense as the user makes it, yet also very safe. It's huge for fitness. Top industry gurus say it's the next big thing! With Certified FitWall Trainers supervising 30-minute workouts, both the cost and the time involved are far less than the typical workout with a personal trainer - with better results.

Now more than ever, those with active and busy lifestyles are in need of fitness solutions offering the most effective results in the least amount of time. FitWall Canada is confident that people can enhance fitness while conserving their most precious resource - time! At least 25-35 per cent of your fitness centre time is spent moving from one piece of equipment to another but at FitWall, this time is saved with a workout in one place.

Vertical Training, unique to FitWall, uses many muscles in every movement by taking a participant from the horizontal plane to the vertical plane. By stepping up no more that six inches onto the FitWall, with no other support or stabilization, the body is forced to turn on all muscles, from fingers to toes. This ignites the muscles and causes more calories to burn in a short period of time -in as little as a half hour.

"The consistent results trainers achieved for FitWall clients around the world have been astonishing," said Bonnie Goldmacher, Founder, FitWall Canada. "We are working hard to bring FitWall here because it is the only truly innovative -- really, really innovative -- thing in fitness in a long time."

FitWall allows certified trainers to put clients through a rigorous workout in a fraction of the time, with low to no impact on the joints, compared to traditional equipment. People with joint issues will benefit from FitWall.

The studio is located conveniently at 6175 Highway 7, Vaughan, Ontario, L4H 0K9, just north of 407 on Highway 7 at Highway 27. For more information, visit fitwall.ca or contact us directly at 416.710.8255 or info@fitwall.ca.

Motorola Mobility fitness device adds golf version

A version of Motorola Mobility's MOTOACTV fitness device will start shipping April 1. (Handout / March 22, 2012)

7:52 a.m. CDT, March 22, 2012

The Libertyville-based company introduced the MOTOACTV last year. The small gadget, which runs on the Android operating system used in mobile devices such as smartphones, is part of a growing category of fitness technology designed to give consumers more robust and user-friendly data about their physical activity and weight-loss efforts.

The MOTOACTV Golf Edition uses built-in GPS to measure a player's distance to the green and to hazards. It also tracks statistics such as the number of putts taken. The gadget syncs wirelessly with a website and allows players to see a virtual, satellite-view simulation of a round, including the arc of a ball flight. Scorecards can be shared online with friends.

The product is available for pre-order at the Motorola website and on Amazon. It costs $299.99 and will start shipping on April 1.

Motorola Mobility isn't the only Chicago-area company applying mobile technology to the world of golf. A local startup has developed a product called Swingbyte, which weighs less than an ounce and attaches below the grip of a golf club. Data on each swing are instantly sent via a Bluetooth connection to a smartphone or tablet.

According to Swingbyte's website, the gadget was developed with help from "aerospace instrumentation experts" from the University of St. Petersburg in Russia who have "experience working on Russian drones."

The Swingbyte costs $149.99 and is available for pre-order through the company's website. Shipping starts in April.

Fitness fears for Broad ahead of first Test against Lanka

Colombo, Mar.20 (ANI): Fitness fears surround England fast bowler Stuart Broad ahead of the visitors first Test against Sri Lanka, which is to take place in less than a week.

The Sun quoted a team source, as saying that: "His ankle wasn't brilliant when he bowled. He still felt some discomfort. He'd have hoped for the ankle to be fine after five days but it was actually quite a severe twist."

Team management were due to make a decision on whether he plays in the final warm-up against a Sri Lankan Development XI early this morning.

Broad has had three serious injuries in 15 months - stomach muscle, shoulder and elbow.

This is unlikely to be a long-term problem but could mean he is short of full fitness on Monday for the first of two Tests.

Head coach Andy Flower said: "I don't think it's absolutely necessary for Stuart to play in the final warm-up match, but it's preferable if he is going to play in the Test." (ANI)

Fitness center closes without warning

CALEDONIA, Mich. (WOOD) - Endurance Fitness Center in Caledonia had its equipment taken away over the weekend, but unsuspecting gym members still drove up to find their old gym closed Monday.

One of the members, Brian Finkbeiner, only found a sign telling him the news. He complained no one gave him notice.

"We haven't been told anything about it closing," Finkbeiner told 24 Hour News 8. "Not really happy about it, I'll be honest with you."

The gym's previous owner, Jeni Rummelt, said she sold the gym to Mike O'Dowd and Ben Reynolds. She previously told 24 Hour News 8 the two owe her $120,000.

She said Saturday morning she and about 40 others moved the equipment to a nearby storage facility.

"They have an eviction notice up," Rummelt said. "So we were afraid if we didn't reclaim our assets, what was rightfully ours, that they would be moved."

Reynolds also owned the now-closed Cobblestone Banquet Hall in Caledonia. Earlier this month Target 8 talked to those without a wedding venue, and exposed the lawsuit over the fitness center.

Calls to O'Dowd and Reynolds were not returned.

24 Hour News 8 called a phone number listed on the door. The worker who answered said all contracts are canceled except for those paid in full. He said those members need to go to the Ice House on 100th Street in Byron Center.
