Fitness First ‘close to rescue’

The largest health club group in the world Fitness First is close to being rescued by a private investment fund as it buckles under a 550 million debt burden.

The gym chain, which employs 13,000 people and has 1.2 million members worldwide, is set to fall under the control of Oaktree Capital, the Mail on Sunday said.

Oaktree, which has reportedly been buying up the chains debt and now owns more than a third, is in talks with Fitness Firsts private equity backers BC Partners over a debt-for-equity deal.

Fitness First, which has 430 clubs worldwide, including 140 in the UK, recently warned that it was unlikely to make an 18 million interest payment due this month.

A debt-for-equity swap will see Oaktree take a majority share but will allow BC Partners to keep part of its stake, which might lessen its losses in Fitness First.

BC Partners paid 835 million for Fitness First in 2005, which it has already mostly written off after the company racked up millions of pounds of debts.

Fitness First, along with rival LA Fitness, has found revenues squeezed in recent months because consumers are spending less and budget gym operators are growing.

The chain was paying 144 million in interest on its borrowings each year on revenues of 636 million, it was reported.

BC Partners fired the companys top management team as part of an overhaul, including chief executive Colin Waggett, finance director Duncan Tatton-Brown and UK managing director John Gamble.

Rothschild and veteran restructuring consultant Donald Featherstone, European head of the turnaround practice AlixPartners, were hired as advisers on its negotiations with lenders. BC Partners was forced to pull a planned 1 billion Singapore listing in 2011 after 17 of the 20 previous flotations tanked below their flotation listing price.

In-Your-Face Fitness: Humbled by Los Angeles Marathon training

For a recreational runner, there's no rite of passage as masochistic as running a marathon. We ache for the battle scars: chafing, blisters and psychosis brought on by trying to figure out how to use the GPS watch that's supposed to be a training aid.

I've run several 10Ks but never more than 10 miles in one outing. Just before Christmas, I decided to make the leap to get that marathon monkey off my back.

On Sunday, I'll be one of the 23,000 people running from Dodger Stadium to the Santa Monica Pier in the Los Angeles Marathon.

Lessons learned running a first marathon

I fantasized about finishing in under four hours, which runners would consider respectable for a middle-aged guy like me. But since this was just for fun, I didn't stress about the training. There are marathon coaches, running clubs and articles that provide detailed training schedules for regular folks. As a certified fitness professional, I figured I was fully qualified to put one foot in front of the other. How hard could it be?

Plenty hard, it turns out.

My running schedule was based on two simple ideas: Add distance incrementally and push hard. The goal was to build up to 22 miles by early March, then ease off for the final two weeks before the race to give my body a chance to recover.

To augment the distance training, I planned to keep my conditioning up with a few comparatively short 9- to 12-mile runs each week. Weight training would change to boost endurance: lighter loads and higher reps.

But things didn't go according to plan.

Here's how my training actually progressed (then regressed):

Paris fitness event shows the world how the French get fit

On Friday, Paris's massive Salon Mondial Body Fitness Form'expo opens its doors, with thousands of visitors checking out the hottest fitness trends in France, such as aqua biking, Les Mills cardio series, and Reebok's Crossfit.

Similar to Canada's Canfitpro and the US's IHRSA, the event -- now in its 25th year -- expects to draw some 20,000 visitors and 100 international companies to Paris, March 16-18.

Attendees can check out the latest products and trends, or take classes in a range of popular techniques surging in France and the rest of the world, including Reebok Crossfit, PowerPlate, the ever-popular Zumba, Leaderfit, and the Les Mills series -- the New Zealand-based intense cardio series with classes such as BodyAttack, BodyCombat, BodyJam and others.

Other workshops cover techniques such as Kanga Style, choreographed cardio classes involving jumping on a sport trampoline; Hamac Stretch Yoga, suspension yoga that launched in the US a few years ago but is now making its way to France; and the TRX Rip Trainer, a medium resistance cord for core strength training.

Plus expect to see the newest line of aqua fitness equipment -- a hot trend in France that originated in Italy several years ago and is now fashionable in several European countries as well as gyms in New York and Los Angeles. The premise: indoor group cycling classes on stationary bikes in the pool, for intense workouts relying on water resistance while reducing risks of injuries. Check out new aqua group exercise bikes, new elliptical aquatic trainers, and a resistance underwater trainer for kids called Waterkid.

Fashion will also be key at the event, with brands such as Reebok, Suzana Gateira, Flying Yoga, Nike and Adidas flaunting their latest athletic wear lines.

Some hot topics on the table include "Fast-Fitness" -- how to stay in shape on a tight budget and schedule -- and embracing Web coaching technology and wireless fitness trackers.

To learn more about the event, head to the official website, or stay tuned to Facebook and Twitter for updates.

Fitness test plan for all police

All police officers should be made to take an annual fitness test, with a pay cut for those who repeatedly fail, a review has said.

Tom Winsor, who has carried out the widest-ranging review of police pay and conditions in more than 30 years, said those who fail the test three times should be subject to disciplinary procedures and a pay cut.

Chief constables should be able to make any officer redundant as part of budget cuts, ending the prospect of a job for life, the report said. It also recommended that applicants should be able to enter the police service directly at inspector rank, and, "after rigorous testing", at superintendent rank.

Mr Winsor said: "It is clear that the existing pay system is unfair and inefficient. It was designed in 1920 and has remained largely unchanged since 1978." But he added: "Officers who work on the front line, exercising their powers as constables in the most difficult circumstances, have nothing to fear from this review."

Mr Winsor said: "I think the public will be surprised that after passing a fitness test at the point of entry, except in special units like firearms, physical fitness is not tested again in a 30, 35-year career."

An initial annual test requiring officers to reach level 5:4 on the bleep test should be brought in by September next year, he said.

This is equivalent to an average speed of 5.5mph for three minutes 35 seconds, he said. But this should get tougher by September 2018, along similar lines to the test currently used in Northern Ireland. This includes climbing over walls and pulling bodies and was designed to reflect situations which "police officers do and can become involved in".

In the Metropolitan Police, more than half (52%) of its male officers are overweight, a fifth (22%) are obese, and one in 100 are "morbidly obese", the report showed. For women officers in the Met, a third (32%) are overweight, 16% are obese and 2% are morbidly obese.

Former West Midlands chief constable Sir Edward Crew, who worked on the review, said: "We are not looking for supermen."

Mr Winsor predicted that many officers would welcome the proposals, saying they would see it "as a necessary protection for themselves and the public".
