Jenna Fischer – Jenna Fischer Struggling To Lose Weight After Giving Birth

The Office star Jenna Fischer is baffled by Hollywood mums who slim down quickly - because she's still struggling to lose weight after becoming a mum in September (11).

The actress admits she is desperate to shift the pounds and get her pre-baby body back after giving birth to her first child, son Weston.

She tells Us Weekly, "Let me please stand in solidarity with all of the women who are not a size two six weeks after leaving the hospital. I thought, you read all of the stuff (from female stars) in magazines like, 'Oh, I breastfed my baby and I am so skinny now.' I am breast-feeding my baby and I am not getting any skinnier."

But Fischer, who married screenwriter Lee Kirk in July, 2010, insists she is blissfully content and enjoying motherhood.

She adds, "I think I'm just going to be a little bit bigger for a little bit longer - and that's fine with me. I love being a family. I love going from two people to three people, and it has deepened the bond between me and my husband. We love being together, the three of us. Our little unit."

‘Bod4God’: Pastor urges flock to get fit for Jesus

Virginia pastor Steve Reynolds is preaching a radical message: He says that Christians can glorify God by leading a healthy lifestyle and getting a "Bod4God." TODAY.com's Kyle Michael Miller reports.

By Melissa Dahl

We attempt to lose weight for all kinds of reasons: to impress old friends at a high school reunion, to fit into a favorite pair of jeans, or simply to better our overall health. But Steve Reynolds, head pastor at Capital Baptist Church in Annandale, Va., suggests that better motivation may come from a higher power: Do it for Jesus.

At his church, Reynolds leads a weight loss competition program that has helped his congregation lose more than 12,000 pounds since 2007. Reynolds himself has lost a staggering 120 pounds. "I want to show people -- all types of people, especially Christian people -- that we're made by God, but we're also made for God, and we need to honor him with our bodies," he told TODAY.com's Kyle Miller.

The program -- and subsequent book, with its catchy title, "Bod4God" -- bases its weight loss concept on one of the Ten Commandments: "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." In contemporary Christian churches, this verse is usually interpreted to mean simply, "Put God first." Reynolds believes that some American Christians who struggle with their weight may be unwittingly valuing food over their faith. (He certainly isn't the first to recognize the link between religion and obesity: A study published last March showed that young adults who attended weekly church activities were 50 percent more likely to become obese by the time they reached middle age.) Giving junk food like cheeseburgers and fries too much power over your life undermines your relationship with God, Reynolds says, while expanding your waistline.

Reynolds, of course, isn't the only person in the country to attempt a faith-based fitness program. There is also Christian yoga, Christian tai chi, Christian Zumba and something called Gospel Dance Aerobics. And if you'd rather run or workout at a gym, you can load your iPod with contemporary Christian albums specifically designed for workouts.

Successful church-based programs may work, at least in part, because we generally have more success exercising together than we do on our own. A fascinating 2009 study on Oxford University rowers found that the athletes were able to push themselves through more pain when the team exercised together than when the individuals exercised alone.

In another recent report, researchers used Biblical passages to develop a 12-week lifestyle program for diabetes prevention, and found that nearly half of the overweight and obese African-American participants dropped at least 5 percent of their body weight -- what's more, they successfully kept the pounds off for six months. Parishioners' close ties with each other, combined with a belief that they're losing this weight for a purpose greater than themselves, may explain the program's success. (An added benefit: a church-based weight loss program may reach people who wouldn't seek such a program out on their own.)

"It gives you power to know that you're never alone, that God is with you," Reynolds says. "And that he gives you that motivation and that willpower that you need."

THIN ICE: How To Survive Plunge Through Ice

Aaron Brilbeck Staff Writer

January 31, 2012

DES MOINES—

Monday night, two people were killed when they fell through thin ice in Madison County. Now, water rescue experts with the Des Moines fire department show us how to survive a fall through the ice.

It’s important to stress, with the temperatures we've seen lately, no ice is safe to go on right now.  But if you do fall through--you'll have to act quickly. "You're going to panic right at first," says firefighter Brad Peterson, "You're going to tense, just from that pure shock of the water. So your first thing is to be how to react to how to get out of here and you might not think clearly."

First, calm down...you don't have long to get yourself out of the icy water before your muscles start failing you. "Within minute," Peterson explains, "It's not going to take you long and with this temperature you're probably five minutes. Then the more you struggle it's just going to take away your body heat faster so your muscles will contract even more and you'll lose your strength."

Get yourself to the ice ledge, the edge of the hole where you fell through--take a deep breath and kick your feet while using your arms to try to get up on the ice. Aim for the area you just came from--if that ice held you once it will hold you again. "Get to the edge, try and expand your weight out a little over the hole where you're at and just kinda lift yourself up on it and roll," Peterson says, "And if you fall through just keep doing that, get yourself up and just roll across the ice till you where it's a little thicker and you might be able to walk along."

Firefighters also suggest bringing "Ice-alls" with you. They are chunks of wood with spikes in the ends that you can use to help pull yourself out of the water. "Wear them around your neck anytime you go out or while you're out fishing," Peterson suggests, "This way you can just take them apart, grab a hold of them when you fall through the ice, you just use these to pull yourself out."

When possible--shout for help. If you become exhausted and can't get out--try to keep your forearms on the ice so your clothes freeze to it. That, according to firefighter Brian O'Keefe, may be your last hope. "Get your arms up on the ice and basically you're going to have to hold them still long enough and hope that they will freeze to the ice because at some point you'll go unconscious and if you're not secured you're going to end up going under."

Is your diet right for you?

When it comes to "diet," most people think more about calories than nutrition. Those who are concerned about nutrition often buy into advice given by media-based experts. They may even change the food they eat to match recommended diets, going gluten free or carb free or some other food fad of the moment.

But taking general diet advice from a magazine or TV show guest is similar to listening to some "expert" recommending a size nine pair of shoes — they may fit or they may not, depending on individual foot size.

To get it right, your diet must be individualized personally for you. If you're an athlete, or live an active lifestyle, your body will use vitamins, minerals, calories, proteins and carbohydrates differently than a more sedentary person. In addition, even a personalized diet should change according to circumstances. If you're taking a two-week beach vacation, which will be spent mainly lying in the sun instead of hitting the gym three or four times a week, adjust your diet for the inactivity. Otherwise, you'll be taking home the souvenir of a new layer of fat.

Most athletes know that they need protein to help repair muscles after a hard training session or a competition. But chowing down a platter-sized steak isn't the answer. First, no matter how strenuous the workout or event, recovery doesn't require a large amount of extra protein. Second, any protein not immediately needed by the body will be stored as fat.

One of the vitamins most neglected by athletes is the B complex, consisting of eight different vitamins that are usually found together in food such as meat and fish. B1 (Thiamine) and B6 (Pyridoxine) are specifically required by athletes. Studies have shown that athletes without enough B1 and B6 have lower energy levels and will train or compete less effectively than they do with a sufficient supply. But here's the complicated part: the B complex is water soluble. That means it is quickly flushed out of the body in urine. So eating a meal full of the B complex in the morning won't help you much in the afternoon. Smaller and more frequent meals as well as supplements will help maintain your B level. In addition, taking one B factor alone may be useless if you don't have all the other factors. The body needs them all to metabolize any individual part of the B complex.

Active humans burn lots of calories. The bad news is that this process creates free radicals, which cause both cellular and DNA damage. But our bodies have a natural defense system which neutralizes free radicals, an antioxidant system that's even more developed in well-conditioned athletes. But those who want to ensure the elimination of any free radicals should eat foods high in the nutrients C, E and A. The most easily metabolized form of vitamin A is from red or orange vegetables like tomatoes and carrots.

Finally, water is a necessary part of your diet. Proper hydration should start several days before a competition so that all tissues contain maximum water. If you're getting dehydrated during a workout or long event, you may feel it as a dry mouth or twitchy and cramping muscles rather than thirst. If you need hydration fast, go for cold, rather than air temperature water. Cold liquid is absorbed faster than warmer water, and it also cools your internal temperature, which has been heated up by activity.

Are diet soft drinks bad for you?

Individuals who drink diet soft drinks on a daily basis may be at increased risk of suffering vascular events such as stroke, heart attack, and vascular death. This is according to a new study by Hannah Gardener and her colleagues from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and at Columbia University Medical Center. However, in contrast, they found that regular soft drink consumption and a more moderate intake of diet soft drinks do not appear to be linked to a higher risk of vascular events. The research? appears online in the Journal of General Internal Medicine?, published by Springer.

In the current climate of escalating obesity rates, artificially sweetened soft drinks are marketed as healthier alternatives to sugar-sweetened beverages, due to their lack of calories. However, the long-term health consequences of drinking diet soft drinks remain unclear.

Gardener and team examined the relationship between both diet and regular soft drink consumption and risk of stroke, myocardial infarction (or heart attack), and vascular death. Data were analyzed from 2,564 participants in the NIH-funded Northern Manhattan Study, which was designed to determine stroke incidence, risk factors and prognosis in a multi-ethnic urban population. The researchers looked at how often individuals drank soft drinks - diet and regular - and the number of vascular events that occurred over a ten-year period.

They found that those who drank diet soft drinks daily were 43 percent more likely to have suffered a vascular event than those who drank none, after taking into account pre-existing vascular conditions such as metabolic syndrome, diabetes and high blood pressure. Light diet soft drink users, i.e. those who drank between one a month and six a week, and those who chose regular soft drinks were not more likely to suffer vascular events.

Gardener concludes: "Our results suggest a potential association between daily diet soft drink consumption and vascular outcomes. However, the mechanisms by which soft drinks may affect vascular events are unclear. There is a need for further research before any conclusions can be drawn regarding the potential health consequences of diet soft drink consumption."

Westin Hotels & Resorts Kicks off New Year with Global Roll-out of New Fitness Studios

STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Just in time to cater to the millions of Americans resolving to get fit in the new year, Westin Hotels & Resorts (NYSE:HOT - News) announces a complete refresh of the WestinWORKOUT® program to match the evolving fitness trends among guests and further enhance the brand’s goal of promoting well-being in travel. After conducting in-depth guest research and monitoring workout trends, Westin is transforming fitness facilities at its 186 hotels around the world into highly-designed fitness studios featuring new equipment, blue-light therapy and more. The new fitness studios will roll-out globally throughout 2012.

Floor Space: Spread Out

Westin’s in-house Design Team studied guest behavior and found that the Westin guest desires a more well-rounded, holistic fitness experience, including more options for stretching, yoga and fitness classes. To capitalize on this trend, Westin chose to remove select pieces of equipment that guests were not using as frequently in order to provide more floor space for these types of activities. Finally, versatile pulley machines were added to smaller fitness studios to further maximize space and provide a greater range of workout options.

Customized Lighting: Blue-Light Boost

Westin worked with Philips to create ideal lighting for the re-designed fitness studios and is the first hotel brand to introduce ActiViva Lighting, Philips’ new energizing fluorescent lighting, into its gym facilities. This cutting-edge blue light technology positively influences well-being and will help to make guests feel more alert, awake and energized in target workout areas such as the cardio zone. Additionally, the lighting will be customized in all workout zones to coincide with the type of exercise taking place in each specific area.

Design Aesthetic: Go Natural

The custom-created design of Westin’s new fitness studio, a departure from the typical gym aesthetic, was also driven by the changing trends of how people work out. Instead of black rubber floors, the Westin Design Team chose to use a natural, soft-tone color palette and organic materials including textural woven flooring. Inspired by nature, each fitness studio will also display a full-size art mural entitled “Step Up” – a reflective image of people running up a grassy hill, illustrating Westin’s goal of helping guests leave feeling better than when they arrived.. A built-in entry millwork unit was also added in order to house guests’ essentials, such as towels and water, in one place.

“For a Better You” - Westin’s Elements of Well-Being

The global launch of the new fitness studios joins a host of well-being initiatives recently introduced by Westin Hotels & Resorts. Most recently, Westin launched a brand-wide Associate Enrichment program, introducing the brand’s “Elements of Well Being Platform” to its associates around the world through key touch points. In May 2011, the brand unveiled its groundbreaking “For a Better You” ad campaign that uses artistic imagery to depict the “Elements of Well Being” that help Westin guests leave feeling better than when they arrived. In December 2010, Westin announced an exclusive partnership with New Balance, helping hotel guests overcome the hurdles of exercising on the road by providing New Balance footwear, apparel and fitness program content to its guests to borrow. Later this year, the brand will also be expanding its in-room SuperFoodsRX menu items for breakfast to also include lunch and dinner options.
