Planet Fitness founder brings new club to NE Phoenix area

by Eugene Scott - Jun. 29, 2012 03:52 PM The Republic | azcentral.com

The founder of Planet Fitness is bringing a new health club to northeast Phoenix.

Rick Berks, founder of YouFit, a new fitness center, is opening a location in July.

YouFit is based in St. Petersburg, Fla. The newest location will open in the strip mall on the southeast corner of Tatum Boulevard and Greenway Road.

YouFit hopes to open five more Valley locations, according to its website. Locations in Mesa, Tempe, Gilbert, Peoria and Tolleson are expected before the end of the year. There are locations at 16th Street and Bethany Home Road in Phoenix, 35th Avenue and Bethany Home Road in Phoenix, Glendale and Chandler.

"We've had success really everywhere we've gone. We space them out. It's not an exact science," Berks said. "We do retro fits of buildings and go to different markets and look for sites that will work for us."

The chain has nearly 50 locations under construction nationally.

Like many boutique gyms that have popped up in northeast Phoenix, YouFit markets itself as a fitness center for "regular people."

"Our clubs are geared more to the average person who is going to get in shape," Berks said. "We're more fitness-oriented. It's not geared towards the bodybuilder type or the triathlete or professional athletes."

Bob Glazar, 58, lives in central Phoenix and joined the YouFit at 16th Street and Bethany Home Road after his previous gym raised its rates.

Fat pets a weighty issue

After years of feasting on char siew and abalone, Ah Mao weighs nearly 11kg - more than double his ideal weight.

Ah Mao is accounts officer Lin Miaohui's 11-year-old pet cat. Dry cat food and tuna alone do not satisfy the local short-haired tabby. He meows pitifully when his human housemates sit down to a meal, pawing at their legs for scraps, and turns up the intensity of his 'Puss-In-Boots gaze', says Lin, 29.

Veterenarians and pet experts interviewed say that, with growing affluence, pet owners are over-feeding their dogs, cats, hamsters, rabbits and even turtles.

Ricky Yeo, a dog behaviour expert who runs The Dog Listener Consultancy here, has observed a 20 to 30 per cent increase in the number of overweight dogs at dog-related events in the past three years.

Says Yeo, who is also the president of animal welfare organisation Action For Singapore Dogs: "With increasing affluence, dog owners are treating their pets like children. Dogs are pampered with excessive food and treats. And with owners' busy schedules, these dogs do not get adequate exercise and become obese."

Like overweight humans, obese pets have a higher risk of getting diabetes mellitus, lower urinary tract disease, joint disease and osteoarthritis. They are also more prone to fatty liver, decreased stamina and non-allergic skin conditions - due to the inability to groom efficiently - says Dr Cathy Chan, a veterinarian at The Animal Doctors.

These factors are why obesity can shorten a pet's lifespan.

Dr Hsu Li Chieh from The Animal Clinic warns that a fat dog is less able to regulate its body heat, causing it to suffer more in Singapore's hot climate.

For these reasons, dog-owner Christina Lim wants to help her eight-year-old shih tzu lose weight.

Mango, who weighs 11kg, is slightly bow-legged - a condition that predisposes her to joint problems and can be exacerbated by her weight. Her ideal weight is between 4.5kg and 7.3kg.

International: Lose weight with homophobia!

A link between homophobia and weight loss?

Last month, the delicious tasting cookie brand Oreo posted an image of a rainbow-layered cookie, accompanied with the word Pride in support of Lesbian, Gay Bisexual and Transgender Pride month in the US

In a matter of hours, the gay cookie generated over 100,000 likes and nearly 20,000 comments, ranging from admiration of the brand for promoting tolerance and love and of course quite a few comments calling for boycotts.

Busybody group One Million Moms wrote in their campaign to boycott not only Oreo but their mother ship brand Kraft.

The group said: Kraft needs to hear from you. Supporting the homosexual agenda verses remaining neutral in the cultural war is just bad business. If Christians cannot find corporate neutrality with Kraft then they will vote with their pocketbook and support companies that are neutral.

While overall Oreos support of Pride has been well received, YouTuber Franchesca Leigh Ramsey has come out with a important announcement that finds a link between homophobia and weight loss.

This is great watch below.

Chris Christie Opens Up About His Weight

Jul 3, 2012 6:00am

(ABC News)

TRENTON, N.J. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie opened up about his weight problem in an interview with ABC News and stressed he is trying to lose weight, a battle hes waged for 30 years, but said hes never considered gastric bypass surgery because its too risky.

I mean, see, listen, I think theres a fundamental misunderstanding among people regarding weight and regarding all those things that go into, to people being overweight, Christie said in an interview that will air Tuesday on Nightline. I think folks say yeah, well he must just not be disciplined, you know, or he must not have willpower that kind of thing. I guess the best analogy to make is some people drink too much. Some people take drugs. Some people eat too much. See, you can go live every day without drinking. You can live every day without taking drugs. You cant live every without eating.

Watch ABC News Jake Tappers full interview with Gov. Chris Christie on Nightline tonight at 11:35 p.m. ET.

Christie, who often jokes about his weight, but rarely opens up about the struggle, acknowledged that its a really difficult thing to deal with.

Christie said he works out with a trainer four days a week and is trying to eat better, but said its really difficult like to eat better.

With running around all the time and grabbing things on the go. But Im trying to eat better, Christie said in the interview from the state capitol. Im working at it. But obviously, Im not there. But I also have hope that I can get there.

Christie suffers from asthma and was admitted to the hospital last summer, but said besides that ailment he is healthy and sees the doctor regularly.

Low-Carb Diet Modeled After Atkins Diet Better For Weight Loss Maintenance and Health Markers for Cardiovascular Risk

DENVER, July 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) shows that dieters who had successfully lost weight and were trying to maintain their weight loss burned significantly more calories eating a low-carb diet modeled after the Atkins Diet than they did eating a low-fat diet. In fact, participants following the Atkins-like diet in the study burned about 300 calories more a day on a low-carb diet than they did on a low-fat diet. Additionally, there were several key health benefits experienced by those following the Atkins-like diet, including increased HDL, lowered triglycerides, reduced inflammation from baseline, and improved insulin sensitivity.

The study examined 21 participants, ages 18 to 40, who had lost some initial body weight and each participant completed three different diets in random order for four weeks. One of the diets followed was modeled on the Atkins Phase 1 Induction diet, with only 10 percent of calories from carbohydrates, 60 percent from fat and 30 percent from protein.

According to the researchers, "These findings suggest that a strategy to reduce glycemic load rather than dietary fat may be advantageous for weight-loss maintenance and cardiovascular disease prevention."

"We are very gratified to see the research community continue to study and validate the Atkins Diet. In this study, the investigators looked at Atkins Induction phase only which caused superior energy burn at rest, as well as much better triglycerides, HDL levels, and overall metabolic levels," said Colette Heimowitz, vice president of nutrition and education for Atkins Nutritionals, Inc. "It would have been ideal if the researchers had the funding to follow a longer term protocol which would have allowed the participants to become adapted to fat burning and produce even more favorable results in regard to cortisol and CRP."

Diet tips that REALLY work

These really easy tips go a long way in your battle against the bulge!

Losing weight can be a challenge, especially if you have many pounds to shed. You may have tried weightloss programmes before, but have failed to lose any weight. Everyone is looking for a short cut to lose weight. However, these short cuts never work. You should never crash diet because it's a short term approach that usually fails. You need to be very patient when it comes to weightloss. But finding the time and resources to lose weight can be a challenge.

Many diets don't hold up to all their hype. The true key to losing weight and keeping it off is adopting a sustainable eating plan and then sticking with it. When it comes to weightloss, you have to lose some diet habits which you've grown accustomed to and add some items that may be new to you. Here are some tips to get you started.

Become a vegetarian

This may be a drastic lifestyle change but an effective one nonetheless. Studies have shown that a diet high in red meat consumption is often linked to obesity. If you have been an ardent non-vegetarian, then suddenly stopping meat will not help. Start with alternating between meat and vegetarian food until you are comfortable with ditching it completely.

What's Up Doc: Keep your family hydrated and healthy

Q: With how hot it has been, what should I do to prevent my family from getting dehydrated?

A: The main function of the human body is to provide oxygen and glucose to the brain. Blood carries this oxygen and glucose, and is mostly made from water. So having adequate water in the body is critical for good health.

I think about the bodys fluid composition using my rules of two thirds rough estimate. Over two thirds of our body weight is water. Most of this water is inside the cells of the body, again about two thirds. Of the water not in the cells, about two thirds is in the space between the cells. This leaves 2/3 of the body weight times 1/3 not in the cells times 1/3 not between the cells equals 2/27 (about 7 percent) of our bodys weight being blood; and about two thirds of that is in the veins. Water can easily move from inside the cells to outside the cells to inside the bloodstream, balanced by colloid osmotic (oncotic) pressure that works to keep sufficient amounts in the bloodstream.

The body loses water in many of its normal daily functions; moisture in the air exhaled, sweat to help regulate body temperature, and the fluids used in waste elimination (urine and stool). Electrolytes (such as sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate and others) are also lost (taste how salty sweat is).

Additional fluid and electrolyte loss can occur for many reasons:

- Infants lose more fluids per body weight than adults.

- People with poorly controlled diabetes may have increased urine output.

- People who develop vomiting and/or diarrhea (from any cause) lose fluids and may also have decreased fluid intake.

- Respiratory problems causing fast breathing increase fluid loss.

- Any condition that causes fever may lead to excess sweating.

Celeb Post-Baby Slim-Downs

It seems like every day there's a new celebrity announcing her pregnancythen hitting the runway or the red carpet in a barely-there outfit weeks after giving birth. Hollywood moms have plenty of incentive to get back into shape: Jessica Simpson recently struck a $3 million deal with Weight Watchers to use the program to lose her baby weight, while Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai was criticized for not losing her pregnancy pounds quickly enough. (Her daughter was born in November, 2011.)

"Celebrities work hard and they put the time in, because their career depends on it," said Lisa DeFazio, a nutritionist in Los Angeles. While some stars may resort to surgery or dangerous cleanses, most simply diet and exercisebut have the money to afford personal trainers mail-order meals to speed the process. Here's 13 who bounced back in record time.

Beyonc

Gracing the cover of People's Most Beautiful People issue in April 2012four months after the birth of her first child, BlueBeyonce told the magazine that she was back to her pre-pregnancy weight and felt "more beautiful than ever." In fact, she flaunted her famous curves just weeks after giving birth when she wore a figure-hugging dress to husband Jay-Z's Carnegie Hall concert in February. "I lost most of my weight from breastfeeding and I encourage women to do it; it's just so good for the baby and good for yourself," Knowles told People.

Bethenny Frankel

The Bethenny Ever After Star caused a stir in June, 2010 when she posed for Us Weekly in a size-4 swimsuit just three weeks after giving birth to daughter Bryn. Frankel responded with a statement to the website Momlogic, where she attributed Bryn's early arrival (five weeks premature)as well as healthy eating habits and yoga throughout her pregnancyto her ability to slim down so quickly. Later that year, she told Health she probably still weighed four or five more pounds than she did before pregnancy, but that she was "not even concerned about it."

Pink

"As soon as Pink had the green light from her doctor, we got to work," said Jeanette Jenkins, celebrity trainer and creator of The Hollywood Trainer DVD series, who's also helped Tia Mowrey and Alicia Keyes get their pre-baby bodies back. After the June 2011 birth of her daughter, Pink trained five days a week with Jenkins and followed a healthy meal plan in preparation for her fall tour and her first movie role in the upcoming "Thanks for Sharing."

Gwyneth Paltrow

Losing the baby weight after the birth of her second child in 2006 was "by far the hardest thing I have ever done," Paltrow said in 2010. She worked out two hours a day with the help of celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson, the Huffington Post reported, but also said that time constraints shouldn't be an excuse for any woman not to get her body back. "Every woman can make timeevery womanand you can do it with your baby in the room," she said. "There have been countless times where I've worked out with my kids crawling all over the place."
