Study: Health Benefits of Weight-Loss Surgery Last Years

Just 10 years ago, weight-loss surgery was new, and little was known about the long-term health effects of surgically shortening a patient's digestive tract. A recent study examined whether people can sustain their post-operative weight loss and if their risks for heart attack and diabetes remain low six years after their surgery.

Jody Stubler said she saw great benefits from the weight-loss surgery.

Losing this weight has helped me gain tremendous confidence in myself and my own abilities, she said.

Stubler is 54 kilograms lighter, no Type 2 diabetes, and her blood pressure and cholesterol levels are normal.

There are different types of gastric bypass surgery, sometimes called stomach-stapling.

Dr. Ted Adams, from the University of Utah School of Medicine, led a study of more than 1,000 severely obese patients. One group of patients opted for Roux-en-Y, the most common type of gastric bypass surgery. The rest did not.

During this procedure, the surgeon cuts across the top of the stomach to create a small pouch about the size of a walnut. Food bypasses most of the stomach and enters directly into the middle part of the small intestine.

With a smaller stomach, patients eat less, and so they lose weight. But no one knew if that weight loss and other health benefits could be sustained.

Almost 80 percent all of those patients who had gastric bypass surgery at six years had been able to maintain a very significant degree of weight loss, said Adams.

Those who had the surgery also reduced their risks of heart attack and stroke.

High-fat 'western' diet could lead to atherosclerosis

Washington, October 10 (ANI): A diet high in saturated fat raises levels of endothelial lipase (EL), an enzyme associated with the development of atherosclerosis, according to Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) researchers.

Conversely their study, conducted in mice, found that a diet high in omega-3 polyunsaturated fat lowers levels of this enzyme.

The findings establish a "new" link between diet and atherosclerosis and suggest a novel way to prevent cardiovascular heart disease.

In addition, the research may help to explain why the type 2 diabetes drug rosiglitazone (Avandia) has been linked to heart problems.

Like other lipases, EL plays a role in the metabolism of blood lipoproteins, which are complexes of lipids (fats) and proteins. EL, which is secreted by macrophages (a type of white blood cell) and other cells in arteries, was discovered in 1999.

Studies have shown that elevated EL is associated with atherosclerosis and inflammation. Until now, however, little was known about how dietary fats might affect this enzyme, said study leader Richard Deckelbaum, MD, the Robert R. Williams Professor of Nutrition professor of pediatrics and of epidemiology and director of the Institute of Human Nutrition at CUMC.

In the current study, a strain of mice susceptible to atherosclerosis was fed a normal diet enriched with either palmitic acid (a common saturated fat) or eicosapentaenoic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid, or polyunsaturated fat, found in fish oil, among other foods).

After 12 weeks, the mice's aortas were examined for changes in the expression of EL and inflammatory factors. Aortas of mice fed the saturated fat diet showed a significant increase in EL and detrimental changes in inflammatory factors, while those of mice fed the polyunsaturated fat diet showed a significant decrease in EL and beneficial changes in inflammatory factors. Studies in cultured macrophages showed similar results.

"Our study identifies a new way in which the high-saturated-fat Western diet could lead to the development of atherosclerosis, though, of course, these results need to be confirmed in human studies," said Dr. Deckelbaum.

"The findings might also explain some of the cardiovascular benefits that have been attributed to omega-3 fatty acids," he said.

Ernest Haekel Ebio, CEO of WOD Toys believes that by introducing fitness equipment to kids at a very early age, we instill in them a love of exercising and a desire for a healthy lifestyle. With the obesity rate in children now spiraling out of control, Mr. Ebio felt that this was an ingenious and fun method of helping our kids develop a love of fitness at a very early age.

Recently, Ernest Haekel Ebio had this to say, We continue our quest to help children learn about and love working out, and eating healthy. Our contest encourages the entrants to include one of our toys in their entry photo. Elite Fitness Plus has it all covered for golfers

More and more, golfers understand the relationship between fitness and success.

That correlation prompted Mike Davis, president and CEO of Elite Fitness Plus a 15,000-square-foot training center in Westlake Village to put together a golf-related fitness program designed around the concepts created at the Titleist Performance Institute in Carlsbad.

For more than a year, Elite Fitness has offered its clients the chance to work with TPI-certified trainers. In the program, trainers use a series of tests to identify any physical factors that are limiting a golfer's performance.

Instituting the TPI program was the first step in Davis' plan to offer a complete range of golf programs.

The latest step came earlier this year when the Elite Fitness Plus opened a Golf Lab adjacent to the facility's main workout area. Elite's Golf Lab has all the new-age gadgets, including a launch monitor to test a player's swing speed, clubhead speed and launch angle.

"So many of our clients are into golf that we want to be able to provide them with the tools they need to enjoy the game more," Davis said. "With our TPI program, we were able to help golfers from the neuromuscular aspect, but we needed to add the Golf Lab to be able to offer a comprehensive approach to golf swing. Now we're able to help from the swing analysis end along with the fitness side."

While having the proper equipment is crucial for the program's success, according to Davis the biggest key was hiring PGA Tour instructor Joe Musser to run it.

"He brings so much personality and enthusiasm to the job," Davis said. "This is a service-based industry and Joe is a real people person, who also really understands the golf swing and the equipment we've got here."

Musser found he had a talent for golf early in life. But the daily grind and the belief he felt he wasn't progressing fast enough led Musser to burn out.

He quit golf and moved to Mammoth. For several years he spent his days on the ski slopes, both teaching and skiing. He came down off the mountain and enrolled in a technical school with an eye on working in the IT field.

PhenObestin 37.5 More Effective than Exercise Interventions for Children

In response to two articles published in the September 27 online issue of BMJ that concluded exercise interventions for children were ineffective, PharmaCo Labs recommends that doctors and parents who are concerned about the health of overweight children, consider their over-the-counter weight loss pill PhenObestin 37.5, as part of an overall program of lifestyle changes including diet and exercise.

Germantown, MD (PRWEB) October 09, 2012

The first of the articles published in BMJ reviewed student intervention programs that measured student activity with objective measuring devices such as accelerometry devices. The goal of the programs was to give students additional mandated exercise periods during the week, with the hope that the additional exercise would counteract the obesity epidemic plaguing children of developed nations. The researchers discovered that three 90-minute sessions of mandated exercise that included 60 minutes of vigorous exercise raised the childrens overall level of exercise by only 4 minutes.

Earlier research suggested that exercise intervention did not work because the additional exercise caused children to eat more calories. But the comprehensive review of intervention exercise programs suggests that these programs dont work because they do not actually raise the childrens overall level of activity, supplanting the vigorous after-school activity the children would normally engage in rather than adding to it.

The second article expounded upon the results cited in the first, and called for a more thorough understanding of the overall activity levels of children. They also suggested that children with normal body-mass-index (BMI) values be studied to determine how they maintained their healthy weight.

One way that people with healthy BMI values tend to outpace their less-healthy BMI compatriots is in the level of their metabolism. People with healthy BMI values tend to burn more calories, even at rest, than those with less-healthy BMI values. PhenObestin 37.5 has been shown to boost metabolism by more even than prescription Adipex does.

By including PhenObestin 37.5 in a program of diet and lifestyle changes, children with unhealthy BMI values can lose weight and approach the metabolic levels of children with healthy BMI values. PhenObestin 37.5 also stimulates the central nervous system and increases the overall brain activity level, so it will help the children to remain focused and alert so that they can better stay on their new diet and lifestyle program.

In addition to raising the metabolism, PhenObestin 37.5 also boosts the brains dopamine levels, which helps to reduce mood swings and depression that may be exacerbated by dieting. It helps to burn fat, especially stubborn belly fat, and flushes away the toxins that were trapped in the fat as well as the toxins from the increased metabolic activity in the body. The all-natural pharmaceutical-grade ingredients responsible for these benefits are derived from the cocoa plant, the acacia blackbush plant, and Yohimbe bark extract, and then combined in a cGMP-FDA compliant Indianapolis-based laboratory.

To learn more about how PhenObestin 37.5 can help their younger patients who are overweight or obese, doctors can contact Georgiy Kharchenko at 800-935-6312.

Fat Loss Factor Launches a Brand New Website Complete with In-Depth Fat Loss Factor Review Video

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 10, 2012

Fat Loss Factor, a revolutionary 12-week program that helps people shed unwanted pounds quickly and safely, has just launched its newly-updated website. The redesigned site now includes an interesting and engaging video that explains in great detail how and why the Fat Loss Factor program works.

In addition to the recent site upgrades, Fat Loss Factor is also currently featuring a special deal on its service. People are welcome to try it for just $4.95 for the first 21 days. If they are not happy with the program, they can cancel and walk awayno questions asked.

For people who want to learn how to lose weight fast, the Fat Loss Factor can help them achieve this goal. The program involves a revolutionary approach to weight loss that does not involve crash dieting, appetite suppressant pills, or hours and hours at a gym.

Fat Loss Factor is currently featured in eHealth Magazine, a top online resource for people who are interested in learning more about health. The online magazine, http://ehealthmagazine.net, includes information about which weight loss programs and techniques are helpful, and which ones are not. eHealth Magazine also includes a helpful Fat Loss Factor review, which offers readers an unbiased and helpful look at the program.

Fat Loss Factor was developed by Dr. Charles, a Board Certified Chiropractic Physician, Certified Wellness Practitioner, and noted author and speaker. Dr. Charles came up with a revolutionary approach to weight loss that features reasonable workout routines combined with a healthier diet that allows people to boost their hormonal activity and natural metabolism. In turn, this approach will help them burn fat naturally. The program also includes plenty of helpful resources that people can refer to for help and assistance while they are losing weight.

In this short weight loss presentation I will teach you a somewhat unusual weight loss strategy that can help you get a flatter belly in under 7 days, while still enjoying the foods you love, Dr. Charles explained in an article about the informational video that is featured on the Fat Loss Factor site.

Dr. Charles added that during the educational video, he will share the first tip that he always teaches to his patients in Fishers, Indianaincluding one woman named Lori who lost an impressive amount of inches and dropped an amazing number of dress sizes while on the Fat Loss Factor program.

Lori ultimately lost 90 pounds and I'll share with you 1 tip that helped her get there.

As Dr. Charles explained in his video, the weight loss secret he reveals to viewers is not a gimmick. The key to successful weight loss, he noted, begins in the liver. By getting rid of toxins and helping the liver to work as effectively as possible, the Fat Loss Factor can help people ultimately lose weight once and for all.

Want to Maintain Your Weight? Get Moving

I've always loved to be active. As a kid, I enjoyed ice skating, tennis, and any recreational sport offered at school or camp. I was never a great athlete, but my enthusiasm for participating in so many different activities certainly made up for what I lacked in skill.

Although I remained somewhat active as a teen, it wasn't until I was a young, overweight adult that I began to exercise regularly and consistently. The exercise, coupled with eating smaller food portions and making better food choices in general, helped me lose weight. I'm proud to say I've maintained my weight at about 30 pounds less than what I weighed at my highest weight in high school.

Much of the scientific literature, including a 2009 position paper by the American College of Sports Medicine, finds that exercise does little to induce weight loss. So I took to Twitter and Facebook to ask my followers and friends whether exercise had ever affected their body weight. Although two people said that exercise had helped them lose weight, and one said exercise tended to make her gain weight, most said it helped them maintain weight. (One woman said it even gave her one less hour to eat, which was a good thing!) To my delight, many who responded shared the benefits they derived from exercise. Even if it didn't help them lose weight, exercise increased their energy, lifted their mood, and helped them feel more fit. I couldn't agree with them more!

No matter how exercise affects body weight, one thing is certain: not enough of us are doing it on a regular basis.

A 2011 survey by the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index found that half of Americans said they exercised for at least 30 minutes on three or more of the last seven days. However, nearly three in 10 Americans said they did not exercise at all during that time frame.

Why the excuses? Perhaps some--especially those who have some weight to lose--feel like they have no time for exercise, or that it's just too hard, and they won't enjoy it. But a new study published in the American Journal of Physiology suggests that you need not subject yourself to too much sweat--or even tears!--to lose a little weight and gain the many benefits of exercise.

Researchers from the University of Copenhagen Department of Biomedical Sciences randomly assigned 53 overweight men between the ages of 20 to 40 into one of three groups: a sedentary control group, a moderate-exercise group (in which they completed about 30 minutes of aerobic exercise), and a high-exercise group (in which they completed about 60 minutes of aerobic exercise). Each of the exercise subjects performed activities such as running or biking; on three of the days, they exercised at a higher intensity, and on other days, chose their own intensity. Subjects in all three test groups were asked to consume their usual diet and record their daily intake.

After 13 weeks, the control group experienced no weight changes. But the researchers were surprised when the moderate exercisers lost more weight (about seven pounds) than the intense exercisers, who lost about five pounds. The researchers found that when the high-exercise group wasn't exercising, they moved less than the moderate exercisers, who seemed invigorated by the shorter duration of exercise. Researchers also speculated that the intense exercisers likely increased their caloric intake (and even more than they recorded) to at least partially compensate for longer exercise sessions.

"While it's true that eating less can cause more rapid weight loss, that approach seldom works for long, and weight tends to be regained," says lead researcher Mads Rosenkilde, who notes that the study was relatively short and results cannot be generalized. "It's far easier to stick with 30 minutes a day of exercise than with restricting calorie intake," he adds. Furthermore, emerging research highlighted in a recent article in the Journal of Obesity suggests that physical activity plays a key role in regulating body weight.

So if you're trying to lose weight, consuming a nutritious diet with a few less calories can help, of course. But whether you do that or not, it's wise to heed the advice of James O. Hill, executive director of the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center at the University of Colorado. Get your exercise, Hill says, especially because of its evident role in long-term, weight-loss maintenance. As he tells his patients, "Unless you are prepared to make permanent and substantial increases in physical activity" as part of any overall weight-loss strategy, "you are wasting your time with weight loss." And who has time for that?

Joining slimming group 'best way to lose weight'

London, Oct 10 (ANI): Joining a slimming group could be more effective in shedding the extra pounds, according to psychologists.

Researchers found that the support received at such groups led to dieters losing three times as much as those attending groups supervised by medical professionals, the Daily Mail reported.

The study, funded by the US National Institutes of Health, also found that those attending slimming classes, such as Weight Watchers, lose double the amount of weight than those who followed a strict weight-loss programme set up by a doctor.

The findings suggest that inspiration from someone who has personally had weight-loss success is often more successful than medical programmes set up by GPs.

Group classes which encourage members to share experiences and reach a "goal weight" proved particularly successful, it was said.

In the trial, run by City University of New York, 141 overweight and obese men and women were randomly assigned to 48 weeks of weight loss treatment by a health professional, or 48 weeks of Weight Watchers, or a combined treatment consisting of 12 weeks of the former then 36 weeks of the latter.

The investigators assumed that the combined treatment would produce better weight losses than Weight Watchers alone, but contrary to expectations, Weight Watchers participants had lost more weight at the end of treatment.

In fact, more than one third of the Weight Watchers participants lost 10 percent or more of their starting weight, compared to 15 percent of those in the combined group and 11 percent in the professionally-led group.

The study is published in the journal Obesity. (ANI)
