Exercise may lead to better school performance for kids with ADHD

ScienceDaily (Oct. 16, 2012) A few minutes of exercise can help children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder perform better academically, according to a new study led by a Michigan State University researcher.

The study, published in the current issue of the Journal of Pediatrics, shows for the first time that kids with ADHD can better drown out distractions and focus on a task after a single bout of exercise. Scientists say such "inhibitory control" is the main challenge faced by people with the disorder.

"This provides some very early evidence that exercise might be a tool in our nonpharmaceutical treatment of ADHD," said Matthew Pontifex, MSU assistant professor of kinesiology, who led the study. "Maybe our first course of action that we would recommend to developmental psychologists would be to increase children's physical activity."

While drugs have proven largely effective in treating many of the 2.5 million school-aged American children with ADHD, a growing number of parents and physicians worry about the side effects and costs of medication.

In the study, Pontifex and colleagues asked 40 children aged 8 to 10, half of whom had ADHD, to spend 20 minutes either walking briskly on a treadmill or reading while seated. The children then took a brief reading comprehension and math exam similar to longer standardized tests. They also played a simple computer game in which they had to ignore visual stimuli to quickly determine which direction a cartoon fish was swimming.

The results showed all of the children performed better on both tests after exercising. In the computer game, those with ADHD also were better able to slow down after making an error to avoid repeat mistakes -- a particular challenge for those with the disorder.

Pontifex said the findings support calls for more physical activity during the school day. Other researchers have found that children with ADHD are less likely to be physically active or play organized sports. Meanwhile, many schools have cut recess and physical education programs in response to shrinking budgets.

"To date there really isn't a whole lot of evidence that schools can pull from to justify why these physical education programs should be in existence," he said. "So what we're trying to do is target our research to provide that type of evidence."

Pontifex conducted the study for his doctoral dissertation at the University of Illinois before joining the MSU faculty. His co-investigators included his adviser, kinesiology professor Charles Hillman, and Daniel Picchietti, a pediatrician at the Carle Foundation Hospital in Champaign, Ill. The research was funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

In Burkina Faso, a garden maintained by local women benefits a whole community

OUAHIGOUYA, Burkina Faso, 15 October 2012 - In northwest Burkina Faso, deep in the Sahel belt, a small oasis is beginning to take shape.

Bordering the vast Sahara Desert, the Sahel stretches across the African continent. Eking out any kind of life here is tough, but a group of women are turning their corner of this harsh, arid region into a lush and productive garden. In a place where people survive mainly on nutritionally poor grain millet, the vegetables these women produce are changing their families diets and lives.

Healthy diet

In this area, malnutrition is rampant. Burkina Faso was one of nine countries affected by recent droughts. But even in times of plenty, nutrition is a problem not necessarily because of a lack of food, but rather because of a lack of the right kinds of food. Vitamin-rich fruit and vegetables are expensive, and mothers are often unaware of the importance of these foods to their families diets.

Kientego Sierotta heads a group of 54 women who are transforming the landscape. Shes a mother and works with her 8-month-old baby on her back. After an hour of digging and planting, she takes a break to feed him.

The nutritional situation of children before the setting up of the project was severe, she says. The children were falling sick regularly. But, since we started to work here and the garden started producing vegetables, the children have been less sick, and we have changed our diets.

We couldn't afford vegetables before, Ms. Sierotta continues. Now we can eat them and sell the surplus, and generally the situation has improved significantly.

Community benefits

The women receive training on farming techniques and funding towards the construction of wells. The initiative is part of a 1.7 million euro joint action between UNICEF and the European Union aimed at improving nutrition security. The four-year programme aims to reach almost one and one-half thousand villages across Burkina Faso through various projects and interventions. The programme is not an emergency response mechanism, but rather an effort to improve nutrition security across the country so that when nutrition crises do happen, families, especially children, are better able to handle the impact.

Joint replacement surgery, also called total joint arthroplasty (TJA), is a common procedure for obese patients whose lower-body joints face wear and tear due to excess weight. Joint replacement candidates are often told to lose weight to prevent osteoarthritis, a painful condition where the cartilage in joints is worn away from the stress of carrying too much weight. However, the majority of patients do not lose weight after TJA surgery, as determined in a study published in the September issue of Clinical Orthopedics and Related Research.

In their research, the San Diego State and UC San Diego team assumed weight loss would occur following TJA surgery because mobility and activity could increase with pressure relieved on weight-bearing joints. However, the researchers revealed: "We found no conclusive evidence that weight or body composition increases, decreases or remains the same after total joint replacement."

Although the study is inconclusive because of the small number of participants, Dr. Shabatian said the probable reason TJA patients cannot lose weight is because they do not successfully change their lifestyle after surgery by eating and exercising properly.

The holidays are coming up, and it can be a dangerous trap for those trying to lose weight. However, researchers have found that while diet is an important factor, exercise plays an important role as well. A new study by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Kidney Disease (NIDDK) recently revealed that modest diet and exercise could help decrease body fat and sustain muscle in adults.

The study, conducted under the National Institutes of Health, was recently featured in the online edition of Obesity. The findings showcased that both diet and exercise play a role in weight loss, as opposed to only diet alone. Researchers looked at data from 11 participants of The Biggest Loser, a reality television show on the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) that showcases obese adults who lose weight over a number of months. The scientists specifically studied the impact of a restricted diet and strenuous exercise regime.

By including the shows contestants as voluntary study participants, this research took advantage of a cost-efficient opportunity to study a small group of obese individuals already engaged in an intensive lifestyle intervention, remarked NIDDK senior investigator Kevin Hall, who is unaffiliated with the television program, in a prepared statement.

In the project, the researchers found the body fat, resting metabolic rate (amount of energy that was used during periods of inactivity), and total energy expenditure of participants at the start of the program, during the third week, and at week 30. Week 30 was also the week in which participants returned home after training at an isolated ranch for 17 weeks. The average weight loss in the program was 128 pounds, with approximately 82 percent pounds lost due to reduction of body fat and the other 98 percent based off the preservation of lean tissue. The researchers believe that the preservation of lean tissue brought a number of benefits to the individuals, including maintaining strength and mobility while also lowering the risk of injury.

To calculate the changes in diet and exercise along with the weight loss, the scientists utilized a mathematical computer model that focused on the differences in human metabolism. The computer model looked at the results due to specifically diet and exercise as opposed to other factors that may have been involved. Through an exercise simulation, they determined that participants who adapted moderate lifestyle changes could keep their weight loss and prevent weight gain; these small changes included activities like participating in 20 minutes of daily intense exercise or decreasing calories by 20 percent .

This study reinforces the need for a healthy diet and exercise in our daily lives, remarked Dr. Griffin P. Rodgers, NIDDK Director, in the statement. It also illustrates how the science of metabolism and mathematical modeling can be used to develop sound recommendations for sustainable weight loss an important tool in the treatment of obesity based on an individuals unique circumstances.

The research comes at the right time. According to the NIH, over two-thirds of U.S. adults who are 20 years and older are overweight or obese. As well, over one-third of adults are considered obese. Individuals who are considered obese have a greater risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain forms of cancer.

Fitness trainer arraigned on sex abuse charges involving teen

A former personal trainer pleaded not guilty Monday to charges he sexually abused a Naperville teen in the hot tub at a Warrenville fitness center, among other locations.

Robert Theodore, 60, of the 3800 block of Hagen Court in Woodridge, was formally arraigned on five counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. A DuPage County grand jury indicted him last week.

Judge Blanche Hill Fawell said Theodore could face up to seven years in prison if convicted. The defendant appeared with defense attorney Tim Martin, who has said Theodore expects to be fully exonerated.

Theodore, a former track coach at Lisle High School, was arrested last month on charges stemming from his more recent job as a trainer at Life Time Fitness, 28141 Diehl Road.

Prosecutors allege he inappropriately touched a male client on several occasions when the boy was between the ages of 16 and 18. According to court records, the alleged contact happened at the teens home and Theodores home, and in the hot tub at Life Time Fitness, between September 2007 and September 2009.

Charges were filed after a months-long investigation that began when the family of another Naperville boy came forward with concerns about possible inappropriate contact, prosecutors have said.

Theodore pleaded guilty in the 1980s to the attempted molestation of a 12-year-old boy he met through a youth mentoring program in Arizona, according to prosecutors. He later worked as a track coach at Lisle High School but was fired amid complaints about his interaction with students, prosecutors said.

Theodore, who now works for a wealth management firm in Naperville, is free on a $25,000 bond and scheduled to return to court Nov. 20.
