Is Food Sensitivity to Blame for Expanding Waistlines in the UK?

Leading nutritionist Dr John Mansfield claims that food sensitivity is the reason many people fail to lose weight. The bodyevolution.com website welcomes the new book but is keeping an open mind.

London, UK (PRWEB) October 13, 2012

One of the most successful weight loss secrets is to find out if you are sensitive to any ordinary, everyday foods, Dr Mansfield said. Surprisingly it is common foods that are eaten everyday such as milk, eggs and corn and wheat based products that cause the most problems. He goes on to say that most people are completely unaware that they may be sensitive to certain foods. As they are eaten every day the symptoms they cause such as headaches and fatigue are accepted as part of life rather than being the result of food sensitivity.

A fairly simple explanation of Mansfields theory is that eating certain foods causes an allergic type reaction and interferes with a part of the brain called the hypothalamus. 'When this mechanism is working well, your body weight remains constant, despite quite widely varying calorie consumption from day to day,' said Dr Mansfield. However constant eating of foods that we may be sensitive to interrupts this process making it hard to lose weight.

So rather than the regularly recommended calorie controlled diet and weight loss program Dr Mansfield instead proposes an elimination diet. He claims that dieters can eat as much as they like of low sensitivity foods such as fish, turkey, lentils and vegetables and still be able to lose weight. Foods that are eliminated can be gradually re-introduced to the diet with the exception of the ones that are identified as causing problems.

The weight loss experts at bodyevolution.com say that while calorie controlled diets are not effective for some people it will be hard to lose weight on any diet where you are encouraged to eat as much as you want. There is a simple relationship between the amount of food consumed each day, level of activity and weight that holds true for the majority of people. Anyone who has tried and had success with Six Secrets of Successful Weight Loss is invited to visit the site and share their story.

Nigella Lawson shows how smaller portions can lead to weight loss

NEWBRIDGE, Scotland, Oct. 12, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Nigella Lawson has been showing her Twitter followers that eating smaller portions but still enjoying real food can be a good way for people to lose weight.

The TV chef, who is known for her curvy figure, has recently slimmed down from a size 16 to a size 12 and it seems portion control could be the secret to her success. She regularly tweets pictures of her meals to her 227,041 followers and although she tucks into steak, fried egg sandwiches and pizza, she has small portions to prevent her from gaining weight.

One picture shows a steak with Bearnaise sauce, accompanied by the caption "Grabbing lunch out between interviews. You have no idea how much I need this steak!" However, Nigella exercised portion control by only having four chips with her meat. Another tweet shows a lunch consisting of an avocado drizzled with lemon juice.

Before she started losing weight last year, Nigella stated in an interview: "'I love food and I love cooking so therefore I never deprive myself." Therefore it seems as though portion control is just the way you can have your cake and eat it... just less of it!

Caron Leckie, Nutritionist from Diet Chef said, 'Bigger portion sizes are a major contributor to being overweight or obese and can also be the demise of our efforts to try and lose weight. It's very common for us to know 'what' to eat but putting that into practise and getting the portions right can be the biggest challenge'

Diet Chef is a calorie and portion-controlled meal plan that's delivered direct to your door, making dieting easy. Following the Diet Chef plan, means you can enjoy losing weight, teaching yourself portion control all while still enjoying your favourite foods.

Dieters are not deprived of their favourite foods, they can still tuck into dishes such as lasagne, curries, macaroni cheese, cottage pie and pasta carbonara making it easier and more enjoyable to lose weight.

Clinical studies show people who followed Diet Chef where their meals were portion controlled and they received a diet food delivery to their home were three times more likely to be successful than if they prepared their own meals. Furthermore, over 60 % of those on Diet Chef lost five per cent or more of their body weight compared to only 22% of those who went it alone.

Diet Chef carefully counts the calories of all meals so dieters on the plan will be averaging less than 1,200 calories per day. The daily menu allows you to get delicious home delivered food, as well as offering a tasty and varied, healthy balanced plan encouraging dieters to lose weight at a healthy pace.

Those on the diet looking to check their own progress can do so using the weight loss calculator as well as sharing their weight loss success stories via the website or Diet Chef social media channels.

Competition helps man lose 25 percent of body weight

Greg Dantzler's first inkling that he needed to improve his physical condition was when he had bedtime prayers with his two children.

"I'd get up off my knees and I felt like I was 60," he said. He's 36. "It would take me a couple of minutes to walk that off."

The next was when his doctor threatened to start him on blood pressure medicine as his pressure spiked at times to nearly 150.

"I knew I had to do something; I wasn't ready to take medicine," he said.

He was 212 pounds and 5 feet 8 inches. His energy and activity levels were low, he said.

Around the first of this year, he looked around for a remedy and found a program called Lose to Win. The program is based on the concept that people can lose weight more efficiently when there's accountability.

"The best way to lose weight is to become part of a formal program in which you schedule regular weigh-ins," wrote Dr. Mario Morales, director of the SSM Weight-Loss Institute, for the program's materials. "Having that support helps you remain focused and committed to the behavioral changes that lead to real weight loss."

"I'm a competitive person and that was attractive," Dantzler said.

He signed up for the online program. He was among 1,200 people competing for prizes to be awarded to those who lost the highest percentage of their body weight.

The program didn't give him any methods to lose weight, although some classes were offered during the 12-week program.

Study: Weight Watchers Works Better than Clinical Weight Loss Programs

Good news for people who do Weight Watchers: a study pitting the commercial weight-loss program against professionally directed weight loss treatments found that dieters stuck with Weight Watchers longer and were more likely to lose weight.

Researchers led by Angela Marinilli Pinto, an assistant professor of psychology at Baruch College in New York City, randomly assigned 141 overweight or obese men and women to one of three groups: a behavioral weight-loss treatment led by a health professional; Weight Watchers, whose weight-loss groups are led by peer counselors; or a hybrid program that started with 12 weeks of behavioral weight loss treatment, followed by 36 weeks of Weight Watchers. All programs lasted a total of 48 weeks.

(Q&A: Weight Watchers CEO on the Journey to Weight Loss Boss)

People in all three groups experienced significant weight loss: it didnt matter whether a health professional was running the treatment or not. On average, Weight Watchers users lost just over 13 lbs., compared with just under 12 lbs. for those who lasted all 48 weeks in the professionally led group, and nearly 8 lbs. for people in the combination treatment.

But the Weight Watchers group fared best overall. Nearly 37% of those doing Weight Watchers lost at least 10% of their starting weight, compared with 11% of those in the professionally led group and 15% of those in the hybrid group. The researchers said they were surprised, since they assumed the hybrid treatment would lead to the most success.

Further, the authors found, Weight Watchers members attended more meetings and were more likely to stick with the study to the end than people in the other two groups.

The fact that a program like Weight Watchers can deliver clinically effective results is good news for overweight or obese Americans who may not have access to behavioral weight loss programs led by health care professionals, the authors noted. With almost 70% of American adults classified as overweight or obese, there is a need to provide practical treatment solutions that are effective, accessible, and affordable, said Pinto in a statement.

Many behavioral weight loss programs are run in academic medical facilities and can cost as much as $35 a week. Weight Watchers, on the other hand, costs only about $10 a week and the program is ubiquitous. Its the largest commercial weight loss program in the U.S., with approximately 1.3 million members who spend more than $5 billion on Weight Watchers products and services yearly and attend more than 45,000 meetings each week. In other words, its easy for dieters to find.

The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and published in the journal Obesity.

Group Programs for Weight Loss May Work Best

By Kathleen Doheny HealthDay Reporter Latest Diet & Weight Management News

TUESDAY, Oct. 9 (HealthDay News) -- New research suggests that if you want to lose weight, don't try to do it alone.

"Group-based weight-loss treatment produced weight loss, whether delivered by a professional or peer counselor," said study author Angela Marinilli Pinto, assistant professor of psychology at Baruch College of the City University of New York. "When people are in a group with others on the same journey, they feel there is that element of, 'OK, this worked for him or her, perhaps it will work for me. Perhaps I can give it a try.'"

The research was published Oct. 9 in the journal Obesity.

Pinto and her team randomly assigned 141 overweight or obese men and women to one of three groups.

One group got 48 weeks of behavioral weight-loss treatment from a health professional.

A second group participated for 48 weeks in Weight Watchers, where the meetings are led by members who have achieved and maintained a healthy goal weight.

A third group got combined treatment. They first had 12 weeks of behavioral weight-loss treatment from a health professional, and then transitioned to 36 weeks of Weight Watchers participation.

Pinto said she chose Weight Watchers because it is the largest commercial program in the United States. It is also oriented to behavior change and included information on modifying the diet and increasing physical activity to lose weight and maintain the loss.

Pinto's team was testing the hypothesis that the combination approach would produce a bigger weight loss than going to Weight Watchers alone. Starting with the professionally trained leaders, she thought, would be a good jump start to the weight-loss program.

hCG Diet to Correct Common Dieting Mistakes Announced by hCGTreatments / Diet Doc hCG Diet & Weight Loss Plans

Contrary to antiquated opinion, the best way to lose weight is not to simply remove fat from the diet. Nutritional Science reveals that a well balanced, healthy-fat rich diet aids weight loss and management exponentially. A Customized prescription hCG diet from Diet Doc relies on a well-balanced weight loss diet to enact fast weight loss safely.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 10, 2012

Diet Doc has helped thousands of patients lose weight with their prescription hCG diet plan. Diet Doc's version of the original hCG weight loss diet has been modified from its outdated version to maximize safety and efficacy. Diet Doc nutritionists use a personalized ketogenic diet plan that is combined with therapeutic doses of prescription hCG for each client. Each client will receive numerous weight loss aids including diet recipes, nutritious weight loss shakes, and well balanced weight loss foods to aid in their hCG diet transition without sacrificing nutrition. We chose to implement the ketogenic diet into the original hCG protocol because it makes the body burn unnecessary visceral and subcutaneous fat as a source of energy without depriving it of the necessary food groups, like healthy fats, says Diet Doc Medical Director Dr. Nishant Rao.

hCGTreatments / Diet Doc hCG Diets & Weight Loss Plans offers medical weight loss solutions to dieters that are serious about getting their health on track and want to lose weight fast. Deemed a medical weight loss program because it requires a physicians prescription, the Diet Doc prescription hCG diet plan uses a high dose medical-grade hCG formula that is enhanced with vitamin b12. To this idea, Wright adds, our program is definitely not a fad diet and has even withstood the test of time. We are truly passionate about creating natural and safe weight loss solutions that will give people back their health.

Drink Fruits, Veggies To Lose Weight

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) Want to lose weight? Detoxify your body? Or maybe its hard for you to eat all five servings of fruits and veggies every single day.

If so, you might want to try hitting up a raw juice bar.

The definition of juicing is to extract the juice from fruits or veggies, to liven something up.

Juicing is fast. It goes right to the blood right away, said juice barista Arturo Miles, who serves up glass after glass of pure fruits and veggies every day at the Wedge Co-op in Uptown.

Who doesnt like fast? Juicing is the latest in nutrition trends, and it has people drinking their nutrients through a straw.

Theres lots of benefits. You can get vitamins in your body. Also, people going through the detox process to flush the liver and flush toxins out of the system, juicing is one way to do that, said Miles.

I love to juice. My whole family we love to juice, said Kym Johnson, who swears juicing gives her more energy and keeps her healthy. Oh my goodness, it has so many healing properties. It gives you lots of enzymes that cleanse you, repair.

The juice baristas spend about an hour and a half every morning prepping the fruits and veggies and continue to chop and peel throughout the day. And its no wonder. An entire bowl of greens goes into one 16-ounce green smoothie.

There are sweet versions like Clays Concoction, which is mostly carrots and apple. Miles says he usually suggests that or similar juice mixes for first-timers.

Its very tasty, has lots of vitamins and wont be too much for their palate, said Miles.

Success Found In Weight Loss Programs Led By Peers Or Health Professionals

Connie K. Ho for redOrbit.com Your Universe Online

Researchers studied the effectiveness of commercial weight-loss programs like Weight Watchers and found that they may be as successful in helping participants lose weight as clinical programs; the key to doing well in the program was partnering up with someone else who could provide support.

In a report by US News, the study was described as being conducted over a period of 48 weeks. The study included 141 overweight and obese adults who were randomly placed into three different groups. One group participated in a weight-loss program with a health expert (i.e. a program such as Weight Watchers), another group was led by peers who had lost weight on their own, and the third group was a mix of the two programs. The researchers saw that the individuals lost a significant amount of weight due to change in diet, increase in physical activity, as well as counseling with a health professional or a peer group. The findings of the study were recently published in the journal Obesity.

When people who are working on a similar problem get together, they can support each other so they dont feel alone in this weight-loss journey, explained the studys lead researcher Angela Pinto, an assistant professor of psychology at Baruch College of the City University of New York, in a story featured on the universitys website.

According to ABC News, the people in the peer-based program lost about the same amount of weight (around 12 pounds), but over double the number of people who were enrolled in the Weight Watchers program were successful in losing at least 10 percent of their starting weight as compared to participants in the two other programs. The average weight lost in Weight Watchers was 13 pounds, while the mixed program showed that participants lost about 8 pounds. As such, the researchers believe that Weight Watchers can help individuals lose a significant amount of weight.

The study is the first to look at the differences between a commercial weight loss program and a clinical weight loss program.

We selected Weight Watchers because the philosophy was similar to professionally delivered programs in medical center settings, Pinto told WebMD. They both encourage weight loss through balanced lifestyle change, dietary changes such as consuming a diet high in whole foods and lower in fats, and encourage physical activity,

The researchers found that the people who stuck with one of the programs over a long duration had the most success in losing weight.

With the group idea, theres a sense of belonging, remarked Pinto in the ABC News article on the effectiveness of having a partner in the journey to losing weight. Thats important for people to think about when they want to know what can facilitate sustained weight loss.

Other health experts believe that the group environment is extremely conducive and can help participants stay with the program up until the very end.
