Success Found In Weight Loss Programs Led By Peers Or Health Professionals

Connie K. Ho for redOrbit.com Your Universe Online

Researchers studied the effectiveness of commercial weight-loss programs like Weight Watchers and found that they may be as successful in helping participants lose weight as clinical programs; the key to doing well in the program was partnering up with someone else who could provide support.

In a report by US News, the study was described as being conducted over a period of 48 weeks. The study included 141 overweight and obese adults who were randomly placed into three different groups. One group participated in a weight-loss program with a health expert (i.e. a program such as Weight Watchers), another group was led by peers who had lost weight on their own, and the third group was a mix of the two programs. The researchers saw that the individuals lost a significant amount of weight due to change in diet, increase in physical activity, as well as counseling with a health professional or a peer group. The findings of the study were recently published in the journal Obesity.

When people who are working on a similar problem get together, they can support each other so they dont feel alone in this weight-loss journey, explained the studys lead researcher Angela Pinto, an assistant professor of psychology at Baruch College of the City University of New York, in a story featured on the universitys website.

According to ABC News, the people in the peer-based program lost about the same amount of weight (around 12 pounds), but over double the number of people who were enrolled in the Weight Watchers program were successful in losing at least 10 percent of their starting weight as compared to participants in the two other programs. The average weight lost in Weight Watchers was 13 pounds, while the mixed program showed that participants lost about 8 pounds. As such, the researchers believe that Weight Watchers can help individuals lose a significant amount of weight.

The study is the first to look at the differences between a commercial weight loss program and a clinical weight loss program.

We selected Weight Watchers because the philosophy was similar to professionally delivered programs in medical center settings, Pinto told WebMD. They both encourage weight loss through balanced lifestyle change, dietary changes such as consuming a diet high in whole foods and lower in fats, and encourage physical activity,

The researchers found that the people who stuck with one of the programs over a long duration had the most success in losing weight.

With the group idea, theres a sense of belonging, remarked Pinto in the ABC News article on the effectiveness of having a partner in the journey to losing weight. Thats important for people to think about when they want to know what can facilitate sustained weight loss.

Other health experts believe that the group environment is extremely conducive and can help participants stay with the program up until the very end.

Fat Loss Factor Launches a Brand New Website Complete with In-Depth Fat Loss Factor Review Video

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 10, 2012

Fat Loss Factor, a revolutionary 12-week program that helps people shed unwanted pounds quickly and safely, has just launched its newly-updated website. The redesigned site now includes an interesting and engaging video that explains in great detail how and why the Fat Loss Factor program works.

In addition to the recent site upgrades, Fat Loss Factor is also currently featuring a special deal on its service. People are welcome to try it for just $4.95 for the first 21 days. If they are not happy with the program, they can cancel and walk awayno questions asked.

For people who want to learn how to lose weight fast, the Fat Loss Factor can help them achieve this goal. The program involves a revolutionary approach to weight loss that does not involve crash dieting, appetite suppressant pills, or hours and hours at a gym.

Fat Loss Factor is currently featured in eHealth Magazine, a top online resource for people who are interested in learning more about health. The online magazine, http://ehealthmagazine.net, includes information about which weight loss programs and techniques are helpful, and which ones are not. eHealth Magazine also includes a helpful Fat Loss Factor review, which offers readers an unbiased and helpful look at the program.

Fat Loss Factor was developed by Dr. Charles, a Board Certified Chiropractic Physician, Certified Wellness Practitioner, and noted author and speaker. Dr. Charles came up with a revolutionary approach to weight loss that features reasonable workout routines combined with a healthier diet that allows people to boost their hormonal activity and natural metabolism. In turn, this approach will help them burn fat naturally. The program also includes plenty of helpful resources that people can refer to for help and assistance while they are losing weight.

In this short weight loss presentation I will teach you a somewhat unusual weight loss strategy that can help you get a flatter belly in under 7 days, while still enjoying the foods you love, Dr. Charles explained in an article about the informational video that is featured on the Fat Loss Factor site.

Dr. Charles added that during the educational video, he will share the first tip that he always teaches to his patients in Fishers, Indianaincluding one woman named Lori who lost an impressive amount of inches and dropped an amazing number of dress sizes while on the Fat Loss Factor program.

Lori ultimately lost 90 pounds and I'll share with you 1 tip that helped her get there.

As Dr. Charles explained in his video, the weight loss secret he reveals to viewers is not a gimmick. The key to successful weight loss, he noted, begins in the liver. By getting rid of toxins and helping the liver to work as effectively as possible, the Fat Loss Factor can help people ultimately lose weight once and for all.

Want to Maintain Your Weight? Get Moving

I've always loved to be active. As a kid, I enjoyed ice skating, tennis, and any recreational sport offered at school or camp. I was never a great athlete, but my enthusiasm for participating in so many different activities certainly made up for what I lacked in skill.

Although I remained somewhat active as a teen, it wasn't until I was a young, overweight adult that I began to exercise regularly and consistently. The exercise, coupled with eating smaller food portions and making better food choices in general, helped me lose weight. I'm proud to say I've maintained my weight at about 30 pounds less than what I weighed at my highest weight in high school.

Much of the scientific literature, including a 2009 position paper by the American College of Sports Medicine, finds that exercise does little to induce weight loss. So I took to Twitter and Facebook to ask my followers and friends whether exercise had ever affected their body weight. Although two people said that exercise had helped them lose weight, and one said exercise tended to make her gain weight, most said it helped them maintain weight. (One woman said it even gave her one less hour to eat, which was a good thing!) To my delight, many who responded shared the benefits they derived from exercise. Even if it didn't help them lose weight, exercise increased their energy, lifted their mood, and helped them feel more fit. I couldn't agree with them more!

No matter how exercise affects body weight, one thing is certain: not enough of us are doing it on a regular basis.

A 2011 survey by the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index found that half of Americans said they exercised for at least 30 minutes on three or more of the last seven days. However, nearly three in 10 Americans said they did not exercise at all during that time frame.

Why the excuses? Perhaps some--especially those who have some weight to lose--feel like they have no time for exercise, or that it's just too hard, and they won't enjoy it. But a new study published in the American Journal of Physiology suggests that you need not subject yourself to too much sweat--or even tears!--to lose a little weight and gain the many benefits of exercise.

Researchers from the University of Copenhagen Department of Biomedical Sciences randomly assigned 53 overweight men between the ages of 20 to 40 into one of three groups: a sedentary control group, a moderate-exercise group (in which they completed about 30 minutes of aerobic exercise), and a high-exercise group (in which they completed about 60 minutes of aerobic exercise). Each of the exercise subjects performed activities such as running or biking; on three of the days, they exercised at a higher intensity, and on other days, chose their own intensity. Subjects in all three test groups were asked to consume their usual diet and record their daily intake.

After 13 weeks, the control group experienced no weight changes. But the researchers were surprised when the moderate exercisers lost more weight (about seven pounds) than the intense exercisers, who lost about five pounds. The researchers found that when the high-exercise group wasn't exercising, they moved less than the moderate exercisers, who seemed invigorated by the shorter duration of exercise. Researchers also speculated that the intense exercisers likely increased their caloric intake (and even more than they recorded) to at least partially compensate for longer exercise sessions.

"While it's true that eating less can cause more rapid weight loss, that approach seldom works for long, and weight tends to be regained," says lead researcher Mads Rosenkilde, who notes that the study was relatively short and results cannot be generalized. "It's far easier to stick with 30 minutes a day of exercise than with restricting calorie intake," he adds. Furthermore, emerging research highlighted in a recent article in the Journal of Obesity suggests that physical activity plays a key role in regulating body weight.

So if you're trying to lose weight, consuming a nutritious diet with a few less calories can help, of course. But whether you do that or not, it's wise to heed the advice of James O. Hill, executive director of the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center at the University of Colorado. Get your exercise, Hill says, especially because of its evident role in long-term, weight-loss maintenance. As he tells his patients, "Unless you are prepared to make permanent and substantial increases in physical activity" as part of any overall weight-loss strategy, "you are wasting your time with weight loss." And who has time for that?

Joining slimming group 'best way to lose weight'

London, Oct 10 (ANI): Joining a slimming group could be more effective in shedding the extra pounds, according to psychologists.

Researchers found that the support received at such groups led to dieters losing three times as much as those attending groups supervised by medical professionals, the Daily Mail reported.

The study, funded by the US National Institutes of Health, also found that those attending slimming classes, such as Weight Watchers, lose double the amount of weight than those who followed a strict weight-loss programme set up by a doctor.

The findings suggest that inspiration from someone who has personally had weight-loss success is often more successful than medical programmes set up by GPs.

Group classes which encourage members to share experiences and reach a "goal weight" proved particularly successful, it was said.

In the trial, run by City University of New York, 141 overweight and obese men and women were randomly assigned to 48 weeks of weight loss treatment by a health professional, or 48 weeks of Weight Watchers, or a combined treatment consisting of 12 weeks of the former then 36 weeks of the latter.

The investigators assumed that the combined treatment would produce better weight losses than Weight Watchers alone, but contrary to expectations, Weight Watchers participants had lost more weight at the end of treatment.

In fact, more than one third of the Weight Watchers participants lost 10 percent or more of their starting weight, compared to 15 percent of those in the combined group and 11 percent in the professionally-led group.

The study is published in the journal Obesity. (ANI)

Diet Doc Announces a 23-Day Weight Loss Program that Helps Dieters Lose Weight Fast with Modified hCG Diet Plan

Sioux Falls, SD (PRWEB) October 09, 2012

Diet Doc announces a 23-Day weight loss program that helps dieters lose weight fast with a modified hCG diet plan.

Diet Doc's modified hCG diet weight loss plan works to burn unwanted fat and has dieters losing up to 15 pounds in less than one month.

Diet Doc has created a weight loss plan that has dieters dropping unwanted pounds in less than one month with a modified version of the time-tested hCG diet. Originally created in the 1950s, the diet has proven throughout the years to be effective in fast weight loss. However, since the diet has been in the spotlight in recent years, it has been slammed by critics as having a dangerously low caloric intake. Diet Doc has modified the original version of the hCG diet plan to allow more calories as well as include essential vitamins and supplements. Founder and CEO of Diet Doc Julie Wright says weve taken the healthy advantages of the original hCG protocol and made it easier by using a personalized ketogenic diet plan that allows for a healthy amount of calories a day. All dieters on our program are also monitored throughout the program to ensure its effectiveness as well as safety.

Diet Docs 23-day hCG weight loss plan offers a customized diet plan complete with medical hCG treatments. The hCG comes in three forms: injections, drops or pills, all of which are pharmaceutical-grade and require a prescription from their on-site physician. The hCG injections are found to be most popular because they produce the fastest weight loss results. Other dieters prefer the hCG drops or pills which also come in a high dose but arent as easily absorbed into the body as injections, which go directly into the bloodstream. Whatever method any Diet Doc hCG dieter takes, these treatments will play a vital role in the weight loss program because they help mobilize stored fats that are then used for energy, creating fast weight loss results. Dieters also claim that the treatments suppress the appetite even enhance their mood according to Wright.

Diet Doc uses a ketogenic diet plan with the hCG weight loss program that consists of a healthy balance of lean proteins, health fats, green leafy vegetables, fibrous fruits as well as essential vitamins and supplements. The 23-day weight loss program aims to transform not only the the body but also eating habits in a short amount of time. Dieters report seeing dramatic weight loss in the first week of the diet which can also be party attributed to the restriction of starchy simple carbohydrates found in pastas and breads. Wright says our dieters make life-long dietary changes after we require them to cut out these unnecessary food groups and replace them with the essential ones. They really see a big difference in how they look and feel and dont want to go back to their old eating habits.

Diet Doc has recently started offering the hCG weight loss program as a telehealth weight loss program, making it available to anyone across the country via the internet or over the phone. In person consultations are no longer required and are even found to save most people time and money. Diet Docs Medical Director Dr. Rao says since weve started doing consultations over the phone or Skype, our dieters seem to be more inclined to stick to the diet plan because they hold more accountability than if they were to come into the clinic weekly. The telehealth program has the same format as the clinic program with weekly progress follow-up calls as well as full access to the Diet Doc medical staff.

Dr. Jacqueline Gerhart: Consistency is key in trying to lose weight

Dear Dr. Gerhart: I just got into exercising (walking) and lowering the salt in my diet. I haven't lost any weight. How else can I track my progress?

Dear Reader: Congrats! I can tell you right now that any improvement you make in your diet and exercise will help you mentally and physically. But consistency is key.

Everyone always says, "It's not a diet, it's a lifestyle." However, many of us get discouraged when we don't see results on the scale. So you need a way to track your progress.

If you aren't seeing results on the scale, then perhaps your goal should be a certain number of steps taken each day or a certain number of calories eaten. Once you pick a goal (which your physician can help with), then you have to figure out the best way to stay on track.

There are three main suggestions I tell patients:

1. Join a group, such as a fitness or weight management group, and let them do the tracking.

2. Find a fun way to track it on your own with technology devices or phone applications.

3. Keep it simple. Choose one: pedometer or pencil and paper.

First, the groups. You have likely heard of Weight Watchers and Curves. Most gyms also have groups for goals such as strength, flexibility and nutrition. But if you aren't interested in shelling out money, consider joining a group of friends or co-workers for accountability.

For example, there may be a group challenge at your work, such as a "Biggest Losers" competition. Or try joining a class. Your insurance company may help pay for "wellness" classes or activities at local clinics or hospitals.

Kids' weight loss program being introduced in La

NEW ORLEANS (AP) UnitedHealth Group Inc. and the Louisiana Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs are bringing a 12-month program to help obese and overweight children lose weight. The classes are only for families on the company's Medicaid plan in the New Orleans area.

The company's UnitedHealthcare unit says the program, called Join for Me, gets families involved in lifestyle and behavior changes to help children lose weight.

"Children who are overweight and obese often want to lose weight, but can't figure out how to do it," said Dr. Ann K. Logarbo, chief medical officer for UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Louisiana.

For obese and overweight children, losing weight can reduce the risk of physical and emotional health problems. Obese children are more likely to have high blood pressure, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes, all of which are risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

In the program, an otherwise healthy child and a parent attend 16 weekly group sessions to learn how to eat better and get more active. At each group session, they get worksheets with topics and goals for a session at home. Those are followed by monthly maintenance sessions for up to eight months more.

Children are taught how to keep tabs on what they do, eat and weigh, and to limit screen time to two hours a day five days a week.

They're also taught a "Yes! and less" system to help their daily calorie count. Fruits, vegetables, lean meats and high-fiber foods are "Yes!" foods that they should concentrate on while limiting high-calorie, low-nutrition foods such as sweets, pizza, fried foods and sugary drinks to two servings a day.

A pilot program in Rhode Island was run through the YMCA. A report on that program, published in the journal Pediatrics, said it can be run by people who don't have experience in treating pediatric obesity, making widespread use possible.

The insurance company and alliance were holding a community forum on childhood obesity Tuesday morning at the New Orleans bionnovation Center.

Classes will be held at some Boys & Girls Clubs for families enrolled in a UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Louisiana Medicaid health plan. The company says it plans to use the program in some areas as part of preventive care for families who have its employer-provided health insurance or government-sponsored Medicaid managed care plans.

Jennifer Lawrence hates Hollywood weight pressure

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence won't lose weight for her career.

The 'Hunger Games' actress hates the pressure in Hollywood for female stars to conform to an ideal of beauty and be a certain size and she refuses to be made to feel overweight for eating normally.

Jennifer ranted: 'Oh god, yes, I'm so tied of the lollipops. I mean, if I looked like that I wouldn't be tired of it, obviously, but it's hilarious, the way I'm supposedly the overweight one.

'Like, they (the paparazzi) got me at the movies yesterday and the caption read something like, 'Curvy star cannot wait to dig into a tub of popcorn'. I mean come on! I'm just a normal girl who likes to eat! At least they got me using me hands.'

The 22-year-old blonde beauty takes the responsibility of playing teen idol Katniss Everdeen in 'The Hunger Games' very seriously and wants to be a good role model to her fans, but admitted she has little in common with her tough on-screen alter-ego and is far from a natural leader in real life.

Jennifer told the UK edition of VOGUE magazine: 'I guess people expect that of me, and if I had to kill something for survival, maybe I would and yeah, maybe I was a tomboy when I was growing up. But I'm definitely a girl now ... Of course, there's a responsibility I'm aware of. In one sense, luckily, it comes naturally because I can't stay out beyond midnight. I don't really have an exciting life.

'But if you mean, am I natural leader? No. I just appear that way.'

Raspberry Ketone: Get a Free Bottle of Raspberry Ketones & Lose Weight Fast

Raspberry ketone diet free bottle giveaway campaign is live now at http://raspberryketonespecial.com along with a free report which explains why raspberry ketones is a better choice than the HCG diet or green coffee bean extract.

(PRWEB) October 07, 2012

Susan Squires from Florida says: I saw a positive plug of this product on the Dr. Oz show so I figured I would give it a try. It did as expected. When I take the capsules my stomach does get a full feeling where I don't have the urges to eat. As an end result I am eating less each day and noticed that I have been gradually losing weight. I would recommend this product to others who want to lose weight and cut down on their daily calorie intake.

Click Here To Get A Free Bottle Of Raspberry Ketone Susan Used To Lose Weight

Raspberry ketone is a natural phenolic compound that is the primary aroma compound of red raspberries. It is used in perfumery, in cosmetics, and as a food additive to impart a fruity odor. This compound regulates adiponectin, a protein used by the body to regulate metabolism.

In studies on rats, raspberry ketones helped prevent the onset of obesity in mice that were on a high fat diet. They also prevented an increase in blood triglyceride following high fat meals. That translates into raspberry ketones not only helping prevent the onset of obesity, but also preventing fat storage as well.

Research and raspberry ketone reviews have shown that raspberry ketone can help people too in their weight-loss efforts, especially when paired with regular exercise and a well-balanced diet of healthy and whole foods.

Raspberry ketone causes the fat within human cells to get broken up more effectively, helping the body burn fat faster. The recommended dose is at least 100mg per day. To get the same benefit from the whole fruit, one would have to consume 90 pounds of raspberries.

People from all over the world have started to report back raspberry ketones benefits.

Frank E. Wellman from Charlottesville, VA says: I tried this product on the recommendation of Dr. OZ and was not disappointed in the results. I upped my intake to 2 caps a day taken in the morning and that seemed to hit the sweet spot. I have lost about 2 lbs. a week and will soon be within the weight range suggested. Give it a try.
