Chief Dietician, Ms. Pavithra N Raj explains, "Milk diet involves just drinking skimmed milk for a month (up to 2 litres per day). Studies say excessive calcium consumption leads to weight loss, as it helps the body get rid of fat in particular, abdominal fat. If a person is on a milk diet the person will get only calcium and milk protein. The body will be lacking in essential nutrients such as magnesium, iron, niacin, folate and vitamins C and D, as well as completely lacking in fibre."

DEAR HARRIETTE: In recent years, I have gone up a size almost every year. Its awful. I have been working like crazy at an office job that doesnt allow me to work out much. But this is not good. I know its not healthy for me to have put on so much weight.

I recently started buying stretchy clothes so that I wouldnt have to keep upgrading my wardrobe, but I know thats not a real solution. What do you recommend to help keep off the pounds when Im too busy to get in the squats?

Need to Lose Weight

DEAR NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT: It is time to evaluate your priorities. Yes, a time-consuming job is understandable, but if you dont have your health, your fancy job wont matter at all. You should make time to exercise at least three times a week.Do your best to carve out time for this.

To lose weight, though, the biggest culprit that health educators point to is what you put between your lips what you eat or drink. The number of calories that you ingest daily has a direct effect on how much weight you gain, maintain or lose. What you can do right now is to change your eating habits. Cut down on carbs. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Drink water. Dont eat late at night. If you follow these simple rules, you can start to shed pounds. Good luck!

DEAR HARRIETTE: A new restaurant just opened up in my neighborhood, right next door to a restaurant that has been dying on the vine for years. I am friendly with the owner of the old spot, and I feel kind of bad going to the new place, but I want to check it out. It is drawing crowds of new customers, and, as they say, theres a lot of heat around it.

But its sad and awkward to see the old restaurant sitting there empty. I feel bad when they see me go over to the new place. I have stopped going to their place because Im not sure what to say. What should I do?

Split Loyalty

DEAR SPLIT LOYALTY: If you still like the old place, dont give it up entirely just because a new one has joined the block. Be brave and go to both. When you visit at your friends place, do not feel that you have to give a report about the new place. Instead, just be present and with them during your time together.

If they ask you questions about the new establishment, tell the truth. Be careful not to bad-mouth the other place because you are with your friend. Be neutral and honest. If you notice things they can do that may enhance their own experience, you can share, but be careful. You do not want to be in the position of savior. Stay in the role of friend.

You can tell your friend that you will always appreciate them and be a customer, but you do intend to visit the other restaurant from time to time.

Astronauts Enjoy Space Veggies and Look to the Future of Cosmic Salads – Space.com

As astronauts harvest and munch on mizuna, or Japanese mustard greens, aboard the International Space Station, the future of humans growing their own food in space grows brighter.

In 2015, astronauts aboard the space station grew a crop of red lettuce the first food grown in space. But "space food" and the prospect of growing viable crops and plants in space has been in development for some time.

"For many years," NASA plant physiologist Ray Wheeler told Space.com, NASA has "been interested in growing plants as a bioregenerative approach for life support, and the plants would provide food and oxygen and could remove carbon dioxide."

Now, with the new experiment Veg-04B with the Vegetable Production System (Veggie), a plant growth unit on the space station, this capability has taken another big step forward. The experiment is testing how the quality of light and fertilizer affects the microbial safety, nutritional value and taste of a mizuna crop. And this past week (on Nov. 13), astronauts Jessica Meir and Christina Koch completed the second of three harvests of this mildly tangy, leafy vegetable.

As the space station's Twitter account shared on Nov. 18, "A portion of the leaves were consumed by the crew while the rest were stowed in a freezer for later analysis on Earth."

Ultimately, the goal of experiments like Veg-04B is to create reliable and sustainable food production in space. Theoretically, future human settlers on Mars and the moon could grow at least a portion of their diet themselves. This would provide fresh, crunchy produce with optimal nutritional value for astronauts and make it so that they wouldn't have to rely entirely on supply missions from Earth.

"Over time, that packaged diet it loses quality and it loses nutrition. Some of the vitamins will degrade," Gioia Massa, principal investigator for Veggie, told Space.com. Additionally, while astronauts on the space station have access to food regularly sent via cargo missions, "astronauts tend to lose weight," Massa added. "We think that this weight loss is due to menu fatigue, and so we postulate that adding fresh produce to the diet could help with that."

By continuing to experiment with new crops in the microgravity environment on the space station, researchers can see how, like with the mizuna, plants retain their nutritional value and taste, and also how they grow. With controlled experiments on Earth, scientists can get a good sense of how new types of plants might grow in space, but they can't know for sure how they will develop over time until they are up on the station.

Now, while mizuna is a leafy green like the red lettuce first grown in space, Massa explained that they have big plans for upcoming space crops. She said that, while they started with leafy greens, they plan to move on to tomatoes, peppers, nutrient-packed microgreens and more. Wheeler added that eventually they might even grow small fruits like strawberries with dwarf fruit trees.

Massa said that they do consult the astronauts about what crops they would like to grow. And, surprisingly, while many have suggested foods like corn, she said, others have suggested flowers. For now, while they develop experiments with new crops, Massa said that they are considering, in the future, sending up a variety of seeds that could be in stock and available to the crew, so that they could select what they want to grow on orbit.

‘Today with Hoda and Jenna:’ The Co-Hosts Weigh Themselves on Live TV Before Giving Intermittent Fasting a Try – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Hoda Kotband Jenna Bush Hager ofToday with Hoda and Jennaare known for their transparency. Whether its about parenting, relationships, or daily scheduling, the co-hosts are very open when it comes to their personal lives.

So it was probably not a huge surprise to viewers when the two decided to take a brave step on the scales during their live morning news broadcast earlier this week and reveal their weight tally. This action was sort of a kickoff to the pair embarking on intermittent fasting, the latest popular diet trend touted by a host of celebs.

Both co-hosts are busy moms. Kotb has two young daughters at home whom she recently adopted Haley Joy in February 2017, and Hope Catherine in 2019 and Hager just had her third child, Henry Hal, in August. The two have been contemplating the practice of intermittent fasting more as a way to stay healthy rather than lose weight.

The pair approached the scale with trepidation, though Hager remained positive. Okay, I havent done this in a long time, Hager said according to People, as crunch time approached. Itll be fine.

Edging over the the scales, the women held hands as they came to the moment of truth. Telling each other not to look down, Hager joked, Its like jumping off a cliff.

After taking the leap, Kotb and Hager were a bit stunned at the results, even switching scales to confirm the outcome. Kotbs scaleread 158 pounds, and Hagers total was 171 pounds.

This is why I dont really weigh myself, Hager said, Yall know what is plugged into my Fitbit for real? 130 pounds. I weigh 40 more pounds than I tell everybody I do! I think I weigh twice as much as my sister. Like, two Barbaras could fit in me.

Kotb reminded her co-host of the possible reason for the change. You just had a baby, she told Hager.

The NBC anchors had a reason for their big reveal. Kotb and Hager decided to experiment with intermittent fasting, which is going without food or extremely restricting calories for a period of time. The practice has recently been embraced by several top celebrities including Jennifer Aniston, Chris Pratt, Halle Berry, and Greys Anatomy alum Kate Walsh.

I saw results and I really felt like it was great.Walsh told Us Weeklylast year. I was doing one day a week of fasting, from 6 p.m. to 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. to 7 p.m. I did find that you definitely lose a lot of water weight.

After the weigh-in, Kotb and Hager spoke with Dr. Natalie Azar on the proper way to fast, where the physician described the many health benefits of the practice. I think more in its infancy is the stuff about longevity and Alzheimers, and, you know, maybe it has a role in treating or managing chronic disease and cancer, Azar explained, according to Today.com. Theres no large trials of any of those things, but mechanistically its a very interesting, hot topic right now.

Azar reminded the co-hosts that the purpose of intermittent fasting was an approach to eating that focused on timing. There is no rule because there are so many different ways to approach this, Azar said. Conceptually, its not a diet. Its a way of eating. Itswhenyoure eating as opposed towhatyoure eating.

The physician suggested thinking of the plan as having 12 hours in which you can eat and 12 hours of fasting, which can equal 12 hours of storing food and 12 hours of burning calories. For those who want to try the practice specifically for weight loss, Azar recommended going 16 hours between eating and fasting.

Weight loss: How long does it take to get out of shape? – Times of India

Exactly how much you will lose depends on the length of your break and your fitness level. If you are consistent and exercise for 5 or 6 days a week then it takes more time to get out of shape. Even after taking a break for a week, you will manage to easily bounce back. This is because by working out consistently strengthens your muscle memory and even if you miss out your workout, your skeletal muscles may stick around for a long time even when other muscles shrink.

If you take a break because you are sick then you will start losing your strength within two or three weeks as illness will make you weak. However, if you are not sick then you will start losing your strength after four or five weeks. As per a 2000 study, young people lose 8 percent of their strength after 31 weeks of inactivity, while older people lose 14 percent of their strength during the same time.

Sadly, cardo loss is even quicker as compared to strength loss. As per a study conducted in 1984, 21 days of inactivity decreases the VO2 max by 7 percent and the endurance reduces by 50 percent. Cardio fitness might be the first to go, but it takes less time to regain it.

Pensioner sheds nearly 12st and ‘cures’ himself of diabetes in the process – Wales Online

A pensioner has been "cured" of type 2 diabetes after losing almost 12 stone in weight.

Jim Lindley, 76, from Bridgend , started his weight loss journey six years ago after tipping the scales at a colossal 28st.

But he has since been told by a diabetes nurse that he is no longer showing any signs of the condition after shedding 11st 10lb.

"I don't take any medication for diabetes anymore. I truthfully believe that if I hadn't lost this weight, I wouldn't be here," he said.

Jim was chatting to a friend about needing to lose weight when he was approached by a stranger who said: "Church Hall, Tuesday, 7.30pm, and bring money."

He decided to go along and see what she was talking about and ended up joining Slimming World.

"I remember saying to the consultant that I would not eat that much food in a day, but she said you must remember that you should never be hungry," said Jim.

"In the first week of following the plan I lost 9lb. The most I have lost in one week is 10lb - I couldn't quite believe it, he added.

Throughout his amazing weight loss journey, which started in 2013, Jim said he was repeatedly buying new clothes and having to give them away as he was losing so much weight.

"I have even gone down two shoe sizes. I said in class every part of my body has reduced in dimension, apart from my hat size, Jim joked.

Jim, who now weighs 16st 4lb, said he has always been a big man. Growing up in a Yorkshire mining community, he said he would eat whatever his dad ate when he came home from the pit.

Before he started his diet, his usual breakfast would consist of something quick and fast like a couple of bacon sandwiches or a fry up, which would include full fat sausages, bacon, mushrooms and onions fried in oil with bread slathered in butter.

Having cut out cakes when he found out he was diabetic, he didn't eat a lot of sweet treats but admitted he still liked to snack on biscuits.

He would often skip lunch but would make up for the lost calories with a full cooked dinner, consisting of vegetables roasted in fat, fatty onion gravy and a big Yorkshire pudding.

Now, Jim explained what he eats hasn't changed that much but the way it is cooked has, which makes all the difference.

"I still have a cooked breakfast but without the fat on the bacon and everything is cooked in a low-calorie cooking spray with low-fat sausages," said Jim.

He also continues to enjoy a cooked dinner, but once again he has swapped the fat for healthier options. But the pensioner admits that one of his favourite new meals is a curry.

"My daughter who lives with me does most of the cooking and she makes beautiful curries.

"There is not much difference but there is a lot more veg."

Jim said his success mostly came from being a "stubborn sod", admitting that even if he wasn't losing any weight one week, he would stick at it.

He added: "I would say the biggest thing that helped was giving up the drink.

"I will only have one or two beers on the rare occasion now, whereas before I would drink a lot."

Changing his diet has meant Jim is able to be a lot more active, and he now walks miles around Porthcawl most mornings.

"I do sincerely believe that if I had not gotten that weight off, I would not be here now."

Jim retired years ago to care for his wife, Mary Lindley, who had cancer.

She sadly died just a few months before they reached their 50th wedding anniversary.

"If she was alive and I had done this diet, I know there would be occasions where she would say 'go on, have this big sandwich, it won't hurt'," he laughed.

Slimming World is more than just a diet for Jim, who has become an important member of his group by helping to set up the class each week.

"Everybody is so encouraging, we are all in the same boat."

Jim attends the Westward Slimming World Group, on Llangewydd Road, Cefn Glas in Bridgend. The group runs each Wednesday at 7.30pm.

CARBS are often billed as the enemy when it comes to losing weight.

In particular, many believe that munching on pasta, potatoes, rice and even cereal can ruin an otherwise good diet.

However, top dietitian Helen Bond has finally debunked this myth - and claimed that eating carbsmay actually help speed up the weight loss process.

The registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the British Dietetic Association told The Sun carbs contain fibre - which is key in keeping our digestive system healthy and reducing bloating.

Despite this, she says there are other things we need to focus on when it comes to shedding those pesky pounds including not having too many fatty toppings and getting active.

Here, she takes us through her top tips on the best ways to blast belly fat fast without giving up carbs...

Helen shut down the long-held belief that cutting carbs is the key to fighting the flab.

She says: "Many of us think carbs should be off limits if were trying to lose weight.

"But the latest scientific evidence confirms foods rich in starchy carbohydrates like potatoes, bread, rice, pasta, noodles, oats, breakfast cereals, quinoa, barley, couscous, bulgar wheat, millet, spelt, freekah, teff, sorghum, amaranth and buckwheat are an essential part of a healthy, balanced diet.

"These foods provide us with energy and ideally, we should enjoy them at each meal after all, they are all plant foods!

"But its important to choose the right types.

She recommends sticking to certain serving sizes, such as a "tennis ball sized" portion of pasta.

She says:"Part of the reason carbs get such a bad press is because many of us eat them in huge amounts!

"Stick to the following serving sizes: a tennis ball sized serving (around 150g) of cooked pasta, rice, noodles, couscous or other grains; one handful or five level tablespoons (30g) of wholegrain breakfast cereal; one potato the size of a computer mouse (180g); and one to two slices of wholegrain bread."

We're all guilty of coating our pasta in parmesan cheese or spreading heaps of butter over our toast.

However, Helen says we cancounteract the weight loss process by doing this.

She says: "Watch what you eat starchy carbs with, serving them with butter, cream, fatty meat and cheese wont help you shape up."

Six ways carbs help you LOSE weight

1. Carbs fill you up

These foods are bulky and provide fibre which makes them filling and satisfying, especially when eaten with foods containing protein.

2. They're full of nutrients

Starchy carbohydrates provide essential vitamins and minerals, especially the B vitamins which are essential to the functioning of the nervous system and support healthy skin.

3. They're a workout fuel

Carbohydrates are stored in your muscles as a substance called glycogen which the body calls on for energy to power your workout.

4. They're good for your brain

Carbohydrates encourage the release of serotonin, the brains feel good neurotransmitter as well as endorphins that have a similar function.

5. They're quite low in calories

Imagine a portion of cooked pasta 200 grams worth. It only contains 260 calories while still being filling and containing zero fat.

6. They keep you regular

Starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta and root vegetables contain fibre, which helps prevent constipation.

Instead, Helen says if you want to feel fuller and make your meal more interesting, add a hearty portion of veg on the side.

She adds: "If you want to lose weight, make portions a little smaller still and make up the space on your plate with extra veg."

As well as focusing on a balanced diet and eating the right carbs, exercising is key in blitzing body fat.

Helen says: "A calorie controlled diet, keeping in mind the proportions of the Government's Eatwell guide, and exercise in tandem is the best way to reduce body fat.

"And for the ultimate fat-burning boost, a combo of aerobic and strengthening exercises is far more effective.

"Aerobic activities such as running, cycling, swimming and aerobic classes increase the calories we burn both during and after exercising, while strength training such as lifting weights or using our own body weight helps to build muscle and the more muscle we have, the faster our metabolism is, so that we burn more calories, even at rest.

"Each week aim for at least 150 minutes of moderately intense aerobic exercise and do strength training at least twice."

While many dieters try to avoid snacking, Helen says it can be key in getting more nutrients into our diet.

Helen says: "Snacking can be part of a balanced diet, and can be a great opportunity to sneak some extra nutrients into our diet.

"But its important to choose our snack food wisely - even healthy looking snacks, like reduced fat biscuits, cereal bars, yogurt, cereals etc. might seem like virtuous choices, but not all are created equally some are high in cholesterol-raising saturated fat and added or free sugars - the type that we should be cutting down on for the sake of our teeth and waistlines.

Helen adds: "Its best to avoid snack foods that are highly processed or refined.

"As well as being high in saturated fat, sugar and/or salt, theyre often low in nutrients and loaded with calories, and very moorish which makes it harder for us to control our weight.

"Examples of foods we should limit include takeaways, crisps, savoury snacks, sugary and chocolate confectionery, cakes, biscuits, pastries, ice cream, and sugary soft drinks."

‘I Tried The Keto Diet And Lost 75 Pounds In Less Than A Year’ – Women’s Health

I'm Kaitlyn Aprile (@kaiitgoesketo), from Long Island, New York. After being told by doctors that I was at risk for diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure, I decided enough was enough and started the keto diet. I lost 75 pounds in the process.

When I was only 18 years old, it felt like my body was already giving up on me. My doctor had just given me a reality check, and things didn't look good. She informed me of how much weight I'd gained since I last saw her and said I was at high risk for diabetes. I was already dealing with hypothyroidism, so the thought of adding another health condition to my plate was not ideal.

The doctor went on to discuss my blood work. She showed me how off my levels were, how much my weight was affecting my body and ran down the list of things I was currently at risk of, including heart disease and high blood pressure.

A couple of Mondays later, something in me changed. I woke up and I just felt...different. I felt this sensation that I wanted to be better. I decided I'd lose 60 pounds and I was going to do everything possible to achieve this.

I went downstairs and threw away everything in my kitchenfrom the Oreos to the Pure Leaf Lemon Iced Tea to all the other snacks I was binge eating and had hidden from my family. I found the only pair of yoga pants that fit me at the time with my usual oversized 3XL sweatshirt and I went for a walk.

In that very moment, I changed my life forever, without even knowing it yet.

The hardest thing I had to learn was proper nutrition. Before my weight-loss journey, I lived to eat. I let my binge eating take over practically my whole life. I constantly worried about my next meal and let it control how I felt and how I treated others. But not anymore. Now I eat to liveand that started with my decision to try the keto diet.

I'd always heard about keto but was intimidated by it and didn't know where to start. After doing *tons* of research, I finally decided to give it a try. My first week on keto, I made my Instagram page and started following dozens of keto pages for recipes and tips.

As I got more comfortable, I started experimenting with different foods you can eat on keto. Between Instagram and Pinterest, I had plenty of meal inspiration and recipe ideas. That's one thing I'd recommend to others who want to try keto: Make it fun for yourself and look for recipes that not only meet the keto rules but that also sound tasty to you.

There are endless recipe options online and great keto guides and web sources for inspiration. And if meal prepping for your diet is stressing you out, you're on the wrong diet.

In the beginning of my journey, I was horrified by the gym. Walking into any facility made me super self-conscious and feel like all eyes were on me (even though no one was actually looking). So I started walking at night and anytime I had free timebefore work, after work, during breaks, anytime I could get up and move.

Fast forward a month into my journey when I decided to finally give in and join a gym. I started going at least four to five times per week, focusing strictly on cardio. I would run as much as I could and walk on an incline with my asthma inhaler right by my side (just in case!).

To my surprise, I fell in love with the gym. I was in control of my body for the first time in my life. And I started going to the gym every day, sometimes even twice a day depending on my schedule. It's been seven months since I started my weight loss journey and I've already lost 75 pounds. Now I'm incorporating weight lifting into my workout routines, since I'm focusing on toning and gaining muscle (yay!).

When I first started my weight loss journey, whenever I went to the gym or had any time to myself, I took pictures of everything. From mirror pics, selfies, and even making my boyfriend take progress photos of me in a sports bra and underwear.

I wanted to be able to look back at these photos in a few months and feel good about myself. And I can honestly say that I do. When I look at old pictures and videos of my body, I'm reminded of my progress. It really keeps me motivated.

Everyone has their own way of losing weight. Whether you're on keto, Weight Watchers, Atkins, you calorie count, or you just stay mindful of what you're eating, give your body time to do its thing. And don't get bogged down by the fast #transformations you see on Instagram and social media. Take your time and do the best you can.
