Tara Welling Shares Her Experiences Regarding Weight as a Member of the Nike Oregon Project – LetsRun.com

At the time I felt that Alberto had my best interests as an athlete in mind and I had no reason not to trust him. My perspective changed after leaving the Oregon Project.

Two weeks ago, high performance coach/elite meet director Jonathan Marcus reached out to LetsRun.com to share his experiences with Alberto Salazar and the Nike Oregon Project. During the process of fact-checking that story, we contacted Tara Welling, who ran for the Oregon Project from 2012-14 (and later Marcus), who said she preferred to tell her story in her own words.

Throughout college, I dealt with an eating disorder, but it never spiraled out of control until the summer/fall of 2012, my first year with the Oregon Project. I was 23 years old and going through a tough personal time with my mom being diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time. She lived alone and I felt a sense of guilt that I should not be leaving the country to follow my running dreams with the Oregon Project. I joined the group in Europe as they prepared for the Olympic Games. I was the only female and didnt feel like I had anyone I could really open up with and talk to.

Tension was high and I wanted to be a great runner, but also wanted to be home with my family during this difficult time. When I joined the Oregon Project, I was 5-foot-4 and weighed around 100 lbs. During our time in Font Romeu and London, I dropped to around 88 lbs, stemming from my levels of stress and depression.

Alberto never weighed me during this time, but my weight loss was very apparent. I later learned that a teammate brought it up to Alberto during our time in Font Romeu. It wasnt until after the Olympics that Alberto first talked to me about it. He said that he would get me all the help I needed.

Alberto set weight goals for me: first 95 lbs, then 98 lbs, and I would be allowed to race the USATF 5k and 10k road champs that fall if I hit those numbers. Alberto was very concerned about my weight and took me to the store to get high-calorie, nutrient-dense foods that would fuel me for my runs and help me gain healthy weight. I was told that when we got back to the States, he would help me get connected with a nutritionist, therapist, and doctors to keep me on track and help me get healthy, and I did eventually meet with a nutritionist and a therapist.

What hasnt been made public yet is that my visit to Dr. [Jeffrey] Brown, in September 2012, was related to this process of helping me get healthy, including numerous tests that were done. Initially, this was something very difficult for me to share with USADA [during their investigation of Salazar and Dr. Brown] as it required reopening wounds which are still challenging for me to talk about. Until the USADA investigation, these details are something I hadnt talked to anyone else about, outside of my parents and Alberto.

I ended up racing the 5k & 10k champs that fall and eventually found a steady weight. A little while later I was up to ~105 lbs and had been following my lifting program per our strength coach Dave McHenry and Alberto. I was then told my arms were getting too muscular and I needed to lose a few pounds. I stopped lifting heavier weights on my upper body and was limited to only bodyweight exercises so I didnt have to carry extra weight.

Alberto constantly said I should look like Kara Goucher and Genzebe Dibaba. He also said I should be 100 lbs with a low body fat percentage, but muscular. It was confusing and I found it mentally difficult when I had to lose weight and look like other runners when I was not them. It was a constant comparison battle. I was often weighed with the underwater scale and had body measurements done via skinfold measurement. I was never weighed publicly or in front of teammates, but Alberto was always present.

In summary, I felt like weight was certainly a focus and embedded into the training process. I did witness Alberto weighing other athletes and criticizing their weight (both men and women). For me, it wasnt always less is better in terms of weight. I had a target weight that Alberto felt was healthy but also ideal for performance and he wanted to do everything to help ensure I was at that (which was 100 pounds in his mind).

I do wish things would have been different. I wish I sought more advice apart from the doctors and therapists that Alberto had available. At the time, I felt like I didnt have a choice and I had to prove to him that I was getting healthy and gaining weight. I didnt feel like I had much of a say and it was a do-as-youre-told type of culture. But at the time, I felt that Alberto had my best interests as an athlete in mind, and I had no reason not to trust him.

I left the Oregon Project in the winter of 2014. By that point, I was solely working with [NOP assistant]Pete Julian as I felt he better understood how I responded to training. I was told that if I wanted to remain with the Oregon Project, I had to win the USATF Club Cross Country Championships in December 2014 and prove that I could compete at a high level. I placed second that year in Bethlehem, Pa., and I was not re-signed.

After leaving the Oregon Project, I later found the fun in training again and somewhat let go of an ideal race weight. I lowered my PRs in the 1500, 3k, 5k, 10k, andwon two national road titles (15k and half marathon) before competing at the Olympic Trials in the 5k and 10k in 2016. Id be lying if I said I was 100% recovered from my eating disorder and tendencies, but Ive found ways to manage it much better.

My contract with Skechers Performance expired at the beginning of this year, and they chose not to renew it. I gave birth in January to our baby girl and since enjoyed being a new mom as I slowly get back into running, but not necessarily back to a professional/elite level yet.

As I have stated in my prior statements, any discussion of weight that I had with my athletes was in the context of my attempting, as their endurance coach, to help the teams runners, both women and men, understand the impact runner weight has on performance of elite runners. At no time did I encourage athletes to maintain an unhealthy weight. I take very seriously that athletic performance and good health and well-being go hand-in-hand. It thus was my foremost goal as a coach to promote athletic performance in a manner that supported the good health and well-being of all my athletes.

For this reason, throughout my career as a coach, I routinely referred athletes to medical doctors who could provide advice on a wide range of medical issues, including their general health. Further, I have always ensured that my athletes, both women and men, have available to them resources, such as dietitians, nutritionists and others, to help them achieve or maintain any target training weight or performance weight in a healthy and appropriate manner. Eating More Gluten is Linked to a Child’s Risk of Celiac Disease – Science Times

A study that was published in the journalJAMA, suggests that children who eat a lot of gluten-heavy foods could develop intolerance to gluten. This is crucial during the five years of their life as it can increase their likelihood of having celiac disease, which is a digestive disorder that damages the small intestine.

Experts say that higher gluten intake is associated with a 6.1% increased risk of celiac disease autoimmunity, a 7.2% increased risk of the celiac disease per each additional gram of gluten per day, and immunological response to gluten, according to study.

The researcher of this study evaluated more than 6,600 newborns in the United States, Germany, Finland, and Sweden. These babies were born between 2004 to 2010. All of the children carried a genotype linked with Type 1 diabetes and celiac disease. The authors of the study recorded the gluten intake of the kids every few months until they reached the age of 5, and they compared the levels to reference amounts of gluten intake in children with noType 1 diabetesand celiac disease.

According to the author of the study, Carin Andren Aronsson, a study manager at the Unit for Diabetes and Celiac Disease at Lund University in Sweden, that over the time that they did their study, 1,216 of the children, or nearly 20% of them, had developed celiac disease autoimmunity, the first sign of the body's negative response to protein. Another 450 participants were diagnosed with celiac disease, about 7% of the participants. Most of the diagnoses occurred between the ages of two and three, according to research.

Celiac disease affects millions of people all over the world

Those who are diagnosed with celiac disease, eating gluten can damage the lining of the small intestine, and it can prevent nutrient absorption. It is estimated to affect 1 in 100 people all over the world, and more than 2 million people might not even know that they have the disease, according to theCeliac Disease Foundation.

Gluten intake is considered as one of the factors in developing celiac disease. However, according to the study that as published in JAMA, the quantity of gluten intake plays a major role as well.

Impact of gluten-free foods for health

Nowadays, gluten-free foods are becoming popular, even for those without a gluten intolerance. Since the 1940s, the diet has been made as a way to reduce bloating and lose weight, though nutritionists today do not necessarily support those claims. When dieters ask their patients to cut out gluten, they sometimes risk nutritional problems. The gluten-free product replaces glutenous ingredients with things like white rice flour and tapioca, which often contain higher amounts of sugar, calories, and fat than gluten, according to dietitian Julie Stefanski.

Gluten products can also be fortified with vitamins and iron, and they can be high in fiber, so eliminating the source of those nutrients could cause digestive problems for those without celiac disease. Removing gluten from your diet is the only way to manage celiac disease, according to theUniversity of Chicago's Celiac Disease Center.

They recommend that parents of young children with the gene reduce their level of gluten intake to prevent the onset of the disease. They also reminded the public that there is no known safe limit for gluten for children who carry the genotype for celiac disease.

From Kombucha To Yogurt: Fermented Foods Could Be Harmful To Your Health – 10 daily

Fermented foods have become very popular, thanks to claims about their nutritional properties and reported health benefits, such as improving digestion, boosting immunity and even helping people lose weight. Manal Mohammed, University of Westminster

Some of the most popular fermented foods include kefir, kombucha, sauerkraut, tempeh, natto, miso, kimchi and sourdough bread.

But though these fermented foods might offer us many health perks, most people arent aware that they might not work for everyone. For some people, fermented foods might cause serious health issues.

Fermented foods are loaded with microorganisms, such as live bacteria and yeast (known as probiotics). However, not all microorganisms are bad. Many, like probiotics, are harmless and are even beneficial to us.

During the process of fermentation, probiotics convert carbohydrates (starch and sugar) into alcohol and/or acids. These act as a natural preservative and give fermented foods their distinctive zest and flavour.

Many factors affect fermentation, including the type of probiotic, the primary metabolites these microbes produce (such as lactic acid, or certain amino acids), and the food undergoing fermentation.

For example, probiotic yogurt is produced by fermenting milk, most commonly with lactic acid bacteria that produce lactic acid.

Fermented foods contain high amounts of probiotics, which are generally considered safe for the majority of people. In fact, theyve been shown to have anti-oxidant, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic and anti-atherosclerotic activity.

However, some people might experience severe side effects after consuming fermented foods, such as:

The most common reaction to fermented foods is a temporary increase in gas and bloating. This is the result of excess gas being produced after probiotics kill harmful gut bacteria and fungi. Probiotics secrete antimicrobial peptides that kill harmful pathogenic organisms like Salmonella and E. Coli.

A recent study showed this antimicrobial effect of probiotic Lactobacilli strains found in commercial yogurt. Although bloating after eating probiotics seems to be a good sign that the harmful bacteria are being removed from the gut, some people might experience severe bloating, which can be very painful.

Drinking too much kombucha can also lead to excess sugar and calorie intake, which may also lead to bloating and gas.

Fermented foods rich in probiotics including yogurt, sauerkraut and kimchi naturally contain biogenic amines produced [during fermentation]. Amines are created by certain bacteria to break down the amino acids in fermented foods. The most common ones found in probiotic-rich foods include histamine and tyramine.

Some people are sensitive to histamine and other amines, and may experience headaches after eating fermented foods. Because amines stimulate the central nervous system, they can increase or decrease blood flow, which can trigger headaches and migraines.

One study found that low-histamine diets reduced headaches in 75 per cent of participants. Taking a probiotic supplement might be therefore preferred.

Histamine is plentiful in fermented foods. For most, our bodys specific enzymes will naturally digest them. However, some people dont produce enough of these enzymes. This means histamine wont be digested and will instead be absorbed into the bloodstream.

This can cause a range of histamine intolerance symptoms. The most common are itching, headaches or migraines, runny nose (rhinitis), eye redness, fatigue, hives and digestive symptoms include diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting.

However, histamine intolerance can also cause more severe symptoms, including asthma, low blood pressure, irregular heart rate, circulatory collapse, sudden psychological changes (such as anxiety, aggressiveness, dizziness and lack of concentration) and sleep disorders.

While most fermented foods are safe, its still possible for them to get contaminated with bacteria that can cause illness. In 2012, there was an outbreak of 89 cases of Salmonella in the US because of unpasteurised tempeh.

Two large outbreaks of Escherichia coli, were reported in South Korean schools in 2013 and 2014. They were associated with eating contaminated fermented vegetable kimchi.

In most cases, probiotics found in fermented milk products such as cheese, yogurt and buttermilk can effectively prevent the growth of certain bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcal enterotoxins which can cause food poisoning. But in some cases probiotics fail and bacteria can actually secrete toxins, so the product may be hazardous.

Despite being marketed as a health drink, some kombucha brands can have half as much as alcohol as a beer, prompting calls for changes to labelling and safety information.

Probiotics are generally safe for the vast majority of people. However, in rare cases, they can cause infection especially in people who have a compromised immune system.

A London study reported the first case of a 65-year-old diabetic patient whose liver abscess had been caused by probiotic consumption. Susceptible patients, such as those with compromised immunity, should be advised against consuming too many probiotics.

Treatment with probiotics can cause serious infections, such as pneumonia in vulnerable people and systemic infections, including sepsis and endocarditis.

Probiotic bacteria can carry genes that confer resistance to antibiotics. These antibiotic resistance genes may pass to other bacteria found in the food chain and gastrointestinal tract via horizontal gene transfer.

The most common antibiotic resistance genes carried by fermented foods are against erythromycin and tetracycline, which are used to treat respiratory infections and some sexually transmitted diseases.

Researchers found resistant probiotic strains in commercially available dietary supplements, which could mean resistance to several common types of antibiotics used to treat serious bacterial infections.

Research has also found six probiotic Bacillus strains found in food products (including kimchi, yogurt and olives) are also resistant to several antibiotics.

And, a recent Malaysian study showed probiotic Lactobacilli bacteria in kefir carry resistance to numerous antibiotics, including ampicillin, penicillin and tetracycline. These are used to treat serious human diseases including bladder infections, pneumonia, gonorrhoea, and meningitis.

Another study also showed lactic acid bacteria found in Turkish dairy products were resistant mainly to vancomycin antibiotic, which is the drug of choice for treatment of MRSA infection.

While there are a wide variety of health benefits that can happen from consuming fermented foods, these may not work for everyone. While most people will be fine eating fermented foods, for some they could cause serious health problems.

Instead of using thick, sweet sauces such as ketchup or brown sauce, dieters should use herbs and spices to add flavour and interest to meals.

At breakfast this could include chives, cinnamon, or chilli flakes depending on the dish.
