Jessica Simpson recalls taking diet pills to lose weight at the direction of a music exec: ‘I was down to 103 pounds’ – Yahoo Celebrity

Jessica Simpsons weight struggles have been well-documented, but for the first time shes admitting that she relied on diet pills to stay trim and started taking them when after a music executive told her she was overweight.

In yet another excerpt from her upcoming memoir, Open Book, Simpson recounts meeting then-Sony Music Entertainment honcho Tommy Mottola when she was a 17-year-old aspiring singer. She said he wanted to sign me, which she was over the moon about. "And then he said, 'You gotta lose 15 pounds.'"

Simpson, who hadnt yet graduated high school, recalled thinking, "What? I was five-foot-three and weighed 118." She said star maker Mottola told her, "That's what it will take to be Jessica Simpson."

Hoping he would help her the way he did superstars Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Jennifer Lopez, Simpson said she "immediately went on a strict diet, and started taking diet pills, which I would do for the next 20 years, meaning she finally stopped taking them some time after going into recovery for alcohol and pill addiction in November 2017.

While Simpson did drop the weight she was asked to shed, she was starving. It also was harmful to her self-image, resulting in her calling herself horrible names.

"I started to hear voices when I was alone at night, waiting for the sleeping pill to kick in: 'Do more sit-ups, fat ass, she remembered thinking. "By the time we got to the release of my second album's first single, 'Irresistible,' I was down to 103 pounds. Everyone went on about how great I looked, but I couldn't enjoy it because I was so freaking hungry."

Simpson said another directive of the label was to "show more skin."

Yahoos attempts to reach Mottola, who now heads Mottola Media Group, were not immediately successful.

In a 2009 Vanity Fair story about Simpson, both Mottola and Simpson spoke about their initial meeting. It took place in July 1997 and Simpson said she was excited not just to potentially ink her first major record deal but because Mottola was married to Carey, who was one of her favorite artists. (Mottola and Carey had a bitter split the next year. In his 2013 memoir, he apologized to Carey for being controlling and obsessive toward her but said, it was part of the reason for her success.) The music exec didnt hide that Simpsons looks played a part in signing her to Sonys Columbia division.

She had a great little look and a great attitude, a fresh new face, and something a bit different than Britney [Spears] and all of them, he told the magazine. She could actually sing.

The VF article also makes it clear why Simpson kept secretly popping diet pills for two decades. The article was all about whether she could reinvent herself after two boxoffice flops, an unpopular country music album and especially after being photographed looking fat in mom jeans. The writer talked about it being a danger sign that pictures turned up in the tabloids that showed the starlet, onstage, looking less than slender, holding the microphone like a turkey leg, and wearing the jeans she was mercilessly ridiculed for. (Fun fact: The jeans were a size 4.)

The interviewer went on to describe Simpson who details in her memoir how she became addicted to alcohol by using it to mask her anxiety as nervous saying her hands trembled and detailed how she ordered a glass of Pinot Grigio. It seemed to calm her. She didnt want to talk about her weight, so, of course, thats all I could think of it gilded each question in my mind: What are you working on now [that youre fat]? Do you see yourself as part of a class, with Christina and Britney [or are you too fat]?

The interviewer also noted Simpsons extra pounds had gone back to wherever they came from, existing only in a few dated pictures on the Internet. Jessica was skinny again.

Simpsons weight struggles have been a narrative throughout her career. Her body was celebrated when she rocked those Daisy Dukes in the 2005 film The Dukes of Hazzard, but she was mercilessly ridiculed as well. Now a fashion mogul, Simpson always credited diet and exercise, with her long-time trainer Harley Pasternak, never revealing that she used diet pills as a crutch all that time.

Simpson also served as a Weight Watchers spokeswoman, using the program after having her first two children in 2012 and 2013. After the birth of daughter Birdie in 2019, Simpson lost an amazing 100 pounds in six months working out with Pasternak, going from 240 pounds to 140.

Open Book will be out on Feb. 4 and its already clear that its filled with some truth bombs. Simpson also recorded the audiobook as well as new music that is inspired by her memoir.

What is brown fat and can it help you lose weight? – Firstpost

Fat could mean two things - dietary fat or body fat. By now we knew that there are different types of dietary fats - some good and some bad. But heres something that might be new - there are also different types of fat cells in the body - white, brown and beige. Brown fat has enjoyed attention in the fitness world ever since a series of studies published in 2009 discussed its energy and fat burning capabilities when the body is exposed to cold temperatures.

Representational image. Image by TeroVesalainen from Pixabay

Also called brown adipose tissue, it is found deep in the torso and neck area and is activated in cold conditions. Once activated, it burns ordinary white fat and glucose to warm up the body.

Studies in mice have shown that brown fats energy-burning capabilities are high considering it is present in small quantities in the body. Current research is focussed on whether these fat-burning capabilities can be harnessed and assist in weight loss programs. So it appears that the enthusiasm surrounding brown fat is a bit premature.

For starters, brown fat has extremely low energy expenditure unless it is stimulated (meaning when its not terribly cold) and human brown fat has lower energy-burning capabilities when compared to a mouses brown adipose tissue. While the body can be trained to produce more brown fat by being exposed to cold temperatures for several hours a day, no study states that this could lead to weight loss. Further, exercising in the cold does not seem to enhance weight-loss programs.

It has been suggested that exercise increases the activity of brown fat but the evidence of this is unclear. Research claims that exercise causes other fat to act more brown-like, which means that it burns energy to increase metabolism when exposed to the cold. Also, paradoxically, exercise studies have shown that the fat-burning capabilities of brown adipose tissue are actually reduced on exercising. This might be because its primary purpose is to keep us warm and healthy, and not to make us lose excess weight.

While all this information might seem confusing at this point, its a part of the process of reaching a conclusive finding. All this suggests is that further research needs to be done on brown fat to make sense of the contradictions.

A study published inNaturein August 2019 shed light on how brown fat helped with metabolism. The men in the study who naturally had higher levels of brown fat activity had reduced levels of BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids) in their blood. While BCAAs carry out vital functions in the body, higher amounts have been linked with obesity and diabetes. Further investigations in mice showed that higher levels of BCAAs did, in fact, progress to obesity and signs of diabetes.

Further, an NIH (National Institutes of Health) study published earlier this week showed that a drug that stimulated brown fat activity had favourable metabolic effects in healthy women. The participants were on the drug for four weeks which doubled the amount of brown fat while their body mass remained the same. They were found to have increased resting energy expenditure, higher levels of bile acid which digests fat, higher levels of HDL (which is known as good cholesterol) and better regulation of blood glucose.

This study only consisted of 14 participants. While there may have been favourable metabolic changes, the participants also experienced increased heart rates and blood pressure which normalized after the drug was stopped. Further, higher doses of the drug (called mirabegron and otherwise used for bladder issues) have been linked with cardiovascular disease.

More research needs to be done on how and if brown fat needs to be harnessed. Until then, the usual adages apply: exercise regularly and follow a healthy diet.

Weve talked previously aboutLove and Hip Hop Atlantastar Tokyo Vanitys attempts to lose weight on the show, and her co-stars well-meaning but misguided attempts to motivate her to take the process seriously. Being somewhat shamed by a friend to get moving more in the gym and to eat clean obviously didnt help, but it seems that the 23-year-old has found a regimen and eating plan that works for her. She recently showed off her weight loss to fans on Instagram after starting the year off with healthy habits:

The beauty has actually been sharing videos of herself getting moving in the gym lately. Shes been doing two-a-day workouts here and there, choosing healthier foods (like grapefruits as a snack) and already lost more than 30 pounds.

Yall said yall was gonna meet me at the gym today why yall keep lying !!!! she captioned a recent video. @bodybyted I gotta life 30 more pounds b4 my trip at the end of February.

Her trainer, @bodybyted, who is presently working with hairstylist andLHHATL star Shekinah Jo too, publicly lauded Tokyo on his own Instagram page for her discipline and dedication to her goals.

Me and shawty @tokyoxvanity came in 2020 playing no games, he shared as the caption to a photo of Tokyos results. Dropping 16-25 pounds per month is the goal for the next 6 months.

While Tokyo hasnt shared her actual goals in terms of how many pounds she wants to drop, she has jokingly, in her straightforward way, inspired her more than two million followers to get active with her. Diet Demand Finds Flaws in the Military Diet Says There Are ‘Much Better Options’ for Weight Loss – Benzinga

Greenwood, MS, Jan. 23, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The popular Military Diet has been around for a few years now and doesn't appear to have any chances of slowing down despite having no connection to the actual military. The high protein, low-calorie diet is used to help people lose weight within a few weeks under a restricted meal plan three days per week. Dieters will eat three low-calorie meals per day to ramp up metabolism,' while the other four days are free to consume a little bit more. Meals include hard boiled eggs, toast, some fruit, crackers, coffee or tea, and yes ice cream. Despite its claims of 10 lbs. per week of weight loss, there have been very few studies conducted on the military diet to show its efficacy. Dr. Tom Burns of the nationally recognized Diet Demand says that "This style of dieting never gets past the glycogen use phase and into the extended fast loss phase. Meaning, people may see a drop in weight on the scale, but fat loss will most likely be minimal and unsustainable." This is due to the use of glycogen stores which will shed more water than fat. People might enjoy the benefits initially, butwater weight regain is likely as soon as they start eating normally again.Given the calories in vs calories out model, cutting calories three times a week can potentially generate some weight loss, but again the diet itself simply is not sustainable in for any long-term period.

Furthermore, the Military Diet does not emphasize healthy whole foods that support long-term weight loss and maintenance. Instead, Diet Demand recommends a well-balanced diet of vegetables, proteins and healthy fats for both initial and long-term fat loss. For anyone looking for quick and encouraging weight loss results that are sustainable and also encourage improved health markers, Dr. Burns recommends a much better option' Diet Demand's Jumpstart Diet. Wait, Whats the Connection Between Birth Control and Weight Gain? – Yahoo Lifestyle

Your friend from work swears that she figured out why she suddenly packed on four extra pounds last month: She started a new type of birth control pill. This is a story youve heard beforewe know, we have toobut lets put it to rest once and for all. Its a myth.

How do we know? We asked a doctor. Theres a very minimal to no chance of weight gain for all methods of birth control, saysOB-GYNAdeeti Gupta, M.D., founder and CEO of Walk In GYN Care in Queens, New York. Its a total myth that birth control causes real weight gain.

But your friend swears her pants feel tighter. What gives? We picked Dr. Guptas brain for some more insight.

Not exactly. While its true that no method of birth control will make you gain significant weight or put you at risk of continuously becoming heavier, you might notice a slight, three- to five-pound increase at the very beginning if you start an implant (like Nexplanon) or injectable (like Depo-Provera). But this weight is a hormonal reaction to the new drug in your system that will likely reverse itself after your system levels out, Dr. Gupta advises.

Weight gain is very uncommon, but if someone experiences it after starting one of these methods, she should know it will subside over time, she says. Being on birth control doesnt make it harder to lose weight either, even if the weight is a (rare) symptom of the drug itself.

Dr. Gupta tells us we dont need to stay away from any brands out there if were worried about gaining weight since its the composition of the contraceptive itself, not the drug, that mightwe stress this stronglylead to a few superficial pounds.

Theres no weight-gain risk with a copper IUD, Dr. Gupta says, referring to the intrauterine device (like Paragard) that is inserted into the uterus. Women who opt for a hormonal IUD instead (like Mirena) might see a slight gainthink one to two poundsbut this will come and go swiftly, if at all. Those who opt for the pill (like Loestrin), ring (like NuvaRing) or patch (like Ortho Evra) might notice a little bit of water retention in the first few months, Dr. Gupta says, but this isnt body weight or fat, so it will go away (promise!).

This is true, but these arent your mamas contraceptives. Todays methods of birth control contain a different formula than what was once the norm when the pill was invented in the 1950s. Back then, it contained a whopping 150 micrograms of estrogen, according to the National Institutes of Health, but todays pills and the like have between 20 and 50 microgramsin other words, not enough to make you gain weight.

This medical advancement is just one of the many reasons were lucky to be women in the 21st century instead of in the 50s, when the pill was just emerging (and frankly, not all that great). All the options currently available take into consideration the many different reasons a woman might need or want the prescriptionto treat acne, combat problematic ovarian cysts, prevent pregnancy or help treat PCOSwithout the risks and side effects our moms and aunts had to endure.

So nope, your birth control pill isnt to blame. Case closed.

Weight loss Story: This guy reduced 30 kilos in JUST 5 months by walking 20,000 steps a day! – Times of India

What is the worst possible thing that can happen to you when you overweight? In addition to unsolicited comments from strangers, it is being let down by people close to you. When 25-year-old software engineer Narashiman saw that his friend had a meme out of weight issues and posted it on a social media platform, he had enough. From walking 20, 000 steps every day without fail to changing his lifestyle completely, he left no stone unturned to shed all the extra kilos. His transformation is jaw-dropping!Name: NarashimanOccupation: Software EngineerAge: 25 yearsHeight: 5 feet 11 inches

City: ChennaiHighest weight recorded: 115 kgs

Weight lost: 30 kgs

Duration it took me to lose weight: 5 months

The turning point: When you are overweight, there are a lot of things which bother you. However, nothing hurts more than your friends making fun of you or not being able to fit on the seats of public transports with ease. There was no specific moment which nudged me to lose weight, rather a series of events which pushed me to get back in shape. My breakfast: 3 slices of wheat bread with a couple of boiled egg whites

My lunch: A small plate of rice with a lot of mixed vegetables

My dinner: Chapattis or oats

Pre-workout meal: Few walnuts with some almondsPost-workout meal: Drinking a cup of water that is soaked with chia seeds

I indulge in: I eat biryani once a month

My workout: I made it a point to hit the gym at 5 in the morning for 5 months straight. I used to do a lot of cardio (treadmill, cycling and elliptical) and also walked for at least 2 kilometres everyday post-dinner. I also used to walk at least 20,000 steps every day and kept a track of it with the help of my wrist band.Low-calorie recipes I swear by: A serving of fresh fruits and vegetables and a cup of green tea

Fitness secrets I unveiled: I recommend everyone to do basic research on the term metabolism because it plays a major role in the weight gain and weight loss in the human body. Calories deficit is another major aspect to be concentrated on during your weight loss journey.

It is important to understand that balancing your metabolism and calories you intake is the key to lose your weight. Hence, first, we need to identify our bodys metabolism and then start working out. Dont blindly rely on gymming alone to lose weight, rather try to change your lifestyle and use your body to get most of the work done.

How do I stay motivated? I keep myself motivated by simply looking at the other peoples fat to fit journey on Instagram. Id like to especially thank my friends and colleagues, who kept me motivated by their inspiring words.

How do you ensure you dont lose focus? In the beginning, it was very difficult and challenging to change my lifestyle completely. In fact, there were times when I almost gave up. However, I told myself that I need to go through this momentary pain if I wish to lose weight and get back in shape.

Whats the most difficult part of being overweight? I did not have a lot of options when it came to buying clothes owing to my weight. Moreover, finding a seat on the bus or a train was also really troublesome, both for me and other passengers.

What shape do you see yourself 10 years down the line? I would like to stay fit and healthy for all the years to come.

What are the lifestyle changes you made? I have made several lifestyle changes and follow them very strictly. Some of them are:1.I wake up early even on weekends

Tom Kerridge is on a mission to Lose Weight and Get Fit this January, and is back on the BBC to help us along with some tasty, yet healthy recipes.

Heres how to make his cottage pie and soda bread!

This luxurious dish does not scream diet to us, with creamy, cheesy mash and rich mince meat. But yet, it comes in at just 550 calories per portion!

Heres how to make it

You will 1kg of 5% beef mince for this recipe, to feed eight. Then, 3 celery stalks, 2 carrots, 2 large onions, 250g chestnut mushrooms, frozen peas and 3 cloves of garlic.

For flavour, youll need 250ml of red wine, Worcestershire sauce, a tin of tomatoes, bay leave, sprigs of thyme, and 1 tbsp of tomato puree. And, of course, salt and pepper to taste!

For the mash you will need 3 large white potatoes and 2 sweet potatoes. You will also need milk and 2 dessertspoonfuls of light vegetable spread.

Step 1: Roast your minced beef according to cooking instructions.

Step 2: While roasting, chop the onions, peeled carrots, celery and garlic into chunks and blitz into a fine mince in a food processor.

Step 3:Sweat the minced vegetables in oil on a medium heat use a big saucepan! When the onion has started to go translucent, add the tomato puree and cook for a further few minutes.

Step 4: To get all of that tasty flavour from the bottom of the pan, pour in the red wine and scrape the bottom of the pan, like your digging a trench as Tom says. Add a dash of Worcestershire sauce for flavour!

Step 5:When the mix is sizzling away again and the wine has cooked off, add the tin of tomatoes, two bay leaves and sprigs of thyme. Leave it to simmer.

Step 6:When the meat is cooked and crispy, add it to the tomatoey veg mix on the hob. Add roughly chopped mushrooms.

Step 8: Mash your boiled potatoes into a bowl, either with a masher or a potato ricer. Add the warmed milk mixture and flavour with a teaspoon of dijon mustard, a grating of nutmeg, and salt and pepper.

Step 9: Finally add peas to the mince mixture, and dont forget to remove the bay and thyme.

Step 10: Layer the mince and then the potatoes on top in a large, ovenproof dish. Sprinkle with grated cheddar and parmesan. Bake for 15 minutes at 200 degrees, or until golden brown and crispy!

Step 1: Add 350g of wholemeal flour, 350g of self-raising flour, a pinch of salt, soft-brown sugar and the all-important 2 teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda to a mixing bowl.

What I Gained When I Stopped Trying to Lose Weight – Greatist

Content Note: This article contains details of weight loss efforts.

What could you be doing instead of dieting, exercising, and thinking about food?

My dietitians question completely stumped me. I didnt spend that much time in the pursuit of a perfect body, did I?

Sure, Id been dieting for years. I had, at times, taken it too far in high school, when I would go days eating barely anything, but dieting was different. Nothing in my extensive dieting history really compared to what began in January of 2018, though.

Id just gotten back from a year abroad and started gaining weight. I was desperate to lose it all (and then some). I tried more diets than I want to admit, including keto, veganism, juice cleanses, and calorie counting, all while exercising four or five times a week.

Dieting all the time, I thought, was normal.

My dietitian knew all this. She knew that, before I started seeing her, I probably wouldve listed dieting as one of my hobbies.

And to clarify, my gynecologist tricked me (with good intentions) into seeing a dietitian who specializes in eating disorder recovery and Health at Every Size. After I brought up my diet and exercise regimen and hormone issues and mentioned that I was having trouble losing weight, she recommended this dietitian and, in desperation (to lose weight), I made an appointment.

I thought my dietitian was going to teach me the secret to thinness, but instead I learned the secret name for my chronic dieting: an other specified eating disorder. I thought what I was doing was normal, but I didnt realize (until very recently) how much of the richness of life I was missing.

I spent so much time obsessing over thinness. I weighed myself more than once a day. I kept food journals, logged meals in fitness apps, and scheduled four or five high intensity workouts a week. I created accountability group chats, hoping my friends would keep my calorie count in check.

What I didnt share was the shame I felt during late night binges or the hours I spent working off those calories.

Now that Ive given up intentional weight loss, I have all that time back.

Ive started writing, which means I might take a few nights off from working out to send pitches or research an article. Exercising my mind through writing has been a wonderful use of my time and a great creative outlet.

And instead of texting my friends to shame me out of eating, I Facetime them to plan trips together or complain about something other than my diet. I went to Greece with my best friend this spring, where we ate the most delicious foods and had the time of our lives.

The time I spent on fitness apps has been redirected to budgeting apps. This new obsession is more fun, more educational, and healthier especially for my wallet. Weird how health foods cost a lot of money.

After ditching an obsessive exercise routine, I had the freedom to go to happy hour with friends without trying to reschedule a workout. The flexibility to do what serves me and my happiness has been life-changing.

When I was in the worst place with my body, I saw movement only as a punishment for eating. I forced myself to do intense cardio every single day, believing it was the key to losing weight. I never tried weight training and did yoga only when it involved cardio portions in very hot rooms.

Since ditching weight loss, Ive been freer, able to try different types of exercise and to do them when my body is craving movement. Ive tried so many different types of yoga I didnt even know existed! A relaxing yin class on a Sunday evening is the perfect reset for both my body and my mind before a workweek, which is also when I do spin classes and some weight training.

All movement is good even if its only walking from my desk to the cafe down the road for a sweet treat.

This freedom has also allowed me to try things I was previously afraid of (like sweet treats). I threw out my scale and havent weighed myself since November 2018.

Ive posted photos of myself where you can see visible cellulite or fat rolls. I have the freedom to be who I am now instead of being trapped in a mental prison that I wouldnt free myself from until I lost weight.

I was lucky to be referred to a dietitian whose specialty was not intentional weight loss. Her practice was steeped in teaching clients to eat intuitively and enjoy health at whatever size they were. Working with her for just a few weeks revealed my body was in starvation mode.

It took a bit of time to teach my body how to eat normally again. I needed a vitamin regimen to get my physical energy back. Restriction had left me deficient in several key vitamins, like vitamin D and B-12 (both orally and subcutaneously), which are both linked to energy levels.

Once I started nourishing my body, I became more energized than I had been on any fad diet Id tried, including keto. But whats been even more transformative is the change in my emotional energy.

It takes so much out of you to hate your body and torture it daily. Feeding myself the narrative that I wasnt good enough took a toll. I didnt really know it yet, but I was tired of living like that.

I am still working on being OK with being in a larger body, but having the capacity to spend my emotional energy on bettering the world instead of bettering my body has been a positive change Im so thankful for.

Radical acceptance is a term my dietitian taught me. Every day, I challenge myself to acknowledge the way I feel about my body and just accept it. It helps me meet myself where I am rather than spend all my waking hours longing for an ideal Ill probably never reach.

I accept the fact that dieting never worked for me and never will. I accept my body the way it is right now, the way it was yesterday, and the way it will be tomorrow.

Sometimes the emotions associated with my body arent positive, but when I practice mindful acceptance of them, it makes processing the pain easier. By acknowledging my pain, I can focus on coping mechanisms rather than starve myself as a numbing technique.

This concept of radical acceptance has served me in other ways as well. It has been an incredible tool in my relationships and my career.

There are so many things we cannot and should not try to control. When I accept those things, I can put my energy into focusing on the things I can change, making my relationships healthier and my work more fulfilling.

I was spending all my time and energy on diet and exercise, but with her help, Im not doing that anymore. Going into my second year without resolving to lose weight is exciting, though I know it will be challenging.

On those challenging days when my eating disorder is trying to trick me back into my old habits, Ill remind myself of all Ive gained since I stopped pursuing weight loss.
