Is It Time to Take Profits on Weight Watchers? – The Motley Fool

Weight Watchers (NYSE:WTW) stock is up almost 70% over the last three months, but the company is facing a number of issues that may hold back its revenue growth. The first is increased competition from a growing number of wellness programs, diets, and coaches in the digital space. Social-distancing measures have also hurt WW's studio revenue, which may not return to pre-pandemic levels.

Weight Watchers announced that subscribers increased 7% as of June 6, 2020, as compared to June 8, 2019. The total 4.9 million current subscribers includes 3.8 million digital subscribers and 1.1 million studio + digital subscribers. Digital recruitment trends returned to growth in mid-April on a weekly basis versus a year ago.

While the weekly increases in digital customers have even accelerated since mid-April, WW is seeing significant declines in its studio + digital business. The drop in this more profitable segement is due to a suspension of in-person workshops since mid-March. This decrease in studio-related revenue has only been partially offset by the growth in digital revenue.

Currently, all WW workshops are virtual but still community-focused and coach-led. The company is reopening some studio locations with 400 projected by the end of June. Due to the closures, management sees studio revenue sharply decreasing year over year in the second quarter.

There has been huge growth in the number of wellness and weight loss apps available. Consumers can choose from Noom, MyFitnessPal, Lose It!, Fooducate, and countless others. Many of these health goal apps include extensive features like barcode scanners and support forums.

Noom, a popular mobile weight loss company, had over 50 million downloads as of Jan. 2020 and $237 million of revenue in 2019, up nearly 300% from the prior year. Some of Noom's popularity could be attributed to its use of psychology, cognitive behavioral therapy, and physiology to help members lose weight and achieve wellness goals. These are features that make it stand out from weight loss programs that are more numbers-based.

In all, there is a horde of health, wellness, and diet websites vying for WW's clients. Many of these digital wellness offerings also have community and coaching components -- two features that WW likes to tout -- and they're often more affordable as well.

WW's existing and new customers may not trade up for the more expensive studio option once they are accustomed to digital plans. Virtual workshop memberships can cost twice as much as digital memberships (or more), while coaching memberships cost closer to four times more than basic digital programs.

Given continued social distancing and concerns around COVID-19, many consumers are hesitant to return to their old lifestyle habits, and that will likely include in-person workshops too. They'll also be more price-conscious with their spending like wellness programs given the recession and high unemployment rates.

Overall, this consumer-discretionary company faces serious risks to its long-term revenue growth that should keep investors on the sidelines until membership trends turn more favorable.

More than a quarter eating less healthily during lockdown – Personnel Today

More than a quarter of people say they have been eating less healthily during the weeks of lockdown, with stress, tiredness and anxiety often acting as key triggers for reaching for snacks and less healthy foods, according to a new poll.

In a YouGov survey of more than 2,000 people, commissioned by the British Nutrition Foundation, 27% admitted they were eating less healthily than they had been before the pandemic, compared with 22% who felt their diet had actually become healthier.

Almost half (48%) of individuals did not feel motivated enough to eat well, something that was potentially putting their health at risk.

Boredom (63%) was the main reason why people were eating more unhealthy food, while 30% said not being able to go to the supermarket often had made it difficult for them to eat well.

Sara Stanner, science director at the BNF, said: While the coronavirus outbreak has brought the importance of health to the forefront, the measures weve had to take as a nation to control the spread of the virus have made it challenging for many of us to eat well and keep active.

One third (32%) of those polled said they were spending more time sitting down than before the lockdown, while 29% admitted to being less active than usual.

More positively, many were keen to reverse these habits as lockdown restrictions were eased with 47% saying they wanted to become more active and exercise more, 43% saying they wanted to lose weight and 29% planning to eat more healthily.

With lots of us still at home more than normal, its easy to spend a lot of time sitting and to feel less motivated to eat healthily, said Stanner.

Its encouraging that, despite this, many people are now going for regular walks to keep active, are taking time to plan what they eat, and are trying new recipes. People are also clearly looking to improve their health as the lockdown measures ease, with getting active, losing weight and eating healthily all cited as key priorities, she added.

Fasting doesn’t serve the purpose of weight loss Otabil tells congregants ahead of 40 Days of Power – Myjoyonline.com

The General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) has advised his congregants against having the mindset of using the 40 Days of Power as a means to lose weight.

Mensa Otabil in his sermon on Sunday indicated that the fasting period is a spiritual exercise and sacrifice unto God, thus, it is important for one who observes it, does it right.

I know there are people who fast because they want to lose weight and sometimes they say Well I am waiting for 40Days of Power to knock off some 10 pounds, 3 kg.

I appreciate your effort at weight loss but if you really want to lose weight, do it another time. Fasting does not serve the purpose of making you lose weight, he stressed.

Although the Head Pastor admitted people lose weight when they, he emphasised that should not be the main motive of congregants who will go through the spiritual exercise.

He added that, people with such mentality do not get the open reward from God as they should.

So I appreciate your desire to be healthy and I know you will be healthy because fasting by itself makes you healthy but that is not the reason we fast.

So dont go through the 40 Days of Power checking your weight every time, trying to see if you have lost weight, he admolished.

Quoting the scripture, he said, God who see in secret will reward you openly.

The 40 Days of Power is an annual season of fasting a prayers for congregants of the ICGC. For this years edition, it has been scheduled for Thursday, June 25 to Monday, August 3.

CAMPBELL, Ohio (WKBN) This weekend, two Campbell women returned home to teach workouts and fitness health. They say working out is good for the mind and the body.

Isabel Espada and Ariel Rivera are wellness coaches with Herbalife Nutrition.

Before, I was always scared to workout. I didnt like working out alone, so this weekend it was our goal to bring that to our hometown and bring people together who want to get fit or are already fit and want to get into it, Espada said.

This weekend, they returned to their home in Campbell to teach a three day camp at Roosevelt Park.

Coming home to make an impact is awesome. Its actually really gratifying helping people build confidence and bringing what people call a sunshine state of mind to this little hometown. Its a good feeling helping people reach their goals, said Ariel Rivera.

From walking up and down bleachers to doing the abs version of the Cha Cha Slide, people were pushed through these one-hour calisthenics workouts.

We do a lot of high intense interval training, so were burning fat and building muscle at the same time, Rivera said.

Were pushing people to their best ability. We want them to feel every bit of it, learn and push themselves because a lot of people said they workout every day, but Ive never sweated this much, Espada said.

Working out is not only good for physical change but also mental.

However, for many, its hard to take that step to workout.

So, Espada says it was discipline that helped her lose weight and that its important when starting something new.

I tell my clients consistency and discipline. You have to make that choice that will further you later. Sometimes you dont want to do it now, but you know its going to make you feel better ten days from now, she said.

The two coaches say being able to share the confidence theyve built within themselves with everyone this weekend was very inspiring, especially within their own community.

Who said weight loss diet can only be about boring and bland foods? If done in a proper way, weight loss can be both fun and result-yielding. It is said that while peanuts are high in calories, they are rich in protein and fibre, too, that can make you feel fuller for longer, and help with digestion and weight loss. But, remember the snacking has to be done in a moderate amount, because just like everything else, excess consumption of peanuts can be counter-productive, too.

Why are peanuts good for weight loss? According to a study published in The Journal of Nutrition, any food that is rich in protein, can burn away some calories. As mentioned earlier, peanuts have calories, too, but they can be chewed down and crushed, and it will be like you are only taking calories in a little amount. It should be noted that peanuts contain some healthy fats, too, which are good for the heart. These can reduce the risk of obesity, inflammation and some heart diseases.

Also, peanuts are known to be good for the bodys metabolism, because they are a great source of energy. As mentioned earlier, when you snack on them, you feel fuller, and your energy reserves get replenished, too. Adding peanuts to the diet

The easiest way to do it would to be to consume them raw. Experts say that you must soak them in water, and have some every morning on an empty stomach. But, you can also have them raw and roasted. Then, there are many other interesting options like peanut butter, peanut dip, peanut jelly, etc. Peanuts can be added to main foods, too. So go ahead and sprinkle them on your poha, or your salads.

Is intermittent fasting the best way to lose quarantine weight? – Patch.com

With stay-at-home orders being lifted and the beaches opening, the holidays over and bathing suit season right around the corner, many of us are thinking about those extra pounds we'd like to lose in time for summer. And, as always, there are a host of diet and weight loss options to choose from, including the latest new hot diet trend intermittent fasting.

If you haven't already heard about it, intermittent fasting means cycling between periods of fasting and eating. There are several options for intermittent fasting, including fasting for 16 hours each day; fasting two days per week; fasting every other day; or fasting during the day and eating a huge meal at night. Any and all of these are being touted by many in the media and diet industry as the latest and most effective way to lose weight.

But is intermittent fasting really a good option for weight loss? Not so, according to Steven Santangelo, D.O., a primary care doctor with Virtua Health System.

"As far as a diet that includes intermittent fasting, I generally don't recommend that for my patients for weight loss as this can actually slow down their metabolism and make it more difficult to lose weight," he said. "I emphasize a healthy diet that is well balanced and includes regular exercise."

Dr. Santangelo also advises his patients plan their weight loss with realistic goals over a long period of time, and he encourages them see a Virtua nutritionist or dietitian.

"Even if you have a healthy lifestyle, you will always learn something if you meet with one of our dietitians."

And when it comes to exercise, Dr. Santangelo suggests at least 150 minutes per week.

"You need to do more than just take the dog for a quick walk," he said. "Plan to get out 4-5 times a week and get your heart rate up for 30 minutes."

The bottom line? Intermittent fasting is not a magic bullet for sustained weight loss. A healthy diet and a consistent exercise routine are still the tried-and-true way to lose those extra pounds and keep them off for good.

Scientists explain the best time to eat dinner to lose weight – Mirror Online

Eating dinner late raises the risk of piling on the pounds, warns a new study.

Dining just before bedtime also fuels the danger of diabetes by increasing blood sugar levels, according to the findings.

Researchers compared the effects among the same group of people of eating dinner at 6pm and 10pm.

More than 2.1 billion adults worldwide are estimated to be overweight or obese which make potentially fatal health complications such as diabetes and high blood pressure more likely.

Some previous studies have suggested that consuming calories later in the day is associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome.

Corresponding author of the new study Doctor Jonathan Jun, of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the US, said: "This study sheds new light on how eating a late dinner worsens glucose tolerance and reduces the amount of fat burned.

"The effect of late eating varies greatly between people and depends on their usual bedtime.

"This shows that some people might be more vulnerable to late eating than others.

"If the metabolic effects we observed with a single meal keep occurring chronically, then late eating could lead to consequences such as diabetes or obesity."

The researchers studied 20 healthy volunteers - 10 men and 10 women - to see how they digested dinner eaten at 10pm compared to 6pm. The volunteers all went to bed at 11pm.

The researchers found that blood sugar levels were higher, and the amount of ingested fat burned was lower following the later dinner, even when the same meal was provided at the two different times.

Study first author Dr Chenjuan Gu, also of Johns Hopkins University, said: "On average, the peak glucose level after late dinner was about 18 per cent higher, and the amount of fat burned overnight decreased by about 10 per cent compared to eating an earlier dinner.

"The effects we have seen in healthy volunteers might be more pronounced in people with obesity or diabetes, who already have a compromised metabolism."

The study is not the first to show the effects of late eating, but the research team said it is one of the most detailed.

They said the volunteers wore activity trackers, had blood sampling every hour while staying in a lab, underwent sleep studies and body fat scans, and ate food that contained non-radioactive labels so that the rate of fat burning could be determined.

Dr Jun added: "We still need to do more experiments to see if these effects continue over time, and if they are caused more by behaviour - such as sleeping soon after a meal - or by the body's circadian rhythms."

The 55-year-old, who hit his goal weight in early April, took to Instagram to share two photos of his before and after transformation, captioning the snap: "4 stone later. I want to help people be fitter n happier."

Gregg is launching his fitness and diet website Gregg Show.Me.Fit on 25th June, which will offer subscribers exercise tips and healthy recipes for 7 a month.

It will feature his own personal trainer Danny Rai BSc, MSc who has put together a range of exercises that you can do at home to burn fat or to work on specific areas of your body.

The website also features wife Anna Wallace, who will be creating all the healthy home cooked recipes, all of take just 30 minutes to prepare and cook. Anna and Gregg met on Twitter in 2013 when she reached out to ask for advice on a rhubarb and duck recipe.

The TV personality overhauled his lifestyle back in 2017 and has gradually transformed his physical image ever since.

During lockdown, he revealed to his followers that he was now below his target of 12 stone and was looking and feeling better than ever.

Despite being in lockdown Gregg has been keeping up his regime and has kept his followers updated on what he's been doing to and the exercises that have been keeping him busy.

He said: There's no gyms, that doesn't matter, my PT Danny has sent me a five day programme.

Gregg, who was once 16 stone, previously discussed his decision to change his lifestyle, telling The Sun: "I made a conscious decision to cut down on fried and high sugar foods, as well as booze which helped me lose weight.

When I was at my biggest I was having a daily fry up, fish and chips once per week, takeaway a couple more times and drinking beer nearly every day. At first, I felt like I was missing out. But my body got used to what I was giving it and yours will too.

Gregg is currently holed up in the Kent countryside with his wife Anna and their son Sid, 11 months,

His in-laws Massimo and Rina are also in the house, as is his daughter Libby, 24, who he shares with ex wife Denise.

The turning point: I was always aware that I was overweight but I did not really do anything for the same. I should have paid attention to my diet atleast, but I kept struggling with my weight and did not bother to change my lifestyle even a bit. However, there came a time when I gradually realised that I needed to step out of my comfort zone and get back in shape. All my life people have been giving my unsoliticed pieces of advice on how to lose weight. I decided to prove them wrong and get back in shape!

My breakfast: Normally. I just have a cup of black coffee in the morning. However, on days when I feel really hungry, I have a bowl of oats and 4 egg whites(boiled)

Pre-workout meal: Bullet coffee

Post-workout meal: Homemade protein smoothie

I indulge in: I like to take weekly cheat meals as it is needed to boost your metabolism and ward off any feelings of deprivation. Taking a little break and indulging in what you like not only improves your ability to lose weight but also helps you stick to your diet plan.

My workout: There was no one to guide me except for a few friends of mine, so mostly I depended on online tutorials for exercising. My workout includes weight training, HIIT and my favourite, Crossfit.

Low-calorie recipes I swear by: Grilled chicken, oats and Greek yoghurt

Fitness secrets I unveiled: You cannot expect results overnight and it is a concept that many still struggle to understand. It takes hard work, consistent efforts, a balanced nutrition program, and most of all time. At the end of the day, results come from having a consistent and sustainable fitness routine.

How do I stay motivated? Most people fail at their fitness goals because they're waiting for something magical to happen during their quest to lose weight. Losing weight isn't always a spectacular process. In fact, it isn't even a linear process sometimes as you lose a little, gain a little and repeat the process again and again.

How do you ensure you dont lose focus? Whenever I feel like I am losing my grip, I take a look at how far I have come and how hard I have worked for my current physique. I realise that I don't want all of it to go to waste. This in itself is enough to keep me focused and motivated.

Whats the most difficult part of being overweight? It was definitely lowered self-esteem and anxiety issues.What shape do you see yourself 10 years down the line? I want to lead a healthy life and also wish to have a super fit physique.
