North Hampton Library offering virtual fitness classes for kids and teens – Seacoastonline.com

Portsmouth Herald

NORTH HAMPTON The library will host a Jumping into Fitness program for kids and teens via Zoom.

The 30-minute virtual workouts will be coached by athletic trainer and gym owner, Justin Mahan of the new North Hampton business, Seacoast Athletics. The classes will be offered Tuesdays at 3 p.m. and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. for youth 10 and older.

Justin Mahan says of his programming style, I believe that fitness should be fun and not be a competition. Every person is uniquely different and their daily fitness should mirror that. Exercise programs should reflect abilities, focus on individual goals, and take things like experience and health history into account.

The classes start Tuesday, January 19. The exercises will be movements that can all be done at home with no equipment necessary. All fitness levels and abilities are welcome.

Lauren Chartier, youth services librarian says of the event, What perfect timing! So many kids and teens have made New Years goals to exercise more or try their first hike. The workouts are also great for youth who are in-between sports or stuck inside for the winter. Ive worked out with Justin before and he is such a great coach! He is so knowledgeable about fitness and has this way of boosting your confidence.

Justin has over 15 years of experience in the fitness world as a coach for various gyms. His background includes completing Chris Hinshaws Aerobic Capacity course, becoming a Certified Level 3 Crossfit Trainer, and attending numerous weightlifting and gymnastics seminars. He has a bachelors in biology and a masters in education.

Justin opened his own gym, Seacoast Athletics, in North Hampton in December 2020. To learn more about Justin and Seacoast Athletics visitwww.seacoastathletics.info.

PET TALK: Exercise with your pet this new year – New Castle News

If your New Years resolution is to exercise more, then consider including your dog in your routine.

Just like humans, dogs need daily exercise to stay fit and healthy no matter their age or breed.

Dr. Stacy Eckman, clinical assistant professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, offered some insight on exercise programs for dogs.

Unless their health prohibits it, all dogs need some form of daily exercise, Eckman said. However, the amount of exercise depends on the dogs breed and age. For example, high-energy and working dogs require regular exercise to stimulate them mentally and keep them from getting bored.

Other breeds may only require exercise to maintain or achieve a healthy weight and lifestyle.

In other words, a puppy or younger dog will probably have more energy than an older dog, and a Chihuahua probably wont be able to walk the same distance as a Border Collie.

Before beginning any sort of exercise routine, Eckman recommends having your dogs veterinarian evaluate its health condition.

Work with your veterinarian to develop a diet and exercise program that is tailored for your pet, Eckman said.

Story continues below video

For example, if your pet currently is overweight or lives a sedentary lifestyle, you shouldnt take them on a five-mile run the first day. In this case, Eckman said to start slow and gradually work a few minutes of exercise into their routine each day.

This is where tailoring the exercise to the pet and their individual needs is best, Eckman said.

Exercising can also benefit dogs that are prone to arthritis, hip dysplasia, or other health conditions that can affect mobility. Although it may seem that rest is better for dogs that have joint stiffness or soreness, exercising can actually help relieve this discomfort.

To alleviate pain, regular exercise, weight management, and veterinarian-prescribed medications are key in these pets, Eckman said. You may also rethink your exercise routine for these dogs. Instead of running or walking, try activities such as swimming to reduce impact and help keep their joints moving.

Senior dogs love to exercise and play, too. In fact, Eckman said keeping senior pets active is a good way to prolong their overall health and wellness.

Sticking to a New Years resolution can be ruff, but finding time to exercise with your dog will promote a stronger bond and an overall healthier lifestyle. But before you begin an exercise routine for your dog, remember to have them evaluated by a veterinarian. Now get outside and get moving!

What’s Next for Senior Tech? 5 Insights from the Thrive Center – HealthTech Magazine

1. Smart Technologies for Seniors Support Independent Living

From appliances such as induction cooktops for those with vision issues to refrigerators that let users see inside without opening the door (and set digital alerts for food expiration dates and order groceries for delivery), smart home devices offer flexibility and freedom to older adults.

These types of technologies can help enable a person to live at home, Rose says.

On a simpler and more cost-effective level, voice assistants can offer a helping hand for a variety of tasks. A user might ask a smart speaker paired with other devices throughout the house to adjust the thermostat, telephone a family member or see whos outside via a front-door camera.

Other tools may use light detection and ranging (lidar) technology to recognize motion in the home via laser scanning if the resident doesnt have a wearable or doesnt want to wear one, which is common for those with dementia. Likewise, sensors that use artificial intelligence can monitor changes in a persons gait and stride; changes detected to movement patterns can alert caregivers about the likelihood of a fall.

Beyond the typical smartwatches and consumer wearables such as Apple Watch and Fitbit, among others, a growing number of personal medical devices help older adults collect vital signs, capture and transmit that data and analyze it via dashboards for clinical review.

These include Wi-Fi-enabled pulse oximeters and blood pressure monitors that provide medically accurate measurements and immediate feedback.

MORE FROM HEALTHTECH:How COVID-19 accelerated digital transformation in healthcare.

Some smart hearing aids now feature Bluetooth technology and offer remote hearing-test capabilities; complementary apps can provide sound therapy designed to maintain and strengthen a users hearing.

Wearables, Rose says, have gained prominence since the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services expanded reimbursement for remote patient monitoring in 2019.

As COVID-19 cases continue to rise, meanwhile, tools that help reduce readmissions hold even more value. Chronic heart failure and other comorbidities can be monitored remotely and help seniors avoid exposure to the virus, keeping them safe and healthy at home, Rose says.

Some tools can even detect if something is amiss.

Smart tablets designed for seniors have integrated data collected from wearables. While youre playing solitaire on your tablet, you get an alert that you need to take a walk or take your heart medication, Rose says, also noting that certain wearables use geofencing and GPS technologies with two-way communication to alert caregivers if a person with dementia wanders away.

Although telehealth is not a new technology, the pandemic has promoted rapid adoption of virtual visits and video consultations functions that are critical to older adults with limited mobility and who are at a higher risk of contracting COVID-19 in public healthcare settings.

With so many videoconferencing options out there, each with its own user interface, clinicians and providers must consider easy-to-use platforms that allow older adults to log in securely and without complications.

Improvements in tablet and camera capabilities have made virtual visits more meaningful, Rose says, thanks to resolution levels high enough that a dermatologist could accurately assess a wound, for example.

Simplicity and visual quality also further the notion that virtual care is as effective and realistic as an in-person visit, ensuring older adults will use it when needed.

Fitness Apps for Crushing New Years Resolutions at Home – The Wall Street Journal

In the Before Times, a postwork workout was a must. When the pandemic shut my gym and local yoga studio down, I turned to apps to get my routine back. So. Many. Apps.

There are three basic categories of digital workouts:

Freebies include free apps and YouTube workouts. These are great for getting your feet wetmaybe youre starting to work out again after a long time off. YouTube is where you can try virtually any kind of workout. The downside is that you have to spend time hunting for one, and even that little bit of friction might keep you from exercising if youre feeling sluggish.

Premium programs are like Netflixes for fitness. You pay between $5 and $25 a month, generally, to access a large library of on-demand workouts of various types. The fee is likely cheaper than your gym membership. These apps aim to be one-stop shops for exercise. Theres typically cardio, strength and yoga offered in the same app. Some include live-streamed classes.

Zoom studios are the virtual version of high-end bricks-and-mortar fitness offerings. Theyre pricey, but working out alongside others in real time and getting webcam-enabled personalized instruction can be worth it.

From Cellular Fitness To Self-Pleasure, 6 Wellness Trends That Will Be Big In 2021 – British Vogue

The rise of wellness is nothing new, but this year has really made us take the time to focus on our health. Instead of working out to the point of exhaustion, people have taken a more holistic approach to their overall wellbeing, factoring in what makes them feel happy and healthy, rather than simply the quickest way to achieve washboard abs.

Its an attitude worth taking into the new year. Because really, everything in wellness boils down to what makes you feel good. And as the millions of women swept up in the latest sexual revolution know, that could also mean skipping a spin class in favour of a different sort of endorphin-boost entirely

This year has been stressful, to say the least. Now, a new range of programmes measure the stress youre under, and build an exercise routine around it. The aim is to avoid placing the body under further unnecessary stress when youre close to burnout, but equally, to encourage you to push yourself when you can legitimately manage another rep. High intensity or too much exercise when your cellular stress scores are high may deplete your defences, causing wear and tear, and leading to chronic inflammation, weight gain and possible ill health, Gideon Remfry, wellness director at KX members club says.

KX offers a cellular stress test for clients that measures the level of a damaging by-product released when stress assaults cells. The gym is not alone in this a WHOOP strap, favoured by NBA players, also provides 24/7 personalised physiological insights, working to uncover how stressed or rested the body is, and letting the wearer know they can go for it on those days they have capacity to be pushed to the max.

In essence our approach means we can positively stimulate your cells to adapt and become more resilient, using the best exercise for you, Remfry adds. All of us suffer from stress at some stage in our lives and not all exercise programs are created equal the difference is you and how your body reacts. So, we have to adapt to that.

WFH should mean more time to plan and stick to a fixed fitness regime, but strangely, that hasnt been the case. Cue the rise of the 20-minute quickie. ClassPass found that 20 to 30 minute workouts were the most popular on the app, with HIIT workouts (such as Booty Blast by NRG Barrebody on classpass.com) in highest demand. Likewise FRAME, which introduced its online studio this year, says that its new function, which allows clients to search on-demand classes by duration, has been a big hit (moveyourframe.com).

You can still reap health benefits from a quick class. Shorter workouts give you a focused way to push and challenge your body, says James Radcliff, senior partnerships manager, EMEA at ClassPass. Mixing up short, high-intensity workouts and longer workouts will also allow you to work out different muscles and keep workouts feeling fresh and different, adding a bit of variety to your routine.

Being housebound doesnt have to mean missing out on the high-tech advantages of a luxe studio. Apple Fitness+, which launched this month, enables users tosee workout metrics on their iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV, using sleek, studio-style experiences and personalised recommendations to help you get fitter, quicker.

Other brands are getting techy too: earlier this year Lululemon paid $500m to the fitness tech brand, Mirror, to increase its own digital and interactive capabilities, while the AI-powered (and UK and female-owned) brand CAR.O.L. promises to work the body so hard in 40 seconds that three sessions per week are equivalent to a 45-minute run, according to a randomised independent trial run by the American Council on Exercise.

Could there be a more perfect socially-distanced activity than skyrunning? TheInternational Skyrunning Federation defines the whimsically named activity as running in the mountains above 2,000m altitude.

Its akin to taking yourself on an adventure, Claudi Schroegel, skyrunner and founder of the trail running club @wearedaybreak, explains. The simple act of putting one foot in front of the other even using your hands on an easy scramble keeps you in the moment, and is a welcome respite from a hectic city lifestyle. And you get pretty fit along the way whilst having fun, too.

Skyrunning is already huge in Europe before Covid there were 200 races worldwidewith around50,000 participantsfrom65countries, according to the ISF and there are lots of spots in the UK where you can do it, from the Lake District, Snowdonia and Scotland to spots closer to London, like Surrey, Sussex and Oxfordshire (visit maverick-race.com).

The days of the Rampant Rabbit are long gone next-gen vibrators are at the forefront of the new sexual wellness revolution, and an industry thats set to grow globally to reach $40.4 billion by 2025, according to MarketDataForecast. Most pleasingly, the revolution is being led by women.

Smile Makers, a female-founded vibrator company, wants to change attitudes to self-pleasure. Its survey found that 63 per cent of female vibrator users in the UK reported being satisfied with their sex lives, compared to 46 per cent for non-users, with vibrator users 2.5 times more likely to have been interested in experimenting sexually since the beginning of the pandemic. Representations of sex still need a huge shake up, even in 2021, Cecile Gasnault, marketing director at Smile Makers, and creator of Vulva Talks, says. Women orgasm 65 per cent of the timeversus 93 per cent for men. There is no anatomical reason for that (the clitoris is an amazing organ for pleasure), but the representations of sex remain very phallo-centric.

Its something they intend to change, along with others in the market, from the reams of audio apps (almost guided masturbation tracks) from the likes of Revel, Ferly, Quinn and Wisp; to Hanx, the female-founded condom brand, which has launched CBD lubes that aim to relax the body.

Understanding our biology and our bodies is an act of feminism, says Ara Katz, co-founder and co-CEO of Seed, the supplementcompany that prides itself on science and education. The more we understand, the more empowered our choices will be, plus we will be more attuned to marketing and misinformation and subsequently, well have much more agency over our own health. Seed wants people to know what theyre putting into their bodies when they takes its daily supplements hence it has its own onlineeducation platform on Instagram, @SeedUniversity, and you can currently get a free sweatshirt fromCome Back as a Flower (CBAAF) if you complete the six-day-course.

Similarly, Amy Thomson, founder of Moody, the monthly mood tracker and journalapp will release her debut book in March, Moody: A Woman's 21st-Century Hormone Guide, about the power of tracking and understanding your hormones. It is informative, powerful stuff.

NYE full body workout resolution: Try one of these at home fitness programs – Film Daily

One of the most common New Years resolutions is getting more exercise. Many people say theyre going to do a daily full body workout, jog every morning, or do yoga to unwind. However, a lot of New Years resolutions like that dont end up actually happening.

Many dont follow through with their fitness goals. But often its only because people dont have a plan. Here are a few workout subscriptions that can help keep your 2021 exercise goals on track.

Hyfit resistance bands can help you achieve an effective full-body workout. Resistance bands are also perfect for those who live in small spaces and dont have a lot of room for large equipment.

Hyfit teaches you how to use the bands properly and offers a variety of workouts, meaning they arent your standard resistance bands. Each workout offered also has smart tracking. There are a couple different subscriptions, but the Hyfit equipment itself costs $49.99 and theres a subscription for $15 a month.

If you love playing video games, theres a way to play while getting fit in the process. Nintendos Ring Fit Adventure for the Nintendo Switch will give you a challenging full body workout.

While you play, one of the game systems joysticks goes into a ring you hold while doing a variety of fun and healthy activities. The game costs $79.99 on Amazon.

The Apple Watch isnt just for text messages & setting alarms. The device can also be used for Apple Fitness+, a subscription service which recently launched. Having an exercise subscription right on your wrist makes it easy to do a full-body workout anywhere. Apple Fitness+ costs $9.99 a month and includes a large library of trainer-led workout videos.

The Mirror is the most expensive workout subscription on this list and possibly the creepiest, yet best. The Mirror equipment costs $1,495, and a monthly subscription to classes $39 a month. In a typical gym, there are mirrors so people can watch themselves while working out and make sure theyre doing poses correctly.

The Mirror brings the mirror to your home. It goes right on a wall, meaning it doesnt take up too much space. It comes with cameras that watch you and give you live feedback on your form. A full-body workout can be done while streaming instructor-led classes. When The Mirror isnt being used as a workout tool, it becomes a regular mirror.

CorePower Yoga allows subscribers a variety of classes that can be livestreamed or played on demand. There are classes available for people of any level and for a variety of different exercises.

The easier classes include yoga, but there are also cardio sessions and free-weight exercises for those who want to exert more muscle. This means whether youre casually getting fit or wanting a full-body workout, there are classes to suit your needs. A subscription to CorePower Yoga costs $19.99 a month.

The MYX isnt your typical full-body workout machine. It includes a video touchscreen that broadcasts instructor-led cycling sessions. Cycling is often a communal activity with an instructor who guides everyone else on their bikes.

Theres even a heart rate monitor and a way to personalize workouts to your needs. The machine itself costs $1,299, and a monthly subscription to the services $29 a month.

Get a full body workout using FightCamps kit, which allows you to punch and kick all your feelings out. For $1,219, you get a punching bag, gloves, and punch trackers for recording workout stats. For an additional $39 a month, you get access to their trainers.

Trends to watch in 2021 in entertainment, homelife, worklife and fitness – Minneapolis Star Tribune

In anticipation of the changes coming in the new year, we dusted off our crystal ball to see what lies ahead. Well, actually it's a snow globe the store was out of crystal balls by the time we got there but it doesn't matter because we then asked our staff to weigh in on what they expect to happen over the next 12 months in the areas they report on. They came up with an extensive list that explores the upcoming trends in everything from food to travel, movies to stage shows and office use to our social lives and, yes, we are confident that we will have social lives again. Rather than having to wait a few months to see what 2021 has in store, take an early look at the year ahead.

Tom Cruise didn't release a major movie this past year, but he did turn in a significant performance. Last month, he tore into crew members on the set of the latest "Mission: Impossible" movie for not following social-distancing rules. Some interpreted his tirade as an ego trip, but the superstar also delivered a critical message: Movies can move forward, if everyone proceeds with caution.

The same could be said of other forms of entertainment.

Twin Cities stand-up Robert Baril believes comedy clubs will soon reopen their doors, but with limited capacity for much of 2021.

"Unfortunately, the best venues for comedy are also the best for the virus small spaces packed with people so it will likely still be a while before it will get back to where it once was," said Baril, who just released an album titled "2020," a look back at the unprecedented year with fellow comedian Bryan Miller. "But anything with a live audience is better than Zoom."

Smaller theater venues will also continue to suffer, but bigger rooms such as the 576-seat main stage at Chanhassen Dinner Theatres may be back in business by summer. If that happens, the repercussion of George Floyd's death and the subsequent protests will be on artistic director Michael Brindisi's mind.

"I am personally focused on creating a more diverse company," he said. "I wish to be deliberate about the way we come back as it relates to a personal quest for social justice and equity."

NEAL JUSTIN

Want to know what the future holds for American pets? Take a look at what the future holds for Americans and then add a few treats for such a good boy!

Pet owners (many of whom refer to themselves as pet parents) are going whole hog into natural pet care products, toys and food. In addition to high-quality meat-and-vegetable mixes, some pet parents are even springing for made-to-order meals customized for breed and size, said Phillip Cooper, president of the California-based consulting firm Pet Industry Expert.

Like their work-at-home parents, pets have been going virtual, with "at-home" pre-adoption visits and training being shifted to online platforms and likely to stay there. And end-of-life preparation isn't just for people anymore. Now that pets are living longer and considered part of the family, more veterinarians are being asked to handle everything from counseling to cremation and funeral services.

One worrying trend that hasn't materialized is an increase in pet surrenders. Shelters were braced for returns when the pandemic first began. But it seems that people are hanging onto their pets. "People are still at home and they're still needing the bonding," said Azure Davis, founder of Ruff Start Rescue in Princeton, Minn.

Exotic animals are growing in popularity, most likely because they require relatively little care. Dogs, however, remain the darlings of the pet world, with the demand for puppies staying as high as it was when the pandemic first hit.

And you think humans like their CBD? Pet parents are using oils, lotions, laced treats and paw tinctures to treat joint pain. Many veterinarians, said Cooper, remain on the fence about cannabis for canines or felines.

Connie Nelson

Some people will surely dive right back into their pre-pandemic lives ASAP: packing bars and clubs, crowding indoor music shows, theaters, sports and wedding venues.

But many of us will re-enter the social waters with more caution, gradually incorporating riskier activities over the course of many months, or years. Or doing away with them entirely (see ya, handshakes).

A recent New York Times survey of 700 epidemiologists suggested that our former routines would not return to normal until most Americans are vaccinated, with half of the respondents saying they would not change their behavior until the country's vaccination rate hit 70%.

The general public is similarly wary, not expecting a sense of normalcy to resume until fall 2021 or later, according to a recent consumer trends survey conducted by Gartner. The findings of the research firm suggest that our formerly outward-focused culture flush with in-person, public experiences shared with large groups will shift to smaller, private activities.

And masks will likely remain a fixture for quite some time. (It's still unclear if those who have been vaccinated can spread the virus or how long immunity from a vaccine lasts.) At least the masks will help conceal whatever social awkwardness we've developed after being isolated so long.

Rachel Hutton

Even when the pandemic is tamed by a vaccine, working at home will continue. In a survey by the Pew Research Center, a third of respondents said they want the option to work from home at least part time. Similarly, in a University of Chicago study, 70% of respondents expressed a reluctance to return to some pre-pandemic activities that they now consider dangerous, including riding buses and sharing crowded elevators.

During the pandemic, employees who were working remotely discovered they had more flexibility, which they are unlikely to want to give up. That means the traditional 9-to-5, Monday-through-Friday workday will become less prevalent as employees continue to flex their schedules.

The pandemic also is expected to accentuate a movement that started a couple of years ago to incorporate more casual dcor (one might even say residential) in offices. Meetings that used to be held around a table likely will move to sofas and lounge chairs. Recreational areas including such amenities as pingpong tables and fitness centers will become even more commonplace.

After an exhausting and overwhelming year of juggling work, child care and distance learning, many families are hoping for a safe return to pre-pandemic routines as soon as possible. A recent Pew Research Center survey found that 65% of all parents of school-age kids were very worried about them falling behind, and that 72% of low-income parents were concerned.

Still, some of the positive habits formed in this upended time will stick like regularly spending time together at home for family movie nights, playing board games or working on puzzles. And media analysts have found that viewing trends are shifting away from kids watching short videos on their own devices toward entire families watching movies together on a big screen.

Mindfulness practices for kids and at-home art and science projects will also endure. Pinterest, which makes predictions each year based on what their more than 400 million users are pinning to the social media network, says that "outdoor education," "cardboard toys" and "moral lessons" will be big in the months to come.

A hybrid home-and-gym workout schedule is likely after the pandemic ends. Streamed workouts have become very popular, in part because of the versatility they offer. But that doesn't mean that gyms will be empty. While sales of home exercise equipment have risen, the gyms still have a much wider variety of gear and offer more workout options.

In addition to just working up a sweat, there will be an increased focus on mental and emotional health. The stress of the pandemic raised awareness of overall well-being, including healthy diet and lifestyle. Hard-core exercise programs will continue to attract a segment of the market, but the biggest growth is likely to be seen in yoga, meditation and stretching.

Wearable fitness has made huge gains, going well beyond watches to include everything from shoes and legwear to jackets and caps. As the range of products grows, so does interest in them.

One surprising outcome of the pandemic one that industry experts applaud is a jump in the number of people who work out during the day. Numerous studies have shown that getting physical activity during the day (rather than morning or evening) makes people more productive and creative.

As someone who has been going through the program for about two weeks now, I can say that GolfForever feels like Im getting a virtual personal training session in my tiny New York City apartment every day.

Ive done plenty of online and app-based fitness programs, especially during 2020 when my gym shut down due to the pandemic, so I was a little wary of trying another program. However, from the moment I completed the initial fitness assessment, Ive been pleasantly surprised.

Thats because GolfForever works a little differently. As mentioned, when you sign up the app takes you through a relatively painless fitness assessment, asking you to do some pushups, planks, balance tests paying close attention to your form, while also asking about your goals for the year the same thing the best personal trainers and physical therapists would do during your first session.

Based on your performance during this assessment, GolfForever then matches you with one of more than a hundred programs that is both suitable for your fitness level, the equipment you have available and your specified goals. GolfForever then provides you daily workouts to help you play your best golf.

For example, I learned from my assessment that I have a pretty strong core, but my balance is a bit suspect. That tracks with my tendency to sway instead of shifting my weight properly in my golf swing. It also tracks with my goal of improving my mobility, since balance and mobility go hand in hand.

Based on the first two weeks of workouts Ive done, its obvious the GolfForever program has heeded my assessment and wants me working on my balance. Every days workout is broken down into Fundamentals and Rotational Power. One of the most recent Fundamentals routines prescribed for me had a huge focus on balance, especially during the first exercise. So if you struggle with your balance like I do, watch the video below with GolfForever creators Dr. Jeremy James and Open champion Justin Leonard and give this exercise a try.

Neutral Spine March: Lying face up on with a foam roller running the length of your spine, brace your core and slowly lift your legs one at a time to march, keeping your back still. If you need assistance with balance, place your hands on the ground to either side of you. This exercise will also help you learn to move your hips independently of your core which will help you generate more power in your golf swing. Do 15-20 reps, alternating legs as you march.

Theres plenty more balance exercises (and strength, mobility and injury prevention exercises) where that came from, so check out GolfForever and make 2021 your best year on the course yet.
