Intense Exercise Can Delay Pregnancy

Moderate physical activity - such as brisk walking, leisurely cycling, golfing and gardening - did not adversely the time it took to conceive indicating that moderate - but not intense - activity is fertility- friendly. the study concluded that:

"There was evidence for a dose-response relationship between increasing vigorous PA (physical activity) and delayed TTP (time to pregnancy) in all subgroups of women with the exception of overweight and obese women."

"Moderate PA was associated with a small increase in fecundability regardless of BMI. These ndings indicate that PA of any type might improve fertility among overweight and obese women, a subgroup at higher risk of infertility."

"Lean women who substitute vigorous PA with moderate PA may also improve their fertility."

This study was performed on women who were trying to conceive who were presumed fertile, ASRM President-Elect, Linda Giudice, MD, PhD, noted that:

"This study is particularly interesting because its participants were recruited from the general population, not from infertility patients. It points out the benefits of moderate exercise to all women who are planning a pregnancy and suggests that women might reduce their time to pregnancy by modulating their exercise programs."

It certainly *is* possible to conceive and carry a baby to term while running but it may be a minority of women who can do so given the unfavorable hormonal environment that is created by intense, frequent exercise.

While your physician may not have mentioned exercise as a factor in your infertility, if you are a runner or a spinner it may be wise to try switching some of your intense cardiovascular exercise for walking, yoga or another less aerobic activity that you enjoy. If you are taking clomiphene to induce ovulation make sure that your hormone levels are being carefully monitored and supported if your body is not yet producing adequate hormones after an extended period of running. Intense and frequent exercise is very healthy at most times of your adult life but you may need to hit the brakes a little while restoring a more fertility-friendly hormonal balance.

Cool Hands May be the Key to Increasing Exercise Capacity

Study Highlights:

SAN DIEGO, March 13, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Cooling the palms of the hands while working out could help you stick with a physical activity program, according to a small study presented at the American Heart Association's Epidemiology and Prevention/Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism 2012 Scientific Sessions.

In the study, obese women who exercised while using the AvaCore Rapid Thermal Exchange (RTX palm cooling device) improved their exercise tolerance and cardiovascular fitness.

"Obese women often complain about sweating and getting tired because they're walking around with extra insulation," said Stacy T. Sims, Ph.D., the study's lead researcher and exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist at Stanford University in California. "If you can slow the rate internal temperature rises and cool someone who is obese, they don't store as much heat and don't feel as uncomfortable. They can do more work."

The cooling devices cooled the palms of the hand and circulating blood, thus pulling heat off the body.

Sims suggested that holding a bottle of cold water may also cool palms and help exercisers feel cooler, less sweaty and less fatigued -- allowing them to work out longer and make them more likely to stick with their exercise regimen.

For 12 weeks, researchers studied 24 women, 30-45 years old, who had a body mass index between 30 and 34.9, which is considered obese. Half worked out with their hands in a cylinder containing water at 60.8 degrees Fahrenheit. The other half used the same device with water at 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Participants didn't know the difference in their devices and did the same fitness activities, starting with push-ups, lunges and then progressing to using the treadmill, which contained the device. The goal was to increase exercise duration up to 45-minute stretches at 80 percent of their maximum heart rates.

"The control group dropped out quite early," Sims said. "The women who had the cooling device continued to participate and didn't have an issue with attrition because they finally didn't feel uncomfortable exercising."

During the three-month study, the control group's data remained almost the same while the cooling group:

A new study, however, puts emphasis on those who have exercised in younger years to keep on doing it, because the benefits of physical activity accumulate over a lifetime.

Maintaining physical performance and muscle strength with age is important given that lower levels in older populations are associated with increased risk of subsequent health problems, loss of independence and shorter survival times As the global population ages, there is a growing need to identify modifiable factors across life that influence physical performance and strength in later life.

What "Fits" into your lifestyle?

E njoying life is all about finding all the things that "fit." I'm not talking about a pair of jeans or a new bikini. Yet, maybe I am. Recently I have been involved with many discussions regarding exercise programs; mostly pertaining to "do you think I should try that program?" "I don't think I'm going to like that one, but is it really better?" Then in a different yet similar discussion; just yesterday, I found myself discussing the Paleo diet with a physician. Is it "all or none?" "All these programs sound amazing, which one works the best and what ones do I need to do?" It's about finding the right fit for you.

During a recent talk that I gave to a local community group, I realized the vast difference between the

The continuously changing "Diets" always tend to be the hot topic and are discussed on a daily basis; gluten-free and Paleo diets are on the top of the list today. I had the morning news on a few weeks ago and was listening to the interview during the cooking session. The interviewer made a point to say to the chef, "but, I know that you are not a practicing 'vegan' why are you on our show today, showing us these fabulous 'vegan' recipes?" Needless to say, I perked up and turned an ear to listen to his response. Because, usually you'd go to the professionals that practice what they preach, wouldn't you?

His response was that just because this is a vegan meal, doesn't mean that those of us who aren't per-se "vegans" still can't enjoy the dish. He added that he is a "vegan" sometimes and tries to be a "vegetarian" most of the time and really enjoys throwing in a "Paleo" meal every now and again. I really thought that was a great answer.

I could never be a true "vegetarian", however I love vegetarian meals and I can choose to eat one, two or three of them a day, week or month. I love the philosophies behind the Paleo diet; its simplicity and historical thought processes are right on. There too, I will chose to eat some Paleo meals whether it's daily, weekly or a few times a month. Have you ever tried Gluten-free? That too, is delicious and has no reason to not be in our diet when we choose. Will I choose to become exclusive in any of these kinds of diets? Probably not, because I know me and I know what works for my active family. Would I choose to ever become exclusive in any of them, only if I needed to. There are medical reasons that require individuals to avoid gluten, dairy and sugar and those are extremely important to factor into your personal "fit."

So when I council individuals on their exercise and dieting I encourage them to only practice what is going to fit into their lifestyle at the present time. Choose what you know will work, what you'll like, mix it up and remember that what works today might not be the perfect "fit" next year. When you find that "fit" exercise and dieting become easy!

Exercise may not help older people fall less, study finds

Joining a regular exercise program may help older people move better, but it doesn't necessarily mean they are more steady on their feet or will lose their fear of falling, according to a German study.

"We can't take it for granted that if we improve on the physical performance that it will translate over to the psychological dimension," said Ellen Freiberger, lead author of the study and a sports medicine and gerontology researcher at Friedrich-Alexander-Universitat Erlangen-Nurnberg in Germany.

For the study, which appeared in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, Freiberger and her colleagues set out to compare different types of exercise and what impact, if any, they had on physical performance, falls and the fear of falling among older people.

The researchers recruited 280 people over age 70 who were still living independently in Erlangen, Germany. Between 2003 and 2006, the participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups and followed for the two years.

Of the four groups, one did not exercise at all. The other three used strength and balance exercises, but two also included either endurance exercises, which researchers used to gauge the participants' fitness, or an education program to measure their fear of falling.

The final group's regimen included elements of an educational program designed to reduce the fear of falling, and the people did mental exercises to target traits such as concentration and short-term memory.

Everyone in the study's exercise groups attended two one-hour sessions per week for 16 weeks. Each session had fewer than 15 people in it.

At the end, there was no difference between the four groups in the scores that tracked falls or the fear of falls, and only a slight improvement in the time it took to walk six meters.

For the no-exercise group, it took 51 seconds to walk six meters at a fast pace two years after the start of the study. It took the group that only did strength and balance exercises 48 seconds, which was the same amount of time for the group with the endurance exercises.

The fourth group, with the education component, came in the worst with 56 seconds.

Prince George's native teaches exercise, healthy eating to all ages

You could hear the curious sound of a blender coming from the indoor basketball court at the Beltsville Community Center on Monday morning.

The exercise program Yobics4Kids had just ended and Troy Richardson, creator and founder of the parent company Yobics Inc., a health and wellness company that creates exercise programs for all ages, was showing the participants how to start their day with a healthy fruit smoothie.

Founded in April 2008, Yobics Inc., offers 14 different individualized programs for all different age and ability levels. Everything from Yobics4Kids; AquaYobics; Yobics for Schools, a before-school program; Yobics for Teachers, an after-school program for educators; and Yobics programs for people who use a wheelchair.

Combining two schools of exercise, Hatha Yoga and Aerobics, Yobics offers cardio and intensity combined with crucial stretching.

Richardson, a native of Prince Georges County, always played sports when he was younger with his family. This prepared him for a career in the U.S. Marine Corps, which he joined at age 16.

Since Richardson said he was already in shape for the Marines before he even got to boot camp and maintained a perfect physical fitness test score throughout his time in the Marines, he was asked to train the units.

However, as soon as Richardson began training, he realized something he found to be very important was missing and set out to incorporate it into the training regime.
