HOUSE CALL: Exercise is important for children

Dr. Christian Robinson Sherrod

SAN ANGELO, Texas Exercise is important for each member of the family. The benefits of maintaining a healthy lifestyle for you and your children are endless. With springtime and warmer weather approaching, exercise opportunities are readily available.

Exercise can improve children's sleep and self-esteem, help them feel less stressed and keep a healthy weight, and build and keep healthy bones, muscles and joints, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Agriculture recommend one hour of exercise per day for children. Exercise also reduces the risk of heart disease, certain types of cancer, osteoporosis and diabetes. It lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, helps reduce obesity and decreases symptoms of arthritis, anxiety and depression.

All these benefits make exercise a win-win, but there is a battle between physical activity and media consumption. According to a study from the Kaiser Family Foundation, children spend about 5 hours per day on all screen media. This includes television, computer, videos and DVD and video games. One of the best ways to improve exercise is to limit media time to less than two hours a day for children older than 2 and none for children younger than 2.

Recommendations for age and activity include:

Toddler: 90 minutes per day of activity with 30 minutes planned, 1 hours free play.

Preschool: two hours per day of activity with one hour planned, one hour free play

School age: one hour a day of activity, broken up into 15 minute intervals.

You can help motivate your child to be active by offering the right activities for your child's age, offering plenty of opportunities and equipment to be active, and keeping the focus on fun. Preschool children should focus on simple tasks like hopping on one foot, playing tag, kicking or throwing a ball, freeze dancing or running an obstacle course. School age children should start engaging in organized sports like baseball, basketball and football. For those who do not enjoy team sports, activities such as cycling, martial arts, swimming, dance, hiking, playing outside and yoga can offer the same benefits.

Teenagers who do not play school sports may find it difficult to fit physical activity into their schedule. Parents can help by setting an example, scheduling time for activity and offering the right equipment and clothing for activities such as biking, walking, running and hiking.

Better diet, exercise can cut cancer by one quarter

Want to prevent cancer? ... eat better and exercise more, study says.

A QUARTER of cancers could be prevented by 2025 through diet and exercise, saving hundreds of millions of dollars in the cost of treatment, a report in the Medical Journal of Australia has found.

Taking data on projected illness, and coupling it with published findings on the association between food, nutrition and physical activity in the prevention of cancer, the journal study found the incidence of cancer in Australia would rise to 170,000 in the next 13 years, an increase of 60 per cent since 2007. Intervention to improve health and environmental factors could reduce that by 43,000 or 25 per cent, it said in a report to be published today.

Contributing factors in the nation's poor health include an increasingly sedentary lifestyle, the prevalence of overweight and obese adults, climbing rates of harmful alcohol consumption, and an unbalanced diet.

Advertisement: Story continues below

Pip Youl, one of the authors and the head of research at Cancer Council Queensland, said that fewer than 10 per cent of Australians ate the recommended five serves of vegetables a day and only 6 per cent ate two or more serves of fruit a day.

''Ways to encourage better eating are things like improving the number of whole-grain cereals and bread, choosing foods that are low in salt, choosing a low-fat diet, particularly diets that are low in saturated fats.

''One of the key things is teaching children to eat healthily. So getting them interested in cooking and eating healthy foods, and that will give them a really good start in life.''

Poor health had become an economic and geographic issue. The study suggested that ''inequities in cancer outcomes varied with remoteness or area disadvantage'' and that ''increasingly the poor are becoming obese faster than the rich''.

With healthy food costing more than high-sugar, fat-soaked, nutritionally poor alternatives, Australians on lower incomes are more likely to make unhealthy food choices. Programs needed to be designed to accommodate different needs in different regions, Ms Youl said.

Overweight, Obese Adults Use Electronic Device to Stick to Diet, Exercise

Study Highlights:

SAN DIEGO, March 15, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Overweight and obese adults who used an electronic diary program on a personal digital assistant did better at staying on diet and physical activity programs, researchers reported at the American Heart Association's Epidemiology and Prevention/Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism 2012 Scientific Sessions.

People using the device, which provided tailored dietary and exercise feedback messages, were more successful in adhering to five treatment factors for weight loss:

The SMART (Self-Monitoring and Recording with Technology) study included 210 overweight or obese adults, 84 percent women, 79 percent white, who used a paper diary, a handheld electronic device without feedback, or a handheld device that provided daily messages.

Those using the electronic devices did significantly better than those using a paper diary for attendance, self-monitoring and energy and exercise goals.

At six months, the group that received the daily feedback messages from their device had more than a 5 percent weight loss, but over time adherence declined and weight gain occurred.

At 24 months, weight loss was similar across the three groups, but was slightly better in the group receiving feedback.

"The results suggest that using an electronic diary improves treatment adherence," said Lora E. Burke, Ph.D., study author and professor of nursing and epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. "Over time, participants' adherence declined, particularly in the later phase as contact frequency declined and subsequently ended. Adherence in the paper diary group declined more than in the device groups."

Study participants recorded their exercise levels and daily food and beverage intakes. Devices displayed the consumed daily calories and fat grams next to targeted amounts. Users with devices providing feedback received messages on diet once a day and exercise every other day.

Thirty-nine group sessions were offered in the first 18 months, followed by one "maintenance" session in the last six months.
