Study Reveals How to Keep Weight Off After You Quit Ozempic – ScienceAlert

Drugs that induce rapid weight loss, like Ozempic and Wegovy, are some of the most talked about medications on the market today. Yet despite recently exploding in popularity, some researchers are skeptical of their long-term benefits.

Studies suggest that once a person stops the weekly appetite-suppressing injections they typically regain about two-thirds of lost weight within a year.

That doesn't have to be the reality. A randomized controlled trial, led by experts at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, has found a solution.

When patients combine liraglutide injections with a supervised exercise program they maintain their weight loss much better a year after the drugs and supervised exercise are stopped, researchers say.

Liraglutide is different to the drug behind Ozempic and Wegovy, which is called semaglutide. Both medications, however, belong to a branch of pharmaceuticals known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. These drugs work by mimicking a natural hormone in the body that controls blood sugar, and they were initially designed to treat diabetes.

Today, researchers are still figuring out how to best use the appetite-suppressing nature of these drugs for controlled weight loss.

"Even though medical treatment for obesity is effective, people who stop taking the drugs have difficulties maintaining the beneficial effects," explains biomedical scientist Simon Birk Kjr Jensen from the University of Copenhagen.

"However, our study shows that people who exercise during treatment do not have the same propensity to put on weight post treatment."

The clinical trial in Denmark is the first to directly compare body weight changes after physical exercise, as opposed to pharmaceutical interventions, or both treatments combined.

The trial involved 109 adults with obesity, who were randomly split into four groups. One group undertook a year-long weight loss plan that included liraglutide injections only. Another group was assigned liraglutide and moderate-to-vigorous exercise that was supervised for two hours a week. A third group underwent only supervised exercise. And the last group underwent no specific weight loss plan.

A year after the end of the trial, researchers checked up on all of the participants to see how they were managing their weight on their own. Those who had taken liraglutide had regained about two-thirds of their initial weight loss. Those prescribed only exercise fared better in the long run.

The findings reveal that while liraglutide can result in weight losses comparable to exercise on its own, the drug is not as effective at maintaining weight loss as exercise on its own, the researchers conclude.

In fact, a year post-treatment, those who started and stopped liraglutide regained roughly 6 kilograms (13 pounds) more than patients who underwent a supervised exercise regime for a year.

The only participants to show better outcomes than those in the exercise-only group were those who underwent combined treatments. A substantial number of patients who combined liraglutide with supervised exercise were able to sustain a weight loss of at least 10 percent of their initial weight a year after stopping treatment.

On average, they weighed about 5 kilograms less than those in the liraglutide-only group a year post-treatment.

This difference was due not only to greater weight loss during active treatment, but also to reduced weight gain once treatment had ceased.

The sustained outcomes are probably due to participants picking up healthy exercise habits and maintaining those habits even without supervision, researchers say.

While GLP-1 receptor drugs can trigger an initial loss of weight, they don't change a participant's lifestyle, and they can come with a bunch of unfortunate side effects that could actually make exercise less appealing.

"From our data, it is clear that those who followed an exercise regime with or without treatment with obesity drugs felt less tired and more energetic. They also experienced better mental health. It simply led to improved quality of life," says biomedical researcher Signe Srensen Torekov.

"The same did not apply to those who only received medical treatment. In fact, they felt more tired and less energetic."

"The study almost makes me want to advise against medical treatment without increased physical exercise, especially if you do not want to be taking the drugs for the rest of your life," adds Srensen Torekov.

More research needs to be done on larger cohorts to really explore how weight-loss drugs like liraglutide can be used most effectively for long-term maintenance of body weight.

Despite all the hype surrounding these appetite suppressing drugs, exercise is a prescription that isn't likely to be replaced anytime soon.

Gaining weight in pregnancy can be difficult to accept, despite it being very normal. On average, most women gain around 10kg 12.5kg during their pregnancy, according to the NHS.

However, the weight gained during pregnancy is not because you are eating for two it actually comes from your baby growing and your body storing additional fat to help with milk production after birth, and it is completely normal and healthy.

Though it can be a shock seeing the scales jump up so fast, it is never advised to lose weight while pregnant. In fact, intentionally losing weight by dieting or exercising outside of your norm can be dangerous for both the mum and the baby.

Kate Hilton, a clinical dietician at FeelGut says: For most pregnancies, the focus should be on maintaining a healthy balanced diet to support the babys growth and development.

There are risks when trying to lose weight during pregnancy, the chances of delivering a baby with a low birth weight are increased. Restricting calorie intake can also lead to inadequate intake of essential nutrients required for foetal development, such as folic acid, iron, calcium, and protein, crucial for your babys development.

My advice would be to not make any drastic changes to your diet during pregnancy, instead; engage in regular moderate physical activity which can support overall health during pregnancy without the goal of weight loss.

It can be mentally, emotionally and physically challenging to accept your new body, but personal trainer and nutrition coach Sarah Campus of LDN mums fitness is a huge advocate for being strong and fit for birth, but NOT loosing weight unless told by your GP.

She said: Trying to lose weight whilst pregnant is not advised because you could be depriving your growing baby of nutrients that they need to grow and develop. It is advised to go for healthy weight gain with good nutrition and exercise while pregnant.

Being pregnant is not the time to be dieting, restricting calories, hitting personal bests. It is a time to nurture your body and that of your growing baby.

Sarah explained that though obesity or being overweight during pregnancy can lead to problems such as high blood pressure, preeclampsia and issues with blood clotting, you should not go to extremes during your pregnancy.

She advises: The best way to have a healthy pregnancy is to optimise your health prior to pregnancy. During pregnancy its advised to focus on healthier foods, including vegetables, proteins, whole carbs, as opposed to processed foods. It is ok to monitor your weight and make adjustments to your eating habits throughout your pregnancy, but good to be guided by a health care professional.

Continue to exercise to keep your entire body healthy and strong. Talk to your health care professional about safe exercise, especially after the 12th week of pregnancy.

Why Does Social Media Run on Comments About Weight? TikToker Shares How to "Block Out Any Noise" – EatingWell

Weight loss can be a sensitive subject for many, and for social media influencers, teetering on that fine line can be detrimental for their career. Even for people like Mark Gaetano, best known as @snarkymarky on TikTok to his millions of followers, who had the best intentions.

At the start of 2021 I decided to go on a weight-loss journey because I just wasn't really happy with how I was feeling, Gaetano tells EatingWell. That was my main motive, the way that I was feeling and my lack of physical ability. In fact, my epiphany was I was walking up a flight of stairs and I was just so out of breath that I thought, I can't be living like this anymore.

I started losing weight, and I am a young man who was already overweight, so that's obviously going to hasten the weight-loss progress, he explains. And I started sharing that I was on a weight-loss journey because it was starting to become physically evident that I was losing weight.

Through sharing his journey and expressing that his weight loss was the result of a low-calorie diet and exercise, his fans were mostly encouraging.

Initially, everyone was very, very supportive and they were super happy for me, Gaetano says. They were glad that I was broadcasting this and sharing this healthy transformation with my audience.

By December 2021, Gaetano had lost 125 pounds, so he decided to share this news with his followers.

That was where the comments started to skew negatively because I had posted a video saying that I was no longer overweight, he explains. That was a metric that I was using based off of BMI, which now I know has its very many flaws, but that was my metric that I was using at the time.

Gaetano is right in that body mass index, more commonly known as BMI, isnt the best indicator of your overall health. But instead of the comments being informative about the problems with depending on BMI, they were more accusatory towards the influencers intentions.

Most people were still very happy and celebratory, but there was still a corner of the internet that was not happy with me and was not happy with my tone and my rhetoric in celebrating my weight loss, he says.

Despite this, Gaetano continued his health and wellness progress throughout 2022. In 2023, the TikTok star admitted to gaining back some weight, which resulted in the negative comments shifting. This caused Gaetano to make a response get ready with me video to address these comments, and the video has since gained over 670,000 views.

As Im making more videos, people are of course in the comments, Oh, you gained weight, [and] Oh, I knew that weight loss wasnt going to be sustainable, I knew this was going to happen, I knew he was going to gain weight, which is so rude, he says in his video response. Why are you preying on someones body to change a certain way?

If you think someones words can be dangerous and may be promoting negative aspects of diet culture, consider messaging them directly or leave an informative comment suggesting a change of language instead of an accusatory one. More often than not, their intentions stem from an innocent lack of understanding. As Gaetano continues to give updates on his health journey, its important to remember to never critique other peoples bodies, even if they are choosing to share their health updates, habits and routines. When EatingWell asked Gaetano for advice on how to handle unwarranted comments about weight loss and weight gain, he chose four simple words: Block out any noise.

There are going to be people around you that will be happy to see you succeed, but theres also going to be people around you preying on your downfall, Gaetano further tells us. At the end of the day, its important to focus solely on how you feel, and not anyone else.

Tammys transformation is one of a kind, and its understandable why she gets so much support. Unlike Amy, who quickly dropped weight, Tammy had to work harder to see results.

Tammy is the underdog in her story. Shes an example of sheer dedication and hard work. Weight loss isnt just a way for her to feel better about herself, but its also an inspiration for countless people around the globe. Does Medicare cover weight-loss treatments? – East Idaho News

Does Medicare cover any weight-loss treatments for overweight retirees? I just turned 65 and need to lose about 100 pounds and would like to know if Medicare can help.

Dear Owen,

Yes, traditional Medicare does indeed cover some weight-loss treatments like counseling and certain types of surgery for overweight beneficiaries, but unfortunately it doesnt cover weight-loss programs or medications. Heres what you should know.

For beneficiaries to receive available Medicare-covered weight-loss treatments your body mass index (BMI), which is an estimate of your body fat based on your height and weight, must be 30 or higher.

A BMI of 30 or above is considered obese and increases your risk for many health conditions, such as some cancers, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and sleep apnea. To find out your BMI, the National Institutes of Health has a free calculator that you can access online here.

If you find that your BMI is 30 or higher, Medicare Part B will cover up to 12 months of weight-loss counseling conducted by a medical professional in a primary care setting (like a doctors office).

Most counseling sessions entail an initial obesity screening, a dietary assessment and behavioral therapy designed to help you lose weight by focusing on diet and exercise.

Medicare also covers certain types of bariatric and metabolic surgery for morbidly obese beneficiaries who have a BMI of 35 or above and have at least one underlying obesity-related health condition, such as diabetes or heart disease. You must also show that youve tried to lose weight in the past through dieting or exercise and have been unsuccessful.

These procedures make changes to your digestive system to help you lose weight and improve the health of your metabolism.

Some common bariatric surgical procedures covered include Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, which reduces the stomach to a small pouch that makes you feel full even following small meals. And laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, which inserts an inflatable band that creates a gastric pouch encircling the top of the stomach.

Unfortunately, original Medicare does not cover weight-loss programs such as fitness or gym memberships, meal delivery services or popular weight-loss programs such as Jenny Craig, Noom and WW (formerly Weight Watchers).

Medicare also does not cover any weight-loss drugs, but it does cover FDA-approved diabetes drugs that have unintentionally become very popular for weight loss.

Medicare Part D plans cover Ozempic and Mounjaro for diabetes only, not for weight loss! So, your doctor will need to prescribe these medications for diabetes in order to get them covered.

Medicare also does not cover Wegovy or Zepbound because theyre approved only for weight loss.

The reason behind the weight-loss drug omission is the Medicare Modernization Act, which specifically excluded them back when the law was written 20 years ago. They also excluded drugs used for cosmetic purposes, fertility, hair growth and erectile dysfunction.

Without insurance, weight-loss medications are expensive, often costing $1,000 to $1,300 a month. To help curb costs, try websites like GoodRX.com or SingleCare.com to find the best retail prices in your area. Or, if your income is limited, try patient assistance programs through Eli Lilly , which makes Mounjaro and Zepbound, or Novo Nordisk, the maker of Ozempic and Wegovy.

If you happen to be enrolled in a private Medicare Advantage plan, you may have coverage for gym memberships and some weight loss and healthy food delivery programs. These are considered expanded supplemental benefits and have gradually been added to some plans to provide coverage for nutrition, health and wellness. Contact your plan to see what it provides.

When WeightWatchers Ended In-Person Meetings, They Held Their Own – The New York Times

On a warm Saturday morning last September, 11 members of the Brooklyn Wellness Crew gathered at the Windsor Terrace Library for their regular meeting. There were two topics on the agenda: One, as always, was food. The other was even more fraught.

These women, all WeightWatchers devotees, were furious at the company, which had shut down its in-person meetings in Brooklyn in March 2023. One member said she felt like shed been fired from a job.

I felt deeply betrayed, said Naomi Nemtzow, a 74-year-old artist who has been a WeightWatchers member off and on since the early 1990s. In 2015, she lost 55 pounds; she credited in-person meetings workshops, in WeightWatchers parlance with helping her stay on track.

So did Dianne Stillman, 76, who was feeling a bit like a woman without a country. In her ideal universe, shed have been at her WeightWatchers workshop at the Fairfield Inn on Third Avenue, near Downtown Brooklyn. It was one of a handful of official workshops in the borough, where members stepped on a scale to weigh in and heard lectures from a trained facilitator.

But WW International, as the company is now known, had stopped holding that meeting, along with every other one in Brooklyn. In-person attendance had dropped significantly since the start of the pandemic, specifically among premium members, who were paying $44.95 a month for unlimited access to virtual meetings and other digital tools.

According to WW, before the pandemic there were 3,300 in-person workshops throughout the United States. That number had dwindled to 825 by March 2023. As of January 2024, WeightWatchers website lists 1,040 workshops nationwide, with at least 59 held online.
