Market for wearable fitness devices poised to 'explode'

If you're a fan of wearable sport and fitness sensor devices, you'll be glad to know the trend is hot and only getting hotter. According to research firm ABI, consumers can expect to see 90 million shipments of such gadgets in 2017.

According to ABI on Wednesday, the market will "explode" over the next few years, as companies such as Nike, Adidas, and Motorola as well as specialized vendors such as Polar and Garmin unveil new, updated devices.

While sports, fitness, and well-being trackers will be the most popular, the analysts say that home monitoring applications for assisted living and remote patient care to manage chronic conditions will also surge.

Over the next five years, the total market for wearable wireless devices in sports and healthcare will grow to nearly 170 million devices in 2017, up from 20 million in 2011, an expected growth of more than 40 percent.

Bluetooth 4.0 takes a lot of credit for the expected expansion, as the new technology is making inroads into a slew of fitness and health products, according to both ABI and The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG).

Announced earlier this month, Bluetooth SIG is forming a new Sports and Fitness Working Group, which aims to increase interoperability between wearable gadgets and sensors and so-called "hub" devices such as smartphones, televisions, and gym equipment.
