House fails to override veto that would have allowed bars, gyms to reopen – WXII12 Winston-Salem

In a 66-53 vote in the house Wednesday evening, lawmakers failed to override a veto of a bill that would have allowed bars and gyms to reopen. Representatives from several major fitness center franchises and their team members met in Raleigh today to push for the reopening of gyms and other exercise spaces currently closed by the state due to concerns surrounding COVID-19. "The appetite for fitness is there, we just need to give it to them," said Stephen Kindler Jr., president and CEO of National Fitness Partners and a Planet Fitness franchisee. "We're ready for it. Weve been prepared for six weeks. Our facilities are literally ready to open our doors Friday morning to welcome our members back and wed love for either the general assembly or Gov. Cooper to make that happen."Cooper said in a Wednesday afternoon news conference the that the COVID-19 metrics indicate the state is not ready to move forward and open closed business where it is difficult to social distance. He urged lawmakers not to override his veto.Planet Fitness, Crunch Fitness, O2 Fitness and Orangetheory Fitness have partnered together to create a plan for, what they call, a responsible plan for reopening. They've titled the plan "FORR: Fitness Operators for Responsible Reopening."The plan, which includes 14 steps for a "safe and healthy reopening of fitness centers" include instructions on a range of efforts from limiting capacity to cleaning and amenity offerings. The plan called for 40% of total capacity, or 10 people per 1,000 square feet, and cleaning of high-touch points. Cooper ordered gyms and other businesses to close March 25 due to concerns surrounding COVID-19. In the weeks since, the state has moved from phase 1 to phase 2 of the the governor's reopening process. Many expected gyms to be able to reopen in phase 2, but the governor did not include gyms, as well as bars, to do so when he moved the state into phase 2.Cooper blocked a legislative effort to undo his coronavirus pandemic-related closure orders, vetoing legislation that would have allowed gyms to reopen and bars to serve customers outdoors. FORR released a statement following Wednesday's vote.We are disappointed with the outcome of todays vote. Every day gyms are closed is another day our hard-working employees are out of work and health club members are deprived of their workout routines. We commend the bipartisan group of lawmakers who supported this effort to safely reopen gyms and save jobs on behalf of North Carolinas 2.5 million health club members and 45,000 gym employees. Forty-seven governors from both political parties have acknowledged the relationship between physical fitness and mental health by allowing gyms to safely reopen, so why wont Governor Cooper? We strongly urge the governor to amend his Executive Order to reopen gyms now using our science backed, 14-step plan featuring the highest public health precautions and stringent sanitation protocols.
