Doctor: Prevent back pain with regular exercise

LEOMINSTER -- HealthAlliance Hospital continues its commitment to improving the health of the community by offering a series of health and wellness lectures, events, services and support groups. These series are made possible through a sponsorship by Rollstone Bank & Trust.

The hospital's Community Health and Educational Series included a back-pain lecture presented by Dr. Robert Deters, physiatrist at UMass Memorial Orthopedics, at HealthAlliance on Jan. 19. Nearly 60 people attended the lecture.

"Maintaining your health requires making it a priority in your life and making good lifestyle choices," said Deters. "Your back is no different. The most important thing you can do to prevent back pain is to get into a regular exercise program. If you smoke, it is another reason to quit. Smoking is a big risk factor for severe disk degeneration and lower-back pain. Exercise and smoking cessation will not only help prevent severe lumbar degenerative disk disease, but also will help prevent heart disease, lung disease, vascular disease and complications from diabetes."
