Kalonji: Weight Loss, Benefits, and Side Effects – Healthline

Kalonji, also known as Nigella sativa, black seed, and black cumin, is a flowering plant native to Southern Europe, North Africa, and Southwest Asia.

Its seeds have long been used in herbal medicine to treat a variety of diseases and conditions ranging from diabetes to arthritis (1).

More recently, the herb has gained popularity for its purported weight loss benefits.

This article explores whether kalonji can help you lose weight and provides an overview of its health benefits, safety, and side effects.

Kalonji is an annual flowering plant that can grow 835 inches (2090 cm) tall (2).

Its fruits contain numerous black seeds that have been used traditionally in Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern countries to treat diseases and conditions like diabetes, pain, and digestive tract problems (1).

The Prophet of Islam, Muhammad, even believed the seeds to be a remedy for all diseases except death (2).

Today, its known that kalonji seeds and oil contain active compounds called phytochemicals, including phytosterols. These have demonstrated a wide range of therapeutic benefits, including weight loss (1).

The exact mechanisms through which kalonji promotes weight loss is unclear.

Its suggested that the active components in kalonji seeds boost weight loss by affecting the expression of specific genes related to appetite control and fat loss (3, 4, 5).

A review of 11 studies in 783 participants with obesity or overweight found that kalonji powder and oil reduced body weight by an average of 4.6 pounds (2.1 kg) and waist circumference by 1.4 inches (3.5 cm) over 612 weeks, compared with a placebo (6).

However, these effects were only significant when participants combined kalonji with diet and lifestyle modifications, suggesting that the herb supplements alone arent effective for weight loss.

Another review of 13 studies with 875 participants showed that kalonji powder and oil reduced body weight by 4 pounds (1.8 kg) but had no significant effect on waist circumference over 613 weeks, compared with placebo (7).

Thus, while kalonji is likely ineffective for weight loss on its own, it may aid weight loss when combined with a low calorie diet.

Indeed, one 8-week study found that women combining a low calorie diet with 3 grams of kalonji oil daily lost 4.6 pounds (2.1 kg) more and shaved an additional 1.2 inches (3.1 cm) from their waistline compared with women receiving a low calorie diet and placebo (8).

It should be noted that physical activity levels werent assessed in many of the studies, which potentially also influenced the results.

As such, additional high quality research like randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that includes controls for variables like physical activity and diet is necessary to confirm kalonjis potential weight loss benefits.

Studies suggest that kalonji can aid weight loss when combined with a low calorie diet, but more research is needed to confirm these findings.

In addition to its promising weight loss benefits, kalonji contains plant compounds that may benefit heart health.

A review of 5 RCTs found kalonji powder and oil supplements significantly decreased levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) an indicator of inflammation and heart disease risk in people with obesity based on body mass index (BMI) (9, 10).

The herb may also reduce heart disease risk through its beneficial effects on blood pressure and blood fat levels.

A review of 11 RCTs demonstrated that kalonji powder and oil significantly decreased blood pressure in people with both high and normal blood pressure after 8 weeks of treatment, compared with placebo (11).

Another review of 17 RCTs found that kalonji oil was effective at significantly reducing LDL (bad) cholesterol, while the powder increased HDL (good) cholesterol in healthy participants and in people with conditions like diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure (12).

This review also noted that the supplements significantly reduced triglycerides, a type of fat in the blood which in elevated levels increases heart disease risk (13).

Collectively, these findings suggest that kalonji may benefit heart health in a variety of ways.

Kalonji may reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering inflammation and blood pressure, and by improving blood levels of fats like cholesterol and triglycerides.

Kalonji may promote healthy blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is a condition where your body doesnt produce enough of or cant efficiently use a hormone called insulin, which is produced by your pancreas to lower blood sugar levels.

Unmanaged blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes can increase the risk of diseases of the heart, eyes, and kidneys (14).

Kalonji is thought to improve blood sugar management by increasing the action of insulin and delaying the absorption of sugar into the blood (15, 16).

A review of 17 RCTs in people with type 2 diabetes showed that kalonji powder and oil significantly reduced levels of fasting blood sugar, as well as hemoglobin A1c, a marker of 3-month average blood sugar levels (15).

Other reviews have similarly demonstrated significant improvements in blood sugar control in people with type 2 diabetes who took the powder and oil supplements (16, 17, 18).

Still, many of the studies included in these reviews failed to control for factors related to diet and exercise, which may have influenced the results.

Kalonji may help people with type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar levels by increasing the action of insulin and slowing the absorption of sugar into the blood.

Several studies have assessed the safety of kalonji.

One study in 114 people with type 2 diabetes found no adverse side effects on kidney or liver function in a group that consumed 2 grams of the powder daily for 1 year in addition to their regular medications (19).

Studies have also failed to find adverse side effects on kidney or liver function with the oil in doses of 35 mL per day for 8 weeks (8, 20).

However, mild side effects like stomachaches and nausea have been reported with both the powder and oil supplements (6, 7).

In either case, people taking medications for diabetes or a thyroid problem who wish to try kalonji should speak with their medical provider first, as it may interfere with the effectiveness of those medications (21).

An effective dose of kalonji for weight loss appears to be 13 grams per day of the powder or 35 mL of the oil (6, 7).

These doses have also been shown effective for heart health and managing blood sugar levels (12, 15).

There doesnt appear to be a difference between kalonji seed powder or oil in terms of weight loss effectiveness.

However, the powder appears to be more effective than the oil for increasing HDL (good) cholesterol, possibly related to the powders higher concentration of heart healthy fats (12).

Kalonji seed oil and powder are likely safe in doses that have been shown effective for weight loss, heart health, and blood sugar control.

Kalonji is a plant from which the seeds have been traditionally used for the treatment of diabetes, pain, and digestive tract problems, among other diseases and conditions.

It may be effective for weight loss when combined with a low calorie diet.

It may also promote heart health, as well as lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

While more research is needed to confirm these promising health benefits, kalonji appears to be safe for most people.

My weight loss struggles began in 2004. I was in college and experienced a sexual assault. I ended up leaving school, moving back home, and I coped with my trauma by eating anything and everything. I rarely would leave my room, and before I knew it, I went from 160 to 230 pounds. During this time, I was also in an abusive relationship, which did not help my struggles with weight or my mental health.

In 2007, I was diagnosed with PCOS, which caused even more darkness in my life, and I sank deeper into depression. In 2009, I finally decided I needed to do something to better my life. So I ended up losing 60 pounds with diet and exercise, and I finally gained the courage to leave my husband. However, I hadn't dealt with my traumas properly, so I was still using food as a coping mechanism.

After she was born, I started walking up and down my driveway. At first, I was only strong enough to walk one lap. The driveway was half of a mile long, and I could barely breathe after that lap. Beachbody videos were great because they offered modifiers, and you could see how to do the workouts properly without hurting yourself. Right now, I work out one to two hours a day. During the week, I walk three to four miles in the morning, then I lift weights for about an hour afterwards. When I lift weights, I focus on a muscle group a day, and it really has changed the composition of my body.

Before I lost weight, I was always looking for happiness in all the wrong places, thinking that food would fill the void that I had inside of me. I had the worst self-esteem. Then, every two months, you want to stand naked in front of a full-length mirror and check for new spots or changes in old ones. Look at your front and back, and at your sides, forearms, underarms and back and front of hands. Then examine your neck and scalp (you might need help with this). Check your back and backside and legs, toes and soles of feet.

From Mediterranean diet to intermittent fasting, five healthy ways to lose weight – Firstpost

Ask anybody whos tried to lose weight through a new diet and maintain it for the long haul, and youll know that its no easy feat. You can pick a diet that youve heard is extremely effective, stick to it religiously for a few months, but maintaining most of these diets for years and years is next to impossible.

A study published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research in 2018 explains that while a lot of these diets gain immense popularity among young people, theyre often extreme, especially when it comes to carbohydrate and fat intake.

So, they might lead to sudden and extreme weight loss, but also health issues due to an unbalanced diet and sudden weight gain because of non-sustainability in the long run.

Healthy diets: a match made in weight-loss heaven

What most people fail to realise when getting excited about a new diet is the sustainability factor, but its clearly the most important one.

A study published in the Medical Clinics of North America in 2018 points out that long-term weight management can be challenging given the interactions between our biology, behaviour and the increasingly obesogenic environment we live in.

The most effective solution to this issue is to pick a diet thats naturally sustainable, includes all possible micro- and macronutrients your body needs to maintain immune response, strengthens your resolve to follow through and prevents relapses to binge-eating habits. Believe it or not, there are a few diets that provide this perfect match of nutrition, disease prevention and weight management in the long run.

1. Plant-based diet

Its not necessary that you go completely vegan, just a vegetarian diet is effective enough for sustained weight loss, and many studies have proven this time and again. One study published in the Journal of Geriatric Cardiology in 2017 explained how a plant-based diet is very effective in lowering your body mass index and weight in the long run.

Another study in Nutrients in 2019 explains that a plant-based diet leads to sustainable weight loss because it is low on the calories, high on nutrient density and satiety, boosts insulin sensitivity and improves gut health.

This diet is also linked with lower risks of heart disease and cancer. The only disadvantage of this diet is that because it mostly excludes animal products, nutrients like iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids have to be supplemented. This can be easily overcome naturally if you choose a flexitarian plant-based diet which depends predominantly on plant products, but also includes fish and eggs for the remaining nutrients.

2. Low-carb diet

Low carb diet can lower insulin levels in the body, help reverse insulin resistance in PCOS and pre-diabetes and it is beneficial for weight loss as well, says Akanksha Mishra, a clinical nutritionist and certified diabetes educator associated with MyUpchar. A study in Current Diabetes Reports in 2013 explains that carb consumption is the main reason behind post-meal glucose spikes, and can lead to weight gain and diabetes among other issues.

Inversely, reducing carb intake can lead to improved metabolism and insulin sensitivity. Another study published in BMJ in 2018 indicates that a low-carb low-fat diet can increase energy expenditure, and this metabolic effect can make sustained weight loss a possibility.

Its important to remember that low-carb does not mean no carb. Complete exclusion of any nutrient, even carbs, cannot be sustained for a long time because carbs are strongly associated with satiety.

For sustainability, you have to switch your simple carb to complex carb or protein-rich options, like switch wheat chapati with soya flour, pearl millet or black gram chapati. With this type of change, you will not miss your favourite foods and can follow this diet in the long run.

3. Mediterranean diet

You might have heard about the diet Italians and Greeks follow and how it leads to longevity, indicating a reduced risk of diseases. The Mediterranean diet is one of the best diets to follow for the lifetime because its beneficial for heart health, obesity, and chronic disease because of the large portions of food being healthy vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and grains, Mishra says. This diet completes all the nutritional requirements of the body and satisfies the taste buds as well, and that is why it is easy to stick in the long run.

But does it also contribute to weight loss? Studies suggest it does. One study published in the American Journal of Medicine in 2016 suggested that the Mediterranean diet results in similar weight loss and cardiovascular risk factor level reduction as low fat and low carb diets do. Another published in Nutrients in 2019 indicates that this diet pattern if introduced and adhered to during childhood years, can lead to lifelong prevention of unnecessary weight gain and obesity.

4. DASH diet

Eat plenty of fruits, veggies, whole grains and lean meats, and cut off salt, red meat, added sugar and fat: thats what the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet insists on. Just like the Mediterranean diet, DASH is not an exclusively weight-loss diet. As a healthy eating pattern, DASH diet helps lower blood pressure, prevents or reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, kidney disease and keeps your weight under control, Mishra explains.

A study in Liver International in 2018 found that consumption of a DASH diet for at least eight weeks can lead to weight loss and reduction in triglycerides, inflammation, etc. However, if you are prone to low blood pressure, reducing salt intake excessively can have a negative impact on you. Its best to consult a doctor before starting this diet.

5. Intermittent fasting

A study in the New England Journal of Medicine in early 2020 found that metabolic switching through intermittent fasting can help lose weight and prevent other diseases in the long run. And this is not the only study in recent years that underlines the benefits of intermittent fasting for weight loss, because switching between periods of fasting and eating ensures satiety, boosts metabolism and detoxifies the body too.

The only problem with this diet strategy is managing cravings during fasting periods and reining in the cravings to eat anything available or unhealthy during the eating periods.

Britons should lose weight to help fend off second wave of coronavirus, deputy CMO says – Yahoo Finance UK

Englands deputy chief medical officer has urged Brits to lose weight in order to help fend off a potential second wave of coronavirus.

Dr Jenny Harries said she is very, very concerned about a resurgence of COVID-19 and suggested people take action now to prepare for it.

She said there is good news around COVID-19, such as children not getting very sick, but there are also risk factors, such as people being overweight.

Obesity is actually problematic and thats one of the things that we could do something about, she told ITVs This Morning.

Dr Harries warned there is still quite a long haul to go with the virus and people must not become complacent and must keep up hand-washing, social distancing and limiting social interactions.

She added: The virus is still out there, its looking for more people to infect and we need to stop it getting a grip.

The deputy CMO said more research is needed regarding the point in an illness at which somebody can transmit the virus, adding that asymptomatic transmission is really difficult to detect.

Asked by presenter Phillip Schofield if the virus is weakening in strength, as some scientists believe, Dr Harries replied: There is a possibility that that is happening but I think we dont have enough clear evidence of that at the moment.

And I just say two things: it is possible that that will happen but we should not be complacent.

Dr Harries suggested the warm weather may have helped keep a lid on the pandemic but this could change in the autumn months.

She said: Because the weather is slightly with us, its quite likely that the summer is sort of running a bit in our favour, that in the warmer weather, particularly when people are outdoors much more which is much safer were unlikely to see one.

But I think myself and colleagues are very, very concerned about looking out for a potential second peak as we move into the autumn, and of course thats the same time that we start having people presenting with other symptoms which could confuse people so flu symptoms vary, obviously, and also when our hospitals get busier.

Dr Harries warned it is highly unlikely COVID-19 will just be eliminated and she believed a vaccine would not be found this year.

Dr Harries said she is very comfortable about children going back to school, adding that gaining education will set up their own life chances and their own health outcomes.

‘God wasn’t through with me yet,’ says pastor who lost 350 pounds – Times Tribune of Corbin

CANNONSBURG, Ky. (KT) - Dicky Tiller isn't half the man he used to be. Literally.

The Kentucky Baptist pastor of Liberty Baptist Church in northeastern Kentucky weighed in at 768 pounds five years ago.

Today he's at 388 pounds and losing weight every week. The personable 49-year-old pastor has a community of friends and family behind him who he says has cheered him on every step of the journey.

He also has a deep faith that he credits for making it happen.

"I knew God wasn't through with me yet and it was time to do my part," said Tiller, who has been a pastor for 12 years. "I've had encouragement of other ministries, my family and everybody I know. Dr. (Eric) Smith was fantastic and his staff was great."

Smith, a Georgetown doctor who went to Boyd County High School, did the medical weight loss surgery. Tiller has an affinity for Boyd County, where he has been involved in sports programs for years through broadcasting games and keeping the scorebook in baseball.

Tiller says he still has a long way to go but the 350 pounds of weight lost has given him a new lease on life.

"It was just the right thing to do," he said. "God tells us to take care of ourselves. It's embarrassing to let yourself get into situations like I did. God wants us to be healthy to go and serve Him."

Tiller stayed in the pulpit at Liberty but he had to be seated and visiting became an impossible chore too. Three years ago his wife, Judy, died after a bout with cancer. He was devastated by that loss.

"Before she went home to the Lord, she made me promise to do whatever I could to become healthier," Tiller said.

He had tried surgical weight loss before when he was at his heaviest. He lost 29 pounds to 739 and the surgery was scheduled. But they couldn't do it because his stomach was too thick, he said.

"It was really disappointing. I gained the weight back and got big again."

Eddie Barker, a former member at Liberty and the pastor at West Pineville Baptist Church, called him one day to tell him that he had gone through a weight-loss surgery and wanted him to meet his doctor, who graduated from Boyd County in 1992 and held the school field goal record.

"I told him I'd pray about it," Tiller said. "He said, 'You can pray all you want but you have an appointment on Tuesday.'"

Tiller went to the appointment, liked what he heard and began the journey again. He had to lose some weight before the surgery could be done. He also found support from many in the community, including a heart surgeon, Dr. David Bush, who told him it was a risk but it was more of a risk to not do it, Tiller said.

The procedure was supposed to take a little under two hours but his lasted much longer. "I was the first one at 7 a.m. and the second patient was still waiting at noon," he said.

The problem was the same as before with the stomach lining being too thick. When they came into the waiting area to tell family and friends, Barker begged them to try again because it may be his last chance at surgery.

Five weeks after the surgery he developed a rare hole in his stomach, Tiller said. "It wasn't even where they did the cutting. It was above all that."

Tiller was in ICU for 18 days and was kept alive by IVs for 2 months. "That was awful," he said. "I have a great church family and a lot of Christian friends, people who continue to support me. I have my coaching family at Boyd County, my church family, my sisters who got me through that."

Most of all though, he said it was God Almighty who pulled him through it all.

"I give God all the praise for this," he said. "It was my fault. Nobody did this to me."

Tiller said he weighed about 175 pounds as a senior who played in the band at Boyd County. He's not sure when his weight went spiraling out of control but said he "woke up one day and weighed 700 pounds."

Tiller wasn't able to exercise or do normal activities. Special accommodations had to be made for him to broadcast football and basketball games.

But life has changed for the good with the weight loss. He talks about the victory of walking a block away from his job at a radio station or strolling downtown to have lunch.

More surgeries await to cut off the skin that once held the nearly 400 pounds that he lost.

But he's standing in the pulpit and praising God for giving him another shot at being the pastor he was meant to be.

"The goal has always been to serve the Lord together," he said, talking about his late wife. "It's hard to serve without your wife. I don't think God intended for a minister to do that. It's so difficult without her. I try to keep on keeping on."

Weight loss: Why your gut health could be the key to your summer weight loss plan – Express

There could be a reason youre not losing weight that is nothing to do with how many workouts youre doing - or to be more specific, a billion reasons.

Your gut bacteria play an important part in helping you to lose weight, and not looking after them could affect your dress size.

So while youre trying to slim down your tummy with various meal plans and exercises, the tiny bacteria in your gut could actually be working against you.

Emily Rollason, nutritionist at Holland & Barrett explained: Your healthy bacteria help you digest food, provide essential nutrients, enzymes and hormones and importantly, manage your metabolism. But they can only do all this if your microbiome is in balance.

In fact, having a healthy microbiome could help you to cut back on the number of calories youre consuming, as some bacteria influence how you digest certain foods, producing chemicals that help you feel satiated.

But if its your stomach thats the issue, its important to know the difference between belly fat and bloating - which is another symptom of imbalances in your gut.

Gut health expert Jo Travers explained: Bloating is caused by a build-up of gas in the gut, produced as a by-product of bacterial digestion.

Its actually not necessarily a sign that something is wrong, but it can be uncomfortable and it can be a suggestion that your microbiome is slightly out of kilter.

So how do you look after your gut health, and in turn boost your chances of hitting your goal weight?

Jo explained that eating certain foods as part of your diet can help: Youve probably heard about prebiotics (dietary fibre that feeds the friendly bacteria in your gut). But as well as prebiotics, we can also take probiotics either as a ready-made preparation, or from fermented foods.

Fermentation produces lactic acid bacteria in foods like yogurt and kefir, which populates the gut when eaten and may have a positive effect on metabolism.

However, fermented foods are an acquired taste - so you may want to look at supplements instead, Emily advised.

If youre finding it difficult to stock up on your recommended fibre intake and cant stomach the thought of fermented foods in the morning, stock up on a good quality probiotic, the nutritionist recommended.
